One year. It was last May that TrueAchievement himself approached the Newshounds with his idea of a new weekly feature showcasing weekly stats. Everyone on this site enjoys stats on some level, so the new feature made perfect sense. I was honored to be given the task of providing some personality and analysis to the numbers provided by TrueAchievement. During the last year, when I have been unable to cover these stats for you, we have had Matrarch
and N0T PENNYS B0AT
fill in and help ensure that nothing stops the stats.
Some people were wondering why we didn't provide a yearly summary for the end of 2011, but since stats were only tabulated beginning on May 16th 2011, it would not have represented the entire year. Now? Well, since May 16th was this past Wednesday, now you get a run down of the last year.
One caveat before you look at these numbers and it involves DLC. Some of you may have selected the "Don't include DLC" option for your completion percentage, but for these numbers, DLC matters a great deal. A game is not complete unless someone has every available achievement and this includes DLC.
Without further ado, the stats that you have all been waiting for, 2011 in TA stats! This report is for the period May 16th, 2011 to May 16th, 2012 Most Popular Retail Games
Remember, these stats are simply cold, hard numbers without any personal bias. That means yes, Gears of War 3
did beat out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
and yes, over half of all TA community members played the latest entry of the Gears of War
franchise. Modern Warfare 3
is not a big shock at number two, though I personally was expecting Skyrim
to beat it.
After The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
, we get a significant drop in numbers with the next three being really close to one another. If we look at these numbers in a few months, L.A. Noire (Xbox 360)
may just be number four instead of Battlefield 3
are also the only two new IPs to crack the retail chart for the entire year. Every other game is part of an established franchise. Crysis 2
was not my pick for this chart, as honestly, I thought Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
would manage a spot. The re-make of Master Chief's very first adventure is actually number eleven and missed a spot by under 1k gamers. Gears of War 3
- 88,769Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- 80,819The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- 58,159L.A. Noire (Xbox 360)
- 57,215Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360)
- 41,449Mass Effect 3
- 39,800Assassin's Creed: Revelations
- 38,333Most Popular Arcade Games
From when I began working on these numbers, which was done entirely by hand, this chart has undergone some dramatic shifts. Both Trials Evolution
and Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
will go down as two of the most popular XBLA games of all time so you can only imagine my pain and suffering as they rocketed up this chart in the last few weeks. Minecraft
only needed one week, ONE WEEK, to be the third most popular game of the past year!
Add in The Walking Dead (Xbox 360)
and you have three games from the past month that made this chart. Equally amazing, the Summer of Arcade games from 2011 made such an impact that three of them are also on this chart. Bastion (Xbox 360)
, TA's 2011 XBLA Game of the Year, is easily the top new IP of 2011 regarding arcade games. Fellow Summer of Arcade release https://www.trueachievements.com/From-Dust-xbox-360.htm
was number three until Minecraft
passed it by on May 16th right at the deadline for these stats.
My personal picks for surprise entrants on this chart are Fez
and Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team
as I never expected them to be such hits. It seems almost fitting that those two are separated by only 25 gamers. https://www.trueachievements.com/Trials-Evolution-xbox-....htm
- 6,467Most Popular Kinect Fun Labs
This one was a judgement call on my part as I felt the XBLA chart was far more interesting once I removed the Kinect Fun Labs titles from it. Out of respect, I went ahead and complied this chart of nothing but the Kinect Fun Labs top ten to get across just how popular these apps were when they first debuted during E3 last year.https://www.trueachievements.com/Junk-Fu-xbox-360.htm
are the three that missed the cut for this chart. https://www.trueachievements.com/Kinect-Me-xbox-360.htm
- 1,949Most Popular Windows Phone Games
Regular readers of the weekly stats could have predicted this chart. Both Minesweeper (WP)
and Sudoku (WP)
are incredibly popular due to timeless gameplay and a price point that no one can argue with: free. What no one could have predicted is just how close these games would be in terms of overall numbers. Angry Birds (WP)
, TA's 2011 Windows Phone Game of the Year and TA's 2011 Puzzle Game of the Year, is only 16 gamers ahead of Breeze (WP)
. That is the closest race on all of these charts and barely outs the difference of 22 between Sudoku
and Shuffle Party (WP)
on the very same chart.https://www.trueachievements.com/Minesweeper-xbox-360.htm
- 2,511Plants vs. Zombies (WP)
- 2,214Kinectimals (WP)
- 2,150Most Completed Retail Titles
Of course https://www.trueachievements.com/NCIS-Game-xbox-360.htm
would make this chart! Every now and then, we need a reminder that yes, the TA community does like easy points.
With the NCIS
mention out of the way, I need to remind everyone that DLC impacted this list, but even then, it's great seeing a year end list with both https://www.trueachievements.com/Captain-America-xbox-3....htm
Of particular interest is https://www.trueachievements.com/Portal-2-xbox-360.htm
, as a number of TA members had completed the game prior to May 16th 2011 and were not counted for these stats. Portal 2
was simply a very, very popular game last year. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- 10,712L.A. Noire (Xbox 360)
- 4,742Mass Effect 3
- 2,149Most Completed Arcade Titleshttps://www.trueachievements.com/DAYTONA-USA-xbox-360.htm
is another of those, "Oh right, we're an achievement site" games. The overall completion numbers are quite low but again, very recent releases make a strong showing. Standing out from this crowd is Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Special Editions (EU)
as it is only available in Europe and is the best performing region specific game of the year.
In more "Wow, Minecraft
is really popular news", had these numbers been calculated today as I write this (May 18th), it would have moved up to fourth place. Have I mentioned it is a $20 game that has been out for under two weeks? Walking Dead: Episode 1
has also been out for just a few weeks, but with only one hundred GS and eight achievements, it is actually intended to be a quick completion. https://www.trueachievements.com/The-Walking-Dead-xbox-....htm
- 1,205Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Special Editions (EU)
- 1,018Most Completed Windows Phone Titleshttps://www.trueachievements.com/COLLAPSE-xbox-360.htm
as number one was to be expected as regular readers of the weekly stats know I have an ongoing vendetta against this game and its lack of a 100% completion rate. I almost cried when one of my friends took his sweet time getting it finished. https://www.trueachievements.com/Womens-Murder-Club-xbo....htm
may have had a significant amount of completions prior to May 16th 2011, but even after we started with site stats, people were still finishing this game. Enough in fact that it sneaked onto the chart at number ten over Orbital (WP)
- 1,285Kinectimals (WP)
- 657Most Won Retail Achievements
I decided to highlight the most won achievements of the past year by eschewing the numbers, which frankly, most people tended to ignore in the first place, and going with a more visual representation.
Regarding the retail achievements, more people earned these ten achievements than even started Modern Warfare 3
. the second most popular retail game of the past year. Most Won Arcade Achievements
This time around, the Kinect Fun Lab app Kinect fun Labs: Kinect Me
is included in the chart. Despite knowing how popular it is, Trials Evolution
continues to surprise me with its performance. The TA Community loves hurting a digital stunt rider over and over and over and over and "Why can't I bunny hop this gap properly!?" and over and over...Most Won Windows Phone Achievements
As usual, the most variety in achievements comes from the Windows Phone. If Angry Birds
did not have an achievement for busting an absurd number of blocks, it would have appeared in the completions chart. The continued existence of Shuffle Party
on all of these charts though is a bit baffling.
That concludes our very first year of TA Stats!
I want to thank all of you for working so hard to unlock achievements that we can see crazy numbers nearly every week.
Here's to another year of stats!
