He never gets me anything

With any achievement that has to do with not boarding anything on Halo 2 can be done easily using this method. Guess what? You still get to use the tank, or even the Gauss Warthog. Simply at the end of the mission before you finish it, SAVE AND QUIT, then resume. Finish the mission and you will obtain the achievement. My final checkpoint was in a warthog and I still obtained the achievement.

Slabba I confirm that this method works. I had used ghosts and warthogs during the mission, however my game froze right at the end of the mission just before the temple and I had to restart the Xbox and reload the game at the last checkpoint. I then completed the mission and the achievement popped unexpectedly.

The Dethdefyer @Slabba - The same thing happened to me. I got the achievement also so can confirm this method works.

JordanTheBigBoy Really would have been nice to know that you can't save and quit on Legendary. My friend and I were just about done with the mission, so we saved and quit, but after he pressed 'Resume,' it started us back from the very beginning of the mission.

We are dead inside.

Strategy One What? Maybe you can't on Co-op?

JordanTheBigBoy Maybe. I mean, it could totally just be that my friend is an idiot and messed it up, but either way we gotta replay the whole mission.

spxyu02 Great solution, knocked it out on my initial run, on legendary, through Halo 2. For the forgetful of the original, like myself, the level goes on for a good bit after you ditch the tank, so there are plenty of CPs later to Save/Quit on to activate this nice little glitch.

CarlosMaestre85 @JordanTheBigBoy - when playing coop, you will always start the mission over. If you had both entered solo, then it would start from the checkpoint

Big Ell 7 months later so you already know by now, but you can't save and wit in co-op.
