Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Details Emerge

As we tweeted out earlier today (You do follow us, don't you?), BioWare has confirmed the oft-speculated multiplayer for their upcoming Mass Effect 3 with the existence of co-op missions. In a forum post earlier this evening, BioWare's Chris Priestly provided gamers with an FAQ on this mode, assuages some fears and gives a good bit of info to get excited about.

I encourage all Mass Effect fans to pop over to their forums to read the full FAQ, but here are the main details including direct quotes for the two biggest nuggets.

The general description of the 4-Player Co-Op Mode:

Join your friends in the all-out galactic war to take Earth back. The universe of Mass Effect expands with the addition of new co-op multiplayer missions, playable over Xbox Live, PSN and PC internet. Players can choose from a variety of classes and races, form an elite Special Forces squad, and combine their weapons, powers and abilities to devastating effect as they fight together to liberate key territories from enemy control. Success in multi-player will have a direct impact on the outcome of the single player campaign, giving players an alternative method of achieving ultimate victory against the greatest threat mankind – and the entire galaxy – has ever faced.
Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War

As a bonus to the campaign, BioWare is introducing the Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War system, a new way for players to manage and experience the galactic war from multiple fronts, including a new 4-player co-op mode. The key to saving the galaxy is the “Galactic Readiness” level, measured by Commander Shepard’s ability to apply
every possible asset – people, weapons, resources, armies, fleets – in the final battle against the Reapers. Players can impact their game’s Galactic Readiness level in multiple ways via the Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War system, including multiplayer. Other platforms and interfaces will be announced in the coming months. It is important to note that the system is entirely optional and just another way players can have control over your game experience – it is still possible to achieve the optimal, complete ending of the game in Mass Effect 3 through single-player alone.
A few bullet point highlights:

* The co-op portions of Mass Effect 3 were developed by BioWare's Montreal studio, meaning that resources were NOT diverted away from the single-player experience (being developed at BioWare Edmonton). It is important to note that BOTH teams are under the same direction that lead and, namely Casey Hudson.

* The multiplayer portion will feature new, user-created characters. (i.e. No Garrus, Liara or Wrex in the MP.)

* The multiplayer experience is completely independent from the main campaign and does not need to be completed to get the "perfect" ending.

* On the flip side, experimenting and excelling in the multiplayer portion gives you an alternate way to improve your "readiness" in the campaign.

* DLC is being planned for Mass Effect 3, but BioWare is not going into specifics.

* Your Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 saves will not impact the multiplayer experience.

* The co-op experience will feature character progression, weapon upgrading and leveling up.

As I mentioned, these are just a few highlights; interested/concerned gamers should most-definitely check out the full post before commencing a rapturous explosion or vitriolic freak out.

Mass Effect 3 is set for release on March 6th in North America and on March 9th across Europe.
