Glitches & Bugs
BE WARNED! I experienced plenty of glitches and bugs that caused some disruption during gameplay and frustration over achievements not unlocking. As far as gameplay, the game froze for a few seconds, quite frequently, and even crashed on several occasions. Another issue was that there were times when the mission target or objective didn’t appear where the marker indicated. Additionally, the prompt to open a door or speak to a mission contact didn’t appear, effectively stalling progress. While this was a nuisance, this was easily corrected by going into the game’s menu and reloading to the last checkpoint. Another common occurrence was that the selected mission’s waypoint would switch to a different mission and objective while driving, or the waypoint marker would direct me to the previously selected mission objective, despite manually selecting a new objective. These were all annoying, but fall far short in comparison to the numerous achievements that didn’t not unlock.
After two playthroughs, while playing online and with the most recent updates, here are the achievements that didn't unlock for me; which unfortunately align with some of the more common threads/complaints with this game: Earn/Spend $500k, Kill/Flip Racket Bosses, 100/300 takedowns, 10 Molotov kills, and earn Loyalty with all underbosses. I was able to correct most of the failures to pop these achievements by deleting the game and saved profile data, then reinstalling the game and playing while offline, or doing all the requirements in one session. However, after six playthroughs I still did not get the following: Family, The New Boss, and No Loose Ends. According to the site, all of these achievements are showing recent activity with getting unlocked, so some may just be more unlucky than others. At the bottom of this page, I will include a potential work around for some of the known glitchy achievements that have worked for some, according to the threads.
Combat Related Cumulative Achievements
For the combat related achievements, you will need to accumulate kills by doing specific tasks or by using specific weapons/equipment against hostile combatants. The achievements listed below can be progressed at pretty much any point in the game, so I have them detailed here. The related achievements not included here will be discussed during the story portion of the walkthrough, once the specifics for those are acquired, become accessible, or where it makes sense to do so. Unfortunately none of the achievements track via the app counter, at least they did not for me when playing in 2020. If you manually track your progress, you can better know if you are close to unlocking the achievement or whether your progress may be glitched. Either way, you will know where you stand prior to completing the game and it can potentially inform you on how other achievement progress may be affected.
Please take note: Progress towards combat achievements is only earned when killing hostiles. Police Officers, indicated by blue markers on the map, are not considered as hostile unless first provoked into attacking. You can instigate police either by committing a crime in front of an officer or allowing a witness to report your crime and being subsequently spotted by a patrol. Police become hostile once you are being actively pursued within a Red Zone, while the Blue Zone indicates they are searching for you. However, it is unclear if kills in this phase contribute towards your overall progress. All other enemies, indicated by red markers on the map, will always be considered hostile and kills against them will contribute towards the associated achievements.
While in combat, pressing will simply punch the target, do this several times to eventually get a takedown prompt.
Sprint at an unaware or fleeing enemy, pressing when within range.
Press when prompted during an enemy melee. (Unknown if this contributes to the 300 takedowns needed)
Press on an unsuspecting enemy. Can be done from cover (press to get into cover), from behind (press to enter “sneak mode”), or on an enemy who is caught off guard. Can be paired with Whistling to lure enemies to more discrete areas. This is helpful to help increase your chances of remaining unnoticed longer, as you thin the ranks. Accumulate 100 Stealth Takedowns to earn an achievement.
Perform 100 Stealth Takedowns on enemies
When facing an alerted enemy, Press and Hold , releasing the button when the meter falls within the window, to unleash a vicious assault on your target and terrorize any witnesses. A terrorized onlooker will fall to the ground, panicked, which allows you to charge at them, shoot back, or run for cover while they are unable to engage for a short period. Do this on 50 targets in total for an achievement.
