Let me begin with a small disclaimer: Dark Souls is an unforgiving game. To truly get the most out of it, you will have to be prepared to die, learn and then die some more. However in doing so you will be rewarded with a truly incredible experience.

Dark Souls starts you off with a tutorial area which explains the basics of combat and exploration, however from then on you can expect to have to teach yourself. This presents a fairly steep difficulty curve in the beginning however once it clicks it will be second nature.

Time those strikes!

The combat system is fairly unique; twitch reflexes and button mashing will not work. Instead, you will have to use your surroundings and time your strikes. Dark Souls uses a stamina bar which works in the way that for every action it depletes stamina i.e swinging an axe or dodging.

In addition to this there is a magic system which features spells labeled as Miracles (Primarily Defensive/ healing), Sorcery (Offensive / buffs), and Pyromancy (Primal magics like poisons and fire). However I haven't delved far enough into this aspect to comment further on it.

This quickly recharges and so the combat revolves around watching your opponent and waiting for an opening to strike. There are numerous combat techniques such as jump attacks, kicks and counters.

Its a vast world out there...

The enemies in Dark Souls are very creative and range from grotesque to beautiful with very few re skins. However, this is not a game where you can autopilot straight to the boss. Each enemy hits hard and as such each encounter requires focus.

The game itself revolves around exploration, you are almost never herded into a specific direction so exploring the vast world is a treat in itself. For those worried about the size of the game, I am 40 hours in an only halfway through the main story not counting all the optional areas and bosses. Even once you beat the game it doesnt stop there! The game features a New Game+ mode to start again keeping your level and equipment while the enemies scale. As far as I can tell you can do as many NG+s as you want until the game becomes too difficult and with a max level that goes way over 200 you can really pour some hours into the game.

Creating the ideal warrior

Dark Souls also has a lot of RPG elements, such as levelling, classes and gear selection. The main currency are souls, which can be used to level up or purchase new equipment. The catch is if you die you will lose every soul and the only way to get them back is fighting back to your corpse to reclaim them. If you die again, they are lost forever. For some people this will be a very frustrating aspect though places emphasis on being careful and learning from each death.

There is an extensive crafting system which you can use to increase the power of your weapons and armour. This ends up being relatively complex in order to get certain effects on your weapons (especially rarer ones such as occult effects will probably require you to look it up)

Dark Souls also includes a faction system in their "Covenants" which is a fairly standard system in that when you stay faithful to your covenant, you can expect some nice rewards. However some of these covenants are very difficult to find without help, some being behind random hidden walls or hard to get to areas.

Learn from your mistakes

The game also employs a checkpoint system in the form of bonfires. Here you can regain health, level up and so on. If you die, you will be sent to the last bonfire you visited. This can act as a double edged sword however - as all enemies will respawn meaning the section has to be done in one go.

There is also a secondary currency called Humanity which plays a role both offline and online. Primarily it is used to restore you from a hollowed state (after dying) back to a human. While human, other players can invade you however you can summon help both human and NPC for bosses or just clearing a path.

Pulling the community together!

The online functions of the game can seem fairly limited; you cannot play with specific people as the game puts you into random games. This adds to the idea that From Software have disabled the party chat in Dark Souls to add to the vibe of loneliness in the game although for many people who enjoy playing with friends this will be a turn off.

In addition there are messages which allow players to write messages on the ground to help other players, warning them about dangers ahead or tricking them to get them killed. It adds a nice community feel to the game showing everyone pulling together to push forward. (However you do get the odd message that tries to trick you into jumping off a cliff)

Another source of information comes in the form of bloodstains. When you touch them you get to see a short clip of someone dying which gives an idea of what is about to happen and adds an nice layer of tension to the atmosphere.

In summary, for those who persevere Dark Souls is a truly amazing game with extremely fulfilling exploration with gameplay elements that go back to the oldschool.

+ Massive open world with plenty of side areas and optional bosses
+ Unique combat system which makes you think about every encounter
+ Extensive RPG elements
+ As many New Game+'s as you can handle with scaling difficulty
+ Intoxicating atmosphere

- Level of difficulty and lack of direction may confuse people
- No co-op with friends
- Covenants can be difficult to find

o YippeeKiYay oI couldn't agree more with this review. Even though the game lacks a story it is very addictive.
Posted by o YippeeKiYay o on 28 Oct 11 at 15:58
i really can not wait to get this ! i love the idea of being put together with random people and the way people can leave messages for others to read , it would be nice however if you had the choice of gaming with friends or being randomized , i think i would do a play through of both modes if they had the option just for teh fun of meeting new people and of course gaming with friends

But either way i look forward to this and skyrim very much !

Bardan Jusik"For those who persevere..." These words describe many people who are afraid to play Dark Souls because of its difficulty. I was among their ranks until two weeks ago. I had owned the game for some months, but I was worried that I wouldn't be able to complete it. Now that I've started and finished Dark Souls, I can honestly say that it has been one of the most enjoyable games I've ever had the pleasure to experience. For those of you who may be on the fence, do yourself a favour and pick it up.
P.S. Gamefly.com has had it on sale below $20 several times.

