Even more blocky video games could be on the way for Xbox in the future, as Lego is now making its own video games. In the past, Lego has always used third-party studios for its titles, such as TT Games, the team behind the Lego Harry Potter Collection achievements, and now it looks like the firm wants to try its hand at replicating the success of the Xbox action-adventure games.

Lego sets up in-house development team for video games

  • Lego plans to make its own video games via a first-party studio
  • The firm is currently collaborating with Epic Games for Lego Fortnite
  • 2K Games is potentially developing a Lego football game
As reported by The Guardian, Lego's chief executive officer Niels Christiansen revealed that the toy maker has tripled its team of software engineers since 2022. Alongside its continued work on Lego Fortnite, which launched in 2023, Lego plans to embark on a "multi-year journey" to develop its own video games.

Christiansen didn't confirm if we'll continue seeing games from third-party studios, and hasn't discussed the projects Lego is currently working on, but it's interesting nonetheless. In an interview with the Financial Times, Christiansen also said, “We can definitely say, as long as we’re under the Lego brand we can cover experiences for kids of all ages, digital or physical. [Games development in-house] is something we’re building up.”

In the past, TT Games has developed some fantastic Lego games based on popular franchises, including Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, DC, Indiana Jones, Jurassic World, and more. 2K Games launched Lego 2K Drive in 2023, bringing an open-world racing twist for Lego fans. The company is said to be working on a Lego football game as well, although we're yet to learn anything about it.

We've seen some fantastic Lego games from third-party studios, so hopefully Lego will continue to license some video games to outside talent alongside its internal projects. If you fancy diving in for some goofy fun now, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is currently available alongside the best Game Pass games.
