Quantum Conundrum Announced

A first-person puzzle platformer with an emphasis on physics, all set in the intriguing game environment of a science lab.

Does the above description sound familiar to you? Of course it does. It sounds like Portal. Valve's critically-acclaimed puzzle game was created, in large part, by Kim Swift while she worked for Valve. Since then, Swift has left Valve and joined indie developer Airtight Games as a lead developer on a previously unannounced game. Today, that game was previewed exclusively on Gamespot and this weekend's PAX Prime will be hosting the official unveiling of the new game, Quantum Conundrum.

In the game, you play as a young boy who reluctantly arrives at his uncle's house to find it is essentially a mansion of various science experiments. His reluctance turns to intrigue just before something goes wrong and his eccentric uncle goes missing. From there, you must traverse the massive laboratory, room by room, in search of his uncle and armed with an IDS (Interdimensional Shift) device that allows you to pass to and from alternate dimensions. The two shown so far were the "fluffy" dimension and "slo-mo" dimension.

It sounds dizzying, and it should. Perhaps this gameplay video will help, along with Kim Swift's own narration.

Another similarity between this new title and Portal is their modest beginnings. Portal was developed by students who were later hired by Valve and then had their game included as a throw-in for https://www.trueachievements.com/The-Orange-Box-xbox-360.htm. Somewhat similarly, Quantum Conundrum is now being developed by an independent developer and, when released, won't be a retail game, but rather an XBLA title. The full game will provide about 4-6 hours of gameplay.

Similarities aside, the game looks very promising. Undoubtedly, we'll be hearing more about this title during PAX Prime over the next few days. We'll bring that information to you, in this dimension or another, as we receive it.
