Game Room

Writing a walkthrough for Game Room has proved to be an incredibly hard task, not knowing exactly which games readers have has meant that I've had to write a skeleton walkthrough and let you fill in the gaps. I've tried to be as thorough and in depth as possible without assuming which games you'll be playing or how you'll be playing them.

I've pointed out along the walkthrough which achievements you can earn without actually spending any MSP; they're mostly located at the top of the walkthrough, as we'll be getting them out of the way. That being said when it comes to spending MSP I've left that completely down to your discretion. In the final page of the walkthrough you'll see that I've compiled a list of games that are easy to score Gold medals on. This isn't a list of "quick" ways to get medals, but rather a list of medals you can earn with little effort if you're prepared to spend the time and MSP needed.

I want to take this point to apologise if you've come here hoping to find a guide that will show you the cheapest route to completing this game because that's not what this is. As I've said, what I've written is a skeleton walkthrough for the achievements for you to apply how you wish and a list of games that stick out as easy to score Gold medals on.

Given the nature of Game Room there isn't a great deal I can offer up in the sense of tips and hints. That being said if you're looking to save as much MSP as you can it's a great idea to research games before you play them, try and find as many games you can earn decent exp on in as few plays as possible. Personally I opted to just outright purchase a whole bunch of games and take my time with them. If you're planning to do that and you're looking to complete the game as quickly as possible make sure you choose the easiest games.

As I said, there isn't much in the way of great tips for this game. Just be careful before you shell out a load of MSP.

Before we begin I suggest that you download all of the available Game Packs. They're free to download and you get them from the Marketplace.

Straight off the bat you'll get your first achievement--you don't need to do anything other than boot the game up. Once the game has booted up you'll automatically be taken to the Showcase Arcade and unlock the first achievement.

For the next few achievements you'll either need an Xbox Free (Silver) account or a friend to essentially boost with. If you're boosting this with a friend then make sure that you both have the game to make it go a little faster. From the main menu select "Challenges," and then choose a friend to send a challenge to. Set the challenge so that it's score related and can only be attempted once. You're able to send and have up to 10 active challenges, so repeat this process 10 times. Have your friend/spare account start the challenge, and then press start and quit. You need to go through them and score a few points and then quit too. The challenges can be a little slow to update but using this method will ensure that you win the challenges. Once you've won all 10 and unlocked the achievement related to that repeat the entire process again, and win another 10 challenges to unlock the achievement for winning 20 challenges. It's at this point that the walkthrough becomes increasingly harder to write because it becomes increasingly subjective. I've made it a point to not assume which games you've decided to play or purchase. I have, however, assumed that you'll be aiming for Gold medals when it comes to medal related achievements. I've tried to lay the next part of the walkthrough out in a logical order, but given the nature of Game Room you might find you're unlocking achievements in a different order to what I've listed in here. If that's the case all I can suggest is to take the information from the walkthrough which you can use. Before we begin the next half of the walkthrough I have a little bit of information I want to explain...

Medal related achievements: These achievements require that you achieve a certain amount of medals. It doesn't matter if those medals are Bronze, Silver or Gold, only that you've unlocked the predetermined number of medals total. If you unlock a Bronze medal and later play the game again and manage to surpass what previously earned you the Bronze medal and you achieve a Silver medal this does not count as 2 medals as you still only have a single medal, it's just a different medal now.

Level related achievements: For each of the level related achievements you'll need to earn medals, and for each level you'll need to earn 20 experience points.

Bronze medal = 2 experience, Silver medal = 3 experience, Gold medal = 5 experience.

If you earn a Bronze medal (2 experience) and later play the game again and manage to surpass what previously earned you the Bronze medal and on this attempt you manage to achieve a silver medal you're not rewarded an addtional 3 experience but instead 1 experience.

Time related achievements: The timer for these achievements only counts time actually spent playing games, and so leaving Game Room running over night will result in it realising that you're idle and the timer freezing. You can keep track of the time you've spent playing games in your arcade by selecting "My Profile" from the main menu.

So with that, let's crack on with the walkthrough. The next achievement up for grabs is just for earning any kind of medal on any game. Once you've done this you'll be rewarded with this achievement.

