Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition

Image 1

Welcome to my achievement walkthrough for Hollow Knight, a fantastic 2D metroidvania developed by Team Cherry and originally released for PC in 2017.

You control the Knight as he explores the insect kingdom of Hallownest. Along the way you will encounter NPCs, battle numerous enemies and bosses, find upgrades, and learn spells and abilities as you attempt to uncover the secrets of the world. The game has a bit of a Dark Souls feel: minimal direction is given, death results in a dropped soul that you must return to in order to recover your geo (game currency), difficult boss encounters that require practice in order to learn their attack patterns, and a somewhat minimal narrative that is expanded through NPC interaction and world exploration.

There are 63 achievements, none of which involve any sort of co-op or online play.

Completion requires at least two playthroughs. I recommend three:

  • Classic mode playthrough with 112% completion to earn 54 achievements
  • Steel Soul playthrough with 100% completion to earn five achievements
  • Speedrun in Classic mode with sub-5 hour completion and then sub-20 hour 100% completion to earn three achievements

After finishing these playthroughs you will just have one achievement left which requires completing the Pantheon of Hallownest, a brutally difficult hour long boss rush.

General Hints and Tips

Image 1

  • You can open the pause menu with cn_start and choose "Quit to Menu" at any time to avoid dying. When you continue you will start from your most recent bench. This is especially important to prevent Fragile charms from breaking and even more important in Steel Soul mode where death ends your playthrough.
  • There are three pairs of conflicting achievements where you can only earn one or the other per playthrough. These six achievements are directly related to Zote (save him or let him die), the Nailsmith (kill him or let him live), and the Grimm Troupe (complete the Grimm questline and defeat the Nightmare King or banish the troupe) and will be explained in detail in the walkthrough.
  • The game released initially on PC with 100% possible completion. Four free updates were released that added more content, bringing the total possible completion to 112%. The Xbox version includes all of the content from the PC version of the game.
  • The Hollow Knight wiki is a great source for information.

Game Modes

There are three game modes. Classic is the only one available at the start and the other two are unlocked through progression.

External image

Classic is the the standard game mode. You will earn 54 achievements in your first Classic playthrough.

Steel Soul is unlocked after completing the game in Classic mode. Death is permanent.

Godseeker is unlocked late in your first playthrough. This is an optional boss rush mode that you don't have to play.

Character Information, Upgrades, and Abilities

The health meter is displayed as a row of masks in the upper left corner of the screen. Most damage results in the loss of one mask, but some enemies and hazards cause two masks of damage. Note that there is no fall damage, although falls from certain heights will result in a brief stun after landing. You start with five masks and can earn up to four more by finding Mask Shards; every four Mask Shards found adds one mask to the health meter.

Soul is a white energy collected from enemies and Soul Totems. It is displayed in a circular meter next to the health meter. Soul can be used to Focus or to cast Spells. You can increase the Soul meter by finding Vessel Fragments; every three Vessel Fragments found adds an additional node to the Soul meter.

External image

The primary way to heal is through the Focus ability. By holding cn_B, you will take about two seconds to Focus and use 1/3 of the Soul meter to restore one mask of health.

External image

If you have enough Soul, you can hold the button and repeat the healing process two or three times. You are also fully healed when you sit at a benches, which are found throughout the world. Sitting at a bench creates a checkpoint and if you die or continue, you restart from the last bench you used. Some benches need to be unlocked by paying geo.

External image

Geo is the game's currency. It is dropped by enemies and can be found in breakable geo deposits and the occasional chest. Geo will not disappear unless you leave the current screen so there's no immediate rush to pick it up. It can, however, fall into spikes where it cannot be reached or into acid water where it is destroyed.

If you die, you will restart from the most recent bench (or possibly at a checkpoint created after defeating a boss or acquiring an upgrade). You lose all of your geo, which is then contained in a Shade that spawns near the spot where you died. Your Soul meter is broken as well and capped at 66% capacity. The Shade will be marked on your map and if you defeat it, your Soul meter will be repaired and you will recover the geo that was contained in the Shade. Should you die before defeating your Shade, a new Shade is created and the original Shade is lost along with all the geo it contained, so be careful.

Charms are equippable items that provide varied bonuses. You can acquire 40 different charms as you advance through the game. Charms require between one and four notches to equip. You start with three notches and can find/buy additional charm notches for a total of 11. The charm screen in the Inventory menu shows what charms are equipped, charm notches that are used and available, and the notch cost for equipping each charm.

External image

It is possible to overcharm yourself, but I don't suggest doing this and only mention it as a possibility. If you repeatedly try to equip a charm that requires more notches than you have available, it will eventually equip and you will get the overcharmed notification.

External image

While overcharmed you take double damage from all sources, so it's all but impossible to gain an advantage from this situation. In the image above you can see that Mark of Pride, which requires three notches, was forced into the 11th notch, overflowing into two additional purple notches and causing the overcharmed effect.

