Rocket League

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Rocket League walkthrough. I'm Eurydace and I'll be your guide. This walkthrough is comprehensive and will give you ideal strategies to approach playing this game to unlock the achievements in a timely manner. What type of achievements does this game have, you might ask? Well...

Overview

Total GS: 1,500
Difficulty to Complete: 2/10
Estimated Completion Time: 12-20 Hours
# Online Achievements: 3
# Controllers Required: 1
# Controllers Recommended: 2

I'll start by saying that this game is amazing with friends. It's easily among the best indie games. If you're here trying to decide if you should get the game, the answer is yes - the game is great and the achievements are easy.

All of the achievements but one can be solo-boosted. The other simply requires you to get in a party with a friend and complete an online match - a trivial task for most. There are shortcuts for just about everything in this game, making the completion extremely short if you want it to be. If you want to play the game normally, almost everything will come naturally so you could play carefree. But you're here for the quick and dirty guide, so that's what you'll get in this walkthrough.

With that said, let's get started.

Rocket League has no real story mode (ok...there's a Season mode, but we'll get to that). Essentially, the game is 5 minute matches of soccer using rocket cars. Regardless of how awesome that sounds to you, the game is even better than you'd imagine. It's great fun. Every game you complete nets you experience to level up and random unlocks. Speaking of the unlocks...

Many of the achievements in this game require unlocks. These unlocks, except for two of the car bodies, are entirely random. You could get everything you need to unlock achievements in 10 games or 200. This is what accounts for the large disparity in completion time. Even with bad luck though, you don't need to worry - there's a quick and easy way to get unlocks and you can still finish within about 12 hours.

So what is that method to get the unlocks? It's easy.

Setting Up Your Achievement Gametype

Hop in the game and select Exhibition. Set up a match with these settings:

  • Arena: [Your Choice!]
  • Team Size: 1v1
  • Bot Difficulty: No Bots
  • Mutators: Max Score - 1 Goal

Now start a game, hold cn_RT but do not boost, and you'll knock the ball into the goal. You win! Congrats! You'll get an unlock from this. Rinse and repeat until you have all the unlocks you need. Along the way, you'll net a few achievements. Feel free to separate this into multiple sessions of grinding by the way. There's plenty more to do in the meantime. I've created a video below to show you how it's done.

In your very first game, I recommend turn around and reversing the ball into the net. Doing so will get you an achievement:

Still A Show-Off

Score a goal while reversing

As I said, you can do this over time. There's plenty of other things to do along the way.

Practice Mode

Practice mode is where you'll sharpen your claws before going into a real match. There's training for beginners to advanced players. You don't need to do all of the training to complete the game, but you do need to complete the Practice Drills.

There are only three practice drills. Start up Striker on any difficulty and finish it. You do not need to be successful at all - simply complete it. You can even walk away and not play at all. You'll get an achievement for your first complete drill:

Season Mode

The main single player mode is Season Mode. There are a couple achievements related to this, and you'll need to set up your season properly in order to unlock them all in one season. Here are the settings you will want to pick:

  • Team Size: 1v1
  • Difficulty: Rookie
  • Season Length: 9 Weeks
  • Playoff Teams: 4 Teams

Of course, if you want you can change the settings as you choose. Just keep in mind you will want to win the season, so too hard a difficulty can see you failing to get all the achievements in one go.

You'll need to play against all the teams. This setup will cause every match to be against a different team and you will unlock the achievement upon completion of the season. There are more than nine teams, so you may play against different teams than your friend. That's ok! At the end of the regular season, you'll pop the achievement.

So let's get the season started. If you need tips scoring goals, Spilner has graciously provided some tips that can help you emerge victorious in Season play:

Spilner said:

Rookie difficulty should be easy enough to win every match anyway as with only one AI they are very stupid. The Ai being stupid means that most of the time you can hit the ball in from the kick off, the 3 times you're positioned almost straight onto the ball boost all the way until you're close to the ball and stop boosting, then keep driving to hit the ball over them and hopefully into the goal (boost too far and it'll hit the top) when you're on the side of the ball boost half way then stop boosting and try to hit the corner of your car on the side of the ball facing away from the goal, takes a bit of practice.

