At last year's VGAs, Namco Bandai Games announced
that Tekken Tag Tournament 2
would be coming to consoles as a sequel to the title which spawned the tag-based fighting genre - 1999's Tekken Tag Tournament
Namco Bandai Games has now confirmed that the sequel has a more solid release date of "September 2012" tagged to it.
Not only that, the development team also wishes to share more details about several aspects of their "labour of love". Firstly, the latest title is set to see the largest-ever roster of fighters do battle, as more than fifty combatants will come equipped with a larger arsenal and a greater variety of move sets. Similarly, the number of battle stages will also increase, with countries from across the globe being used as in-game locations.
The franchise's game modes and gameplay mechanics also seem to be receiving a fair bit of attention. It seems the developer is keen to encourage genre newcomers, whilst retaining Tekken
's core fanbase. As a result, Tekken Tag Tournament 2
will throw the rulebook out of the window by having solo versus tag-team matches, alongside traditional one-on-one battles. Fancy something different again? Why not try four-player, two-on-two team battles to decide who is the Tekken
king or queen among your friends.
faithful and genre newcomers will likely all appreciate the new Fight Lab mode. This mode will allow gamers to become a Tekken
master by teaching everything you need to know to become the ultimate fighting machine.
Katsuhiro Harada, Tekken Project Director at Namco Bandai Games, explains why the new features are necessary:
Tekken Tag Tournament is one of the most beloved entries in the TEKKEN series – not just among fans but also for myself and the entire development team, so crafting the sequel has been a labour of love for everyone here... To truly make this game stand up to the high benchmark set by the original, we have injected some exciting features and modes that will revolutionize the online fighting game community and allow new players to enjoy and master the game – so there will be something for everyone
Are you a genre newcomer, who's looking forward to making a start in the tag-based fighting genre, or a lifelong Tekken
fan who can't wait for the battle to re-commence? Vice President of Marketing for Namco Bandai Games' American business, Carlson Choi, has promised that further details will be unveiled in the very near future:
There is so much packed into Tekken Tag Tournament 2 that we can’t wait to reveal to fans of both fighting games and fans of all games. The latest entry into the iconic series will have the level of depth expected of the highest-selling fighting game franchise of all time, but also the accessibility for new fans and gaming noobs alike
We here at TA have been reliably informed that E3 2012 will lift the lid on those additional reveals. Stay tuned during our E3 coverage to find out more.
