The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt-Game of the Year Edition

Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

Welcome to the walkthrough for the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the third and final game in the series for Geralt of Rivia (at least for now). If you played the last installment of this series you'll have an idea of what to expect, this time around though it's a much bigger more open world available to you. This game is an RPG meant for a more mature audience; expect nudity, swearing, and gratuitous violence.

This walkthrough will demonstrate how to get all 78 achievements (52 in the main game) in 1 playthrough of the game, but a new game+ was added as free DLC and everything carries over except for your gwent cards. I started on Medium (Sword and Story) difficulty, but that was because I thought there were missable achievements for taking different paths like in the Witcher 2. It helped to get to know the map and also mop up most of the achievements that weren’t story-based. But you can definitely do this in one playthrough, so go on and set the death-march difficulty.

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is a fabulous game with rich, fascinating tales to be enjoyed. For this reason, there are times I will be vague in this walkthrough so that you may also enjoy the game as I did. That means you might encounter a few surprises here and there as you chase those achievements. The game also has choices that determine the final outcome of a quest and even the game. These choices will be left entirely to you, save for the choices that might affect an achievement.

Be patient and enjoy the game. It’s not a game you can rush through, and at times you might go days without hearing that satisfying ping of an achievement unlocked.

First of all, remember to make use of the signs.

Quen: (the shield) Get into the habit of using it regularly, it can only withstand a single hit but if you dodge out of the way you can use it again.

Aard: (telekinetic blast) Useful for knocking enemies down, that allows you to try an instant kill on smaller regular enemies; but this was not possible all the time. You'll also be using it to blow doors down a couple of times throughout the game.

Igni: (fire) Can set enemies on fire, ignite poison gas necessary in some locations and I found it most useful for making enemies drop their shields.

Axii: (mind control) You'll use this outside of combat to get extra options in dialogue and in combat once developed enough you can use it on an enemy to make them fight for you. They'll be able to kill other enemies in a single hit. The effect doesn't last long and sometimes the affected enemy will just stand there

Yrden: (magic trap) All I ever used this for was against a few of the wraith hunt quests. I never bothered with it for any other reason. Some wraiths would only be hittable inside the trap. It can also stop projectiles and slows enemies down but I never tried.

There are plenty of potions, oils and decoctions that you can make use of. The main potion you should be using is called swallow, which heals you. I didn't really use many others. A useful one to get though would be killer whale, which lets you stay under water for longer. Oils I used regularly on bigger enemies and groups. As for decoctions I never used them EVER never saw a point until I got to the final boss on new game+. In hindsight I was probably making it more difficult for myself. They do have a high toxicity though so take that into account. There are a number of missable achievements in the base game but there is a big window in which to get them but I'll go into this more once we approach them. As for direction of where to go for different quests the game does kind of take you by the hand showing you where to go.

GWENT

The in game card game has several achievements related to it but they are all easy enough to get once you start improving your deck. Personally I found the Northern deck preferable and I stuck to this throughout. In the latest update you can now get a book that shows your collection, what your missing and the area to get it.

Cumulative Achievements

There are some achievements you can rinse and repeat at certain locations, especially the ‘do this so many times’ achievements. Since the game is so huge and will take a lot of time, I found it easier just going for those in the course of the game. When you’re done with one, move on to the next. I highlight those achievements at the start of the walkthrough and I’ll keep reminding you of these during at the points when I unlocked them.

Contracts

Geralt can take on contracts alongside the main quests. These contracts usually mean killing a beast and you will be rewarded with XP and coin, and likely get decent rewards. There's also an achievement for clearing all of the contracts in each area. Keep an eye out for contracts on the notice boards that will appear as you explore the area. At the start of each section, I will list the contracts that are available. Often, you will find that your current level doesn't match to a contract, and you will need to come back when you've leveled up. But to maximise on your XP, don't let you level pass the recommended level by more than 5 levels, otherwise you'll get paltry XP!

Side Quests

TW3 is full of side quests that add to the fun of playing the game. Some are laughable, and others are deep, involving stories. Take on all quests you come along for more XP. I won't be listing them in this walkthrough, except for any that count towards an achievement.

Tutorial

Do the tutorial that will be initiated when you make your way the court in Kaer Morhen. It will help you get the basics, and you can actually get your first achievement here. Continue fighting with Vesemir after he teaches you the basics. Don’t sheathe your sword and opt for continue training. When Vesemir attacks, counter-attack (not parry), attack, throw a bomb and hit him with magic quickly in under 4 seconds. Best order is cn_LT, cn_X, cn_RB, cn_RT. Doing this will unlock What Was That?

Contracts

- Devil by The Well (3) - Notice board in White Orchard

After a couple of cut-scenes, you will be directed to an inn for more information on your hunt. You can now get your second achievement at this inn. After talking to the inn-keeper and you’re back in control of Geralt, you will be given the objective of interrogating the patrons at the inn. You will get talking to a scholar who will also teach you the rules of playing Gwent. Play him, and if you win, you will earn one of the missable cards in the deck, Zoltan Chivay. If you lost, just play the scholar again and you'll get your chance to win the card. But don't worry if you're still getting the hang of the game. You can still get the card later on in the game. However, if you do win the Zoltan card, go to your Gwent deck in the save menu (cn_back) and add Zoltan to your deck. Now go back and play the scholar again. Play all your cards if necessary, except for the Zoltan card which will likely leave the scholar without a card for the next round. Now play ONLY the Zoltan card and you should win the round. You will hence have won a round with only a neutral card and earn the achievement Geralt and Friends.