Here's a video he created:

You want to win most of your regular season games to ensure you win the entire season. After your first season win, you'll get an achievement. You do need to win the first game to get this, so if you lose for any reason just start a new season and try again:

Unlocking Cars

Unlocking cars is mainly done by completing games and getting the random unlocks. There are two cars with specific requirements:

  • Armadillo - This is the Gears of War car. You unlock it by winning the season championship. The strategy for that is discussed in the previous section.
  • HogSticker - This is the Halo Warthog. You need to win a game with every other car.

So there are three steps to getting all the cars. First, you'll need to unlock the random cars. There are 16 of these total (including the ones you start with). Once you have them all you'll be ready for the next step.

The second step is unlocking the Armadillo. If you've already done this, you're already ready for the next step.

The third step is winning a game with every car. You can use the default gametype we discussed at the beginning to do this (the one you probably used to grind all the cars with). Along the way, you'll net an achievement for playing a game with each Classic Battle-Car. For reference, the Class Battle-Cars are:

  • Octane
  • Scarab
  • Backfire
  • Zippy

Special Items

There are two types of unique items you can get while playing the game. You unlock these by playing regular online matches - you can't get them in custom matches like you can for other items. However, you can trade for them to unlock the achievements for obtaining them. So ask a friend if they can help!

First, there are painted items. These items are essentially just recolors of regular items. You can identify them as they will say "Painted" below the name. When you get one, you get an achievement.

3 guidesOnline Game Mode - These achievements require a connection to live services, such as Xbox Live, for playing an online game mode, for sharing content, accessing leaderboards, or validating data with a server.Cooperative - These achievements can be obtained by two or more players in a cooperative game mode who have met the achievement requirements.Versus - These achievements can be obtained by two or more players in a face off gamemode who have met the achievement requirements.Buggy - - These achievements may unlock after the requirements have been met or not at all.

Then there are certified items. Like painted items, you can identify these as they will say "Certified" on the item. Certified items have four levels (0, 1, 2 and 3). There are achievements for the first and third levels, as well as a glitch you can make use of so that you only need to earn the first level. So how do you level up?

In the Manage Inventory tab within the Garage, you can view your items. When you select a Certified item, you will see the name of the item and, on the next line, a phrase followed by the word Certified. The phrase indicates the level of your item.

Level 1 - Playmaker
Level 2 - Capable Victor
Level 3 - Veteran

Below that, you can see what the item requires to level up. You can check out this solution for a full list of the challenges and how many you must complete for each level. For our purposes, we're just going to Level 1. You must complete whatever the task is in online matches, so you'll need to use matchmaking.

You can boost this decently by using Asian servers. Search 1v1 with a friend at the same time and pay attention when it says you've entered a server. Communicate with the friend and make sure it's the same server. You'll only have a few moments to back out if it's not. Once you're in the game, you can easily boost together.

Once your item is level 1, you'll unlock an achievement.

Once you get that, there is a glitch to get the Level 3 achievement. Quit the game (dashboard, press cn_start, and quit). Then start it again. Open the achievement tracker and check the Certifiable achievement and it should be at 66%. Quit one more time and it should unlock. If for some reason it does not, you can try a few more times. Otherwise, you'll need to actually rank up to Level 3.

Snow Day

Snow Day is a special hockey variant. It plays a bit differently and can be a lot of fun. The achievements for it aren't hard at all generally, but they can be especially easy when boosted. Here's the gametype you're going to want to set up:

  • Game Mode: Snow Day
  • Team Size: 2v2

  • Mutator: Max Score - 1 Goal

And that's it!

Hoops

Hoops is a basketball variant. Here's the gametype to set up:

  • Game Mode: Hoops
  • Team Size: 1v1
  • Bot Difficulty: Rookie
  • Mutator: Max Score - 3 Goals, Game Length - 5 Minutes

As soon as you get in the game, you need to score twice in the first minute. This will ensure you get an achievement at the end of the game. If you miss it, it's ok. You will simply play another game with no bots after this. Scoring two in the first minute unlocks:

Once you think you're ready, you can start following this list to set up the special gametypes you'll need. Not all of these require items, but many do. We'll start easy and then move to the more complicated achievements.