Keeping on the track of time related achievements I think it's time we work toward the real pain that is "My Blisters Have Blisters". For this achievement you need to play a game for 1 hour continuously, there are a lot of workarounds and easy games to get this on and for the most part it involves a cheap exploit. I'm not going to list every game you can get this achievement on because that'd be too much information. I have, however, provided a list of games you can score easy medals on in the next page. Most of which involve sitting around and spending a lot of time not actually playing games. For example, take the game Pitfall! In this game you're able to avoid any danger by not leaving the first screen. While on this first screen just move once a minute to stop the game thinking that you've gone idle, and after a hour of constant "play" you'll unlock the achievement. Bear in mind that you don't "Need" to do this on Pitfall! There are plenty of games you can use similar exploits on to get the achievement.

Information

While writing a walkthrough for Game Room it's became evident that predicting the exact order you'd unlock the achievements in was near impossible. With that in mind I decided it'd be better to create a "skeleton" walkthrough that you could easily apply to your own experience. However I didn't feel that was enough, and so I later decided to add an additional page. On this page users could see a list of cabinet games with easy Gold medals, and perhaps more importantly, the best and easiest methods to get those Gold medals! A lot of the medals described below are time related, and something you'll notice is I'll tell you to move or press a button at least once a minute. This is because if you don't move for around 1 minute the game will think that you've gone idle and will freeze the timer.

Just like with the walkthrough I'm not trying to convince you which games to completely purchase or which to just use single plays on. I've left that up to you to decide... it's not like I'm paid commission! Anyway, the only medals I've listed in this walkthrough are Gold medals, as when it comes down to it that's really what you should be aiming for. If you feel that I've left a game out please post in the Game Room Walkthrough Discussion thread. I'll need to know the name of the game, which medals you can achieve and the method that makes achieving them easy.

Finally I'd like to thank Edward Hyena for putting together this superb little collection of data on Game Room. If you'd like to see more information on the games in Game Room and each of their medals, please follow this link http://www.tinyurl.com/GameRoomMedalChart

Suggested Games

Activision Decathalon - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

You can score the Point Buster medal on this game fairly easy if you're decent at mashing buttons. However, it's a good idea to play a classic game and familiarise yourself with a few of the game types. "Pole Vault" seems to catch most people out. The real win though is that you can achieve both the Survivalist and Time Spender medals with a single play of the game! The trick to this is instead of following the on screen instructions just move the analogue stick once a minute to keep the timer going.

Adventure - Time Spender

You can only score a single Gold medal in this game because that's all that's up for grabs, however it's one of the easiest Gold medals available in Game Room. Just remain on the first screen and move about once a minute to keep the timer going. Do this for 45 minutes and you'll have the Gold medal.

Asteroids - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

It's incredibly easy to score the Point Buster and Survivalist medals in this game in one play. I found it a lot easier to actually stay stationary, and just turn and shoot rather than actually moving around and shooting. If you've purchased the game and decide you want to get a Gold medal for Time Spender too just keep starting the game up over and over letting yourself get killed. It's not exactly the most time efficient method but I opted to do this and watch a film/TV at the same time.

Asteroids (2600) - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

You can use the same method in this as you can in the above listed "Asteroids".

Asteroids Deluxe - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

You can use the same method in this as you can in the above listed "Asteroids".

Astrosmash - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

One of the easiest games to score all 3 Gold medals on. While playing this game keep shooting at the falling objects, and whenever you see a diamond looking object try to shoot it out of the sky because if it hits the floor you'll die. That being said, every 1,000 points you score you'll be rewarded with an extra life, and while playing through the game it'll be evident how easy it is to score 1,000 points. Just keep playing and you'll easily be able to get the Point Buster and Survivalist Gold medals in a single play. If you have the stamina to play the game non-stop you could also get a Gold medal for Time Spender. If not just play it at your own pace or if you own the game you could keep letting yourself die.

Beamrider - Survivalist and Time Spender

You can score Gold medals for Survivalist and Time Spender easily in this game. The game won't start up until you press either left of right; no enemies will spawn, and your vehicle will remain stationary until you do so. The workaround for this is that you can press down once a minute to keep the timer running and score both of the aforementioned medals.