If you chain three brutal takedowns back-to-back-to-back, with no other kills in-between, you will unlock the other achievement. Make sure you don’t go after a terrorized enemy too early, otherwise you will simply get the normal takedown prompt. This is easily done at any racket related mission with at least three enemies available. Make sure you have adrenaline shots on hand, just in case, as you will likely be shot trying to charge at an enemy.
With the first two achievements for stealth and brutal takedowns unlocked, that leaves another 150 kills to be completed as you see fit. Once you reach 300 total takedowns, you should unlock the remaining takedown achievement.
Enemies will occasionally throw a molotov or grenade. You will need to have 10 enemies kill themselves with their own molotov. This is accomplished by punching or shooting an enemy before he can throw the incendiary, causing it to drop nearby and hopefully engulfing themselves instead. Enemies can often be heard yelling various phrases prior to throwing the device, such as “Light him up” or “Tossing a Molotov!” Once you know a Molotov is imminent, shoot them before the incendiary is released. Once you have caused 10 enemies to kill themselves, the achievement will unlock.
NOTE: Remember that the target must be killed by the fire for this to count. If your target survives the flames, chances are your weapon of choice isn't reducing their health enough for them to become fully engulfed. If you notice this, try shooting them in the body twice before the Molotov explodes on the ground; this worked for me while using the Silenced Masterson handgun.
Make 10 enemies kill themselves with their own Molotovs
(DLC/Update) Proximity Mine
These were added in an update and are available for purchase in the main story, once you gain access to the Weapon Dealer associate. These can be thrown like other equipment, or dropped while driving to destroy a pursuing vehicle by pressing . On foot, this is best paired with the Screaming Zemi, which will help concentrate a group of enemies, allowing you to toss a mine into the group and get multiple kills. This will help increase your kill count quickly and reduce the number of times needed to replenish your stock. Rack up 30 kills with this item to earn the associated achievement under the Faster, Baby! DLC list.
(DLC/Update) Slow-Mo Shooting
This was added in an update and becomes accessible shortly into the first Racket takeover. Pressing while aiming will enter Slow-Mo shooting, allowing you to gain the upper hand in a firefight. This mode is helpful in numerous scenarios to help either turn the tide of a firefight or end one before it can even start. Pairing this with the use of a Screaming Zemi can help group up multiple enemies and allow you to quickly dispatch them in a single activation of Slow-Mo. This method is ideal to help you work towards two related achievements.
The first will be to get five headshots within five seconds. After the first Racket is taken over, you will have access to the Zemi. With this item in hand, find an area with at least five enemies, such as an Enforcer location. Toss the Zemi in the middle of the area to attract all enemies towards the device, effectively confining them into a small cluster. Once you can target five effectively, enter Slow-Mo shooting and a quickly shoot the five hostiles in the head. I personally had problems with weapon accuracy resulting in an enemy getting shot in the upper body or shoulder rather than head, meaning I had to retry this a few times. Once you achieve this feat, you will get the first intended achievement.
***This can be done without Slow-Mo as well, it is just that much more difficult. If playing the base game offline, you will not have access to Slow-Mo shooting. You can use the same process, but I would just add the recommendation that you should use a silenced weapon and work to target enemies that are not in view of the others first, to avoid alerting them all and driving them into cover.
The second is essentially a repeat of the previous achievement, without the five second limitation and only requiring four kills during a single use of Slow-Mo. Headshots are not required but are recommended for quick kills. After 10 instances of earning 4+ kills in a single use of Slow-Mo, you will unlock the other achievement, this one being listed under the DLC list for Sign of the Times.
Kill 4 enemies using Slow-Mo Shooting 10 Times
Vehicle Related Achievements
There are several achievements pertaining to vehicles, only one of which will require a really fast car. Two of the three fastest cars are only acquired after specific progress in the story, one of which I will point out in the story portion of the guide and direct you back here for the tips listed in the relevant section below.