MFMegazeroxWhy, WHY are graphics a part of your review? I hate it when reviewers do that. If Dark Souls looked like it belonged on the N64 that shouldn't haven't any bearing on the game itself. If the graphics really matter to you, then to you all games made before 2009 would be considered crap. Ergo, you would not be a gamer.
Posted by MFMegazerox on 08 Jan 13 at 00:51
OldMateClownSome people do care about the visuals, that doesn't make them any more or less of a gamer, just means they know what they like. Just because you may play games regardless of their graphical capabilities doesn't make you an elitist gamer.

I've had painful headaches behind my right eye that I enjoyed more than Dark Souls, let me elaborate:

The minor problems, these are the errors and mistakes that although may not directly interfere with gameplay they do show very poor game design:

1. Shoddy environment construction, many times have I stopped to notice large gaps in walls and corners, trees etc suspended in the air (unintentionally), implausible buildings and environments making the gamer think that they just threw this game together on a weekend.
2. Character's arms, legs, weapons, shields and other extremities going through their bodies. This was a common problem in games 'back in 2004' but unforgiveable 2011, where parts of a player's and NPC's bodies go directly through other parts in some cases this happens blatantly on major characters, the Giant Blacksmith for example can clearly be seen with his right arm going straight through his leg, this indicates very sloppy game mechanics that destroy the believability of the gameworld.
3. The automatic pick item up feature. In good well-designed games you can find containers and dead bodies etc, look at whats on them, then choose whether to take them or not, not in Dark Souls, you HAVE to take them, and since there are hundreds of useless crap items you never want this adds repeated frustration to the game.
4. The inability to sell weapons, armour and all the other crap that you can't avoid picking up. Combined with problem 3 above this means that all the items you accumulate have almost no value, the only thing you can do is feed them to some stupid looking serpent thing later in the game and you get next to nothing for even the rarest and best items.
5. Lack of in game music. This may seem minor but the whole game has no background music, and without this the exploration and combat takes on a very dull atmosphere, as you explore and fight enemies there is only silence, the only time you hear music is during some of the Boss fights and even then it is extremely generic and boring.
6. Glitchy framerates. A known problem in Dark Souls and one that the developers have promised to fix in the sequel is the terrible shuddering lag type issue that occur in certain areas of the game, even whilst offline. Most predominantly in an area called Blighttown, this glitch causes the whole game to move very slowly and the brightness varies inexplicably sometimes to the point of total blackness. This adds a lot of frustration as you can be hit or killed by enemies that you can't see or who have teleported across the map suddenly.
7. Characters and enemies do not interact correctly. No enemies ever attack each other, even ones that obviously would in reality, also the damage that enemies deal out can only hurt the player, enemy arrows should not go through other enemies, the same for splash damage and fire damage etc, this makes no sense and really wastes an opportunity for some great tactics and gameplay. It also makes no sense that enemies do not attack other NPC characters that are no different from me, NPC characters stand in the midst of swarms of enemies and they completely ignore each other! It is also implausible that no enemies activate any of the traps in the game, even pressure plates while the player does. These are actually major faults especially in a game of this type.
8. Terribly boring and repetitive combat. Every enemy is fixed in a predetermined type, weapon and position throughout the entire game and never changes even in the slightest variation. In other action RPG's (and games in general) enemies are usually random, or move around a bit, or change position or type in some way, or in the least they change as you level up etc. In Dark Souls they never change or even move in any way and due to the repetitive nature of the game (see Major problem 5 below) you will be killing them over and over and over again until you are fucking sick to death of killing the same 50 enemies in the same location in the same way a thousand fucking times over.

The major problems, these are the real problems that directly influence the game and cause endless frustration and game breaking issues:

