Yakuza games will be turn-based RPGs going forward, says Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, developer of the Yakuza and Judgment series, has revealed that future Yakuza games will be turn-based RPGs much like the recent Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

In an interview ahead of Lost Judgment's announcement, director of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Toshihiro Nagoshi and producer Kazuki Hosokawa confirmed that the Judgment franchise would focus on action gameplay and future Yakuza titles will be turn-based RPGs. The two producers told IGN, "The Yakuza series has been transformed into a turn-based RPG. On the other hand, over the years, Ryu ga Gotoku Studio has accumulated resources and know-how of making flashy and exhilarating action games that are effortless to enjoy. We decided that we should let our signature action gameplay live on through Lost Judgment."

All previous Yakuza games up to Yakuza: Like a Dragon have featured the over-the-top brawling combat the series is commonly associated with, but it seems Like a Dragon, with its turn-based combat, went down so well that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is sticking with the change. The Judgment series will be your only port of call if you're looking for gameplay similar to that of older Yakuza titles from the developer in the future.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio recently announced Lost Judgment, which launches for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One this September.