Soon after this, you can get another achievement. When you’re done talking to Gaunter O’Dimm, step outside.

Choose the option ‘One on 3’ and you’ll start a fist fight with one of them. Jump back immediately the fight starts to avoid getting hit. Dodge and counter his blows and use quick blows to knock him out without him hitting you. You should get the achievement Fist of the South Star here.

Not to worry if you don’t get it. Plenty of other opportunities. You can take the Twisted Firestarter side quest from the blacksmith and still get your chance. (Thanks to Little 3vil For that tip)

Before going to the Nilfgaardian camp, go to the notice board and take on all the contracts. One in particular you want to take is the Devil by the Well contract. This will work up to the Geralt: The Professional achievement and you can also use this to get Even Odds achievement. For Even Odds, you will need to kill 2 monsters without using potions, oils, signs, bombs or decotions. Go to the house and follow the objectives of the quest, before returning at noon. If this is your first serious fight, it can prove a bit tricky without using Yrden but it can be done on level 1. Stock up on your foods (maybe just bread and water at this level) to restore your health when needed, and dodge often. Get in a few attacks, then back away. You should eventually prevail.

Next go to Nilfgaardian camp and meet the base commander.

*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***
Go meet the hunter and help him with a simple task before he takes you to site. Follow clues to complete that bit of quest. Next go to herbalist. She’ll also give you simple task that requires herbs. You can collect the herbs around her place (or buy them from her). After that, she’ll direct you to place to get another herb for the quest. Go get the herb, get Vesemir at the inn and set up an ambush. Once again, use only your silver sword. You can also use the crossbow. Use the crossbow to bring down the griffin when it dives for you then, do heavy attack. Dodge and use quick attacks when it lunges for you. Save your heavy attacks for when Vesemir distracts the griffin. Do this until you kill of the griffin. If you didn’t use any potions, magic or bombs, ‘Even Odds’ achievement should pop.

Next you can go for the ‘Kaer Morhen Trained’ achievement. You get this by performing 10 counter attacks without getting damage. You need human enemies for this and you can get this easily when exploring White Orchard. I got mine on my way to the Missing in Action side quest. Just before you get to Dune Vildenvert’s home, there’s an undiscovered location (bandits camp) in some ruined buildings.

Climb up and prepare to fight 4 bandits. Make sure you leave a sword-wielding thug to do the counters with. I couldn’t counter the axe-wielding thug. Man, he had fun with me! Anyway, take care of the axe dude and the archer. Kill one of the other sword guys then do the counters with the remaining guy. Trick is to wait until his health flashes red, then press cn_LT. Counter 10 times in a row without getting hit, and achievement pops. Video here shows how to get it and my location, but you can do this any other place. Make sure to loot the camp. There’s a treat here in the Diagram for Viper Steel Sword, which also starts the Scavenger Hunt: Viper School Gear quest. Complete this quest to get the Viper Silver Sword diagram. Both are powerful swords and you should get the items for crafting them easily.

You definitely want to take on the side quests and explore the undiscovered locations for the XP and other goodies. Some of the undiscovered locations are Places of Power that give you power bonuses. You still want to find these power sources since they give an ability point, so you might as well get the Power Overwhelming achievement. This is for having all power bonuses active at the same time.

The first stop should be the nearby place of power. It's right next to where you found the dead griffin. Activating a Place of Power gives you a buff to a Sign and also an ability point on your first use. Here's the location:

Place of Power 1

Next, let's head to the deserter camp just to the southeast of the place of power (it's a question mark on the map above).

There's also another place of power to the east of the Abandoned Village. It's guarded by a sleeping level 6 bear, but if you're careful you can sneak up and get the power without needing to kill the bear.

Place of Power 2

The third place of power is in the northeast, just to the north of the battlefield we visited earlier with Dune and his dog. There's a ghoul nest right in front of it, but you can avoid the ghouls and safely get your ability point by running through them on your horse (you won't be able to loop around from the north).

Place of Power 3

Place of Power 3-1

The fourth is north of the Mill. There's a level 7 wraith here to fight. Luckily it's not too tough. Keep Quen up and be careful. The wraith will disappear and reappear behind you. When it does, dodge backwards once or twice. It will swing once and then spin. Once it spends, move in and get a few hits on it before backing up. Being careful makes this a piece of cake.

Image 1

The fifth is just a bit farther to the north. There's another nest here and this one can't be ignored. Kill the enemies and collect the power.

Place of Power 5

The sixth and final of White Orchard for good measure, is west of the Mill on the other side of the river. It too is guarded by a wraith. After your practice with the first, this one should be quick and painless.

When you’re good and ready, get back to the inn to continue the main story. Make sure you’ve completed all the quests taken or they’ll fail once you start talking to Vesemir. Talk to Vesemir, who will warn you that something is simmering with the locals in the inn. You can get The Butcher of Blaviken achievement here for killing 5 opponents in less than 10 seconds. I should mention that I had the Viper swords by this point. When the locals get attacking, use Igni to get them, then hack and slash them as they burn. Also use Aard and you might knock over one who you can kill instantly once on the ground. But you’ll soon get a chance to get this achievement, so don’t chase it too hard if you’re struggling.

