Coinciding with the release of the newest dashboard update, the Xbox Companion App is out now exclusively for Windows Phone.

What makes the companion app so special? As we detailed in our previous coverage, you can do things like navigate your Xbox, search for marketplace content, and control playback, all from your handset. Also, you can check up on your friends, set beacons, and peak at your achievements. This new promotional trailer released by Microsoft shows off the capabilities quite well:

Discover great entertainment with the power and convenience of your Windows Phone! Search for your favorite movies, TV shows, music, and games, and play them on your Xbox from your phone. Xbox 360 console and Xbox LIVE membership required.

Best of all, this added (yet optional) functionality is free. You can download the app for your WP7 device here, or directly from your phone. The app requires Windows 7.5 (Mango).
