First things first: in order to mine Stalhrim deposits, you'll need a special pickaxe called the Ancient Nordic Pickaxe. The easiest way to get one: When you arrive in Raven Rock at the beginning of the DLC, speak to the blacksmith Glover Mallory and he'll give you a task to fetch one for him. Go to Raven Rock Mine, convince Crescius to give you the pickaxe, and then return it to the blacksmith. He'll let you keep it.

In order to learn the ability to craft using Stalhrim, make your way to the Skaal Village in the northeast part of Solstheim (the main story of Dragonborn will take you there at several points, and you may need to progress a bit in the main story in order to open up the needed sidequest). Talk to some of the residents and you'll learn that the town's blacksmith, Baldor Iron-Shaper, has been abducted. This will begin the A New Source of Stalhrim sidequest.

At the end of this multi-part sidequest, Baldor will teach you to craft with Stalhrim. If you need some of the material itself, it can be found in various locations around Solstheim, but you'll also receive a map at the end of the sidequest that points you to a location with a large amount of the material for mining.

Important note: Stalhrim is tied to Ebony in the game's smithing system, so in addition to the above you must also have the Ebony Smithing perk unlocked in the Smithing perk tree (requires 80 skill level in Smithing) in order to get this achievement. However, the DLC allows you to respec any of your previously-selected perks at the end of the main questline, so don't worry if you have a maxed-out character and haven't unlocked Ebony Smithing.

UPDATE: Some people have reported this achievement as missable. Whether it's a bug or not, here are some things you need to make sure you do so that you don't have to replay a lot of the DLC to get this one:
- When freeing the Skaal from Miraak's control at the Wind Stone, make sure none of them die, especially Fanari Strong-Voice and Deor Woodcutter.
- As soon as you reach the point in the DLC's main storyline where the Skaal are freely moving about their village (after The Fate of the Skaal quest), talk to Fanari Strong-Voice and she will give you a Miscellaneous task to find a bandit leader. Complete this task as soon as possible, before progressing further in the story.
- Return to Skaal Village and you'll soon overhear a conversation outside about the missing blacksmith (use the Back button to wait if necessary). Talk to Deor, and the quest to find Baldor will begin.
sarahoiThank you for mentioning ebony. I'm no level 78 and to unlock ebony I need 3 skill points. Wow... that was close :P

alanp9You can respec your perks at any time after you finish the main questline of Dragonborn, so you still would have been able to get it anyway. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, though. I have added a note about it in the solution.

Posted by Gunrunner318 on 05 Dec 12 at 13:22
alanp9Yeah, that seems to be happening for some people. I'm working on figuring out why. Did you talk to the village leader and do the Miscellaneous objective she gives you about bandits stealing food?
Posted by alanp9 on 05 Dec 12 at 13:25
Gunrunner318Yea and ive done all i know to do ive even mined that stahjim or whatever its called and bought a sword made of it and crafted it on the grindstone and still no achievement
Posted by Gunrunner318 on 05 Dec 12 at 15:32

Posted by Gunrunner318 on 05 Dec 12 at 15:54
totemman16yeah, I'm having the same problem where it won't unlock for me. I'm fairly certain I've finished all the other random side quests on the dlc as well except for that one.
Posted by totemman16 on 05 Dec 12 at 17:16
Gunrunner318Im fixing to try glover mallory tha one at raven rock not that im downing this guide but there is no mission of where that blacksmith was abducted
Posted by Gunrunner318 on 05 Dec 12 at 17:39
totemman16i might try deleting the dlc, redownloading it and going from a previous save. it may just be a bugged download.
Posted by totemman16 on 05 Dec 12 at 19:06
Gunrunner318Idk but it seems like everythings always bugged for skyrim dawnguard heartfire was and now this they need to make a update to fix all that

Hazey FiascoI have every other achievement except this one. Everytime I travel to the village the blacksmith is still there and yet to be abducted
Posted by Hazey Fiasco on 06 Dec 12 at 08:53
IVIr IVIeNsAIve rescued the blacksmith, got the stahlrim but all the dick will say is Terrible times every time I interact with him.
Posted by IVIr IVIeNsA on 06 Dec 12 at 14:34
SepherotheIf in the event you have the blacksmith get stuck say "Terrible times", I hadn't finished the last main quest "At the Summit of Apocrypha". Once I completed this quest and returned to Skaal it solved the problem.