1. No pause, the open online nature of the game means that you can never pause the game. This means that in reality every time the phone rings, your controller dies or any other common real life interference requires attention you usually die and are forced to repeat the last 40 plus minutes of gameplay.
2. Enemies capable of shooting arrows and hitting weapons through solid walls or invisible walls that the player cannot. This causes untold annoyance throughout your entire experience in this game, line up a perfect shot with an arrow for it to then hit and stick into some invisible piece of shit in the air only to be hit through the same gap by the enemy. Taking cover behind thick solid stone or metal walls only to be hit straight through them by the enemy then if you try to hit back it just bounces off the wall.
3. Major lack of storyline, characters, plauseability, objectives and general directive. Dark Souls' story can be summed up like this: Go ring a bell, go ring another bell, go kill a guy, the end. Without DLC there only a pitiful 20 characters in the whole game, none of these characters ever physically move and they have less than 3 lines of dialogue, talk about a lack in-depth characters. There is never any real indication of where to go or what to do other than some random guy saying ring a bell, you have no interest in any part of the gameworld because of this, and no motivation to continue with the game.
4. Poorly designed control system and delayed button responses. For an Action RPG the control scheme is terrible, flicking the left stick to change an attack rarely works properly and there are known bugs causing the RB attack button to delay by about 2-3 seconds, during combat this equals yet another death and by no fault of the player. Also clicking the right thumbstick is 'supposed' to lock-on to an enemy, after many experiments I concluded this only works 65% of the time, resulting often in getting hit by arrows and stabbed in the back, again through no fault of the player.
5. The Bonfire! Here is a good idea: Lets put little save points infrequently around the world that when activated respawn every enemy in the game you've just spent 2 hours killing. The Bonfire is used as a kind of checkpoint so when you die you respawn at the last one you visited. The problem comes when you also use the Bonfire to level up, repair weapons and armour, and change attunement slots etc, so every time you wish to do these things you respawn the entire game's enemies, in a game where combat is boring and the enemies could not be more repetitive and predictable this design causes so much frustration you'll be pulling your teeth out with pliers.
6. The game camera. Remember an old Xbox game called Genma Onimusha? Probably not due to its camera system, both Genma and Dark Souls share this similar problem, because the camera will drift behind solid objects it means that your view of the enemy and yourself is sometimes completely blocked, this can result in injury and death on many occasions, adding further to the frustrating nature of this awful game.
7. Very poor online connectivity and unfair imbalanced online gameplay. Trying to get a friend into your game to play co-operatively requires you to become Human, however doing this allows the entire online community to invade your gameworld and kill you. Since everyone uses a trick to pass down massively superior equipment to lower level characters you wont stand a chance until you have at least completed the game once through and even then you will most likely be killed since all the enemies in your gameworld can still attack you but won't attack the invader. Also its ironic that every time you try to get a friend in or even a friendly random it fails to connect 90% of time yet random hostile invaders connect no problem.
8. The worst of all and the problem that had me wanting to kill myself, painfully, with a red hot needle, many many times is that of the 'CHEAP COMBAT'. Not only because of the controls being poorly designed, the button's delayed responses, the lock-on system only working when it wants to and all the other lag and glitch issues but mainly because of the way the enemy fights you. The enemies in this game have the cheapest moves in all the history of gaming. The lock-on system is so awful that sometimes when you're locked on to an enemy, and they move, it causes your character to follow them resulting in you getting stabbed in the back or shot off an arrow from a mile away. They jump around like fucking grasshoppers constantly, they can hit you through walls and you can't hit them back, they lure you into traps that they don't set off and into other groups of enemies, sometimes your weapon goes through them, sometimes after learning their move sets they don't do them anymore and start glitching and teleporting around. I swear I have played some God-awful games in my time but Dark Souls is by far the most annoying fucking garbage ever committed to a games console.

I rest my case

O Neill@above Please go spam your hate somewhere else or go play My Horse and Me 2 that wouldn't be as complected for you.
Posted by O Neill on 19 Feb 14 at 18:12
Complected? lol, its not spam its the truth and it needs to be said, all these reviews state rich lies by fanboys, Dark Souls is a very poorly made game and the problems I've listed above are all true and evident in playing that garbage.

The only people who enjoy this game are those who choose to ignore these game breaking issues, people who have not had the sense to enjoy any of the much better Action RPG's out there today.

iWantEllenPage+1 Deevius.

Dark Souls is the most boring game I have ever played, ever.

And Dark Souls is not difficult. The Dante's Inferno 2p trials are difficult. Sucking a bowling ball through a garden hose is difficult. Dark Souls is NOT.
Posted by iWantEllenPage on 02 Mar 14 at 00:13
I laugh at all the dipshits that say Dark souls requires any tactics or learning move-sets, laugh once you get a decent shield the game is beat. One the cheapest, dullest and most poorly crafted combat system in any game ever made.
Posted on 02 Mar 14 at 19:13
vSullyThanks for the laughs, Deevius. I've got hundreds of hours logged in this game and never experienced many of the issues you've complained about.

You're obviously a Bethesda fanboy. I though Fallout 3 was one of the worst games I've ever played. An absolute turd that I can say nothing positive about. I couldn't get into the Elder Scrolls titles, either.

You should seriously take your comments and make your own review rather than crapping all over the game in the comments.
Posted by vSully on 19 Jun 14 at 00:38
Thanks for the laughs, vSully, I've got thousands of hours clocked on Fallout 3 and New Vegas and found them an utter Game of the Year winning delight. And I've talked to dozens of other people and watched dozens of YouTube videos by people who experienced all of those issues and worse!

You're obviously a Namco Bandai fanboy. I KNOW Dark shits is THE worst game I've ever played. An utter fucking absolute piece of turd that I can say nothing remotely positive about.

You should take your bullshit opinions and make your own review rather than spamming horse shit fanboy crap in the comments.

CORDELLKILLEDUI agree with devious but for some reason im in love with this game it has many flaws but to me it has just as many draws

