Welcome to March and our current month of Metroidvania madness, as you dash, hop, wall climb, and leap your way around the beautiful world of Ori and the Blind Forest, the current TA Playlist Game. As you spend the rest of the month helping Ori along in their quest or going for some of those tough playthroughs, it’s time to get your votes in for the April TA Playlist game. Our theme this month is Retro Revenge! Without further delay, here are April’s nominees… Doom (1993) [/img] Frequently referred to as both one of the most significant games in video game history and one of the greatest ever made, our first nomination of Doom (1993) truly is a classic. Originally developed and released way back in 1993 by id Software, a current version of the original game was released in 2019 via Bethesda Softworks. In case you’re unfamiliar, in Doom, you play as the Doomguy, an otherwise unnamed space marine sent to Mars as punishment for disobeying an order to shoot civilians. It turns out that this punishment is not all as it seems, and a secret teleportation experiment on the red planet goes wrong, releasing a huge number of demons directly from hell. Doomguy has to fight his way through a series of increasingly difficult levels and episodes in order to protect the planet and get out alive. Doom(1993) currently holds a respectable 4.30 rating out of 5.00 here on TA. Nearly 70,000 tracked TA users have started the game, with fewer than 450 gamers (around 1%) having earned the completion. The game’s 19 achievements are estimated to take around 10-12 hours to complete. Doom (1993) is currently available on Xbox Games Pass. We don’t have any stats for the myriad of other platforms it can be played on. Let us know if you’ve played Doom on an oscilloscope or smart thermostat! GoldenEye 007 [/img] The next nominee is GoldenEye 007. Originally developed by RARE and released back in 1997, it has been refreshed and brought to our screens once more by Code Mystics, releasing on Xbox Game Pass at the end of January 2023. GoldenEye 007 is based on the film of almost the same name, and you rather predictably play as 007 himself, James Bond. You must fight your way through numerous guards and complete an array of objectives in order to prevent a global criminal syndicate from launching the GoldenEye Sattelite. GoldenEye 007 currently sits at a rating of 4.19 out of 5.00 on TA, having been started by over 91,000 tracked gamers. Fewer than 2100 gamers have unlocked all 55 of the game’s achievements, thanks to some tricky difficulty achievements, but the completion is estimated to take 15-20 hours if you can overcome the challenge. GolodenEye 007 is still on Game Pass. Battletoads [/img] Our third retro nomination for the month is a remake rather than a remaster of a series that otherwise hadn’t been touched in over 25 years. Battletoads was developed by Dlala Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios. It was released on Xbox in June 2022. Trapped in a fantasy simulator bunker for 26 years, the Battletoads awaken to discover they are no longer intergalactic heroes and have fallen into obscurity in the modern day. In a bid to reclaim their glory, they set out to once again defeat their old longtime nemesis, the Dark Queen. However, all is not as it seems, and the beings who first trapped the Batteletoads in the simulator reveal themselves. Battletoads holds a 3.59/5.00 community rating on TA. Nearly 141,000 people have played it, and just under 400 (0%) have unlocked the 61 achievements required for full completion, which is estimated to take 15-20 hours. The game is also available on Xbox Game Pass. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge [/img] The final April retro nominee is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, developed by Tribute Games and published Dotemu. Being first released on Xbox back in June 2022. Inspired by and based on the 1987 TMNT animated series (and also featuring many of the voice actors from this series), you play as the turtles themselves, Master Splinter, or April O’Neil as they clash with Krang, Bebop & Rocksteady, Shredder, and members of the Foot Clan in locations from all over the world (and even in other dimensions) as they try and take over the world. TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is well-rated at 4.18 out of 5.00 stars according to the TA community, and it has a higher completion rate compared to the other nominations this month, with less than 3,100 of the 183,000 tracked gamers who’ve played this game (around 2%) going on to unlock all 30 of the game’s achievements, which is estimated to take around 15-20 hours. TMNT is available on Xbox Game Pass. Are there any games that you’ve not seen nominated that you think the community should play? We’re always open to suggestions for games or themes to be featured, so leave us a comment in the TA Playlist Game Suggestion Thread.