Your weapon is a Nail that is wielded like a sword. You can find resources that let you upgrade the Nail, increasing its damage. You can also learn Nail Arts which are charged Nail attacks.

External image

As you progress you will find items that grant special abilities.

  • The Mothwing Cloak allows you to do a forward dash
  • The Mantis Claw allows you to climb and jump off of walls
  • The Crystal Heart allows you to do a super dash
  • The Monarch Wings allows you to double jump
  • Isma's Tear allows you to swim in acid water
  • The Shade Cloak gives you invincibility when you dash
  • The Dream Nail can do several things, including collecting a large amount of soul from living enemies
  • The Dream Gate allows you to set a waypoint that you can instantly return to from anywhere in the world

You can also learn Spells that cost Soul to cast.

  • Vengeful Spirit (upgraded to Shade Soul) is a horizontal spirit projectile
  • Desolate Dive (upgraded to Descending Dark) is a downward slam that releases a shockwave
  • Howling Wraiths (upgraded to Abyss Shriek) is an upward soul blast

There are four Inventory menus accessed with cn_back.

  • The Inventory page shows your Nail upgrade status, Mask Shard and Vessel Fragment progress, Spells and Nail Arts, and items you have found
  • The Charms page shows your equipped charms, charm notches, and all charms found
  • The Map becomes available when you buy your first Map from Cornifer
  • The Hunter's Journal becomes available after meeting the Hunter in Greenpath

The Hunter's Journal records an entry for every enemy that you kill. Enemy pages include a basic description and notes from the Hunter that require killing enemies multiple times to unlock. There are two achievements tied to completion of the Hunter's Journal so as you progress, so always try to kill enemies in your path for journal progress.

The World

External image

Hallownest is made up of 15 interconnected areas. Much of the world is inaccessible until you defeat bosses and/or acquire additional abilities. Individual maps are purchased from Cornifer, an NPC who can be found in each area. These maps start out incomplete and can be completed through your own exploration.

You can refer to this detailed interactive map to see locations for everything in the game.

There are three ways to fast travel: Stag Stations are found throughout Hallownest and once unlocked, allow you to summon the Last Stag who can take you to any other unlocked Stag Station.

External image

The Tram System provides a direct connection between several areas and requires finding the Tram Pass to operate.

External image

The Dreamgate, found late in the game, allows you to create a waypoint that you can return to from anywhere in the world.

Completion Breakdown

Image 1

Goals for this playthrough:

  • Reach 112% completion
  • Acquire all 16 Mask Shards, all 9 Vessel Fragments, all 40 Charms, and all 13 Maps
  • Find all 11 Stag Stations
  • Rescue all 46 Grubs
  • Acquire all abilities and Spells
  • Defeat all bosses (and hopefully learn their attack patterns)
  • Complete all three Colosseum trials
  • Complete the first four Godhome Pantheons
  • Save Zote in Greenpath
  • Fully upgrade the Nail and spare the Nailsmith's life
  • Complete the Grimm Troupe questline by defeating Nightmare King Grimm
  • Advance Mr. Mushroom through his seven locations
  • See the three different endings

Create a new save file (which can only be in Classic mode) and you'll gain control of the Knight after some introductory scenes. You begin after dropping into a deep ravine. Head to the right and break through doors to enter a cave where you'll encounter your first enemy- a Crawlid. Kill it and be sure to collect the geo it drops. Continue until you reach an outside area and in the bottom right you will find a geo deposit- attack it several times until it breaks and collect the geo that drops. Platform your way up to the next level and you can inspect an item that explains Focus and Soul. You can hold cn_B to focus, which drains Soul to restore health.

You'll find flying enemies called Vengeflies in the next area. Break the door in the bottom left to get into a cave that has a geo deposit at the top. Drop back down, then make your way up some platforms towards the next area. Be careful here as a spike will fall onto the last platform once you jump onto it. At the top on the left you'll find a cave with a Lifeblood Cocoon. Breaking these cocoons spawns Lifeseeds (little blue creatures) that can be killed to add blue masks to your health meter. Blue lifeblood masks are temporary- you lose them when you take damage or if you rest at a bench. Head to the right, break a door, and be prepared for the floor to collapse when you reach this point. Inch forward and when the floor shakes, jump back so that you can ensure falling into an opening on the left that contains a geo deposit. Then continue to the right and down. Hop across some platforms over spikes (beware of falling spikes) and before jumping up to the final platform, note a darkened lower path. This path contains a geo deposit and a long stretch of spikes that can be crossed by pogoing over them (jump, then attack downward to hit the spikes with your nail and bounce off safely). Jump over the second set of spikes and drop down where you can open a chest and then collect the Fury of the Fallen charm (1/40), unlocking an achievement:

Charmed

Drop down a hole and you'll find yourself in a previous part of the area. Retrace your steps, platform across the spikes, and take the upper path this time. At the top you can break a wooden shortcut barrier allowing you to progress. Head to the right and attack the giant door until it breaks. Drop off the ledge and make your way to the right to arrive in Dirtmouth, the games main town.

