If you have fond memories of wading through hordes of zombies with the threat of player-controlled special infected hanging over you in the fantastic Left 4 Dead games, then it might be worth keeping an eye on Warhammer: Vermintide 2's upcoming Versus mode.

Fatshark is currently testing its Versus mode on Steam, which plays similarly to Vermintide 2's co-op mode but also introduces enemy players as special enemies for a 4v4 player-versus-player-plus-enemies battle for the highest score. We don't have a release date for the mode just yet, but over 10,000 players on PC are currently playing its closed alpha test.

In Fatshark's "casual asymmetric" Versus mode, four players play as the Ubersreik Five fighting through a section of a co-op map while completing objectives, earning points for each objective they complete. AI Skaven will hound you just as they do in the main mode, but with the addition of four player-controlled special Skaven called the Pactsworn, who will attempt to stop the heroes from earning points. Once the heroes reach the end of the map or have been disabled the teams switch sides. The team with the highest number of points at the end of a match will be crowned the winner.

"The Versus game mode is definitely something that players familiar with the genre will recognize," Fatshark says. "We want to honor our predecessor in this space while adding our own unique melee-oriented flair to it that most of our players recognize us for."

Fatshark hasn't given a public release window for Versus yet, but says that this closed alpha test is "just one step in a multi-stage process to get both the team and our players feeling good about the game mode and how it plays!"

The game is already challenging to complete, with 120 Warhammer: Vermintide 2 achievements spread across the main game and eight DLC packs. It'll be interesting to see if Versus launches with its own set of achievements in the future.