Buzz Bombers - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

There's an easy way to get all 3 Gold medals for this game if you're prepared to put the time in for the Time Spender medal. You'll be able to get the other 2 Gold medals in a single play. The trick here is to kill all the bees except one and leave it alive as long as possible. Leave any beehives or honeycomb alone and let the bird take care of them because that will give you the points for the Point Buster achievement. When you decide to kill the last bee is up to you, and lastly, don't forget to move at least once a minute to make sure that the game doesn't think you're idle.

Chopper Command - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

This game is easy enough to score all 3 Gold medals in if you take the game slowly. Don't rush just very slowly advance and take enemies out slowly. It's a good idea to move backwards every now and then because the game automatically drags you along, and if you're not careful it'll end up getting you killed. Once you have the Point Buster and Survivalist medals just keep moving back and forth avoiding enemies until you have the Time Spender medal.

Cosmic Commuter - Survivalist and Time Spender

You can score 2 Gold medals in this game with relative ease. The medals are for Survivalist and Time Spender, and the method you need to use is very similar to that of "Beamrider". The game won't really begin until you've held up and then down to make your rocket ship land and spawn your small vehicle. The workaround is that you can just tap down once a minute and keep the timer going without actually starting the game up.

Crystal Castles - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

You can get all 3 Gold medals in this game fairly easy, but it'll require 2 separate plays of the game at least. First of all I'll explain the very quick method of unlocking the Point Buster Gold medal. As soon as the game starts move to the back corner of the level and jump. Doing this you'll be transported via a secret doorway to a later level, pick up a few pellets and you'll have obliterated the score required for the Point Buster Gold medal. Now with that out of the way I'll explain the best method for unlocking the Survivalist and Time Spender medals. Progress through the game until you reach the 4th level. To complete a level you need to pick up all of the pellets, and you can do this by either walking over them yourself of letting an enemy walk over them. Once you reach the 4th level you need to kill the walking centipede looking enemies. Do this by waiting until the top of their body turns red and then run through them--this will kill them. Once you've killed them move into the castle via the black doorway. and you'll be immune from attacks as the bee's aren't able to enter the castle, and the witch should just stay in her corner. Remember to keep moving at least once a minute so that the game doesn't think you've gone idle.

Frostbite - Survivalist and Time Spender

Another game which is easy if you own it. Frostbite will need multiple plays for one of its Gold medals, and bear that in mind when reading this. For the Survivalist Gold medal you'll need to jump across the ice platforms until your igloo is complete, and you're able to progress to the next level. At this point just wait around this level so that you can rack up some extra time, and don't forget to move a little every now and then so that the game doesn't think that you're idle. When you're close to freezing to death enter the igloo, progress to next level and repeat this process. When you reach the third level just keep moving and let yourself die. Doing this you'll have more than enough time to reach the required time for a Gold medal in Survivalist. For Time Spender's Gold medal you can either play the game and try to score until you feel you're unable to get a higher score, or just keep booting the game up and moving your character once a minute to ensure the game doesn't think you're idle.

Galactic Warriors - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

You can score all 3 Gold medals in this game with little effort. Boot up the game and select to play as the character on the left. Once the first level loads up you'll be facing off against a strange looking opponent that fires at you. What you have to do is just before his bullet hits you, block. Yes, it's that simple... every time you successfully block you'll be rewarded with points. You take a little damage with each block, but you have more than enough time to get both the Point Buster and Survivalist Gold medals in a single play. If you then want to work on getting the Time Spender Gold medal, you can either repeat this process a few times, as you rack up quite a bit of time doing so, or if you own the game you can let yourself die repeatedly, racking up a minute or so each time.

Gravitar - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

There's an easy trick to getting all 3 Gold medals in Gravitar, and pulling it off is very easy. Instead of fighting gravity the best way of playing this game is to let gravity do most of the work for you! Once you start the game you'll notice you're getting pulled toward the sun. Use your thrusters to put yourself in orbit around the sun. Once you've done this you should be able to ride the game out for as long as you want. You might need to tap the thruster from time to time, but for the most part you'll be fine. Now while you're in orbit around the sun you'll only have to worry about 2 enemies that will constantly respawn. They're easy to kill just keep firing at them as they approach you and you'll see that in no time at all you've racked up enough points for Point Buster, and you should have Survivalist too. Just keep the process going until you've got Time Spender too.

Gravitar (2600) - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

You can use the same method in this as you can in the above listed "Gravitar".

