TA Gaming Stats - August 22nd to August 28th 2011

By Dog of Thunder, 7 years ago
We are nearing the end of the summer drought of blockbuster retail titles. I hope your wallets are ready for the coming months, as from here on out, things are going to be much more interesting at TA's House of Stats. Before we get to that point, I would like to take a moment and remind you all that this world belongs to Deus Ex: Human Revolution and we all just happen to be living in it.

This report is for the period August 22nd to August 28th 2011.

Games Started
30,035 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 47,116 games between them (1,404 different games).

I for one, welcome our new cybernetic overlord.

Now, if I may be horribly crass for a moment, this week's most popular chart looks like Deus Ex: Human Revolution took previous number one games L.A. Noire and Duke Nukem Forever over a barrel in Zed's basement. This was nothing short of a blow out on par with the Spanish Armada's attempted invasion of England.

Get it? Blow out? No? Go ask a History major.

Speaking of history, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is again towards the top of the chart. Sure it is only with 346 new gamers, but still, that game is approaching one year since release and people are still picking it up.

Top Retail Games Started

The two games that shall not be named outside of Doritos' corporate HQ are off the chart. It only took perhaps the greatest two months of new XBLA releases to pull it off! Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition debuts at the number two spot with 1,212 gamers. Keep that number in mind for next week when Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection makes it debut on the chart. I would love to relive my childhood of debating which franchise is better just how much better the Street Fighter franchise is over Mortal Kombat.

You spell "combat" with a C people.

Now watch that THIS is the week everyone reads the commentary...

When you were first exposed to Minesweeper (WP), how long did it take before you realized that you could plant flags to mark mines?

This week's WP7 chart also gives us the definitive answer to a long standing question: Zombies or Ninjas? Plants vs. Zombies (WP) added 39 gamers to a cumulative total of 1,404. The greatest fruit slicing simulation on a mobile device, Fruit Ninja (WP), added 56 for a cumulative total of 2,507. Therefore, Ninjas > Zombies.

Also, how weird is Super Monkey Ball (WP)? No, not the concept as Monkeys+Balls is nearly as much fun as Monkeys+Barrels, but instead the achievements. Eight achievements for 200 points, with one of them horribly glitched? This game brings shame to a once illustrious franchise. I can not be the only one that spent years in college playing around with the Gamecube version of Super Monkey Balls.

Top Windows Phone 7 Games Started

Games Completed
6,566 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 9,243 games between them (990 different games).

Time to play the "which retail title recently received DLC" game! Call of Duty: Black Ops, check. L.A. Noire, well we're stretching "recent", but check. Bulletstorm, not recent but recently on sale, so we'll say half credit and give it a che.

Brink? Free DLC, which late adopters now have to pay 800 moonbucks to play. Captain America: Super Soldier breaks the trend and Jabootu help us if THAT game gets DLC. Not saying it is a bad title or anything, but not every game needs DLC+achievements.

@%#$@^#@^$# Harms Way #$^$&^%#*$. angry

This is the week that my completion of Bastion (Xbox 360) counted! Great game. Don't think I can say the same about Kinect Fun Labs: Air Band though, since that game you can play for free without a Kinect. Just grab some friends, your alcohol of choice, and a song with a killer guitar riff such as "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns'n'Roses or maybe "Muskrat Love" by Captain & Tennille. Kids these days, can't do anything right.

Top Arcade Games Completed

Does anyone use a WP7 for, you know, phone calls? Just wondering as it seems like this most recent round of completions is dominated by some time killing titles. Oh, my mistake, I meant to say "dominated by easy completions for people to pad their stats."

Top Windows Phone 7 Games Completed

Achievements Won
55,519 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 695,676 achievements online between them (38,594 different achievements).

Show of hands; who's surprised by this chart? Anyone? Bueller?

Top Retail Achievements Won

This one shows some variety, though Toy Soldiers: Cold War is still dominating. When I played Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition, I was happy to see Gil is just as annoying as ever. Seriously, he makes Seth look balanced.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

Yes Virginia, people do like free games.

Top Windows Phone 7 Achievements Won

Total TrueAchievements won by Genre

The bottom of this chart tends to heavily fluctuate from week to week. While the top genres tend to remain fairly stagnant, the overall TA gain has also been fluctuating wildly from week to week. It's clear that the Deus Ex effect has even warped this chart, as the Shooter genre nearly doubled the second place genre.

Any bets on how much TA will be unlocked in Sports thanks to Madden NFL 12?