Damir MaliceI dunno why but i love this game <3
Posted by Damir Malice on 07 Aug 14 at 23:16
^ lol, that seems to be the case for everyone who loves it. But those who hate it have a truck load of valid reasons why they hate it with passion. My advice is 'try before you buy' - if you don't like this game after the first 30 minutes you never will, it doesn't change or grow in any way from then on.
Posted on 08 Aug 14 at 07:12
Damir MaliceI forgot to mention, i totally agree with the negative reasons you have stated above o DEEVIUS o.
But still it's one of my favourite RPG's. The game is kinda dark and mysterious. Like i said i don't know exactly why i like it that much. Must be an unkown origin like in F.E.A.R. xD
Posted by Damir Malice on 08 Aug 14 at 11:25
Its like Marmite in that way, but foul-smelling, dirty Marmite, way past its sell-by-date - and for an unknown reason beyond the cosmos loads of peeps love it! Like a new sewage flavoured beer coming out that everyone loves, so you try it and vomit your guts out! laugh Then think why?
Posted on 08 Aug 14 at 18:56
O NeillI think this game is just too much for your brain, maybe you should go play simple minded RPGs for the casual peeps like Skyrim or something.
Posted by O Neill on 08 Aug 14 at 19:42
Ebony ShabbaI love most rpgs mass effect elder scrolls fallouts even liked fable 2 ha. I love this game its up there with the best iv ever played if you dont like it thats up to you its not for everyone never seen floating trees but after 80+ hours of gameplay but. Theres no need to hate on people who do maybe you just dont get the concept of the game either way if you love it good for you if not to bad move on instead of throwing hate at those who do and remember praise the sun! headspinheadspin
Posted by Ebony Shabba on 24 Aug 14 at 17:06
O NeillI wouldn't really say its hate when the guy was calling people names and saying the game is outright shit in someones personal review.
Posted by O Neill on 24 Aug 14 at 19:02
This game gets shoved down everyone's throat like bad manure, and fanboy lying reviews like this paint a false picture of a 'sophisticated beautiful game that's so hard its just awesome' - when the real truth is that this piece of garbage is about as sophisticated as a lemon and as hard as a pudding. So I'll express my opinion here by stating very clear facts why this game is poorly designed, poorly constructed, riddled with glitches and poor mechanics and was the most boring waste of my time in all my gaming experiences.

And if you want to see floating trees that the developers couldn't be bothered to position correctly go to Darkroot Basin and look for yourself. Its a minor issue that I would normally overlook but coupled with all the other insurmountable bugs, glitched frame rates, broken controls, and sloppy environments things like this just add to the fact that this game was made by monkeys for a quick profit.
Posted on 24 Aug 14 at 19:59
Ebony ShabbaBut thats YOUR truth that its terrible not everyones the game is great love every moment of it while i agree with you about the framerate being bad in parts the controls are good aswell imo if its not your cup of tea thats fine but its not shit enough people love it and its sequel so it cant be that bad you must clearly hate it thats your opinion but your not gonna convince people who love it otherwise and id call it hate when a person is insulted with name calling just because they like the game lol
Posted by Ebony Shabba on 04 Sep 14 at 20:19
Ebony ShabbaPlus why 100% a game you clearly hate so much??? Must of been painfull.
Posted by Ebony Shabba on 04 Sep 14 at 20:22
And that's YOUR truth that its great not everyones. The real truth here is that I have listed undisputed reasons why this game is turd, valid facts that cannot be denied, glitches, poor quality, no story, shallow lore, and altogether shoddy development - but no one, no one has given me any valid reasons why they like it, no one, and the reason is b'cos they don't have any, people like this game simply because of how bad it is, happens sometimes.

(and I complete games, especially when they are as easy as Dark Souls, block/hit game beat).
Posted on 04 Sep 14 at 21:35
Damir MaliceDo you really need a reason to love a game? Anyway, i gave you two reasons. I don't like it because it's bad. Like i said, i love it cause it's dark, mysterious and not a casual RPG.
Posted by Damir Malice on 04 Sep 14 at 23:11
Ebony ShabbaHA its a great game i like it reason enough saying people like it cus its bad makes you out to be thick headed accept other people have different opinions to you and grow up mate
Posted by Ebony Shabba on 04 Sep 14 at 23:48
lol, yes I'm thick-headed, now whose been reduced to name calling? Only that is thick-headed bud. If you have no valuable contribution to this mate then don't bother commenting.

And of course you need a reason to enjoy a game, stating you love a game because it is 'dark and mysterious' is not a valid reason. You ignore the extreme poor quality, endless glitches, shoddy framerates, lack of any story, lack of lore, lack of imagination, repetitive gameplay, totally exploited and broken multiplayer, and the most boring combat
system of any RPG because its 'dark and mysterious'?

I can't debate with people who either do not know what they talking about or they are pulling my leg, because it is one of the two laugh
Posted on 05 Sep 14 at 14:01
Damir Malice*YAAAAAAAWNS*
@DEEVIUS
Look buddy, i'm an artist, i'm not simple minded and i don't need simple reasons like... good graphic, pvp system or a good gameplay, i love it because it's unique. If you still don't get it, you can explore the depths of my mind, if you don't wanna...well...then...i'm sorry for ya
Posted by Damir Malice on 06 Sep 14 at 18:06
No its not unique, there are plenty of other garbage titles out there just like it. You should try Turning Point or King Kong too an artist with your intellect will enjoy them all the same.
Posted on 07 Sep 14 at 15:27
Kovy88Hey Deevious why don't you just go blow up / save Megaton for the 6000th time, instead of crying like a little kid because some people like a game you don't. The fact that you come back here to argue with the fans of the game month after month is one of the most childish things I've ever seen on this website.
Posted by Kovy88 on 07 Sep 14 at 15:32
vSullyWell said, Kovy.
Posted by vSully on 07 Sep 14 at 16:18
I've never written anything that vaguely resembles crying bud, and I'm simply replying to questions and comments directed at me.

