TA Playlist game for November 2021 announced

By The TA Playlist Team,
We hope you’ve had a nice and chilled October, exploring the world of our current Playlist game, Costume Quest, and now it’s time to announce the winner of the TA Playlist poll for October.

This month we decided to go with a handful of games with amazing soundtracks and managed to narrow it down to four games. We’re excited to announce that the game with easily the best selection of metal music has won. Your chosen game for November is Brütal Legend. Remember, it’s not the best game in the world, it’s just a tribute.

Brutal Legend

Brütal Legend is an open-world strategy/RPG game developed by Double Fine and was released way back in 2009.

In Brütal Legend, you play Eddie Riggs, a seen-it-all best-of-the-best world-class Roadie, voiced and modelled after Jack Black, known for being a member of the band Tenacious D, and film star from movies such as School of Rock, Kung Fu Panda, Anchorman etc. Riggs finds himself drawn into an unknown world where the environments, inhabitants and technology are all based on Heavy Metal/Rock Music; and must find a way to liberate the oppressed native peoples from the evil Emperor Doviculus.

This game has an absolutely incredible soundtrack, with some of the best rock and metal around. There are 107 tracks in total by 75 different bands, with music from the likes of Tenacious D (including “The Metal”), Testament, Motörhead, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Dragonforce, Slayer and Dimmu Borgir. Dethklok (the fictional band from the TV show Metalocalypse) also make an appearance with Murmaider.

Looking at the achievement list, there are plenty of achievements related to the main storyline, including a set of stackable achievements for finishing the game on the hardest difficulty (Legend). Some of the more awkward achievements are related to getting collectables, with an achievement for each type of them, then an achievement for 100% completing the game (Metal God). You also get achievements for completing a certain number of multiplayer games, which can easily be boosted due to the servers benign relatively dead (Conquerer). Finally, there are a number of miscellaneous achievements relating to using your units (such as Euthanasia).

Brütal Legend has a community rating of 3.73/5.00 on TA, having been started by just under 107,500 people at the time of writing, with just over 2,300 of those gaining the completion (2%). The game should take you around 40-50 hours to complete. It is available through Xbox Game Pass and is backwards compatible. It also has an amazing walkthrough written by the Playlist’s very own ManicMetalhead (as you maybe be able to tell from his Gamertag, it’s one of his favourite games, the soundtrack definitely helps).

As always, join us over in the TA Playlist Hub to discuss the results, and be sure to leave a comment with your thoughts about the current month’s featured game… your quote could appear in an upcoming wrap-up article!

You will also find a thread in this forum for documenting any issues you have with the TA Playlist. Please put a post in here if you have any issues, and we’ll be able to forward them to the site developers for them to take a look.

The TA Playlist is a monthly community event. Everyone votes on which of four games to play, and then we all play through it in the following month. There's a dedicated hub to discuss everything about the game, from story beats to gameplay tips – and of course, you can track your achievement progress during the month as well. TA Playlist was created by Mark Delaney and is now run by Miles, Nici and Chewie.