Just take note, the in-game driving is not as polished as some other open world games. I found the vehicles' handling mechanic to be difficult to get used to, especially with faster cars. Taking turns at any significant speed will undoubtedly cause you to skid across the road and into the building or whatever is on the other side of the curb; this is if you don't ram into one of vehicles at the intersection before then. The environment is also troublesome, most objects along the way are solid and any sort of contact will stop you in your tracks. Some of the items that can be broken down or driven through, only do so if hit just right. Just be aware of these issues, as it will hinder your ability to flee police or hit squads effectively until you can get the hang of what your vehicle is capable of.
Steal a Police Car
These are shown on the mini-map as a blue car indicator, and are commonly found driving around the city; or you can influence a cop to come to you by committing a crime and allowing a witness to call the police. Either hijack the vehicle or jump into one that the driver already exited.
Escape a Police Chase after two minutes
Since the above action will likely result in the police chasing you, this would be a good time to escape after being chased for two minutes. This is relatively easy to do, just make sure that you remain in a red zone, which means the police can see you and are actively in pursuit. Drive around the block a few times, make sure you let them catch up so they don't lose visual and you downgrade to a blue zone, which is where police are searching for you. After two straight minutes in a red zone, you can either do vehicle takedowns, cut through some alleys, or speed away to enter the blue zone. After remaining unseen for about 30 seconds in the blue zone, the search is called off and you will earn an achievement for your effort. There is an associate upgrade (Dispatcher, under Burke) that you can call in as a favor to call off the cops, but I am not sure if that will count as an "escape" to unlock the achievement.
Escape a Police Zone after being chased for 2 minutes
Equipping your handgun while driving will prompt a targeting reticle to appear when viewing a hostile or police vehicle. With a vehicle in view, press to cycle through the available vehicle targets and to shoot once the reticule turns green. Shooting out both the back or front tires will cause the vehicle to spin out of control or flip over and explode. This can be done while giving chase or the more likely scenario of being chased. While being chased, press and hold to look backwards to view and target the pursuing vehicle first. There is an alternative ramming option, but that is more complicated and not recommended as you risk wrecking your car, so stick to shooting tires. Once 10 vehicles have been taken out of action, you will earn the associated achievement.
Execute 10 Vehicle Takedowns
High Speed U-Turn
While traveling at 75mph or higher, turn left or right while using the handbrake (hold ) to perform a high speed U-turn. As long as you accomplish a 180 degree turn without colliding into anything, then the next achievement should unlock.
One Good Turn
Make a 180 degree turn at high speed without hitting anything
The next achievement requires you to hold a drift for five seconds. This is easiest done off-road as you do not maintain the same level of traction as you do on a road, which will help extend your drift. You want to find a good place with a lot of open grass and few obstacles. Once in an ideal location, accelerate into the grass/dirt, then tap the handbrake and swerve left to right, to have your vehicle fishtail. Do this for five seconds, as long as your back tires don’t completely regain traction, you will get the next achievement.
50 Meter Jump
Accomplish this by driving your vehicle off any one of the numerous ramps found around the city. As long as you don't flip upside down while in the air, you should land on your wheels and earn the achievement, provided you travelled at least 50 meters. Obviously the faster you are traveling when you take the ramp, the further you can expect to travel; so having a faster vehicle will improve your success.
120mph for 20 seconds
You will need a vehicle with a speed rating of at least 73 to even reach 120mph, but realistically 75 is necessary to offset loss in speed for traveling slightly uphill or minor turning. There are three vehicles in the base game that can reach this feat without relying on vehicle upgrades: De’Leo Stiletto (77), Griffin Marauder (77), and De’Leo Traviata (79). The Traviata is granted through story progression and is recommended to make this feat obtainable, as you can even have this vehicle delivered from the Burke associate. As you increase your underbosses earn, certain vehicle upgrades will also be provided automatically, which further improves your vehicle's performance and makes this even more obtainable. With your capable car of choice, use one of the long stretches of road, most likely a bridge or interstate that runs between or through several districts; an example is the elevated interstate that runs North to South, between Tickfaw Harbor and Southdowns. Wherever you can, make sure to keep your vehicle traveling over 120mph for at least 20 seconds. Once you reach this feat and your speed drops below 120mph the achievement will pop.