What I find infinitely fascinating is how the fans of this game repeatedly tell me to stop expressing my opinion about it, stating that my opinion is wrong because it is negative. Well my opinion is no less significant than anyone's who likes Dark Souls, some like this game, some don't and those who do not have equal right to express their opinions and state why this game blows so much.

The difference is that my opinion of this garbage game is backed up with a plethora of facts and reasons, but those who like this game have nothing to back them up other than "I like it 'cos its dark and mysterious" and "I like it b'cos its unique'. Neither responses even contend with the mountain of solid facts I originally listed above.

So you say 'I'm crying' and should not respond anymore in this review's comments, well I say that you're the one crying mate, crying to silence me and your comments are an utter waste of time, so its you who should stop being childish and if you're going to comment again next time try better.
Posted on 07 Sep 14 at 17:49
Damir MaliceThe fact you're suggesting me a crap like TP an KK lets me know that you have played them both. so, tell me now, how much better is your taste? wink
Posted by Damir Malice on 07 Sep 14 at 17:54
Damir MaliceOMG stranglehold was such a crap, but still, it was fun laugh
Posted by Damir Malice on 07 Sep 14 at 17:58
That's why I gave them half a star dumby, and you're the one who gave Clive Barkers Jericho and I Am Alive 4 stars mate and they suck worse! laugh
Posted on 07 Sep 14 at 17:59
Damir MaliceOh sorry i forgot, you're the gaming-prophet, you're speaking the truth toast
Posted by Damir Malice on 07 Sep 14 at 18:02
Yes, I am the 'Gaming-Prophet' roll
Posted on 07 Sep 14 at 18:05
Black Mesa...Not to feed this topic more than it has been, I just wanna say I agree with Deevius. I encountered more or less all the flaws stated above, and Dark Souls is one of the most boring pieces of shit I have ever had the mispleasure of playing.

I started Dark Souls 2 hoping it would have improved somehow, but no. I used to have EXTREME ocd when it came to completions, however I couldn't summon the fucks needed to complete it. That says ALOT.

And don't give me the 'too hard 4 u, go play avatar' bullshit. I've beaten games 10x as hard. No, this series is just so painfully boring it damn near triggered depression.

I agree whole heartedly with everything you said above Deevius.
Fuck this cancer of a game.
Posted by Black Mesa on 07 Sep 14 at 20:46
vSullySO either DEEVIUS is calling for reinforcements OR someone who hates this game just randomly happened to read the top review. Weird.

And another Bethesda fanboy, no less.

lol now we know where Kovy88 came from laugh probably your dummy account Sully, you are so naive if you think I actually I went out and found someone to support my comments.

No, the fact is that there are many out there who endured the same experience as me with this pathetic excuse for a game. Like me they have the right to express their opinions positive or negative and hopefully in doing so help to prevent others from falling into the same trap set by dipshit Dark Shits fanboys who urge people to join them in the long streak of turd that is this game's legacy.

O Neill^ well you most be pretty used to playing shit anyway judging by your games, you probably lost judgement of games a long time ago because your brain is full of shit games.

Black Mesa'Another Bethesda fanboy'?...Haha, what? I'm a Bethesda fanboy now? This is literally the first time I've been called this.
I haven't played any Bethesda games past the 100% completion. My god man, stop reaching for insults.

I have Bethesda games on my card because everyone does. Geez...

I already knew of this topic, I just felt there were too few taking Deevius's side. I have never said a word to him. Just wanted to show he's not the only one who hates this series.

Not gonna bother commenting any further on this, I made my point.
Posted by Black Mesa on 08 Sep 14 at 04:41
vSullyThis whole situation is a joke.

Deevius hates the game. He made his point by addressing the game, not the review. He continues to use this review as a forum for bashing the game and trying to convince others to feel the same way as him.

Then another random Dark Souls hater chimes in to agree with Deevius. And I'm supposed t o believe that he just happened to be reading the review and comments for a game he hates at the same time as this foolish debate has picked back up?

Whatever.

This isn't a forum or discussion board. It's a review. Comments are generally directed at the review, not at the game itself. I don't understand why Deevius hasn't written his own review other than the fact that he's just a troll. And I'm taking the bait.

"The real truth here is that I have listed undisputed reasons why this game is turd, valid facts that cannot be denied, glitches, poor quality, no story, shallow lore, and altogether shoddy development"

Many of your facts are actually just opinions. There's a big difference.

Let's start with your "major problems"

"1. No pause, the open online nature of the game means that you can never pause the game. This means that in reality every time the phone rings, your controller dies or any other common real life interference requires attention you usually die and are forced to repeat the last 40 plus minutes of gameplay."

Dark Souls is about immersion. If you have constant "real life" distractions that you need to pause the game for, then you shouldn't be playing to begin with. I've spent hundreds of hours with the game and never had a problem with not being able to pause. This complaint, which is your opinion, is a direct result of your personal gaming style/habits and growing to rely on the way other games work. And losing 40 minutes of gameplay is a bit of an exaggeration. After all- you can't pause the game for 35 minutes to go clean up dog shit in your living room.

