Footage emerges of cancelled Xbox 360 Scarface game

By Luke Albigés,

Scarface Empire was in development at Radical Entertainment as an Xbox 360 sequel to The World is Yours. The game was cancelled shortly after Activision acquired the studio, but we can finally see what we missed out on.

As well as a port of original Xbox title Scarface: The World is Yours, a full sequel — Scarface Empire — was also in production for Xbox 360. Neither game ultimately saw light of day, but newly discovered footage at least lets us see what Empire might have looked like thanks to pre-alpha gameplay and tech demos from 2008.

Cancelled Xbox 360 Scarface sequel

Posted by YouTube channel Mafia Game Videos, the early footage of Empire shows off its suitably glitzy Las Vegas setting, a little gameplay, and demos of some of its more interesting mechanics. According to the video description, Empire was using an engine that was "a heavily modified version of what was used on Prototype," and while the early footage is certainly quite rough, it's still a fascinating window into the past. Radical became an Activision studio following the 2008 Activision/Vivendi merger, with the publisher laying off around half of the studio's staff and cancelling several projects, including Scarface Empire. The rights to Scarface reportedly returned to license holder Universal soon after, meaning any subsequent game based on the 1983 movie would need to renegotiate a licensing deal.

What do you make of this belated look at the Scarface game that never was? Disappointed Radical never got to finish what it started? Upset that we got Hannah instead of Tony? Let us know!