Also, to respec just reenter the Black Book: Waking Dreams.

BensonTheSlonkySo I didnt bother with this until after the DLC's main quest. The smith doesn't need rescuing at all because he's still in the town. Any ideas on how to get around this without starting a whole new game?
Posted by BensonTheSlonky on 06 Dec 12 at 20:00
totemman16@Death, I did that same thing my first play through. I ended up having to make a save before embarking on the dlc itself and going back and doing it right after the mission "The Fate of the Skaal." Once I did that, I fast traveled back to Skaal and the quest was available. So in short... No, you need to start the dlc again :/ sorry.
Posted by totemman16 on 06 Dec 12 at 20:57
alanp9I have updated the solution with some steps that may prevent this being missable. Hope it helps.
Posted by alanp9 on 07 Dec 12 at 02:34
Gunrunner318@alanp9 tha new update works thanks for that and heres my confirmation it works
Posted by Gunrunner318 on 07 Dec 12 at 18:51

SweatBox HDDo Bethesda know about this glitch? Hopefully they can fix this in an update. managed to get the cheeve with another character save but was very annoying...

Brecks07I just got the quest, A New Source of Stalhrim, to trigger after I had already completed the main quest of the DLC. The same thing happened to me where the blacksmith was already in the village and not missing. However, after receiving and completing the miscellaneous objective to kill a bandit leader for Fanari Strong-Voice, I fast traveled back to Skaal Village and Fanari and Deor were outside having the conversation about the missing blacksmith which triggered the quest.

DusturmI wasn't able to get this quest on my main character but my old lvl 32 got it. I didn't even have to kill the bandits. After taking out the wind stone, I went back to Raven Rock to grab the pick axe. Went back to Skaal and overheard the two talk about the missing blacksmith. Got the quest right away. Time to level blacksmitthing to get the achievement.

Life Is A GraveI was excited- this was my last cheeve. I killed the elves in front of the cabin and none of them had the key. I was so ANGRY. I just cleaned up my extra saves and had to roll back to a gamesave from the beginning of Dawnguard since I had nothing recent. I'm keeping my main game and just using the old one to sprint through the entire Dragonborn story all over again until I get to the missing blacksmith quest for this cheeve. I put too much time into my main save and I can live without Stalhrim item crafting. I'll just buy the items.

Life Is A Grave==== UPDATE ===
Hahaha. So I was playing on that old save.Just As i just rescued the blacksmith, I decided to count the bodies. There were four. I was scratching my head and was wondering about my main game again so I decided to save and reload it. There were only 3 bodies. I scoured the area and was driving myself crazy trying to find the 4th.
Out of nowhere, I decided to backtrack. so I fast traveled to the "To Skyrim" arrow. I looked down saw an ash pile on the ship (on the Windhelm side). I remembered that I went back to my Solitude home to upgrade Seranas armor before I even thought about approaching the Abandoned
Lodge's door.
Apparently Serana raised one of the elves without me noticing. THE ONE WITH THE KEY. And it died when I fast traveled to the ship. You see- when you're a vampire, you tend to ignore the sizzling sounds of daytime fast travels after a while. What are the odds?

FYI: I thought I had this thing nailed as a bug - one confirmed on the Wiki- in which none of the elves had the key. I got lucky this time, and I hope this may prove useful to someone else. - If you're missing a dead body, and Serana is with you, try backtracking.

DarkSquall1And just an extra note: Improved Bonemold does not count for this achievement even though it requires stahlrim to make. You have to get the black smithing perk for ebony and make an actual stahlrim item

I completed this quest after the main DLC storyline without any issues. I wasn't even aware of the quest and I simply talked to people around Skaal and got lucky I guess.

EggBigotHad to go back on old save to get it to work. Hate I don't have the armor on main save. Hope they patch this!
Posted by EggBigot on 12 Dec 12 at 22:26
steveRPGmrHere's what I needed to do: Complete Cleansing the Stones and The Fate of the Skaal. Then, kill the bandit leader for the Skaal village leader. Then I progressed the main storyline until I had read a few Black Books and been to the Apocrypha realm. At that point, I happened to be in Raven Rock, and the bartender at the Retching Netch mentioned that Baldor, the Skaal blacksmith was missing when I asked him about "New Rumors". Upon fast travelling to Skall, Famari Strong Voice and Deor Woodcutter were having the conversation about Baldor missing.

