Battlefield 2042 is DICE's only focus

By Tom West,

Battlefield 2042 is the only project that DICE is working on, as the developer plans to become a "first-person shooter powerhouse" in the next three years, so don't expect to see another Mirror's Edge any time soon.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, DICE general manager Rebecka Coutaz discussed the developer's ongoing mission to improve Battlefield 2042, its hopes for the future, and the reality of us seeing any other DICE projects like Mirror's Edge returning.

DICE only has eyes for Battlefield 2042

DICE has been fighting an uphill battle since the less-than-ideal launch of Battlefield 2042 back in November, which was followed by a restructuring of the studio and many of the leadership team leaving the company completely. That's when Respawn and Ripple Effect's Vince Zampella was placed in charge of the Battlefield series, and Rebecka Coutaz joined as general manager.

2022 marks the 30th anniversary of DICE and the 20th anniversary of the Battlefield series. "We have players who've been with us for 20 years and to disappoint them... it's really hard on us," says Coutaz. The studio has been on a constant path of improvement with Battlefield 2042, with almost every month introducing a new patch full of fixes for the game's myriad of issues, and slowly but surely, it's finding its footing. "The launch of Battlefield 2042 was not as expected," Coutaz explains. "Our players and community were disappointed, but so was our development team. We have focused on the health of the game, and so bug after bug, patch after patch, we are fixing and improving it."

We've just had the game's first season launch, and that's just the start, as the "connected Battlefield universe" previously announced by Vince Zampella is still going ahead along with Battlefield 2042's live-service model. Both the connected universe and live service plans are something Coutaz has plenty of experience with, due to more than a decade of running Ubisoft Annecy, which worked on games like Riders Republic, Steep, and The Division..

"I want the team to be really proud about Battlefield 2042," said Coutaz. "That is what they are chasing and they have their heart and the passion there. We want to be really, really proud of DICE. We want DICE to be the number one spot for first-person shooter games in Europe, and one of the powerhouses in the world. It's a fabulous team. We're going to make magic together."

During the discussion, GamesIndustry.biz also asked Coutaz if we can expect games like Mirror's Edge to now be on the backburner, to which Coutaz replied: "Totally. We are only focusing on Battlefield 2042. There is no time for anything else and this is what we want to do. In three years, we want to be the first-person shooter powerhouse that DICE deserves to be, and that is what we're going for."
