Cel Damage HD

Hi readers, and welcome to the Walkthrough for one of my favorite games of the early 2000s, Cel Damage. ...or Finish Line Games' HD remake, that is. Cel Damage veterans will find this adaptation (mostly) familiar, so this WT is mostly for those new to the franchise. It's not a terribly difficult completion - especially when playing on easy - and most people should be able to finish it within 8 hours, if not much less. Took me about 5, but then again, I did spend most of 2002-03 playing the original game, so I have a leg up over most.

As I mentioned earlier, those who have played Cel Damage back in the day will find the HD remake mostly familiar. The biggest change is the switch to a health-meter-based system as opposed to the old "most weapons kill in one hit" system. ...Frankly, I preferred the old game in this regard. Being able to survive more than a few superficial hits has really slowed the game down - but this works in your favor, my fellow achievement hunters! As a side effect, this makes the game much easier once you've got the hang of it. Sudden, unexpected, deaths were part of the fun of the original Cel Damage but this achievement list would have been much trickier back in those days.

Another change is the addition of difficulty levels, including the ability to turn off the AI cars entirely. Doing so does disable achievements however, or this list would be so easy I probably wouldn't bother writing a Walkthrough for this game. You can play the entire game on Easy, which results in the other cars being practically hesitant to attack you. Playing on Easy I won nearly every match on the first try.

I put the Miscellaneous achievements here before the progression-based achievements because most of these are easy to pop as you progress through beating all the levels in the different modes. I recommend that you play Smack Attack for your first round, as it's a simple deathmatch that allows you to get a feel of the driving. You don't need to actually get kills to earn points - or "smacks" - you only need to damage other vehicles with weapon pickups. Getting kills is the best way to earn smacks though, so never pass up the chance to finish off a damaged opponent. Once you've selected a character and Smack Attack mode, select the Wild Wooly West arena to begin your first match.

First up, the front flip achievements. Do a front flip with a upward tap cn_RSu on the right stick. It's a bunny hop of sorts, so it can be done on flat or downward sloping ground and can be used to leap over obstacles as well. Be careful about doing front flips while going uphill (you won't complete the flip) or off of large jumps, as you'll do more than one flip and risk not landing cleanly. There's no penalty or damage from doing so, but you're vulnerable until your car rights itself and you get moving again. Perform 10 flips in your first round to earn your first achievement.

Next, the handy dodge. Press cn_LB or cn_RB to roll to either side. Useful for avoiding attacks and as a sharp cornering technique of sorts. If you're heading way to the left or right of where you want to be headed, a simple dodge can allow for abrupt changes. Perform 10 dodges - you don't need to actually dodge any attacks - and pop another achievement.

The final technique is arguably the most useful, at least in Smack Attack: the powerslide. Pick up some speed, let off the gas, then hit the brake while turning. If done correctly, your car will cartoonishly spin around. This enables you to attack players next to or behind you with weapons that otherwise couldn't. As an added bonus, you earn double smacks for attacks landed while you're mid-powerslide. When you pull this move off and do some damage, you'll earn another.

A win on Wild Wooly West will unlock the next Desert themed level, Death Valley. Select it and start up another round of Smack Attack.

There's an achievement that can only be earned in this arena you might as well take a shot or two at. Death Valley is a canyon that's open at one end. On the opposite side there's a large weight hanging over a narrow pass. The signs on either side will drop the weight if they are hit by a car or a weapon from the front. In order to earn this next achievement, you need to hit the target sign with one of your basic (unarmed) attacks and drop the weight on another player. It doesn't need to kill them - just land on them. I got this in my first round, but it may be trickier for new players who don't have the hang of the game yet. Feel free to postpone this achievement until you've got a bit more time and experience with the game.

With a win on Death Valley, you'll unlock one of my favorite arenas, Mesa Madness. After selecting your character and Smack Attack, go down to "Weapons" on the Event Settings menu. You should only have a few weapons unlocked, so click on each of them until the only blue tile is the one with the ! - Personal Weapons. If you win a round and only get Smacks from your Personal Weapon, it's worth an achievement.

