Update May 22nd 2016: It seems with each patch/update to the game the amount of credits/kills/experience needed in order to achieve each rank gets adjusted. The list I've provided below at the end was pulled from the Frontier forums while the game was still in its initial preview so it is inaccurate as of now. The requirements seem to increase with each update. I will search for more current requirements and adjust them in the future.

In order to get this achievement, you have to reach the maximum rank (Elite) in any of the 3 Pilots Federation career paths: Explorer, Trade, or Combat. You can check how far along you are and what your rank is in each of these by checking your ship panel (the right one - hold cn_X+cn_right) - on the left of the first tab of that panel (status tab) you'll see progress bars in each with your rank in text above it - explorer is cyan, trade is white, and combat is orange.

The easiest/fastest path to this achievement is in trading (white). Get a ship with a high cargo capacity and just keep choosing delivery, trade, or smuggling missions with high payouts off of the bulletin board and completing them. Smuggling missions net the most (in a Cobra Mk III the average high-payout smuggle mission a few systems away pays around 100,000CR). You can also buy/sell on the commodities market. Basically any sort of cargo-related activity where you gain money will count. Selling on the black market and mining profits will not count. Once you get around 1,015,000,000 credits (it varies depending on player) overall from trading you will reach elite. Exploration is the slowest/hardest path (since income is low and it takes months to gather scans/data), and combat depends on how skilled you are (also costs of maintenance are high).

If you would rather choose another path these are the requirements for each rank (pulled from the Frontier forums):

Explorer (by CR): scanning systems, selling universal cartographics data
SCOUT: 85,000
SURVEYOR: 300,000
TRAILBLAZER: 1,050,000
PATHFINDER: 2,500,000
RANGER: 9,000,000 ~ 11,500,000
PIONEER: 30,000,000
ELITE: 100,000,000

Trade (by CR): delivery, smuggling, commodities, piracy
PEDDLER: 100,000
DEALER: 750,000
MERCHANT: 3,800,000
BROKER: 33,779,000
ENTREPRENEUR: 134,000,000
TYCOON: 385,000,000 ~ 420,000,000
ELITE: 1,015,000,000

Combat (by CR / kills): termination missions, bounty hunting, conflict/combat zones, warrant scanning, piracy
MOSTLY HARMLESS: 152,167 ~ 250,000 / 15
NOVICE: 500,000 ~ 750,000 / 75
COMPETENT: 1,717,370 ~ 3,500,000 / 172 ~ 400
EXPERT: 5,022,829 ~ 8,000,000 / 450 ~ 750
MASTER: 11,437,575 / 1,100 ~ 1,253
DANGEROUS: 42,000,000 / 2,100 ~ 2,600 [4,335]
DEADLY: Unknown / 4,200
ELITE: Unknown / 8,600 ~ 8,750
branstoneboyI would say start off smuggling first because it nets you the highest reward even if you're 'Penniless' then cash in your rewards for a bigger ship, larger cargos and a better FSD to smuggle even more. By the time you're an Elite Trader you should have enough money to buy the perfect ship to explore and then the perfect ship/s to fight with.

Siwalker69158,000,000 for explorer elite over 300 hours or in other terms 4,416 systems visited/ 14,710 level 3 detailed scans. I reached pioneer at 58,000,000 as well.

N7 TiggerThis is way off. I turned in 42,000,000 credits in exploration data from just one trip and I'm still only Ranger.

planting42To my knowledge, they are upping the requirements each update. These numbers are from before the GPP.

xX DeadToyz XxI'm sitting at 18,652,200 CR profits from exploration, with 7009 level 3 detailed scans and am sitting at Ranger - 1%. So numbers definately off a little bit

RDSOh... that's why I was still stuck in Harmless, even although I cashed in a bounty of almost 300000CR

planting42~59 mil turned in and I'm 97% to PIONEER rank and 87.24 of the way to Elite.

Guessing 150mil for Explore Elite

planting42Here's the accurate #

58,000,000 = PIONEER = 87.48% to ELITE

ZiggaManThanks for posting this planting42. It will help while I'm compiling a new table. I have this on PC and play it more often on that platform, and no one knows the exact numbers there either. Frontier has admitted on the forums that they do indeed change requirements with each update and will never reveal the exact numbers for a few reasons - one of which is they don't want players to feel compelled to choose the "optimal" route to the ranks by ignoring all others. All we have to go by is posts on various forums and actual evidence like yours to compile estimations ourselves.

derechtegraf1I'm a bit confused with regards to the Explorer Elite requirements:

Got back fromantic a long trip in the black today and sold exploration data of ~57 million. Made me Pioneer and shows in-game as 2% towards Elite (i.e. the amount needed to progress from Pioneer to Elite).

Achievement counter says 87%, pretty much the same as Planting had. But if 57 million is 87%, 100% should be around 70 million - or is my math incorrect?
Frontier Forums and Wiki mention about 160 million as the post 1.6 value, but that wouldn't make sense at all keeping the 87% in mind.

Lurking LawyerI'm at Pioneer +6% and the site tracker for this achievement shows me at 88%, 7 out of 8. I assumed that the %ge was nothing more than a reflection that I've progressed 7 ranks and have one more to go, rather than being a %ge of the difference between 0% progress at Aimless and 100% at Elite.

If it was the latter, you'd only show up as being at around 40% by the time you reached Pioneer (assuming it takes 58M to get to Pioneer and 150-ishM to get to Elite).

FlutteryChickenPassenger missions seem to add to explorer ranking. Currently on Ranger(24%) with only 4.4 million.

KripesPassenger missions to visitor beacons do add to Explorer rank. I was running tourist missions and for every 2-3 million credits payout I was getting about 1% for Pioneer up to Elite.
I think transport aid workers/businessmen/etc add to Trade rank like cargo delivery missions.

Explorer has increased a lot; I was a Trailblazer when I returned from Sagittarius *A and handed in just over 93,000,000cr. According to my stats my profit from Exploration is 106,800,000cr and I just hit Pioneer.

Overdose83VWI become 187.580.000 credits with exploring now i'am pioneer 38%, 2.200.000 credits on pioneer level is 1%. On pioneer levvel you need 220.000.000 to get elite (only in pioneer)

Epsilon ThetaI cashed in roughly 100M at Colonia and got about 33% of my Pioneer rank done.

StarwiseEasiest path to this is mining - using find the most expensive minerals (void opals, painite, serendibite, benotoite, etc;) then mine them using either motherlode or laser mining. I did about 64t a night using motherlodes - with a good motherlode returning about 15t and about 4 asteroids a night before I got bored.
On the plus side this will also set you up with close to a billion credits that you can use to outfit expeditions, engineering, etc;

SashamorningI think bulk passenger missions help a lot toward trading. I took a break from trading to do some of those, and my rank went up. Just got Elite, show 916 million in trading profit after transporting over 1000 passengers. Two birds, one stone.
