The second developer diary has been released for Ubisoft's upcoming, open-world driving title, Driver: San Francisco. After the Ubisoft team discussed the ways of getting back to the roots of the game, the developers talk us through a new game changing ability, the shift mode.

With "willpower being the currency" you need to build in order to use the shift mode, players will need to complete certain objectives whilst speeding through the streets of San Francisco. Reaching certain speeds, jumping a certain distance, and just all around smooth and skillful driving will reward the player with willpower, thus earning them the ability to use shift mode and take control of other cars and use them for strategic purposes.

Here's the video explaining all you need to know about shift mode:

Driver: San Francisco is scheduled for release on August 30th 2011 for the US, and September 2nd for Europe.