"2. Taking cover behind thick solid stone or metal walls only to be hit straight through them by the enemy then if you try to hit back it just bounces off the wall."

I'll be honest- I never bothered using a bow and arrow so I can't comment on that aspect. But I cannot recall a situation where an enemy damaged me THROUGH a wall or obstacle. You make it sound like it's a constant issue.

"3. There is never any real indication of where to go or what to do other than some random guy saying ring a bell, you have no interest in any part of the gameworld because of this, and no motivation to continue with the game."

Disinterest due to a percieved lack of story or NPC depth/movement is just, like, your opinion, man. Dark Souls has a rich, deep lore but unlike most other games, it doesn't bludgeon you over the head with it. The lack of direction and objective is easily overcome if you take the time to explore fully. Some of us enjoy exploration without direction and discovery without guidance. I'm sorry that your casual gaming style relies on hand-holding and coddling. Be glad you're too young to have played games on the NES in the late 80s.

"4. Also clicking the right thumbstick is 'supposed' to lock-on to an enemy, after many experiments I concluded this only works 65% of the time, resulting often in getting hit by arrows and stabbed in the back, again through no fault of the player."

In your opinion, the control scheme is terrible. In my opinion, it's fantastic.

I've never experienced an RB attack delay. I've never had problems with locking onto an enemy. You're the only person I've ever heard these complaints from Perhaps your controller is at fault?

"5. The Bonfire! Here is a good idea: Lets put little save points infrequently around the world that when activated respawn every enemy in the game you've just spent 2 hours killing. The Bonfire is used as a kind of checkpoint so when you die you respawn at the last one you visited. The problem comes when you also use the Bonfire to level up, repair weapons and armour, and change attunement slots etc, so every time you wish to do these things you respawn the entire game's enemies, in a game where combat is boring and the enemies could not be more repetitive and predictable this design causes so much frustration you'll be pulling your teeth out with pliers."

More opinions. I like the bonfire system. And I don't find the combat to be boring at all- quite the opposite, actually. Can you tell me some games with a superior combat system? I'm genuinely interested in what you prefer in this regard.

"6. The game camera. Remember an old Xbox game called Genma Onimusha? Probably not due to its camera system, both Genma and Dark Souls share this similar problem, because the camera will drift behind solid objects it means that your view of the enemy and yourself is sometimes completely blocked, this can result in injury and death on many occasions, adding further to the frustrating nature of this awful game."

I'm sure that I've experienced a few occasions where I wished the camera angle was different. So few that I can't even recall specifically. I'm not trying to convince anyone that this game is perfect, but this is another extremely minor issue that I completely overlooked.

"7. Also its ironic that every time you try to get a friend in or even a friendly random it fails to connect 90% of time yet random hostile invaders connect no problem."

The game isn't designed with coordinated co-op in mind. It's possible, but it's not always easy. Tough shit.

The invasion system is not properly balanced and is one of my only complaints with this game. Again, I reiterate- this game is not perfect. No game is. I was invaded a handful of times at lower levels by someone who I had no chance to defeat. Griefers will use any advantage they can to ruin the fun of others. I look it at it as another unforgiving aspect of the game that I was able to get past because I found the game so enjoyable otherwise.

"8. I swear I have played some God-awful games in my time but Dark Souls is by far the most annoying fucking garbage ever committed to a games console."

I don't even know how to respond to this.

Seriously?

"They jump around like fucking grasshoppers constantly" ???

"They lure you into traps..."

I can think of a few pressure pad arrow traps in Sen's Fortress that are obvious. What other traps are you "constantly" being lured into? Why are you repeatedly taking the bait?

And as for some of your "minor problems"

The NPC vendors in this game don't buy anything. It's an intended mechanic of the game. If you don't want something in your inventory, then drop it or stick it in the bottomless box. Problem solved.

Generic and boring in-game music? Never mind that the soundtrack was composed by Matoi Sakuraba, a highly respected Japanese composer/musician and has received glowing praise. Deevius says that it's shit, though. Undeniable truth!

Glitchy framerates: an issue in Blighttown swamp, for sure. I don't recall experienceing a problem anythwre else. I believe this is console specific and not an issue on the PS3, but I'm not certain. Either way, while very noticeable in Blighttown, this issue was very minor and hardly affected gameplay.

In my opinion, Dark Souls is the best game on the 360. Hands down. Head and shoulders better than everything else.

I love almost everything about it, but no game is without flaws.

This review did a great job highlighting the things I enjoy about the game. I love the combat. I love the lack of direction. I love the necessity of exploration and discovery. I love the weapon system- how every weapon "feels like you'd expect, whether a small sword or a giant club. I love the challenge. I came to love dying. I love the feeling of overcoming after repeated failure. I love the world and areas. I love the lore. I love the fact that I don't have to constantly skip plot-based cutscenes to get back to what I found to be deep, rich, and engaging gameplay. I love the fact that there is no manual saving and that you can't just revert to a previous save if you dun goofed.

In the past few years, I've become an achoevement completionist. Dark SOuls is the only game I played after completion. For months. The game is that good.