Barras Bravas - This achievement requires you to play online with a friend. Just invite a friend to your party and play a game with them in any gametype. This is the core of the game, so play more than one just for fun! At least, that's what I did. There are reports this achievement is a bit buggy. If it doesn't unlock after your first game, both of you should restart your game and then try again.

  • DFH Stadium
  • Urban Central
  • Mannfield
  • Beckwith Park
  • Utopia Coliseum
  • Wasteland

You do not need to play on each of the different weather types. There are also reports that you do not need to play in Utopia Coliseum or Wasteland. Playing them all gets you the achievement:

Break Shot - The following achievement is much easier in split screen. If you don't have a second controller, you can grab a friend and do it in an online game. You need to hit an opponent into the ball to cause a score. You'll want to load up the default setup, but this time join with two players instead of one. At the start of the game, have your opponent drive in between you and the ball. When it's in position, drive forward and knock your opponent into the ball. If you lined it up correctly, your opponent will hit the ball and knock it in. Achievement unlocked. Spilner has a great video for this below if you want to see it in action.

Battle of Heroes - This achievement is easier with a co-op buddy. One player needs to use the Armadillo and the other needs to use the HogSticker. Load up the default gametype and win. You'll pop the achievement. Rinse and repeat for your friend if in a boosting session. If you want to do this in split screen you can - just be aware you'd have to grind out another season on a second account to unlock the Armadillo for it.

Minute to Win It - This achievement is the last that is easier in split screen. Set up the game as follows:

  • Arena: [Your Choice!]
  • Team Size: 1v1
  • Bot Difficulty: No Bots
  • Mutators: Max Score - Unlimited, Match Length - 5 Minutes

Have the other player score two goals at the beginning and then wait. Once you have about 30 seconds left, score two goals. This should put you into the lead. At the end of the match, the achievement will be yours.

Nice Hat and Helen's Pride and Speed Demon - You'll want to equip a topper for this one if you don't have one equipped already. You can do this in the garage. Then set up a game with the following settings:

  • Arena: [Your Choice!]
  • Team Size: 1v1
  • Bot Difficulty: No Bots
  • Mutators: Max Score - Unlimited, Match Length - 5 Minutes

Now you'll simply play the match and score six times. You'll get Nice Hat after 3 scores and Helen's Pride after 6. After that, you'll want to get max boost and then spend it 10 times during the match. The large orbs that spawn in the corners give you 100% boost immediately. Your strategy will be to grab one of those, get onto the wall and then boost until 0%. When you're out, go back down and pick another up. Rinse and repeat 10 times.

Hot Shot, Part Two - You need to obtain the MVP award while using a classic battle car. Octane is a good body choice. If that doesn't work, Scarab has worked for others as well. Set up a 2v2 game (or join an online one) with two players on each time. Bots are ok. Now get the MVP. Some say this will unlock in solo boosting - I could not get this to unlock doing that. I needed to have a teammate.

Survival of the Fittest - Go to the garage and equip the shark fin topper. The match should be setup as follows:

  • Arena: [Your Choice!]
  • Team Size: 1v2 (select Unfair first)
  • Bot Difficulty: Unfair
  • Mutators: Max Score - 1 Goal, Boost Amount - Unlimited, Boost Strength - 10X

The bots will be fairly difficult, but the matches will be short. At the start, boost forward and jump to deflect the initial shot. From there, simply do your best to get the score. You'll probably lose a few games, but with a bit of luck you'll eventually get the ball into the goal and pop your achievement.

Rider's Block - This is easiest with a second controller. You can set up the game below except with no bots. Instead, have your main account sit in the goal and let the second account continually shot balls forward, restarting the match after every save. Without a second controller, set up a gametype with the following settings:

  • Arena: [Your Choice!]
  • Team Size: 1v1
  • Bot Difficulty: Rookie
  • Mutators: Max Score - Unlimited, Match Timer - 5 Minutes, Ball Weight - Heavy

Now you'll want to not attempt to score. Instead, you will sit near the goal and block shots. The goal is to get 20 saves. The opponent will hit the ball toward the goal at the start. Knock it out of the way and then restart the match to repeat the process.