Drive at 120 mph or faster for 20 seconds
Money Related Achievements
There are a few achievements related to money that you should be aware of. Most of the games involves Lincoln disrupting the flow of money from the racket operations, thus crippling the Marcano operation. Therefore, almost everything you do to dismantle this operation will have some cash value that you profit from, either directly from picking up stacks of cash found in hostile areas, killing hostiles, or completing racket objectives; or indirectly from a kickback, a percentage of a controlled rackets earnings. The DLC Faster, Baby! added the Herbalism operation that is another source for earning additional funds during your playthrough.
Wallet vs Stash
For starters, all money picked up or earned from your endeavors will accumulate in your wallet, until it is either taken to your stash (a safe in Sammy's Bar) or handed over to the consigliere (Vito perk). Money in the wallet is at risk of loss, as it will be cut in half if you are killed during the playthrough. Therefore, it is best to regularly deposit funds in the safe to avoid losing large sums. This process become exponentially easier once you acquire the Consigliere perk, as your contact will come to you and will safely hold onto your funds, rather than having to drive across town to place it in the safe yourself. Money in the stash is still accessible when purchasing items, as any purchases made in excess of the funds in your wallet will be deducted from the stash; so there is no downside to depositing your money regularly.
Once you have a combined total (current wallet $ + current stash $) of $150,000 you will earn an achievement.
Racket Earn & Kickback
Taking over rackets allows you to assign those operations to one of three potential assets. Lincoln in turn is provided with a kickback, a percentage of the asset's total earn. The kickback varies based on the loyalty of said asset, maxing out at 2% every 24 hours in-game; which is roughly 1 hour of real time in gameplay. This kickback does not accumulate, so it will need to be picked up regularly; again the consigliere perk can help here, once upgraded it will automatically pick up your kickback when called. Assigning more rackets, completing trafficking missions, or flipping and recruiting informants and racket bosses are ways to help increase the rackets earn.
There is an achievement for earning $10,000 in a kickback from a single underboss. In order to accomplish this, you will need an underboss to have a total earn in excess of $500,000 and with maximum loyalty (2% of 500k = 10k). This is best paired with the Just You And Me achievement, as you will need to assign most of the rackets to one underboss to get their earn high enough. After that, it is a matter of allowing the earn to accumulate until there is at least $10,000 to be picked up. Retrieve it in person or use the upgraded consigliere perk to unlock the achievement. This is outlined in the Story - Part 2 page as well.
Receive $10,000 in earn from one Underboss
All money earned and spent is supposed to count toward the final two achievements. Therefore, all funds lost upon a death or money spent on equipment, weapons, or upgrades should accumulate toward the $500,000 earned and spent. Given that money can be lost upon a death, you will likely need to accumulate more than $500,000 in order to spend $500,000, depending on how often you are killed and/or how diligent you are about moving your funds to the stash. Progress on these two achievements are known to be glitchy, and progress towards them will likely be lost; please see the achievement workaround in the section below if you experience this issue.
However, you should unlock an achievement once you have accumulated $500,000 and another for spending an accumulated $500,000; both of which can easily be earned in one playthrough.
GLITCHED ACHIEVEMENT STARTING POINT & WORK AROUND
There are a few options that are floating around the threads as solutions or even a work around for some achievement glitches. Some players have reported success, while others were still unlucky and continued to have issues. Therefore, these tips may or may not help, but what other options do you have?
Below are the two main methods that have shown promise, which will depend on which game media you have in your possession, and should be your starting point.
Hard Disc - Initial Release
If you are in possession of the Mafia III game on disc, your best option would be to install the original version of the game from the start while offline, then continue to play through the game offline to avoid having the updates installed.
