Avowed's combat is already being improved, as recent Xbox footage was outdated Avowed's director has revealed a few more details about Obsidian's upcoming RPG, and confirmed that its combat will be improved when it launches on Xbox Series X|S and PC later this year.Tom West Published 05 Feb 2024 FollowtopicsXbox Game StudiosPC Game PassXbox Game PassXbox Series X|SAction-RPGTom West Carrie Patel, Avowed's game director, has spoken about Obsidian's upcoming RPG, confirming that Obsidian is working on improving the combat, that multiple endings will be available, and more.Following the Xbox's Developer Direct last month, we said Avowed looked gorgeous but the combat seemed to be missing something. During an appearance on the Dropped Frames podcast, Patel spoke about the community's response to Avowed's combat. "One of the heartening things has been seeing fans call out some of the things that we are actively working on," Patel said. "Like the sense of hitting and impacts as you're attacking enemies." Patel says the footage shown last month was "a few weeks behind where we were even when that footage was released," and asks players to "trust us, we're working on it."Additionally, Patel spoke about the game's combat a little more, revealing that Avowed will feature multiple enemy variants, many of which can affect the player character by knocking them down or by using unblockable attacks, encouraging you to switch weapon sets regularly.Elsewhere in the interview, Patel spoke about character customization. Although the skill point system is classless, Patel says that character creation will impact some of the gameplay mechanics and roleplaying aspects. The game's many companions do have very archetypical themes, by the sounds of it. A recent deep dive with Xbox Wire revealed that Avowed is made up of "open zones," and to that effect, Obsidian won't be adding mounts to the game. Some combat abilities and various pieces of gear — yes, there is loot to find — will offer you traversal bonuses, however. While Patel didn't discuss endings on the Dropped Frames podcast, a recent interview with IGN revealed that there will be multiple endings available, saying: "I mean it's an Obsidian game. What else would we be if we didn't have a few different endings?" How many possible endings isn't clear yet, but it sounds like we'll have many choices to make on our adventure."You have to approach it with a degree of range, both in the spread and placement of those consequences and also the nature of those consequences," Patel said. "Some things need to have surprising but believable outcomes. If everything plays out exactly as you expect, it could feel a little boring. And at the same time, not every quest needs to have world-ending consequences. Some absolutely do have huge impacts for the characters in the world around you, but sometimes the story you're experiencing is just a very deeply personal one for the characters involved. And that's okay too."As we slowly approach its launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC this fall, we'll be regularly updating our round-up of everything we know about Avowed, so keep an eye there for any new details you might have missed.