Sky High - You need to score an aerial goal. Please note, there's an achievement in the AquaDome title update that will require this, so look below to get two birds with one stone. Set up the following gametype.

  • Arena: [Your Choice!]
  • Team Size: 1v1
  • Bot Difficulty: No Bots
  • Mutators: Max Score - 1 Goal, Boost Amount - Unlimited, Gravity - Low

Now your goal is to get an Aerial Hit. You don't need to worry about hitting it into the goal. While the ball is in the air, simply jump or double jump and then boost into the ball. You need to be holding boost when you hit the ball. This is an Aerial Hit and you should see it pop up on your screen. Immediately drop back to the ground and do not touch the ball again. Press cn_start and switch teams. Then knock the ball into your own goal (so that whatever team scored the Aerial Hit gets the goal). If done properly, you'll get credit for an Aerial Goal and the achievement will pop.

GG - You must obtain the MVP award in a game that goes to overtime. Play a 2v2 game against Rookie bots and make sure the score remains tied so that the game goes into overtime. As well, ensure that you are the top scoring player on your team (score as in the points that you get for actions, not just goals alone). Once in overtime, maintain that score lead and you'll get the achievement win or lose.

Trifecta - You must score a goal, save a shot, and get an assist in a single game. You can track this in the match by pressing cn_LB. The easiest way to get this is simply by playing 2v2 no bots. Start with both players on one team and score. Then knock the ball toward the goal and have the second controller knock it in to get the assist. Finally, switch to the opposite team and sit on the edge of your goal. Have the other controller shoot the ball directly at you and you should get your save.

Sea Turtle - You must score a goal on your back in the AquaDome map. This is very simple - the solutions require second controllers and Rumble mode, but that's not necessary at all. Set up the following gametype:

  • Arena: AquaDome
  • Team Size: 1v1
  • Bot Difficulty: No Bots

At the start, hit the ball lightly and knock it near the goal. Drive in front so that it doesn't go in, and don't make it too close. Then drive back and go slowly toward the ball. Jump and use cn_LS to flip over backwards. If you're on target, you'll hit the ball in easily. Just make sure you don't hit cn_A to flip back over. See the video below if you're confused.

  • Arena: AquaDome
  • Team Size: 1v1
  • Bot Difficulty: No Bots
  • Mutators: Ball Size - Large, Boost Amount - Unlimited, Gravity - Low, Ball Bounciness - High.

Now your goal is to get an Aerial Hit. You don't need to worry about hitting it into the goal. While the ball is in the air, simply jump or double jump and then boost into the ball. Rocket Genocider - You must get 535 shots on goal. Phew. Just set up a 1v1 game with unlimited score and unlimited time and go to town. There are weird solutions to try to get more, but ultimately I don't think it saves much time. At most, you might want to turn on Mutators to make the ball very heavy and high gravity.

The main issue seems to be trackers getting stuck. You can fix this, potentially, in two different ways. First, you can try signing in with a different user while in-game and scoring a goal, then switching back. If this does not work, you can try deleting your save game through the Xbox One UI. This will cause you to lose your level and statistics (but not your items), so be careful.

Distance Achievements

These should be the final achievements you go for. They are achievements for going far, driving on the wall, and boosting. They are easy to boost, but the final one can be time-consuming, so it's best to save it for last. Set up the following default gametype:

  • Arena: [Your Choice!]
  • Team Size: 1v1
  • Bot Difficulty: No Bots
  • Mutators: Max Score - 1 Goal, Boost Amount - Unlimited, Boost Strength - 10X

At the start of the game, do not touch the ball. Instead, drive over to the wall and get on it. Now start driving while holding boost. This can take hours, but is by far the fastest way to do it.

Alternatively, you can get near a goal and use rubber bands and coins to hold the following inputs on your controller so that you can leave it AFK: cn_LSl, cn_B, and cn_RT. Make sure you have your controller plugged in so it will not disconnect.

You can check your achievement progress on this as you do it, but it will not update instantly, only periodically. It seems that ending the match and restarting it will force it to update. Either way, the achievement will unlock in-game when you meet the requirements (or it should, at least).

Here are the achievements you'll get doing this. Two you might already have, but the third will probably be your final achievement:

Turbocharger

Use your Rocket Boost for a total of 5 minutes