Jail Break - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

You can get all 3 Gold medals in Jail Break, but it might take a little practice to get the method down. When you take control of your character you need to move to the top of the screen. From here the AI will repeatedly spawn in 2 locations allowing you to rack up a lot of points. The problem is you need to kill them pretty quickly or they'll end up killing you. Sometimes the pattern changes a little, and sometimes you'll kill them before they even come onto the screen, so you'll have to trust your gut a little and pay attention to the points. Now, a single enemy will spawn at the top of the screen. To kill him just first forwards. Up to 2 enemies will spawn at the bottom corner of the screen; to kill them fire diagonally down and to the right. Once you've worked out the pattern just repeat this process, and eventually some guys on motorbikes will turn up and run you over, killing you. When you respawn just repeat the process. You'll need all your lives to get the Gold medal for Point Buster, so if you get killed by an enemy (excluding the ones who run you over) you probably wont rack up enough points. When you've got the Gold medal for Point Buster you should also have the Gold medal for Survivalist. All that's left is to either repeat the process for the Time Spender Gold medal, or if you own the game just keep letting yourself get killed.

Keystone Kapers - Survivalist and Time Spender

For Survivalist just complete the first few levels without dying, and not capturing the thief until the last possible moment. Once you're on the 4th level just run backwards and forwards, but don't leave the screen you start on. Doing so you'll tip over 12 minutes and get a Gold medal for Survivalist before you get game over. Once you're done play again and see how high a score you can get--a Silver medal isn't too hard. When you've had enough of playing the game just leave your character on the first screen, and move him once a minute to stop the game from thinking you're idle until you've got a Gold medal for Time Spender.

Lunar Lander - Survivalist and Time Spender

You can pick up 2 easy Gold medals in Lunar Lander for Survivalist and Time Spender, and it's very simple; when the game starts just turn your rocket ship so that it's facing up, and then tap the boosters to stop yourself smashing into the floor. You have plenty of fuel to pick up the Survivalist Gold medal, and then it's just a case of repeating the process until you've got a Gold medal for Time Spender too.

Pitfall! - Survivalist and Time Spender

Another 2 easy Gold medals here for Survivalist and Time Spender. All you have to do is stay on the first screen and move your character around once a minute to keep the timer going. You'll be able to get both Gold medals in a single play.

Shark! Shark! - Survivalist and Time Spender

In this game you can pick up another 2 Gold medals just by avoiding enemies. You'll be in the sea and in control of a small fish. The object of the game is to eat fish that are smaller than you while avoiding fish that are bigger than you. Just keep avoiding fish and you shouldn't have any trouble picking up a Gold medal for Survivalist, and eventually a Gold medal for Time Spender. While working toward Time Spender there's no harm in trying to get a Gold medal for Point Buster. It will take a little bit of patience though so just play it slow and safe.

Super Breakout - Survivalist and Time Spender

You can pick up 2 easy Gold medals in Super Breakout with no effort. It just takes some time. Once you've missed hitting the first ball back up you're supposed to press a button on your controller to make the next ball come into play. Instead of that just move the slider back and forth to keep the timer going. This will ensure you can achieve Gold medals for both Survivalist and Time Spender in a single play.

Super Breakout (2600) - Survivalist and Time Spender

You can use the same method in this as you can in the above listed "Super Breakout".

Yar's Revenge - Point Buster, Survivalist and Time Spender

This game is fairly easy to score 3 Gold medals on. At the very least you should be able to get 2. First of all I'll explain the best way of getting Gold medals for Survivalist and Time Spender. In the middle of the screen is a multi-coloured strip. This is the neutral zone and in here the small bullet cannot kill you, and the only thing you need to worry about is dodging the enemy at the side of the screen it starts spinning because it'll fire out toward you. Stay in the neutral zone, and just keep going up. Keep an eye on the timer as every minute or so it'll freeze. When this happens just stop moving up or down, and then continue to move up or down. To score you need to kill the enemy on the side of the screen. I found the best way was to wait until the little enemy homing missile was well away from the enemy. Once that's happened move toward the enemy and push up against the blocks around him until you see a multicoloured missile on the side of the screen you spawned on. When that appears you need to fire it where the enemy ship is going to be (as the enemy ship moves up and down). Repeat this on subsequent levels until you've score enough points for the Gold medal.
