While Baldur's Gate 3's shadow drop onto Xbox Series X|S during The Game Awards last week was met with excitement from fans, its arrival on the platform has been overshadowed by a bug that has been wiping save progress. While Microsoft and Larian Studios work on a fix, Xbox Support has published several steps you can take to limit your chance of encountering the issue, but it's not a guaranteed safety net.

Following many comments from players encountering the bug, who have lost many hours of gameplay because of it — up to 20 hours of work in some cases, Larian rolled out some stability fixes for Baldur's Gate 3 earlier this week. Although the update helped "with some of these issues," it didn't squash the bug for good. Microsoft and Larian are currently working on a fix, but if you plan on playing Baldur's Gate 3 in the meantime, there are some steps you can take to limit your chances of losing saves.

As detailed on the Xbox Support page, Microsoft recommends that you save your game progress and quit the game completely when you've finished playing. When turning off your console, you should make sure that it's still receiving power, so don't turn it off by the mains. Unexpected issues can occur when the console loses power, as it still "runs checks and functions when turned off to help optimize your experience." Finally, the support page suggests you keep your console up to date with the latest console version.

"My team are very rightfully asleep but just to update you on the Xbox saves issue, we’re working with Microsoft on a second fix that should hopefully solve it," Larian's director of publishing Michael Douse said on X. "It’s looking optimistic. Not as simple as just patching the game itself, so kudos to the green team for being so on top."

Microsoft and Larian "are working to fix this ASAP," but you should take precautions when tackling the Baldur's Gate 3 achievements, or just wait for a fix.