As far as I can tell, you can hit enemies with your basic unarmed attack, but if you kill someone with it, you earn points and therefore violate the conditions of the achievement. Basically the game doesn't think that you've used your basic attack unless you get a kill because unlike other weapons, damage done with basic attacks isn't worth any smacks. I tried to pop this achievement earlier and even though I set the weapons to PWs only, other weapons still spawned. When I tried again later I had many more weapons unlocked and I didn't encounter the same problem.

After a win on Mesa Madness, let's work on unlocking the other arenas. Select Swamp Stomp (the first Jungle arena) and come in 1st place. Either continue on to the next Jungle level (Temple of Boom) or switch over to the Transylvania/Horror world and select Monster Mosh. Most people should have no trouble getting wins on Normal difficulty with a little practice, but feel free to set the difficulty to Easy if you want to grind out the wins with ease to get your achievements and other unlocks faster. The game is more fun when you have more maps and weapons unlocked after all.

At any rate, continue unlocking new arenas by getting wins on arenas as you unlock them. Feel free to try out different characters and find which one(s) you like most. There's no character-specific achievement or need to win each stage with a certain character. Once you've gotten a win on all 12 classic arenas in Smack Attack, you'll unlock a new arena that wasn't in the original game and an achievement.

By the time you've unlocked all the stages you'll have quite a few different weapons unlocked as well. Start up another round of Smack Attack with the character and arena of your choice, making sure all unlocked weapons are on. The goal here is to win the match while getting smack points from 10 different weapons. You don't need kills with 10 different weapons, just smacks. Your Personal Weapon counts but I don't believe your basic one does. This achievement isn't so bad as long as you don't get too many points with any one weapon and end the round too early. One option is to set the number of smacks needed to 1,000 - which should give you more than enough opportunity to damage other players with 10 different weapons.

With Smack Attack mode finished up, let's continue onto the other game types.

With Smack Attack finished, let's move on to the more complicated game modes. If you've been trying out different characters (or if you played the original Cel Damage) you probably have an idea as to which ones you like the most. Pick one character and stick with them for 12 wins across all the game modes for another achievement. You don't need to get the wins in order or without switching to another character, just 12 wins total will do.

Finale

Win 12 different matches with a single character

You can proceed onto Gate Relay or Flag Rally, although I recommend starting with Gate Relay - which is just a simple race mode. Make sure you don't bypass gates and you'll be fine, especially on Easy difficulty. As far as character choice is concerned, I recommend Fleming. Dominique Trix is also a decent choice, but Fleming's hovercraft is more manageable at high speeds. It also seems to have more wiggle room when it comes to landing front flips cleanly, a nice advantage in Gate Relay.

Speaking of front flips, they're basically the key to this mode. Do flips early and often so that you can maintain a steady supply of turbo boosts. And speaking of turbo boosts, there's an achievement for winning a round of Gate Relay while using 20 turbos throughout the race. Remember, you don't need to be going off a jump to do a front flip - as long as you're not driving uphill you should pull it off.

What I recommend is front-flipping down straightaways and saving your turbos for when you come out of corners. Boosting, then front-flipping out of the boost, will rocket you ahead and replace the turbo you just used. Try to save a turbo or two for when you get hung up on a gate and need to get some speed back. I say "when" because it will undoubtedly happen at an inconvenient moment during some races. At any rate, practice your flips and use your turbos to earn another achievement.

The other Gate Relay achievement is a bit trickier. You need to use your dodge move (performed with cn_LB/cn_RB) to roll over and flatten three different players. My first attempt I flattened Fowl Mouth twice and it only counted the one time. So keep track of who you flatten. It's possible to roll over two players at once, so if you can get alongside two adjacent foes, try rolling over both of them. You don't need to win the race but you won't pop the achievement until someone wins either. So don't expect it to pop right away.

