Skate bails on retail with new free-to-play model

By Heidi Nicholas,

The team behind the new Skate game have confirmed it will be free-to-play, featuring cross-play and cross-progression — microtransactions will feature, but the devs stress the game's "not pay-to-win."

"And so skate. will be full cross-play and cross-progression, across last-gen, next-gen, and PC," the devs confirm in the latest Board Room video. Check it out below:

The new Skate game will be free-to-play

The devs add that microtransactions will feature, saying, "We knew that to support a never-ending, ever-evolving, free-to-play world of skate. we'd have to look into different models for the game itself. Which means that there will be microtransactions. And we know that this is a sensitive subject." The team explains that they laid down some rules about microtransactions, saying, "skate. is not pay-to-win. There are no areas of gameplay or the map that you will have to pay to unlock. There won't be any loot boxes. And there are no gameplay-altering advantages that you can pay for as well." Apex Legends was apparently one inspiration about how to handle this in the game.

As for the reason behind calling it 'skate.' — "It's not Skate 4," the devs explain, "and here's the reason: this isn't a sequel. It's not a remake. It's not a reboot, a prequel; it's not any of that... this is it, it's skate. We're in this for the long haul. That means we're not an iterative title," they continue. "There won't be a Skate 5 through 10." They have plans to support the game for "years to come," with new content, events, seasonal drops, and more.

As for when the new Skate might be ready, it sounds as though we'll still have a bit of a wait — "when it's ready. We really mean that," the team replies, adding that player feedback is very important.
