Warhorse Studios’ huge medieval RPG sequel is out now — and too big to explore on foot! So, speaking of warhorses, here's our Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 easy horse guide for how to get your horse Pebbles back, to speed up your hunt of the Kingdom Come: Deliverance II achievements!

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 easy horse guide

Having a horse makes a huge, huge difference in Henry’s world — especially if that horse is our old pal Pebbles. We’ll keep this as spoiler-free as possible, but if you want to avoid seeing any info, go no further!

My time with the game for my Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 preview was enough to remind me what an important thing it is to have a horse in these games. Aside from making Henry seem much better off in the medieval world, having a horse transforms what would otherwise be a long, weary trek for Henry from one side of the map to the other, into an unbelievably short journey.

You can fast-travel between areas you’ve discovered, but doing so opens you up to the possibility of running into dangers en route. With a horse, not only can you still enjoy the scenery, but any dangers you come across can be swiftly ridden away from. Get into trouble in a combat encounter? Ride away, aim at your pursuing enemies, and repeat. It might not be fair combat, but life in medieval Bohemia isn’t exactly fair for Henry either.

So, you need a horse: but where to get one? You can buy horses from several places in KCD2, but since Henry starts off with little more than his ragged clothes and the embarrassment of having just been stuck in the pillory, legally buying one at the start of the game isn’t very feasible. Horses go for a lot of Groschen, depending on their stats, and even a little haggling probably wouldn’t be enough to save you more than the price of a rotting carrot.

There is also a black market for selling stolen horses, but this again comes with some issues. Henry, at the start of the game, hasn’t much in the way of armor — not even much in the way of the clothes he’s meant to wear beneath the armor. He has no weapons, little stamina, and practically no healing items. Most horse-owning NPCs in the game are nobles or mercenaries: heavily armed, and easily able to defeat a practically-naked horse-stealing Henry.

Even stealing horses from farms and villages would be tricky, since there are usually enough people around to ensure at least one witness will go running for the guards. Unless you fancy trying to knock all those witnesses out (bear in mind again that little amount of stamina and Henry’s ensuing difficulty with chasing and punching) and dealing with an even bigger fallout from the guards, you’re pretty stuck.

KCD2 mercilessly puts you right at the start when it comes to combat. Even after stealing a horse, you’d then have to get it all the way to the horse seller, dealing with any issues on the way, and likely without the money to patch yourself up or feed yourself if you run into trouble.

So, what choice does that leave us? Pebbles! Pebbles was our stalwart companion in the first Kingdom Come: Deliverance game and, as pretty much the first horse we have, this meant that many of us (despite Pebbles’ comparatively poor stats compared to all the equine excellence available in the game) would have felt it the utmost betrayal at the thought of trading her in.

We won’t go into spoilers too much here, but Henry and Pebbles are parted pretty early on in the sequel. Near the start of the game, when Henry is unleashed properly into the open-world, he learns that a nearby stud farm in Semine sells excellent horses. As he points out, however, that doesn't do much for a Henry who’s penniless and fresh out of the stocks.

However, what Henry doesn’t know is that his own faithful Pebbles has wound up at the farm in Seline. The game doesn’t put this down as a quest for you, and also makes it clear that you’d be unlikely to afford any others. If you didn’t go there anyway just to explore, you’d miss rediscovering your horse.

Where is Pebbles located?

If you start looking for Pebbles right near the start, when Henry’s in Troskowitz, you’ll find the horse farm at a settlement to the south and west of the map. If you leave town with the apothecary on your left and head down the main road south-west, taking none of the turnings, you’ll come to Semine.

The horse trader is the first major part of the settlement you’ll see, and heading through the arch and courtyard into the field of horses behind will prompt Henry to recognize Pebbles. You can then speak to the trader standing about in the field about her.

How to get Pebbles for free

Turning up in ragged, unwashed condition of course doesn’t do much to impress the stud farm owner or make him believe that you really did lose your horse, but you can work through the dialogue options with him to convince him otherwise (or, at least, to make him uncertain enough that he’d rather give Pebbles to you than cause any trouble). We saved and tried the conversation a few times, and it seems an easy enough skill check that it shouldn’t cause new players any issues.

Nor does it seem that money for Pebbles will be an issue, besides anything spent on improving her gear, as she doesn’t seem to need feeding as Mutt does to improve his bond. The upshot is that you wind up getting Pebbles scott-free. Getting a horse (and not having to shell out any Groschen for it) is a major deal and will massively improve Henry’s odds of thriving in medieval Bohemia, but your troubles don’t end there.

Life with Pebbles

She comes with a shockingly bad bridle and saddle, and what’s more, everybody takes the piss out of Pebbles. You’ll get roasted every time you ride into town, and even “beggar” NPCs will tell you they wouldn’t ride Pebbles if they were paid too. I know she’s not got the best stats or gear, but seriously, what is wrong with the wonderful Pebbles?

That’s all for today, but if you’re looking for more info on the game, here’s all the content coming with the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 post-launch roadmap — including more horse content. Will you be high-tailing it over to Pebbles? Let us know in the comments!
