Capybara brought their XBLA Award-winning
title, Super T.I.M.E. Force
to the show floor and it was really
helpful to see it in action, mostly because I now understand what was going on. For those of you who have looked at the screenshots, they’re… chaotic, but there's a definite reason behind that chaos and it's not just to have loads of enemies trying to kill you.Super T.I.M.E. Force
plays like the Contra
style platformers of yesteryear on the surface, but with a very unique twist. You're meant to die frequently, but you get rewarded by doing so, in a sense. Every time you die, your next life begins with not only you, but a ghost of your previous life playing the level as well. When the ghost gets to the point where he dies, you can save him thus granting yourself a checkpoint. Just check out the screen below - every character that looks like they have lines through them is a ghost. The one with 'save' over his head is a ghost who reached the point where the player dies previously. Save him, get a checkpoint.
The reason why you get the level of chaos you do in the screen above is because you can have multiple ghosts running around: one ghost for each life you lose. As one PAX attendee said: “this game actually gets better the more you suck at it”. Believe me, it’s not at all a knock on the title, but seeing as it’s a one hit kill type game, you’re going to die a lot and you’ll need those ghosts to help you get through the levels. The game was set to 30 lives at PAX. That’s a lot of ghosts! Capybara did say, however, that they were not yet sure how many lives you'd have in the final build of the game.Super T.I.M.E. Force