You have every right to dislike it. But your "undeniable facts" are mostly laughable. And mostly opinion.
Posted by vSully on 08 Sep 14 at 12:29
Some interesting, albeit credulous, counter-points man, but that's what I like to see. You have an equal right as me to express your opinion and this is a good place to do it, where people look to find out the positives and negatives of a game they are considering. And I have no inclination to write a review for this cow-pat of a game.

While you have obviously taken a good look at my points and made some good arguments I stand by everything I have said. You are also confused about your statements regarding whether the points I made were facts or opinions, they are indeed facts; no story is a fact, the shuddering framerates are a fact, no pause is a fact, all of my points are indeed facts, however how they are interpreted can be opinion, I agree. For example when I see a game with no story you say 'well that's good because I don't like to be directed' etc. Well I look at that fact and say 'that is sheer laziness and that the developers, contrary to your belief, were just too sloppy to bother with a decent storyline because they are talentless'. So same fact but different way to look at it. Also if you think that this game has a decent lore then I'm sorry but you simply haven't played enough games that does a profound lore to know any different. The wiki's for this game can be covered in a few dozen pages, compared to thousands of articles for much superior games, not including as you often assume Bethesda games.

It also seems that you have been very very lucky in your experiences with this game not to encounter all the constant glitches and mistakes that other people like myself did. Either that or you were blinded by the 'brilliant mysterious nature' of the game to notice them. I did have enemies firing arrows and striking their weapons through walls repeatedly, I found graphical glitches EVERYWHERE, I found hundreds of elements in the environments tacked on improperly so walls didn't touch the ground and plants were suspended in the air, and while you may not consider this an issue it does however show a major lack of quality in the game overall. The developers of this game have obviously thrown it together in a week for a quick profit and all the dark mystery loving immature sheep lapped it up like sour milk.

You're also downplaying a lot of facts, facts like the crappy trap system where enemies do not have any gravity and do not set off traps that you do, this is an annoying and deeply implausible design flaw. I have played many games with far superior trap systems where you have the option to avoid and even utilize the traps against the enemies, not possible in Dark Souls since they couldn't be bothered to program in a realistic system. Again a fact with two different interpretations.

You are also under the assumption that I posted my original comment to try and convince people to hate this game, this is a naive assumption and totally misleading. I was so appalled by this turd of a game that I jotted down some of my observations and posted them in this review, my intention was help people who may fall, as I did, into the trap of Dark Souls. Since it's release up until the time I started it all I got from friends was; 'play Dark souls, play Dark Souls its great you'll love it!' - If I had of read something like what I posted I would have been more skeptical and perhaps tried a demo first or something, and I would have concluded within 30 minutes that the game was of incredibly low quality and I would not have been subjected to that crap. As I am a completionist and I do not like to give up on things I completed the game like I try to do with all other games, poor or not, and in doing so I encountered some of my worst experiences of my 30 years of gaming (yes I am older and wiser than you ignorantly assumed). I was so appalled I felt compelled to warn other people, and I have just as much right to openly state why I did not like the game as those do who like it.

iWantEllenPageI am a Bethesda fanboy. I completed the game WET and found it to be one of the best games I have ever played.

Now that I got that off my chest, Dark Souls is slow-paced and only appeals to gamers with mental deficiencies who cannot manage to do more than one thing at a time. There is no story because if there was, you couldn't focus on rolling in combat as much. That's how epic battles are meant to be fought. You just roll around and whack at your enemy once in awhile. Only the soundest of minds and the true die-hard warriors could possibly handle such a task. Do NOT try this at home.

Living LegendsDark souls is by far the best game I have played on the 360 and pc. I fell in love with the visuals, the open world, the detail into characters, bosses, scenery, buildings and the difficulty it brings to the table. I have only played the game when the patches were released for the game so any issues with the game when it came out wasn't present on the ps3. I love how the game starts out with simple controllers and then it evolves into a complex game. Never has learning from your mistakes been so great.

Deadpool 1194Great review. Your point about co-op got me thinking though, in all the time I've spent with this game I've not seen a problem with the co-op. I honestly felt like only being able to summon random players you couldn't talk to suited the game, now I find myself wondering what it would actually be like to play through the game with a friend. Having said that, dark souls is a challenging game, summons already make the bosses a joke for the most part, can't even imagine how easy it would be if you could talk to them and strategize too.
Posted by Deadpool 1194 on 25 Dec 14 at 04:10
The co-op is broken mate, if you haven't encountered any problems then you are very lucky. I spent hours and hours trying to get a friend into my game or me into his, but the connections are too poorly programmed. Not just me neither, thousands have complained about the crap connections in Dark Craps.
Posted on 25 Dec 14 at 10:28
vSully...maybe that's because intentional, planned co-op is not with the developers had in mind when they set up the summoning system?
Posted by vSully on 25 Dec 14 at 17:44
Ha ha I doubt they 'planned' anything in this pile of garbage mate laugh
Posted on 25 Dec 14 at 18:53
Deadpool 1194Deevius, I wouldn't say that it's broken. I honestly believe you aren't supposed to play this game with friends, however it is interesting to think about what that would be like and how it would change the feel of the game.
Wish you'd argue your points more reasonably though man, I do love Dark Souls, but don't take this as "fanboyism". You have raised some very valid points against the game in this thread, but you sort of sour your argument when you keep implying that everything you think is absolute fact and anyone who doesn't agree with you is an idiot.