You’ll end up at the Royal Palace in Vizima, where you’ll catch up with Yennifer, meet the emperor and finally get your next mission. You will get to move around the palace quite a bit as the story unfolds and I’d recommend you go round the whole palace looting and also reading as many of the books as you can. There are quite a number here, and if you’ve been collecting and reading books from White Orchard as well, you should have read enough to unlock Bookworm for reading 30 books and journals.

When you leave the palace, you’ll end up in Velen, at a place called Hanged Man’s Tree, for obvious reasons that you will see. By any chance, if you missed playing the scholar at White Orchard’s Inn or didn’t win the Zoltan gwent card from him, here’s your chance to get it. The poor bugger was hung, and you find the card beneath his hanging body. Just use your witcher senses and you’ll find it.

If you were also unable to get The Butcher of Blaviken achievement in the inn, here’s a good opportunity to get it and also Can’t Touch This. Just beyond Hanged Man’s Tree, there are five level 1 wild dogs. If you dodge well, don’t use Quen and kill all without taking any damage, the achievements should pop.

Check my video just to get an idea.

You can also use the wild dogs to get the Triple Threat achievement. Meditate and the wild dogs should respawn, though you can get this one at any time with any group of at least 3 enemies. Do side quests along your path to the main quest for XP and rewards. The main quest will be Hunting a witch, which is simple enough if you follow the marker. This will then progress to Wandering in the Dark. As you progress and get to the first place that you need to dive underwater to get across, be on the lookout underwater for some loot. There’s a diagram for Tracker’s trousers amongst other items. It’s useful armour in the early levels. Continue on with the quest until you complete it. After the quest, you’ll have the option to help Keira on a side quest, Magic Lamp. If you want to see Geralt get romantic with Keira, then accept to help her. Be prepared for a grind, cause she will make you work to get a piece of her! This particular side quest involves solving a riddle. It’s an easy one to solve. First ignite the statue on the right, then the left, then the far right and finally, the far left statue. That should unlock the door. Watch the video to get the sequence.

As mentioned earlier, to get at Keira’s goodies, you’ll have to work quite a bit. When you get out of the cave, Keira will ask you to drop by at her place in the secondary quest, An Invitation from Keira Metz. When you do, she’ll give you a side quest to do for her, A Towerful of Mice. Complete this side quest and she’ll yet again give you another task, A Favor for a Friend. After completing that quest, go to Keira’s hut and she’ll invite you to dinner. Make sure you accept. After a lot of chit-chat (make sure you keep up the flirting), Keira will finally reward you for all your hard work, and you'll also get the Friends With Benefits achievement. When you’re well rested, you’ll get another Keira side quest, For the Advancement of Learning. It’s a simple quest but be sure to pick these choices when you get talking to her; 'It's Suicide' and 'Go to Kaer Morhen'. This goes towards a missable achievement later on.

Armed and Dangerous is the achievement for unlocking and equipping a full set of Witcher gear. The first set you’ll be able to complete is the Griffin Set. I started the treasure hunt by getting the Griffin Silver Sword diagram in a tower in Hindhold (check image).

Hindhold - Griffin Silver SwordHindhold - Griffin Silver Sword
The diagram for the Griffin Steel Sword is at another lighthouse, at Lornruk (check map).
Lornruk - Griffin Steel SwordLornruk - Griffin Steel Sword
The entrance to get into the tower is somewhat hidden. Once you get to the tower, you’ll find that the drawbridge is up. Jump into the water at this point and swim to the right, where there’ll be a place of power. Now, if you swim around the place of power, an ‘Entrance’ marker will show up, and you’ll need to go underwater through the entrance. Once on the other side, collect the loot, then climb up some rocks in the cave. You’ll get to a room that has a ladder which will be your route into the tower. No need to climb to the top of the tower, though there’s good loot. Once you’re outside and can lower the draw-bridge, look for a ladder that will lead up to some ruins. In that area, you’ll get the diagram for the Griffin Steel Sword. Now head out to the next location for the quest, the grave. Once you get there, prepare to battle a number of wraiths inside the tomb. Eventually, you’ll fight with a vampire that’s ‘guarding’ the treasure. When you defeat it, there will be lots of loot including all the remaining diagrams for the Griffin Set. Now it’s just to get all the components and cash to craft the gear. I think the hardest to get were the monster parts for the gloves, but learnt you can get this from dismantling some monster parts in your inventory. Much easier than going out to harvest for them. So if you’re level 11 and have at least 757 gold, you’re good to craft and equip the gear, unlocking...

Naturally, you should be progressing with the main quests. Taking on the Family Matters quest from the Bloody Baron will also have you take on the Ladies of the Wood quest eventually. Just a note that you should play and beat the Bloody Baron during you initial interactions with him to unlock the Gwent Players of Velen quest to continue with completing your gwent deck. Not much to do here but complete the tasks tied to the quests. There’s one quest as you’re doing Ladies of the Wood; The Whispering Hillock. The Baron will also complete telling you the tale of Ciri which will lead to two Ciri quests; The Race and Out of the Shadows. There’s a point in Out of the Shadows that you’ll need to climb a tower. I spent about 30 mins jumping and trying to clamber non-existent ledges! You will simply need to jump down some ridge to ‘climb’ the tower. This video should save you some time. Anyway, don’t bother trying to climb the tower. Go off towards the right and climb the rocks near the tower. When you get to the top and get to the wall, climb down the rocks as though going to the bottom of the wall. That should get a cutscene started.

