Now that the chaos of Black Friday and Cyber Monday is drawing to a close, people tend to reflect on the amount of money that they've managed to save through the amazing bargains over the weekend. However, I'd like to take a moment to raise awareness of a charity helping less-fortunate children around the world, and how you can help them.
Child's Play is a non-profit charity organization - created by Mike and Jerry of Penny-Arcade.com in 2003 - that has grown to the point where it will surpass over a million dollars worth of donations each year. Hospital pediatric wards put up wish lists on Amazon for items that their patients can use while staying in the hospital. Hospital budgets usually do not include a section for a Nintendo DS, or a DVD copy of Toy Story 2
, and that is where Child's Play steps in.
My wife and I donate every year to Child's Play instead of buying gifts for one another. We do this because, as a baby, my wife had a multitude of health problems, culminating in open heart surgery at the age of four. All of her earliest memories are from being in the long term care section of pediatric wards, but in particular, she remembers Shands Children's Hospital in Gainesville Florida. She remembers being bored with only paper and crayons to keep herself entertained between surgeries. That is why we donate to the Shands Children's Hospital through Child's Play every year.
To find a hospital near you, or even across the world from you, that is taking part in Child's Play, all you have to do is click this link: Child's Play Donation Page
Certain hospitals, such as the Cairo Children's Cancer Hospital in Egypt, the Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand and Sydney Children's Hospital in Sydney, Australia will only accept Paypal donations. If you click their icons on the map, you will be taken directly to the Paypal donation site. For all other hospitals, you may click their icon and be brought directly to their Amazon wish list.
Hospitals in Canada, such as Children's Hospital of Winnipeg are registered with Amazon.ca.
Hospitals in the UK such as the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital are registered with Amazon.co.uk.
If you can not buy an item, you can also text "GAMERS" to 50555 and donate $5.
If you can not support Child's Play through donations yourself, please at least pass the word along to friends, family and co-workers so that they know gamers can unite and be a force for good in this world.
