Dying Light dev Techland hiring for unannounced AAA action-RPG

By Tom West,

Dying Light developer Techland has announced that it's currently hiring for an unannounced game, which is said to be a "AAA open-world action-RPG in a fantasy setting."

It looks like Techland is ramping up development on a brand-new open-world game, unrelated to its zombie-focused games, Dying Light and Dying Light 2: Stay Human. It's an action-RPG in a fantasy setting and currently has two ex-Witcher devs in both the narrative director and narrative lead roles.

Techland's announcement says that despite the recent release of Dying Light 2: Stay Human, and the "intense production" it required last year, the company continued developing this unannounced title. Now it's looking to expand the team working on it and help it "grow in numbers significantly."

Future support for Dying Light 2 is still expected to remain over the next five years, as was previously announced before the game's release. The statement reads: “We're very happy with what we have accomplished with the Dying Light franchise so far. Moreover, our journey with Dying Light 2: Stay Human has only just begun as we plan to support this game for at least five years, with its scope and size matching, if not exceeding, what we have provided our community with during post-launch support for its predecessor."

The currently unannounced title is a AAA open-world action-RPG, which is definitely a genre in which Techland has a fair amount of experience. What is different, though, is that this project is stepping away from the post-apocalyptic, undead-focused gameplay in favour of a fantasy setting. Again, after the melee-orientated combat of Dying Light 2, which puts players in a modern Dark Ages, the proof is in the pudding when it comes to the team's proficiency in developing handheld weaponry-focused gameplay.

"Our ambition is to introduce a brand-new IP that is vastly different from what we have been doing for the past several years. We want to create a fully next-gen experience. A new fantasy epic set in a sprawling open world, fueled by the skills and experience we have gained as a team over the years, infused with new ideas, passion, and creativity," Techland CEO Paweł Marchewka says. "While we cannot share more details about this project now, we're all truly invested in it and looking forward to showing it to gamers when the time is right."

We won't be expecting an announcement for quite some time, after the crazy-long wait that Dying Light 2 had between announcement and release, but it's definitely great to know that a brand-new experience is coming from the team. What do you think of this? Will you be looking forward to playing something that isn't focussed on shambling corpses? Let us know down below!