You can choose to help the Baron get his wife back in the quest Return to Crookback Bog, for a bit of XP and coin from the Baron. This is where your actions in the quest The Whispering Hillock will determine the Baron’s fate. While in Crow’s Perch, make sure you complete the horse races and the fist fights. You can get the races and fights started by picking the notice from the notice board. Be sure to also talk to Fergus Graem, the armorer's apprentice to get the side quest Master Armorers. She's the only one who will be able to craft you master armor when you get her the tools.

Also in Crow’s Perch, be sure to pick up the Shrieker Contract. It’s not a complicated contract to complete, but you can be better prepared by using Dracanoid Oil and Grapeshot Bombs. After defeating the Shrieker, take the trophy back to Chet in Crow’s Perch. You can choose not to take the reward and get 250xp, or take the cash and 235xp. Because of the time it takes to possess an enemy, do this from a distance and with slow moving enemies, like humans. After completing the Overkill achievement, you can go for Master Marksman achievement that's a bit grindy. You'll need to kill 50 humans and non-humans by killing them with a headshot. It helps to spend some ability points on Lightning Reflexes in Markmanship of the Combat tree and Trick Shot in the General tree can also help. You should also damage the enemy entirely with crossbow bolts before taking them down with the headshot. If they take damage from you signs or swords, even if you do kill them with a crossbow to the head, it seems not to count. Humans are the best for this, but it also works with other beasts. You can also use Axii to stun an enemy to make it easier getting the headshot kill. Now get 50 of these as you're carrying on with the quests and contracts and the Master Marksman achievement is yours.

Choose to help him, but just before you go on the quests, play Zoltan in a game of Gwent. Beat him and you’ll get a special card, Eithne. You also unlock other players you can play for rare cards in the Gwent: Old Pals quest. Continue on with the quest, and at the end you’ll have the choice to either take the gold or the cards. Naturally, if you’re going for the Collect em All achievement, keep the cards.

Next, you could be ready for the High Stakes quest with the set of cards you have now. Have 1,000 crowns in hand as well to enter the tournament. At the start, you will get chatty with Sasha who’ll give you a brief overview of some of the competitors. You’ll need to talk with them before the tournament begins. The tournament is a 3 round elimination before playing the final. In the first round, you’ll play the dwarf who shouldn’t be too hard to defeat. After the 1st round, Sasha will call you aside and give you another proposition. Accept and go in for the second round, which will be against Sasha. She’s tough playing as the Nilfgaardian faction and she’ll spam you with spy cards that will likely outnumber your cards. When you do defeat her, you’ll play the arrogant half-elf. He’s not too hard and you should be able to defeat him easily, which puts him in a foul mood and you get into a bout with him. After you defeat him, you will play against Tybalt in the final. He’s a decent opponent and uses Monsters deck, but you should manage. After you defeat him, Gwent Master will pop up.

It’s now time to be off to Skellige on the main quest aptly named Destination: Skellige. Hopefully by this time you’ve also completed the fist-fighting quests in Velen and Novigrad. Only one ship, Captain Wolverstone, will be willing to take you to Skellige for the hefty price of 1,000 crown! Pay up and make your voyage to Skellige.

*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***
Before you head off to your quest location, there will be the ship wreckage nearby. You can loot the bodies and you should get a ‘refund’ for your trip from one of them. There will also be an Axii Place of Power nearby, just same ways into the ocean near the ship wrecks. Also look for a monster nest nearby and be sure to destroy it. It will count towards an accumulative achievement. When you eventually make it to Kaer Tolde, you will unlock the notice board where you will unlock the last fist-fighting tournament. First you’ll take on Valgard, who’ll have a request from you before the match. You will obviously decline and proceed to pummel him to the ground! Next, you can fast-travel to Harviken and face Einar. For some reason, this location was available without me being in the location previously. Einar is tricky and fast, but once I cornered him, I had my way with him. You next challenger will be Grim in Arinbjorn. This one you’ll need to travel to since there weren’t any fast travel points nearby. Once you’re done with Grim, you’ll now have the opportunity to fight with Olaf, the Skellige Champion in Urialla Harbor. There should be a fast-travel point to the place. You should have 2 side quests unlocked by talking to Crache after Destination: Skellige and The King is dead-Long Live the King quests which will involve helping both his children. In the Possession quest, you will be helping Cerys trying to find the sword Aki to break a curse. Complete all the ‘mini-quests’ of the quest to help Cerys complete the quest. Next, take on The Lord of Undvik to help Crache’s son, Hjalmar. It’s quite a long and involving quest that will need you to sail all the way to Undvik. Once there, there will be many mini-quests that will take you all over the island solving mysteries and trying to find Hjalmar. At some point, you’ll get into a cave with trolls, making a ‘meal’ that can help you find Hjalmar. Choose to take a riddle and answer “Troll”. After the meal is released, activate the Master Armorers quest that you got earlier in at Crow's Perch from Fergus Graem, which should indicate the location of the tools nearby. Defeat the troll and collect the tools. You can now take the tools back to her and get some master-crafted armour from her. Now continue with the Lord of Undvik quest to its end. You will unlock the King’s Gambit quest, prompting you to go collect your reward from Crache. Of course, it will not be that straight-forward and there will be other sub-quests to finish. Geralt is now heading towards the climax of the story and it is a good idea to get your affairs in order. Finish your pending side quests now. We can also grind out some of those achievements that you didn’t get naturally in the gameplay, those this can also be done after finishing the game.

