Overwatch 2 to replace original game at launch, Blizzard says

By Sean Carey,

When Overwatch 2 launches into early access later this year in October, it will fully replace the original Overwatch, game director Aaron Keller has confirmed.

In a Reddit AMA, Keller stated that once Overwatch 2 releases into early access on October 4th, it will "be a replacement for the current live service" in the original Overwatch. This basically means the current Overwatch as we know it will no longer be playable and will cease to be.

Overwatch 2 will replace Overwatch on October 4th

As previously stated, cosmetics and progress will carry over from Overwatch into Overwatch 2, in what Blizzard is calling a "shared multiplayer environment." It makes sense not to split the player base, but what does all of this mean for the Overwatch achievements? Will we see the entire list discontinued come October? At the moment, we are unsure. If we were to guess (and we hope this will be the case), it sounds like the current Overwatch client will simply be updated to Overwatch 2 and the previous achievements will remain unlockable. Of course, Blizzard may have other plans and might want to start fresh with Overwatch 2, so if you want to err on the side of caution, you may want to start working your way through any remaining Overwatch achievements you haven't yet unlocked.

In any case, we have reached out to Blizzard for clarification on what will happen with Overwatch's achievements when Overwatch 2 launches later this year. We'll update you as soon as we find out more.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you looking forward to Overwatch 2? Let us know down in the comments.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in as a news tip. Understandably, there were quite a lot of you!