Continue through the different arenas, making sure to get a win on each one. As long as you time your front flips and boosts appropriately you shouldn't have much trouble keeping ahead of the pack. I never played Gate Relay much on the original Cel Damage so I couldn't remember any of the routes. I don't like not knowing the course so I didn't skip the cinematic before each race that shows the path through each gate. Remember that this game is in a world of cartoon physics - you can make very tight turns by simply letting off the gas. Using the powerslide move in a turn is likely to do more harm than good so stay away from the brake. With a little practice you'll have the hang of racing in no time and get wins on the 12 arenas.

Just like in Smack Attack mode, you'll unlock the new boss stage, this time in Gate Relay mode. If you're in the mood for a long race look no further, but this arena doesn't need to be played in order to earn any achievements. Longtime Cel Damage fans might appreciate a new arena after all these years though. I think it's a little too big for only 7 players but the combination of themes is a fun idea.

Two modes down, let's tackle Flag Rally and get that completion!

Flag Rally is a bit like Capture the Flag, but with a few important differences. There are four flags that roam around the map, and they need to be taken to a certain part of the arena to earn points. Capturing one flag at a time yields just one point, but capturing two or three flags at once will earn you three or six points respectively. And if you manage to capture all four flags at the same time, that's worth ten points. Ten points is also the default/minimum score needed to win, so you can pull off quite the stunning win with a quadruple-capture. Usually what makes Flag Rally tricky is getting to the capture point. It's usually in one of the more out of the way sections of whatever arena you're playing on. Maps like Death Valley and Lunarchy can particularly difficult in Flag Rally because of the capture point location. If you refrain from skipping the pre-match cinematic you should be able to spot the capture location.

Although it may take a round or two on certain arenas to get used to the new game type, by this point you should at least have a passing familiarity with all the arenas. Now, onto the achievements. Unlike the other modes, there's only one gametype-specific achievement. You'll need to triple (or quadruple) capture at least twice in a round and win. Two triple captures are enough to win a standard 10-point match (6+6=12) but you can always set the point limit higher to give yourself more breathing room. I was able to get this achievement in my first Flag Rally match on the Babbling 5 arena. The capture point is on a ledge bordering the edge of the arena and there are teleporters that can be used to shake the other players. If you use the teleporter that's on the top of the skatepark-esque four sided ramp, it will spit you out of the teleporter on top of the ledge. Exit the teleporter carefully to avoid falling down, then drive around the perimeter until you spot the capture point. Bring three flags back two times and the achievement is yours as long as you finish in 1st place.

You certainly don't have to pop this in your first match, or even on Babbling 5. That's what worked for me, but play around on the different arenas until you find the one you're best at. Once you've found a stage you like it shouldn't be tough to get past the dimwitted Easy difficulty AI drivers.

Continue through Flag Rally mode, unlocking and winning on all 12 stages. You'll unlock the boss stage for Flag Rally, but once again you don't need to play a match on it for any achievements. If you're trying to pop achievements quickly, I recommend winning on the three Desert themed arenas as soon as you can unlock them. Once you've got a win on all three Desert maps in all three game modes, you'll unlock the boss character Whack Angus and his Personal Weapon, the Meat Cleavers. You'll also unlock an achievement:

Note that this achievement, like every other achievement (except Finale) can be done with whatever character or combination of characters you wish. That best said, the game tracks your wins on each stage by character. So for example, if I win on 11 of 12 arenas in Flag Rally with Fowl Mouth, I'll see a green checkmark next to each arena I've won on when I've selected Fowl Mouth. But if I switch to playing as, say, B. T. Bruno, I won't see any checkmarks - unless I've been winning matches using Bruno in Flag Rally. However, if I were to get a win on that 12th stage I hadn't yet won on, I'd still pop the achievement playing as B. T. Bruno. Doesn't matter who you play as, you just need a win on every stage.

There aren't achievements for it, but beating all three stages in all three modes will unlock the other boss characters and their weapons. Win on all the Jungle arenas to unlock T. Wrecks and his Shrink Ray, win on all Transylvania arenas to unlock Count Earl and his Homing Missles, and win on all Space arenas to unlock Brian the Brain and his Nuclear Waste. When you have wins on all 12 Flag Rally stages it's worth another achievement.