It’s always a good idea to occasionally check your contracts and see if you’re ready to take on them at your current level. One that I had left for later in Velen was the Mystery of the Byways Murders. The contract will get you to Byways village that’s been overrun by ghouls. Kill off the ghouls and interrogate the villagers, who won’t be that cooperative. Eventually, you’ll get the answer and you’ll end up in tunnels beneath the village, where you’ll fight an ekimmara vampire, Sarasti. It’s a tough fight, but Igni works well as well as Vampire Oil. There should be one cumulative achievement that you didn’t get in the course of the game: Humpty Dumpty for killing 10 enemies by knocking them off somewhere high with Aard. You might have been lucky to get this as you were playing, but it is hard to find good candidates to take the fall in normal game-play. You’ll likely have to grind this one out and the best place for this is at Devils Pit in Velen, just a bit Southeast of Hanged Man’s Tree. They’re bandits in the pit with many high platforms here and you can get the bandits up there and easily knock them off with Aard. There aren’t enough bandits to get this in one round though. Fast travel out of Velen, then get back to Devil’s Pit to find the thugs respawned. Rinse and repeat until Humpty Dumpty pops.

Chances are you've already gotten Environmentally Unfriendly for killing 50 opponents using the environment. The 'environment' is this case isn't very clear and much as this should be exploding swamp gas and barrels, Geralt's signs also count to the achievement. Knocking bandits from horses with Aard and killing them counts, as does using Aard on Harpies and Wyverns. Upgraded Quen with knock-back also seems to works as does stunning with Axii before an execution kill. If you haven't gotten this yet, you shouldn't have much to do and you can grind out the remaining kills in the swamps of Velen that are full of swamp gas and drowners. Equip Igni and draw the drowners towards the gas as you're fighting them. A blast of Igni should kill any drowners. You will eventually get your 50 kills unlocking Environmentally Unfriendly.

After leaving the Isle of Mist, you’ll be back at Kaer Morhen. The natural course of the events at Kaer Morhen will eventually have you at Bald Mountain, where there’ll be a couple of challenging fights. Ciri’s fight isn’t too challenging and I found best strategy for on one opponent at a time rather than take on all three at once. And move around a lot. I started with Brewess, then alternated between the remaining two witches. Avoid using Blink (teleporting power) when fighting all three. Somehow, one would always got a hit in. Geralt’s battle is tougher, so prepare for it. Load up on your decotion and potions (I recommend tawny oil, thunderbolt and swallow). The fight is manageable with dodging and quen until he loses 2 bars of health. Then he goes into hyper mode with quick attacks and teleports. Move and dodge all the attacks until his final hammer blow which gets his weapon stuck in the ground. You can only get in one attack then, so get in a power attack. Keep doing this till his death.

Time to head to Novigrad in the quest Final Preparations. There will be sub quests related to this quest which will involve Avallac’h, Ciri, Yennefer and Triss which are somewhat long. Ciri’s quest Payback is just that; payback to those who wronged and helped her while she was in Novigrad. It’s also dependent on your choices earlier in Novigrad with Whoreson Junior, whether he lived or died. But there’s nothing complicated about the quest.

The quest with Triss Blindingly Obvious will lead you to meet up with Dijkstra, who is having a bit of trouble with his ‘guest’. To make things a bit easier, go with the choice "I can help her" to avoid fighting the troll, and when you encounter the Fire Elemental, keep hitting it with Aard to stun it and douse its flames. Remember earlier in Novigrad you completed the quest ‘A Deadly Plot’; Well, now it’s time to execute it. When the topic of taking out Radovid comes up, choose the option to listen to Phillipa. She’ll offer herself as bait to draw Radovid. You will then get the secondary quest Reason of State at the end of Blindingly Obvious. Take up this quest before continuing with the main quest. Now you can finish off with Yen in the last of the Final Preparations quest, The Great Escape. There will be an optional quest to enlist Zoltan’s help. Getting Zoltan to help out will make things easier in the quest, so go and see him before setting off to meet Yen. Zoltan will help in getting the witch-hunters inebriated and you can avoid most fights since most will be too boozed to fight. Just stay out of their way and only fight the ones who attack you. The rest should be easy and you’ll be able to complete the quest, and soon after complete Final Preparations.

