Vote now for April 2021's TA Playlist game

By The TA Playlist Team,
As you continue to explore all of the numerous worlds and levels in March's TA Playlist game, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, we have to pull you away from hunting down all those gems and chasing the thieves to choose next month's TA Playlist title.

For April, we’ve chosen the theme of "Game Pass Gems." We’ve picked a selection of games that are available with Xbox Game Pass and have less than 15,000 players but have a rating of at least 4.0/5.0 here on TA (which is accurate at the time of writing this article).

We hope you enjoy the games we’ve chosen!

Night in the Woods

Night In The Woods is a beautiful little adventure game developed by Infinite Fall and was originally released back in December 2017.

You play as Mae Borowski, a 20-year-old cat who is back visiting her hometown of Possum Springs after dropping out of college. You explore your childhood town with your friends while learning how life has been for those you left behind. The storyline is highly praised, so we don’t want to spoil too much of it for you.

In terms of achievements, Night in the Woods has an impressive ratio, with some of the highest value achievements requiring you to complete missions with your friends, such as Maestro, and also require you to complete specific tasks in order to collect sketches (Seriously), which will take multiple playthroughs. There's also a huge number of missable achievements. However, a wonderful walkthrough written by Samurai Ralan is available to guide you through the game.

Night in the Woods has a community rating of 4.0/5.0 on TA, having been started by 6,114 site users, and completed by only 5% of that number (313 people to be exact). It was added to Xbox Game Pass in September 2020 and takes between 10 and 20 hours to complete.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair Achievements

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a platformer game developed by Playtonic Games and originally released in 2019 (with a Win 10 version being released in 2020).

The game itself is a spin-off of the original game Yooka-Laylee, and you reprise the role of the titular characters; Yooka, a chameleon and Laylee, a bat, who have teamed up once again to take down Capital B, a capitalist bee who simply wants to get as rich as possible by exploiting everything possible. In the Overworld, you’ll be running around interacting with the characters in the Royal Stingdom and solving puzzles. Inside the levels, you’ll get into the platforming segment of the game.

Looking at the achievements, the rarest is a pesky “unlock all others” achievement, Plan Beaten. However, the other high-value achievements are related to finding several collectables, such as Tonic Boom, and defeating the big bad Capital B, Hive Won.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is currently sitting at a rating of 4.0/5.0, having been started by just under 12,000 of you. A mere 646 (equating to 5%) of you have completed the game so far.
It was added to Xbox Game Pass in December, and according to our site estimates, you can beat the game in 15-20 hours.

Desperados III

Desperados III

Desperados III is a real-time stealth/strategy game developer by Mimimi Productions and was released in June 2020.

Desperados III is the latest instalment in the Desperados series but is the first game in the series to be released on platforms other than PC. It acts as a prequel to the first game in the series and explores the origins of the main protagonist, John Cooper. Mr Cooper is a bounty hunter, hunting down a notorious bandit responsible for his father's death. On the way to your target, you can sneak around the game and silently kill enemies, assuming their disguises, hiding bodies and set-up accidental deaths.

The achievements are generally straightforward; however, a fair number of the high-valued achievements are related to actions that you will slowly grind out in-game, such as earning badges (Sherrif's Badge) and killing guards with certain abilities (Doubletime). You also have an achievement for hunting down some of the hidden characters based on the developers themselves (Veteran Bounty Hunter).

If you get stuck at any point, you can use the on-site walkthrough written by RSDAY.

Desperados III currently holds an average score of 4.6 out of 5.0 on TA. It’s been started by just under 3000 of you and has been completed by a mere 116 (4%). They’ve suggested that it’ll take 40-50 hours for you to get the completion. Desperados III was added to Xbox Game Pass in January 2021.

Frostpunk: Console Edition

Frostpunk

Frostpunk: Console Edition is our final choice for next month. It is a simulation/management city-building game developed by 11 Bit Studios and released in October 2019.

Frostpunk is set in an alternate-history late 19th century. Instead of the history we know, this timeline has the Earth freezing over, forcing the Earth’s inhabitants to fight and adapt for survival. You play as ‘The Captain’, the leader of possibly the last civilised society on Earth. It is up to you to build the city that your survivors live in, discover new technologies, explore frozen wastelands and, most importantly, manage and rule society to prepare it for life in a cold, unforgiving world.

This game has quite a hefty ratio, and the high-value achievements look to be a real challenge here, mostly revolving around completing different scenarios in extreme difficulties (The Winterhome Survivor) and surviving for as long at least 100 days in the hardest modes (Ultramarathon Extreme).

Frostpunk: Console Edition currently has a rating of 4.4 out of 5.0 here on TA. Of the just over 7900 of you that have started this game, only 35 people have so far completed it (coming out at a mighty 0%). There is no consensus on how long the game takes to complete, with some current estimates saying anything from 25-30 hours all the way up to 150-200 hours. Frostpunk was added to Xbox Game Pass in January 2020.

Take your pick from these four games that represent some hidden games that lurk in the depths of Xbox Game Pass and choose the game that we’ll all be playing next month.

The TA Playlist is a monthly community event. Everyone votes on which of four games to play, and then we all play through it in the following month. There's a dedicated hub to discuss everything about the game, from story beats to gameplay tips – and of course, you can track your achievement progress during the month as well. TA Playlist was created by Mark Delaney and is now run by Miles, Nici and Chewie.
