Looking at global Xbox achievement data from the Senua's Saga: Hellblade II achievements reveals that nearly 90% of Hellblade 2 Xbox players haven't completed its story, which is pretty surprising considering it only takes around seven hours to beat the Xbox exclusive.

Xbox players aren't finishing Hellblade 2

The End the Tyranny achievement is an unmissable story-related achievement that unlocks at the conclusion of Hellblade 2's sixth and final chapter. It's straightforward to unlock as it requires no extra effort other than finishing the game, but strangely, an incredible 87% of Xbox players who have fired up Hellblade 2 in the two weeks since launch somehow still don't have this achievement (this sits at 34% for TrueAchievements members). It's well established now that gamers don't often finish their games, but to see only 13% of players make it through to the end of Hellblade 2, which only takes around seven hours to do, is disappointing. Interestingly, if we head on over to Steam, things are only marginally better, with 37% of Steam players unlocking End the Tyranny.

Diving deeper into the stats, we can see that only 52% of Hellblade 2 Xbox players made it past the first boss and unlocked The Next Sign achievement. You encounter Hellblade 2's first boss after about 30 minutes, and he's not exactly hard to beat, so for nearly half of the game's players to not even make it that far, is pretty baffling. On Steam, 84% of Hellblade 2 players have this achievement.

Nearly 90% of Hellblade 2 Xbox players haven't finished its story

We're not exactly sure why 87% of Hellblade 2 Xbox players haven't seen the game through to its conclusion, especially as it's such a short game. Unlike Hellblade: Senua's Saga, which had a myriad of achievement unlock problems causing its data to be unreliable, the achievements in Hellblade 2 all appear to be working correctly, so we can rule that out. One reason could be the lower barrier of entry that Xbox Game Pass provides — curious subscribers can check out Hellblade 2 for almost free, perhaps realize it's not quite for them, and quickly drop it all while being recorded in Xbox's global achievement stats. Another reason could be down to the game's dark story and themes. Hellblade 2's opening chapter is incredibly depressing, with an injured Senua moving at a snail's pace through a storm-battered beach that is littered with wrecked boats and dead bodies; this could easily put players off if they're not in the mood. Things don't get much happier in subsequent chapters either, so I wouldn't be surprised if players dropped the game for something a little lighter and plan to come back to it later.

While I understand Hellblade 2 might not be to everyone's taste, it's a bit of a shame to see so few players make it through to the end of the game. For me, Hellblade 2 was a stand-out gaming experience that fully gripped and immersed me in its dark world. You can read more on why I think you should check out the game (and finish it!) in our Hellblade 2 review.