Now on to the main quest, Battle Preparations which will also have various parts like the Final Preparations quest. Veni Vidi Vigo is an easy one. Just follow the quest markers and should be easy to complete. The Sunstone quest depends on who sits on the throne of Skellige. Trusting you got the Kingmaker achievement, then you have to deal with Madman Lugos before being told where to find Ermion. If Svaringe is king, you will have to fight with Nilfgaardians before Ermion gives you the answers you seek. Choose to go see the bard, who’ll be whale watching. When he’s giving you the story on the elven ruins, the whale he seeks will appear. Either choice that appears won’t matter, but when he asks why you seek the ruins, tell him “it’s for an adventure book you’re working on”. If you go for the pearl diver, you’ll need to dive underwater into a cave entrance near his boat. You’ll find him and his mate inside and you’ll get the info you need from them. On returning on news of the sunstone, Ciri and Yen will head off on another quest that you’re to join them on, Child of the Elder Blood. You may also continue on with the Sunstone quest with Philippa. Get to her location by boat and explore the ruins with her. A few fights here and there as you follow Philippa and you’ll get to a room with a puzzle of mirrors that you’ll need to shift. You’ll just need to shift each of the 3 mirrors once and that will do the trick. Now with the Sunstone, all to do is get out of the ruins...which was bit harder than I thought. They’re a few ghosts on your way out which proved to be a bit of a pain to deal with! After making you way out, you can make your way to Yennifer and Ciri to complete the Child of the Elder Blood quest. This one isn’t too bad either. Just carry on with the quest to the end. Just note that there will be a couple of critical choices with Ciri in the quest that will affect the end of the game.

*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***

Nothing more, but to complete the game. And just the small matter of killing the King of the Wild Hunt. But you’ll have a bit of a warm-up first by battling Caranthir. The first part of this fight is manageable. The second phase isn’t too bad either. Just keep your quen up and roll toward Caranthir when he uses the ice blasts. Things get tricky when he summons ice elementals. Luckily, you can let Caranthir do most of the damage since his ice blasts will also harm them. Don’t focus too much on the elementals since he’ll keep summoning them. Avoid them and dodge your way towards Caranthir to get your hits in. Also make use of Igni to get rid of his ice shield and get more damage done.

Now for Eredin. But first you’ll need to make your way to him. There’ll be mini-skirmishes on your way to Eredin’s location that you can just ignore and follow the markers. The fight with Eredin is a bit grindy. Nothing special, but dodging, rolling, get 1-2 hits in, then move away and Quen. This fight also has multi-phases, but the strategy is more-or-less the same. Use Igni just as you did with Caranthir to get his ice shield down. With patience, you should beat him in no time unlocking...

The merchant will explain that the diagrams are part of a set stolen from him, and you will need to collect any you don't have to complete the set. Before setting off in the treasure hunt, look at his wares and buy the Decorated Saber (2,500), Ofieri Saddlebags (233) and the Ofieri Blinders (233). Also, talk some more to the merchant and talk about his horse, that will lead to a horse race. Win the race to get an Ofieri Saddle. Once you have all the diagrams, the merchant will translate them and you can collect after 24 hours. Return/meditate after 24 hours and collect your translated diagrams. Take these to Yoanna, the armourer in Crow's Perch, and once crafted the achievement is yours.

Now proceed with the main quests of the game. You may tackle Olgierd's tasks in any order, but let's start with Open Sesame. When you get into the auction house, offer to speak to the guests. The art expert will give you a test, and choosing 'The Portrait of the Merchant' painting will get you a piece of advice from him. When you’re asked what the advice was by your companion, do not share, otherwise you’ll pay about 3 times the price at the auction. Now, when you are given the option to take part in the auction, answer that you will. Buy all the items that come under the hammer. They’re only three and it should cost you 670 crowns. After you get the third item, you will have this achievement.

Once you conclude Open Sesame, take on the Dead Man's Party quest. You will find yourself eventually at a wedding party, where you will need to take part in the activities at the party. Once you have done 3 of them, our friend Master Mirror will appear and ask to speak to you. DON"T speak to him yet. Make sure you complete all the activities at the wedding first. These are the activities (Thanks Desosav for this list)

1 - Pig Herding
2 - Talk to old woman by tree
3 - Lake swim
4 - Gwent with halflings (you don't have to win)
5 - Find fire eater
6 - Drink with women outside
7 - Talk to young woman between buildings
8 - Climb ladder to barn and talk to Shani (might be confusing because the activity icon overlaps the quest icon on the map. You have to climb the ladder outside the barn for the activity)
9 - Drink with dwarfs inside
10 - Dance

Though this won't officially count as an activity, choose to make a speech at 'The Capping' in the barn after dancing with Shani. This achievement seems to glitch for those who did the activities but didn't make the speech. It's a good speech anyway! Now you can go speak to Gaunter O'Dimm and complete the quest to unlock...

You can continue on with the partying together with Shani, which will inevitably lead to a romantic encounter if you play you cards right. After the party, find Olgierd for his final request in the Scenes From a Marriage quest. At some point in the quest, you will need to step into a painting to reconstruct memories. Once you get into the Painted World, immediately in front of you will be a gazebo in the courtyard. This memory is not part of the quest and is MISSABLE, so start with it. It will involve placing the paint palette on the table and the book in Olgierd’s hand. After that do all the tasks until the last memory. After the cut-scene from last memory with the bowls, you will unlock...

You will then need to go on and face Iris’ greatest fear in the next room, and you’d best prepare for this. You will fight six phantoms which you can fight one at a time. But you need to fight them ALL at the same time to get the achievement. Usually, the other phantoms are in a dormant state unless you attack them. So attack them all until they are all active, then fight them. You can go up to them and attack them or hit them with bombs. This is a damn difficult fight. Always have your Quen shield up and move around all the time. Get your hits in when you can, but you shouldn’t go all kamikaze. This guys will finish you before your finger has left cn_RT to get that Quen up! Just before you completely exhaust the phantom’s health, a cut-scene will kick in and soon after, you unlock...

