Dolby Vision for gaming coming to Xbox Series X|S this week

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
Alpha ring Xbox Insiders with an Xbox Series X|S are going to receive an update enabling Dolby Vision this week, a function that will improve upon the standard 10-bit HDR. The news was announced via a Major Nelson tweet.

Dolby claims that Vision will improve the realism of the brightness, contrast, and colour values thus adding a realistic depth to game images that will outshine traditional HDR. According to Dolby, the resulting image could have up to 40x brighter highlights, 10x deeper blacks than HDR and still retain up to 12-bit colour depth on supported TVs. There is a really neat example on their website showing the difference between a traditional HDR image and the Dolby Vision version. The upgrade to HDR comes in addition to the Xbox Series X|S supporting Dolby Atmos in some games.

Dolby Vision is currently supported on a range of TV models made by LG, Sony, Philips and Panasonic. As first reported by Forbes, Dolby is "working closely with TV manufacturers to make Dolby Vision for gaming as seamless and automatic for as many TVs as possible.” A list of compatible games is available, however: Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Gears 5, Borderlands 3, and Wreckfest. As with most Alpha Insider initiatives, this will be a good indication of the image fidelity that will eventually be accessible to all Xbox gamers, even if it is currently a little rough around the edges and under-supported.

So, are you excited to see Gears 5 looking better than ever? Keen to see even brighter explosions in Borderlands and Wreckfest? We sure are. Let us know what you think of these developments down below.

Hey, I'm Kes! I'm a Staff Writer, and I've been here since 2021. What do I like? The Outer Wilds is top notch. The Witcher 3 blew my mind over the course of five years completing it. I want Burnout back — I really miss crunching mechanical wonders into walls to the sound of Guns N' Roses. Cool, now we are acquainted, I'll see you around.
