RAGE Special Collector's Editions Announced

Over the weekend, a new Collector’s Edition of Rage was announced. Such Collector's Editions seem almost mandatory for the gaming industry these days to help raise pre-order sales, generate extra income, and encourage gamers to buy the game new and not pick it up second-hand. They often include additional items which cover the spectrum from the sublime to the ridiculous, and where exactly the offerings from this Collector’s Edition fit, I’m not entirely sure.

The CE will be an enhanced version of the previously announced Anarchy Edition which already gives the gamer new downloadable items – a double barreled shotgun, crimson elite armour, Fists of Rage melee weapon, and a Rat Rod Buggy. What distinguishes this CE is the addition of a "Making-of" DVD, and two issues of Rage comics.

It is worth noting that these comics are the official Rage comic books published by Dark Horse, which cover the prequel story to the game, written by Arvid Nelson and Andrea Mutti. The comics aim to give an insight into the same virtual, apocalyptical world in which gamers are about to immerse themselves. Usually, I would wonder when a gamer would find time to sit down and read at all, but remembering the 22GB hard disk install that John Carmack recommends, I wonder no further.

I have to admit that I’m a little disappointed with these offerings and I would expect more from a Collector's Edition, especially given that the comics are available separately from Dark Horse Publishers at the normal price. Earlier in the year, a separate Collector's Edition was announced for the Australian market, which contained the same DVD, an A3 size poster, some badges, and, best of all, a Rage branded tri-wing boomerang, all of which seem a lot more collectable to me.

At the time of writing, these Collector's Editions have been announced for the UK and Australian markets only, but who knows what new announcements will be made for other regions before the official release date. Watch this space!

Rage is developed by id, published by Bethesda, and is scheduled for release in North America on October 4th, and in Europe on October 7th.
