Dig deep and build high in SteamWorld Build, coming to Xbox in 2023

By Luke Albigés,

Thunderful has announced SteamWorld Build, a brand new multi-level city builder title set in its popular robotic wild west universe. The game will be coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One later this year.

SteamWorld Build will be hoping to throw its metal ten-gallon hat into the ring to become one of the best simulation games on Xbox later this year, with the new title riffing on SteamWorld Dig's mining adventures beneath the surface while letting you establish a thriving city around the mine above ground. You'll need the two to be operating in harmony to get the best out of either — the more support your underground workers have from above, the more materials and ancient tech they can send topside to help improve things for everyone and work towards finding a way off this doomed planet. Check out the reveal trailer to get a feel for this intriguing new SteamWorld game.

SteamWorld Build announced for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One

The two-tier gameplay of SteamWorld Build looks really interesting, with overworld management being a fairly familiar-looking city builder, while things get a bit more dangerous down in the mines where the block-based earth and resources and invading enemies give off serious Dungeon Keeper vibes. "As the town expands in all directions, new kinds of steamfolk find their way to the settlement — and their needs are ever more complex to satisfy. To keep everyone content, you'll need to make sure everyone works their darn hardest," we're told. "Buy items to boost the efficiency of buildings. Keep goods flowing up and down the mine by speeding up the miners with encouraging jolts of electricity. Or just barter at the local train station and get what you need that way. It's all up to you!"

SteamWorld Build is promising five suitably SteamWorld-y maps packed with secrets and three difficulty levels to ensure anyone can enjoy managing their mining towns, plus if you play on PC, there's a free SteamWorld Build demo available on Steam now, so you can try it out for yourself. Thunderful hasn't offered a firm release date yet, so all we know is that SteamWorld Build will be coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One (as well as PS5, PS4, Steam, and Switch) at some point in 2023.