Gewehr MagsIs there any other way to get anything Stalhrim? I already got the achievement from an old save but I really want this armor/weapons on my main save.
Posted by Gewehr Mags on 02 Jan 13 at 22:07
Shadow XBLI did not have to do any task to kill a bandit leader - when I went to Skaal to ask about the task close to the final battle, the task to talk to Dear popped up. After I finished the final battle I went back and talked to him and he told me about the blacksmith's location.

TheBlackxRangeri have a save from when i was level 9...
Posted by TheBlackxRanger on 10 May 13 at 07:51
With update 1.9 the Legendary ability allows you to reset any maxed skill tree, this allows you to redistribute perk points onto Smithing if you had previously capped at level 81.
Posted on 30 May 13 at 23:10
ChungJaiIn my playthrough I had killed the pirate leader right at the start before even meeting the Skaal so when I did finally speak to Fanari Strong Voice she never offered any side quest. Thankfully the quest for the missing blacksmith did pop after I fast travelled back to the Skaal village and found Fanari and Deor having a discussion outside.

I love Skyrim but I hate the fact that any accidental death of some minor character can screw up a complete strand of a major quest. It seems the only way to avoid such glitches is to read through a detailed walkthrough before even attempting the game.

LookItsPineapplHaving similar issues with the blacksmith never going missing. This is the last cheevo I need in this DLC and I've tried fast traveling back and forth, asking the bartender in the Necth about rumors, and doing other quests and coming back, still nothing. That being said Solstheim is riddled with bugs, I've had everything from annoying sound bugs to the floor disappearing from a room I walk into to Mirak fleeing the final fight and leaving me stuck on top of his tower. Hopefully they fix this all soon, I hate to think that I'll have to reinstall the DLC for one achievement...
Posted by LookItsPineappl on 02 Aug 13 at 17:24
LookItsPineapplUpdate: restarted it and followed the instructions to the letter, finished Fate of the Skall and she still wouldn't give me the quest, tried waiting for 24 hours and that didn't work. So I ran down to where the first set of pirates are where you get the quest with 4 tresure chests, killed them, fast traveled back to Skall Villiage, and finally they were talking in the streets about the quest. Maybe resetting the area with a new one was what it needed. Anywho, Thanks for the guide!
Posted by LookItsPineappl on 02 Aug 13 at 22:51
SliktorJust grabbed this. I never needed to do a quest for killing bandits (in fact, Fanari wouldn't even give me one). After finishing The Fate of the Skaal, I fast-traveled out of the village then immediately fast-traveled back and they were right in front of me talking about Baldor.

Moelhede42i was able to buy the ancient pickaxe from the blacksmith after i rescued him :)

KanchanaburiI didn't have any problems with this quest. Immediantly after I saved the villagers, I met the leader as stated in the edited part of this solution and started the quest to kill the bandits. I fast returned and I was standing in front of the conversation and quickly spoke to the woodcutter. No glitches found.
Posted by Kanchanaburi on 17 Sep 14 at 19:35
The glitches aren't guaranteed, just likely.

Stevo6483A note to anyone that's still playing this game and hasn't done this yet, once you gain the ability to craft Stalhrim you actually have to craft a new piece of equipment. I wondered if you'd be able to get the achievement by just improving a piece you find on your travels (such as the Deathbrand armour) but you can't.
Posted by Stevo6483 on 30 Sep 16 at 09:18
Mobius EvalonBaldor would just not disappear on me until I completed the quest "The Path of Knowledge." Once I fast traveled back to the Skaal Village afterward (as required by the following quest), Deor and Fanari were standing right there discussing Baldor's disappearance.
Posted by Mobius Evalon on 08 Jan 17 at 02:33
Pisboy SparxxFor me Fanari strong-voice is nowhere to be seen. What the hell can i do ?
Posted by Pisboy Sparxx on 26 Jan 17 at 22:06
MarekVitGot this finally. Had to uninstall the DLC, load up the game without it, save my game, then reinstall the DLC and play the DLC again (from beating the cultists, following the note to Solstheim etc.) I just followed the main quest and then got it first try.

Someone above compleained they found an older save that got them back to a very low level or something. I just replayed the part of DLC, keeping my 75+ level.

TheHighSaiyanHi, didn't read all the comments but due to all the update making building material will level up smithing pretty fast. Noticed when finishing the other DLC. Just an FYI smile