This is likely your best option to complete the base achievement list, as the evidence suggests the root cause of certain achievements glitching and not unlocking arose from a March 2017 update. Therefore, theoretically, playing the base game or a version of it prior to March 2017 should limit the risk of the glitches and allow you to complete the full base achievement list unhindered. Just note, achievements will not pop while playing offline, it is only after reconnecting to Xbox Live that you will know if you have earned any of the cumulative achievements. To aid in tracking, keeping a side record of takedowns and Molotov kills may help, but just know that you can easily grind all of these achievement requirements in one session while online if you didn't unlock them over the course of your playthroughs.
The main purpose of your offline playthroughs will be to flip/kill the required number of bosses, earn $500k, and gain the loyalty of each underboss. These are the achievements that are known to be glitched, whereas the other problematic achievements can be earned through grinding in one session, or by using the work around listed below. You will need to complete the story on the first run, but the second should only require completion up to assigning the ninth district to your underboss. At this point, you should be able to go online to sync up your progress earned between the two playthroughs. Then, install the game updates and the DLC. When you load up your second run progress, you are already far enough into the story to access the new missions, effectively avoiding the need to start a third playthrough.
Digital Download - Definitive Edition Upgrade
If you purchased the digital version of the game recently, then you will be automatically upgraded to Mafia III: Definitive Edition during installation/update. The Definitive Edition has replaced the base game on the marketplace, so I am not sure you can even find or download the base version from a digital source going forward. Since this version is automatically updated, there will be no benefit or protection from corruption/glitches when playing offline. Fewer issues have been reported since the release so there is hope that this issue has been resolved, but since I played online from a hard copy initially, I cannot confirm one way or the other.
If you had purchased and installed the game prior to the Definitive Edition upgrade, then you may still be at risk since you will likely need to install some updates or already have the defective updates installed to play the game. If you are able, deleting the game and your saved profile data, then reinstalling the game may be an option to help limit this risk. Again, I cannot be certain this will help or not. Your playthrough using this method will follow the guide as is, as you are already online and should unlock your achievements as you meet the criteria. It may be worth keeping a side record of kills, to make sure you unlock those achievements when you should, and to know whether or not you are impacted by game save corruption before you complete an entire playthrough.
A game crash will likely reset your progress toward these achievements, and some are reportedly reset upon exiting the game or turning off the Xbox. Therefore, one workaround for this is to grind all the requirements in one sitting. Some achievements would be easier to accomplish this way than others.
Shh, Shh / Closed Casket / Combat Specialist
To avoid progress resetting, you will want to grind all the required kills in one sitting, which is actually easier than it sounds. Some enemy locations will reset when you travel far enough away from the location, essentially repopulating the enemies in the previously cleared area. Such locations are the Racket Base of Operations, where the racket boss will be located once you have destroyed enough of the racket's earnings. Delray Hollow has two locations, Perla's Nightclub (Prostitution) and the First Baptist Church (Smack) that are discovered during the story mission The Way of Flesh. Either location can be repeatedly raided up until the racket boss reveals himself. The church has a better easier layout to move through and is recommended to use. This location normally contains nine enemies, of which one will arrive via a truck from the south alley shortly after entering the area. Once all hostiles are taken out, exit the area via the south alley and continue south a little ways until the enemies respawn. Once you are roughly just past the building on the corner, with a telephone booth, you should be able to see the hostile markers on the mini-map pop up again. Now you can re-enter the area and repeat the kills as need to earn the takedown achievements. Both stealth and brutal takedowns contribute to the 300 needed, so make sure to get both of those completed (if needed) on your way to 300.
Use the same location as the above, the church in Delray Hollow, to grind these kills as well. At least two enemies in this location will throw molotovs when in the combat state. Like the above method, flee the area to respawn the enemies and repeat to grind all 10 kills in a relatively quick manner.