Like the whole "no story is a fact" thing. I feel like the whole point of this game is you aren't the main character. you aren't there to save the world and drive the story along, you're just a lone guy struggling against the inevitable demise of the world, the story is incredibly rich and deep if you go to look for it. There are holes in the story, but these seem to be done in a way which makes you question what you thought was going on rather than sitting there thinking "that doesn't make any god damn sense". I could trawl on for hours about the lore of this game (and many many people have). I will concede that this game doesn't have a standard story, I myself missed a tonne the first time I played it, if you don't like the way it's told then fair enough I can accept that, but you can't claim it isn't there just because you didn't look for it.

Basically, I'm not trying to be a dick here, just saying its fun to discuss different points of view, but you can easily express an opinion and challenge the opinion of others in engaging debate without resorting to constant insults.
Posted by Deadpool 1194 on 26 Dec 14 at 05:36
It is broken, severely, evident by a complete disregard of sound game design and programming. Whether co-op with friends was intended or not, is irrelevant, the online element of this game is utter shambles! Piss-poor connectivity, massively exploited, poorly designed and fundamentally glitched.

Back at you:
"I wish you'd argued your points more credibly though man, I do hate Dark Souls, but don't take me as a 'Hater'. You have raised no valid points against the game in this thread, and you sort of sour your argument when you imply that I have stated anything other than facts, or my opinions based on facts"

I have stated very clearly all the multitude of reasons why this game is nothing more than a cheap, glitched, shallow, boring and mind numbing pile of steaming horse manure, see my original comment at the top.

I will however just address your last couple of weak points:

'No story' is a fact (see original comment) - the whole point of the game is to drive the three single boring events that occur along, and just like any other cliche you do enact the demise of the world. If you have felt the need to invent your own conception of a story to give some credibility to the utter lack of one in the game then that is great, however don't kid yourself or attempt to convince me that this constitutes a 'story' that the negligent developers of the game are responsible for.

As for the lore, I've seen the wiki pages for DS, and you must speak incredibly slowly if you need 'hours' to trawl through the lore of less than 30 characters, a few dozen completely implausible undead creatures and a few poorly designed environments mate. I could fit the entire of 'lore' (of which is very child-like and underdeveloped) of every Dark Souls wiki into one page of, for example, a good game with some actual lore in it, Elder Scrolls. And don't give me all that shit about Bethesda fanboys neither because there's nothing in it, much like Dark Soul's lore.

As for debating without insults; I will not concede there, if someone is a liar or too naive to understand something and then challenges me with utter crap then I'll call them anything they deserved to be called. I'm not being a dick neither, I feel anyone who deserves an insult should receive one and it gives me pleasure to do so. In turn, if I ever deserve an insult because of taking rubbish then give it to me, I can take anything I deserve, but you better have some evidence to back yourself up, or, like everyone else I have debated with in this thread, I will put you down and set you right, with credible facts. Thank you.

Posted by TheEpicPandemic on 26 Mar 15 at 11:13
ShninkielJust to get out of the "I love this game" train I think the game :

Looks like shit and plays like shit.

The game is bad (not hard just bad). I finished it since I got a cheevo for turning it on or something but I pay way too much for that game (got it free with games with gold and still I feel I've been f...ed).

On the flip side it reminds me of Stonekeep really good game but the only things that remind me of Stonekeep are graphics and inventory/menus. They are only a little worse that in that 1995 game.

If it was a PS 2 game I would love it - after King's Field: TAC I was looking for something like that (Kings Field still a lot better game) but Shadow of the Colossus
that I found instead was like 191820381290830 better (and still is today in both graphics and gameplay better than Dark Souls imo).

Poorly designed and easy to break combat mechanic is a one thing (yes it is hard at first but that is ONLY bacause of tutorial being a few sentences on the ground - it is an old school choice but the old school games came with a 100 pages manuals so...)
but recycled bosses are just plain lazy - I'm shocked that the last boss is not an asylum demon in yellow or pink.

It has it moments and the fact that I can see places I can go to as a scenery to where I'm now is awesome, locations are mostly great (layout not textures and the "instant kill by falling" traps took out from overall score) and I like pick Your souls or they are lost after death mechanism - but all in all:

Looks like shit and plays like shit.

Living LegendsO deevius o co-ops broken as your internet connection is as well. I have played enough times invading and helping on PC and 360 with little to no issue. I have helped people in Aus and Europe with bosses and weapons. PS3 has issues at times tho. Game does lack a story and lore but I found more fun fighting bosses as a level 1 after my completion of the game. Your opinion does not affect the feeling I received from this game. Your feelings are negative mine are positive. Played this series since Demons Souls as well.
Posted by Living Legends on 12 Aug 15 at 05:54
I agree with Deevius about the story(the same can be said about the other games too) and some of the glitches(if you haven't been hit through a wall with an arrow or spear, you're lying) but disagree with regards to the rest of the game. I enjoy it.

I think deevius is also referring to playing with his mates, not with random people. Connectivity with randoms is fine, but trying to connect with a friend is an absolute nightmare.

But the lack of a story couldn't be more true