You can now head for the final showdown at the Temple of Lilvani. If you met with Professor Shakeslock, you will have the option to either save Olgierd or not do anything. You may choose to help Olgierd or not. There’re good rewards if you take on O’Dimm at the end and this is the easiest ending of all. But, you can be a sport and help Olgierd out. He also gifts you an amazing sword! Helping Olgierd involves solving a riddle of sorts and you will be taken into Olgierd's world to solve the riddle.

Either way, they will tell you of a beast that needs to be taken care of in Toussaint and you will travel there. Just before setting out, equip Lightning Reflexes in your character tree if you've already unlocked it. It's not necessary, but will be useful for an upcoming achievement. Now immediately you get there, you will get into a battle with a giant called Golyat. But just before Geralt fights the beast, the achievement The Witcher's Gone South should pop.

What a start to Blood and Wine, right? You already have 2 achievements and the game has barely started. Anyway, as the story unfolds, the main quest will have you at the Cockatrice Inn. After the cutscene, go to the notice board outside and pick up on the available jobs. You should pick the ‘Wine Wars’ note that will get the Wine Wars: Belgaard side quest. We’ll get back to this a little later. While still at the Cockatrice Inn, be sure to play the innkeeper in a game of gwent to win a unique Skellige deck card. This will also trigger the side quest Gwent: Never Fear Skellige’s Here. You will have to complete your Skellige deck of 43 cards to complete the quest. Luckily, the location of all cards is marked on the map. You will also be able to win 24 cards in one go when you go for the base deck by talking to Count Monnier about the gwent tournament. He will give you a history of the Skellige deck, then invite you to take part in a tournament with only a Skellige deck. DECLINE to take part in the tournament. Follow the main quest objectives and after an adventure, you will find yourself in an arena fighting a Shaelmaar. I died quick in this fight a couple of times before I got the hang of it. You need to attack it when it has it’s underbelly exposed. This happens when the beast hits the wall during its 'death roll'. Hitting it with Aard will get its attention and it will do the death roll. Just roll out of the way, and attack it when it knocks the wall and rolls over. At the end of the fight, you’ll have a choice to either kill it or spare it. Spare the Shaelmaar! This is part of an achievement.

A few cutscenes later and you’ll be taking part in a treasure hunt. You’ll need to get a unicorn and a golden fish. To get the unicorn, have some treats for the horse in hand. Treat that works is a basket of carrots. There should be some handily available nearby with the picnicking families. Golden fish is easy to find with your witcher senses once you’re in the water. Meet up with the duchess and you’ll have to answer a riddle. The answer is ‘greenhouse, but any answer will progress the cutscene and complete the quest.

Follow the quest leads that will eventually get you to Professor Moreau’s lab where you’ll be able to advance Geralt’s mutations. A couple of side quests opened up after defeating the Shaelmaar in the arena; No Place Like Home and The Warble of a Smitten Knight. No Place Like Home will lead you to Geralt’s newly acquired crib with a vineyard, Corvo Bianco. Talk to the Majordomo and allow him to give you a tour of the place. After the tour, you will have the option of upgrading Corvo Bianco to its former glory. You will need 14,000 crowns for this. First do a general house upgrade for 5,000, then acquire the grindstone and armourer’s table for 1,000 each. Geralt will have to wait 3 days (or meditate) before adding the final touches. Now do all the other upgrades; better bed, weapon rack, armour stands and improve the guest room all for 3,000. Then move on to the grounds; roomier stable for roach and herbs in the garden all for 4,000. After 2 days (you can meditate), when the last of the upgrades complete, the achievement Playing House should pop.

The other quest The Warble of a Smitten Knight involves helping the knight you helped in battle with the Shaelmaar, Guillaume and his quest to win his love’s hand, Vivienne. You will need to take part in the Knight Tourney and win all the events. There are four events you have to win. Shooting range is easy and Geralt will need to shoot all the red targets before his competitor shoots shoots his blue ones. Next event is a horse race against the clock. Striking dummies and hit targets with your cross-bow will add to your time. Having the quick-reflexes ability helps with the crossbow shots. After this, there will be a cutscene where you will be challenged depending on who you choose to be in the tourney. If you’re Geralt of Rivia, you’ll have a mounted duel with the Prince of Rivia, otherwise you will fight Count Tailles and a couple of his thugs. Seems this doesn’t count towards winning the tourney though. After this, you will be diverted from the tourney for a bit and will need to follow and find Vivienne. After a few cutscenes with Vivienne and Guillaume, you will have the option to either withdraw from the contest or finish it. You will need to finish the tourney. The next contest will be a 5v5 team battle and it is the trickiest, especially on the higher difficulties. The idea is to eliminate the members of the opposing team. You more or less have to be the last man standing and you might find yourself facing 5 opponents if your team is wiped out! Win this battle, and you will face the tournament champion in a duel. It’s a simple fight, and you need but roll and dodge his attacks. Defeat him and you will be rewarded with Geralt of Rivia’s sword, 200 crowns and the achievement A Knight to Remember!

