Back 4 Blood trailer details new Card System and Game Director features

By Tom West,
A new trailer has been released showing the rogue-lite elements that the new Card System and Game Director features add in Back 4 Blood when the game releases on October 12th for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

Turtle Rock Studios is best known for its work of the Left 4 Dead titles, and more recently, Evolve. Although, Evolve can probably take a step out of the limelight here due to the game not quite living up to the potential that it promised. It does look like the team are building on the mistakes of the goliath hunting game and giving Back 4 Blood plenty of features to entice continued playthroughs. But more importantly, layering those features on top of everything that made Left 4 Dead the heavyweight champion of zombie shooters. At least, that’s what it sounds like on paper…

Back 4 Blood is a first-person co-op zombie shooter that puts players into the shoes of four apocalypse survivors called the Cleaners. These survivors fight for the survival of humanity against the creatures known as the Ridden, which were once human but are now hosts to an infectious parasite known as a Devil Worm. Players will be able to choose from and fully customise eight different characters with cosmetic items and weaponry. You’ll be able to take on the Ridden in co-op missions — either solo or with a team of up to four players — and in 4v4 PVP playing as Cleaners versus Ridden… Yes, the Left 4 Dead favourite multiplayer looks to be returning.

One of the biggest customisation options in Back 4 Blood and one that Turtle Rock Studios says will offer players plenty of replayability, is the new rogue-lite feature called the Card System. You’ll be able to dive straight into the action using a pre-made default deck or create your own from a vast collection of cards that can adapt to your personal play style. These cards offer buffs and bonuses such as health boosts, support abilities, and weapon upgrades.

The game can also play its own set of cards using an adaptive A.I. called the Game Director. This system responds to your setups with Corruption Cards. These modifiers can add obstacles, environmental changes, and throws special Ridden into the game to offer up a challenge, including a 20ft tall boss! You’ll need to think fast and adapt to the dynamic gameplay if you hope to survive the apocalypse.
