Vote now for August 2021's TA Playlist game — the TA Playlist team is also recruiting!

By The TA Playlist Team,
After a couple of weeks exploring Albion in Fable III, July's TA Playlist game, we must pull you away from hunting for weapons, balverines, and killing your spouses to decide on the TA Playlist game for August.

For August, we had a number of amazing themes suggested, with a personal favourite of ours being Rome-themed games (as the month is named after the first Roman Emperor); however, we couldn’t find enough eligible games that could be included (Ryse has previously won!). Instead, we decided to choose the theme of An Island Paradise to try and alleviate the desire for travel and sun after the events of the last year and a half.

Here are the four island paradises for you to choose from this month (and decide whether they are actually a paradise).

Tropico 6

Tropico 6

Tropico 6 is a simulation and management game developed by Limbic Entertainment and was released in late 2019. It is the latest entry into the Tropico series.

In Tropico 6, you play as El Presidente, the ruler of an archipelago in the Caribbean called Tropico. It’s up to you to decide the fate of your country either as a peace-loving statesman or a ruthless tyrant, or any mix in between, and build and control your country. You’ll face many challenges along the way and can even send your people to steal wonders of the world from other countries!

Looking at the achievements, there are several story-related achievements that cannot be missed, although considering their unlock rate, they may take a bit of work to reach, with all but four of the achievements having the rare Diamond associated with them. Indeed, some of the rarest achievements relate to finishing all the story missions (Been there, Done That), generating money with convict labour (Chain Gang), and ending protests (My Ways).

Tropico 6 has a community rating of 4.17/5.00 on TA, having been started by a mere 4,246 people at the time of writing, with a tiny 2% completion rate (84 people). The game should take you 40-50 hours to complete on average. Luckily for us, it’s currently available through Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming, having joined the program a week or so ago.

As usual, if Tropico 6 wins, you can pop an achievement in either the Xbox Edition or the Windows 10 edition, as both will count towards participation.

Far Cry 3 Classic Edition

Far Cry 3 Classic Edition is an open-world first-person shooter game released in 2018, with the original 360 game being released back in 2012. It is developed by Ubisoft Montreal.

Far Cry 3 is set on the fictional Rook Islands, a tropical archipelago that is free for you to explore as protagonist Jason Brody while trying to escape from a pirate lord, Vaas Montenegro, who kidnapped you and your friends after a skydiving trip. It’s then up to you and the native Rakyat tribe to rescue your friends and try to overthrow Vaas, hopefully escaping from the island alive.

Taking a look at the achievement list, there are a fair number of story related achievements that are unmissable and others that you’ll pick up during the natural playing of the game. Those that stand in the way of your completion the most are related to finding collectables, such as finding all the relics (Archeology 101) and the Letters of the Lost (Dead Letters), along with winning $1500 in poker games (Poker Bully). Strangely, one of the rarest achievements in the game relates to the relatively simple task of distracting enemies fully with a rock (Rock Always Wins), which seems to indicate that most people simply kill everyone rather than try distracting them.

Far Cry 3 is a beloved game here on TA with a rating of 4.21/5.00. Over 53,000 tracked users have started it but, with a little over 10,000 people completing this edition (equating to 19%). The original 360 game has closer to 180,000 people starting it, with only 9% completing it.
Thankfully, we have a decent walkthrough from matdan and transformed by PangoBara that can help guide you through the game. Far Cry 3 will take you between 20 and 25 hours to fully complete, making it the shortest game nominated this month.

As usual, if Far Cry 3 wins, you can pop an achievement in either the Classic Edition or the original 360 release, as both will count towards participation.

Dead Island Definitive Edition

Dead Island Definitive

Dead Island Definitive Edition is the penultimate nomination for August. The Definitive Edition was developed by Techland and released back in 2016. Looking at our site classifications, it is an open-world, action-horror RPG.

Dead Island takes place on the lush tropical resort destination called Banoi, off the coast of Papua New Guinea. After a high profile party, the four main characters are woken by an emergency message telling everyone to evacuate the island, which has been overtaken by plague-ridden flesh-eating creatures. Can you help the survivors to navigate and escape the island?

Looking at the achievements, anyone looking to maintain a total gamerscore ending in 5 or 0 may wish to look away, as many achievements have even values, such as Cardio with a score of 8. Some of the long-winded or harder achievements also have similar values, such as There and Back Again (for exploring the whole island) and Complete a Set (for killing one of each enemy type in a single co-op round).

Dead Island currently holds a decent score of 3.76/5.00 on TA and has been started by over 84,000 users, with a mere 3% (1,890) having completed it and rounded their score out. The completion is expected to take 50-60 hours, and we have a walkthrough written by Our Afflictions.
As usual, if Dead Island wins, you can pop an achievement in either the Definitive Edition or the original 360 release — both will count towards participation.

Tomb Raider - Definitive Edition

Tomb Raider DE Launch Trailer Screen

Tomb Raider - Definitive Edition is a third-person shooter/platformer, with a focus on exploration developed by Crystal Dynamics and originally released way back in 2014.

Obviously, you play as Lara Croft, a young archaeology graduate trying to discover the secrets of Himiko, the queen of an ancient, lost civilisation. While on her journey, she is shipwrecked on the mysterious island of Yamatai (off the coast of Japan). You must survive the island, and those that inhabit it, solve the puzzles, avoid the traps and ultimately uncover the myths of the island and Queen Himiko.

Looking at the achievements, those that stand in the way of a completion revolve around the multiplayer aspect of the game, such as reaching level 60 (True Commitment) and purchasing all upgrades (Shopaholic).

Tomb Raider holds a high 4.41 out of 5.00 rating here on TA, and a full completion would require 40-50 hours of your time. It’s been started by nearly 202,000 site users and completed by a mere 4,342 (around 2%). We also have an excellent walkthrough on-site written by MC0REBE. As usual, if Tomb Raider wins, you can pop an achievement in either the Definitive Edition or the original 360 release — both will count towards participation.

As always, join us over in the TA Playlist Hub to discuss the current TA Playlist game and for your votes for August!

We are recruting

The TA Playlist is currently run by just two of us, myself ManicMetalhead and ChewieOnIce. We decide on the themes and games that are nominated each month or speak with those we’ll be collaborating with to get their nominations. We also write these articles and keep an eye on everything Playlist related. We’re looking to add 1-2 more people to the team, mainly to help write summary articles at the end of each month, a feature that many enjoyed about the first incarnation of the TA Playlist with the Podcast. We tried something similar in our first month (see TA Playlist wrap-up afterparty) that was well received but ultimately was something we struggled to reliably continue. You'd also be involved in suggesting and choosing game and theme ideas for each month.

We want to make the TA Playlist the best it can be, along with having as much of the community playing together as possible!

If this is something you may like the idea of, send me (ManicMetalhead) a message with some details about yourself and some theme ideas for future TA Playlists, then Chewie and I will choose those who will be joining us!

The TA Playlist is a monthly community event. Everyone votes on which of four games to play, and then we all play through it in the following month. There's a dedicated hub to discuss everything about the game, from story beats to gameplay tips – and of course, you can track your achievement progress during the month as well. TA Playlist was created by Mark Delaney and is now run by Miles, Nici and Chewie.