Baby, You're a Rich Man
There is a money earning glitch that can help you rack up $500,000 relatively quickly. In the French Ward, start the racket takeover for drugs. Interrogate informants until you receive the mission to Tail bagman to the find Gaston's stash. Drive around until you locate the target vehicle and tail them to the stash location. Clear the area of hostiles, then grab the $10,000 off the table in the back of the warehouse before leaving the area. Similar to resetting the hostiles in the above achievements, you will need to leave the area, roughly 100m away, to essentially reset the cash bundle. Re-enter the warehouse to find that the cash bundle has respawned on the table in the back corner once more. Repeat this until earning $500k and the achievement unlocks, or if you are offline, repeat up to 50 times to have picked up all $500k in one go. Please note that repeating this pick up will easily meet your cash destruction requirement for the racket, but if you return to the detective to advance the racket takeover this glitch will no longer be available.
This glitch is still available as of November 2020 and is yet to be patched, and likely never will be as support for this game seems non-existent.
Hole in Your Pocket
Accumulate $500,000 between your stash and wallet during normal progress (or by using the above money glitch) in one playthrough, then spend it all in one go to avoid your progress being reset. Without using the glitch, you will need to focus on grabbing the money pickups, retrieving your kickbacks, and completing most of the available racket missions during the story. Additionally, be sure to call the consigliere often so you are not killed while holding a large sum of cash in your wallet. Once you have banked $500k, call the weapon dealer and go on a spending spree, buying weapons and available upgrades will allow you to spend over $500k in a matter of seconds to earn the achievement.
No Loose Ends / The New Boss
Reportedly, this can be earned in one sitting. Which means you cannot turn off or exit the game. You will need to know exactly what needs to be done to limit your game time on this run and hope the game doesn't crash in the process. A focused path is ideal here, don't worry about killing every mobster or grabbing every small stack of cash. Instead focus on the primary targets, just clip the enforcer, rush in and grab the stash, or plant the explosive and get out. When it comes to the boss takedown, head straight for main target, as the rest of the hostiles will disappear after grabbing the boss anyway. Just remember that you will need to eliminate the district bosses in the first six locations, in order to access the final three district's racket mission: Frisco Fields, Southdowns, and the French Ward. For the New Boss achievement, you can ignore the Frisco Fields district, as you cannot flip that boss anyway. These would be several hour long endeavors, so this may only be an option for the most dedicated players out there.
You should be able to able to unlock this by completing all five tasks for each of agenda missions for the respective underbosses in one go. You will need to leave this mission series untouched until late in the story, as it will only become fully accessible after entrusting each underboss with three districts. If you still don't unlock this while online, you may have to complete a few trafficking missions as well. The idea here is that these trafficking missions will help earn additional loyalty that may have been earned but reset in previous sittings where districts/rackets were assigned. I cannot independently verify whether or not this will work, as I gave up on trying to get this after three failed attempts but also did not attempt this method.
DLC - Danger Close
This has a bugged flag so I am adding it here. I personally didn't have any issues with this, but would assume this suffers the same accumulation problem that the takedowns or Molotov achievements experience; resetting upon a game crash and/or exiting the game. Like those achievements, a work around would be to grind all the kills in one sitting. Due to limited availability and only being able to stock up on your supply via the weapon dealer, this one is a bit harder to grind. Luckily, there is a location where you can earn 10+ kills with one usage, but it is during the Sign of the Times DLC storyline. I will point this location out in the story portion of the walkthrough; but essentially, you will travel to a mission location and are required to cross a balcony where 20+ cult members are congregating below. These hostiles tend to run away at the first sign of trouble, but if you can toss a mine into the middle of the group before they are spooked, you can easily kill 10+ cultists. If you don't get the achievement on the first attempt, reload the latest checkpoint to be returned to the previous room and have another go of it. Repeat as many times as necessary, but really two or three should earn you the 30 kills needed for the achievement.
