Sea of Thieves devs considering smuggling, griefer protection, and more in five-year plan

By Heidi Nicholas,

Rare is busy celebrating the fifth anniversary of Sea of Thieves, but it seems ideas for a plan for the game's next five years include smuggling mechanics and more.

Sea of Thieves (which remains one of the best Xbox MMO games) is enjoying its fifth year celebrations, with Rare reminiscing about how the game got where it is today — but it seems we also have a glimpse of possibilities for the future, with Rare apparently already having had a meeting about the game's next five years.
The documentary above, called Sea of Thieves: Voyage of a Lifetime, looks at "the course of SoT, from earliest prototype to fifth anniversary, and hear from both the people who brought this pirate sandbox to life and the community that calls it home." But the Sea of Thieves team isn't only looking back — an Xbox Wire interview notes that the team has already had a meeting about the next five years for the game, with ideas including "smuggling mechanics, the option for players to be rewarded for protecting other players from griefers, and even a mechanic for ‘painting’ screenshots."

It sounds as though all these ideas — if they come to fruition — could still be some time off, but it seems the team are confident about even further in the future, with creative director Mike Chapman, saying, "I think ten years of Sea of Thieves will feel like a long time — but also, we’ll blink and be there. And I still think we’ll have unfinished business when we get to that point.”

Are you a Sea of Thieves veteran, or have you only just taken to the seas? What are your thoughts on the game on its fifth anniversary? Let us know in the comments!
