TA Gaming Stats - Oct 17th to Oct 23rd 2011

Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360) is a hit. As of the time of writing on Saturday night, over 21,000 gamers have started the latest adventure of the Caped Crusader. In every chart possible this first week, the goddamn Batman is #1. This includes the genre chart as well.

Oh. Right. Forgot the spoiler warning at the start of that paragraph.

This report is for the period October 17th to October 23rd 2011.

Games Started
39,248 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 59,360 games between them (1,443 different games).

Bold prediction: Batman: Arkham City remains on top for two straight weeks.

Forza Motorsport 4 broke 10k total gamers in its second week, with it now sitting at a total of 13,193. For a racing game, that is quite a number of gamers. For the triple-A, top of the racing genre franchise that is Forza, I think that is actually a bit of a disappointment.

RAGE is just above Forza 4 in total gamers with 13,384. RAGE is the heralded return to shooters for id and had a very extensive marketing campaign behind it. This too makes a total of just over 13k in a few weeks look like a bit of a let-down.

Gears of War 3 may not hit 75k gamers at this point. It might just have to settle for 70k gamers. Continuing the game of "expected success vs. actual success", Dark Souls is a big winner with only 8,242 total gamers through today. The difference between Dark Souls and RAGE or Forza 4 is that Dark Souls is a hardcore game that has very little mass market appeal. Over 8k gamers already? That is a mark of success.

Dead Rising 2: Off The Record (Xbox 360) continues to bring the disappointment by failing to add even 1,000 new gamers this week. FIFA 12 also added under 1,000 new gamers, but is already over 10k in total, a mark that Dead Rising: Off the Record seems unlikely to ever hit.

The other Survival Horror title in the top ten, Dead Island (Xbox 360), continues to truck along; now only a hundred away from breaking 25k total gamers. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon and Deus Ex: Human Revolution bring up the rear of the top ten with decent numbers for each. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon is in a small genre with a limited fanbase, while the latest Deus Ex has been out for a number of weeks.

Top Retail Games Started

Guardian Heroes leads the pack of under-performing XBLA titles. The last two weeks have seen low numbers coming from the arcade titles, but this is most likely due to the glut of blockbuster retail titles and not a testament to the quality of the recent arcade offerings.

Bejeweled 3 is the most expensive Bejeweled title on the marketplace and as the third entry in a series not known for extreme leaps from one game to the next, such a low number may not be a surprise.

The bigoted, anti-Orc title Orcs Must Die! shows extreme signs of slow-down now that it broke 1k gamers. I expect a lot of people are waiting for this one to go on sale before they pick it up.

Speaking of sales, Shadow Complex returns to the chart with just a very teeny tiny gain in its overall number. Such is life for one of the top-selling arcade games of all time.

I am curious about those that picked up REAL STEEL. Did you grab it because you liked the movie or the price tag (800 MSP)?

Sudoku (WP) gained lots of ground thanks to increased worldwide availability. The WP7 marketplace recently expanded to include more parts of Europe, which accounts for the sudden surge of interest in Flowerz (WP) - a free title.

Jet Car Stunts (WP) marks the return of brand new titles to the WP7 chart, but even with a truly catchy name, it can not defeat two free games and the recent Deal of the Week: iBlast Moki (WP).

Games Completed
5,089 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 7,158 games between them (1,002 different games).
RAGE leads an under-performing pack of completed titles. Why are so few gamers, well under 10% of the site, completing games these days? Is it the sheer number of titles available now or is it that some of those recent releases have truly insane achievements?

Speaking of which, X-Men: Destiny is, according to friends on my feed, a very easy completion. Those looking to boost their GS should rent that one and enjoy the relatively pain-free 1k point boost.

As for this chart, a number of games are here because of recent DLC or, in the case of Madden NFL 12, a patch.

Crysis, with a total completion percentage of 18.13% has to be easier than I thought it would be. Resident Evil 4 HD (Xbox 360), on the other hand, has only a 12% completion rate and, given my track record with older Resident Evil titles, would be a very hard completion for myself.

Top Retail Games Completed

Torchlight again? I guess when a game is popular and requires grinding, it is completed piecemeal by the community.

I am impressed by those that finished Guardian Heroes for the second straight week. Less impressive? Harms Way, which boasts a completion rate of only 55.97%. That number should be significantly higher, especially if I never, ever want to see it on this chart again.

Dead Rising 2: Case West, Dead Rising 2: Case Zero and Costume Quest should both be higher next week thanks to being this week's Deal of the Week (or Shocktober sale).

I do have to ask, why is UNO (Xbox 360) here? Wait, that's right, it was included in the Deal of the Week just a little while ago, right?

Sudoku as number one is no shock, but let's have a brief show of hands: if you completed Sudoku without resorting a to a cheatsheet, raise your hand.

Collapse! (WP) continues its quest to be the first game with a 100% completion rate. Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Burning Earth is at a 98% completion rate while Collapse! (WP7) is only at 92%.

Now back to your regular stats.

Top Retail Achievements Won

Bejeweled 3 was the second-most started game this week, yet it nearly sweeps the achievements chart. Guardian Heroes was the most started game this week, but it only grabbed spots #9 and #10.

Huh. Go figure.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

Again, we have an upset in the expected natural order of things. Jet Car Stunts (WP7) was #4 on the most started chart and it upset #3, Minesweeper (WP7), while #2 iBlast Moki (WP7) is nowhere to be seen.

These are not the results I am looking for.