Now, turn your attention to getting all the witcher grandmaster diagrams. Some of the treasure hunts will be straight-forward, while others will take you across the entire map. Start off with the treasure hunt for the Manticore set. When you finish searching the cave for the second diagram of the Manticore set, switch over to do the Wolven Gear set that’s located nearby and can be completed in this area. After completing the Wolven set, switch to the Ursine treasure hunt that is located nearby at Flovive. After completing the Ursine set, switch to the Griffin quest which is in the general neighbourhood. Complete this quest and then finally you can resume with the Manticore set quest in Lebioda’s Temple. You will get 2 more diagrams here before the quest sends you south. Before continuing with the quest, switch over to the Feline set quest that are in the general area as well. Once done with that, you can continue following that pesky witcher Merten’s trail across all of Touissant to complete the Manticore set. Turn your attention now to the Wine Wars: Belgaard quest. Go to the location of the advertised auction and it will trigger a cutscene. At the end of the cutscenes you will end up with two quests; Wine Wars: Coronata from Liam and Wine Wars: Vermentino from Matilda. Each quest will have you take on 5 different tasks. You can start with either one and take on the quest until you come upon a ‘Letter on elegant paper’ and read it. Geralt on reading the letter will suggest to go to the other wine wars quest to search for clues. Switch over to your other wine war quest and continue with the tasks until you happen on the same letter. On reading, the quest Wine Wars: The Deus In The Machina will become available. With all those achievements out of the way, carry on with the main quest(s). In La Cage au Fou, you will encounter a creature that you can save. This really has no bearing on the game, but if you want to save it, examine all other items in the room where the objective is to investigate the cauldron. Do this before examining the cauldron. There will be a cutscene and Geralt will then be presented with a choice to lift the curse. There will be another option to make after this, and choose to have the meal WITHOUT spoons. That should do it and continue with the quest. Continue with the main quests that should be straight-forward as they unfold this intriguing story. Note that when you meet up with Damien at Count de la Croix mill, it will be the point of no return. If you haven’t completed any of the achievements above or side quests, now is the time to do it, or make that save you will come back to. Once you get to the main quest The Night of Long Fangs, there’s a choice you will need to make. If you want to come back later and play an alternate path, choose the option ‘I need to think about it’. Now make a manual save that you can come back to later.

For now, choose Syanna’s path which means looking for Damien. Follow the objectives which will eventually complete the quest Night of Long Fangs and start the quest Beyond Hill and Dale. It is quite the fascinating path and enjoy your adventures in it. This is also the route for a chance for some romance, and going with the theme of the quest, it is a bit...different. You’ll know what to do when the time comes. Anyway, very important when you’re in the quest! There will be a point where you will need to talk to the Little Flint Girl. Make a save just before talking to her. Be sure to get back the ribbon she has that was once Syanna’s. You can either win it in a game of Gwent or pay 500 crowns for it. Now carry on with the quest. Towards the end of the quest, when you’re crossing a bridge, Geralt will note the Willow of the Wisp guiding you. Follow it over the railing of the bridge and under it into a cave. There will be a sword and a campfire. Light the campfire and Geralt will kneel (remind you of any game?!) and you will get the Gesheft silver sword. To get out, continue on to the end of the cave and you will climb back up. Return to Syanna and complete the quest. And then prepare for the hardest fecking fight! This fight is so damn hard, it gives you an optional side quest to prepare for the fight! Good luck with the fight, and the one tip I can give you is avoid the swarm of bats. Damn things will take almost all your life with Quen and all. There’re tips online that you should roll towards them to reduce the damage, but my tip is to run around the arena, then roll just as they come for you. Otherwise, be patient and dodge a lot. Check my video if you get stuck.

After the battle, there will be a quest Pomp and Strange Circumstance which will have an optional quest to find out who the fifth victim was to be. If you want a good ending, complete the side quest. When you’re in the tower questioning Syanna, choose these answers; “Cause she turned her back on you, forgot about you?” and “Ever thought to forgive her?” You other responses to Syanna won’t affect the outcome. Your responses to Damien also won’t matter, but when you meet the Empress go with “Got bad news…”, second response doesn’t matter and “You were children then, both”. But by the time you get to talking with the Empress, you should already have received The Order of Vitis Vinifera and gotten the achievement Last Action Hero.

NB - This achievement might glitch on you as it did for me. If it doesn’t pop during the ceremony, then try hard-resetting your Xbox and replay the last checkpoint, going to the tower to see Syanna.

Remember the save you made just before you talked to the Little Flint Girl… Time to load it. This time though, don’t get the ribbon for Syanna from her. I did this for the experience of another path (which is quite interesting and has fascinating stories), but if you’re just interested in getting the last achievement and saving some time, you can load the save you made. Back to The Night of Long Fangs. You will now take the Orianna path. Go the her and ask where to find the Unseen Elder. You will need to help her with something before she tells you how to get to the Unseen Elder. Follow the objectives and you will get to see the Unseen Elder...but he’s not the most welcoming of guests and whatever dialogue option you choose will end up the same. After this, pick the healing potions in the cave, then after this collect your gear. Follow the path in the cave and you will get to a room where you should find a mage’s letter. Track the mage’s footprints and you will eventually find his body, which should give you a tip on how to make your visit to the Unseen Elder more welcome. When you do get the chance to talk to the Elder, when you get the dialogue options, choose “Detlaff spells trouble for you”. After a bit of conversation, you should complete the quest and go to your meeting point with Detlaff for what will be a familiar fight.

And that's it folks! Congratulations on completing one of gaming's greatest games!