External image

Here you will find Elderbug and a bench, which you can use to heal, save, and equip charms. You might as well equip the Fury of the Falllen charm which grants a sizable damage increase when you have exactly one mask of health remaining. It's unlikely you'll take advantage of this, but since you have no other charms, there's no reason not to use it. There are four huts in Dirtmouth, none of which are currently open, and a locked door all the way to the right. This door requires a Simple Key which we do not have yet. Behind the door you can find Confessor Jiji, an NPC who can summon your Shade so you don't have to fight back to where you died.

Go right and drop down the well and into the Forgotten Crossroads. You can go left or right, but go left for now and drop down to kill a Husk enemy and smash a geo deposit. Kill the Crawlid and Tiktik and continue left into a large room filled with Gruzzers and Crawlids. There are numerous platforms and multiple exits in this room but just drop to the bottom and exit down through the opening in the floor.

You'll land on a ledge in the next screen and down to your right you'll see Cornifer, the cartographer. Interact with him and buy the Forgotten Crossroads map (1/13) for 30 geo. The map can be accessed in two ways- by holding LB to see the immediate area or through the inventory menu by pressing cn_back to access the world map. If you hold LB you'll see an outline of some of the areas in this region, apparently what Cornifer has explored himself:

External image

There are many areas that are not shown on the map and in order to be able to update the map, you'll need to visit these unexplored areas and you'll need to buy the Quill in Dirtmouth. More on that later. Plan on finding Cornifer in each area to buy his map.

Drop down and head to the right. In the next screen, jump up to find three geo deposits; smash them and collect the geo. You can break the wall to the right of the lone geo deposit to open a path that leads to another geo deposit. Drop down to the right, then go left into an open area and you will be locked in. You must kill three Aspid Hunters in order to open the exit gates. Take the bottom left exit to reach a dead end area with three geo deposits at the bottom, then return to the previous room and take the upper right exit to find a Hot Spring and bench. Rest at the bench, then return and take the lower right exit. As soon as you enter the next screen, drop down to kill a Husk enemy and smash a geo deposit, then continue along the main path. You'll see a ledge above that we can't reach yet, so instead make your way past the Goams. Carefully drop to another geo deposit and then take the right exit. This room has a few paths- take the upper right path and jump across two gaps to reach a ledge with a Goam and a geo deposit on the ceiling that you need to run in, whack, and run out to avoid being damaged. Go back and drop down the previous gap to reach the geo deposit, then drop down and make your way to the right exit.

The next room has a path leading up but instead take the lower right path. You'll have to kill an Aspid Hunter and a new enemy- an Aspid Mother which takes four hits to kill and spawns two Aspid Hatchlings upon death. Continue up/right to find a geo deposit, then backtrack and continue to the lower right area where you'll encounter a Leaping Husk and find a Soul Totem that can be attacked to add some soul to your meter. Exit right and continue until you see a room with a sleeping Gruz Mother:

External image

Once awakened, this enemy will float around the room and occasionally do a lunging attack that is easily avoided. It may also do a continuous bouncing attack from floor to ceiling. After hitting it a dozen or so times, it will die, drop 50 geo, and spawn several fairly harmless Gruzzers. Killing them opens the exits. Go right and drop down, then kill a few Husk enemies and head back left to find an open hut. Go inside and interact with Sly, who will relocate to Dirtmouth as a vendor. Exit and go left to break through a wooden shortcut barrier, then backtrack left. Take the upper exit in the room with the Aspid Hunter and immediately exit left to find a bench and a toll machine that can be activated for 50 geo:

External image

Pay 50 geo to unlock the Stag Station (1/11) and you can then ring a bell to summon the Last Stag. Have him take you to the Dirtmouth Stag Station (2/11) and ride the lift up, then hit the lever to open the door and exit left. The hut to the left of the bench is now open and inside you will find Sly. He sells a few different things but nothing of immediate interest. The hut to the right of the Stagway Station hut will also be open and inside you will fine Iselda, Cornifer's wife. Buy the Quill for 120 geo, which updates your map after visiting unmarked locations by resting at a bench, then take the Stag back to Forgotten Crossroads. Head out and up and you'll see exits to the left and to the right. Take the right exit to encounter a Husk Warrior which has a shield and will block your attacks. Bait his attacks (a triple slash) and counterattack. Kill a second and continue right. In this room you'll see a geo deposit behind some spikes and the path goes downward. Kill the three Aspid Mothers (and their spawned hatchlings), then take left exit to a room with some platforms. You need to pogo across the spikes to reach a platform with the a Grub (1/46):

External image

Break the jar and the grub will burrow into the ground and return to the Grubfather. There are 46 grubs scattered throughout the world and I will point each one out as we progress. Exit right and backtrack up and back to the left, through the room where the husk Warriors were. Once you reach the next screen, take the path upwards, kill some enemies, and hit a switch to open a path above. Go up, kill two Vengeflies, smash a geo deposit, then drop back down. Head through the right exit next to the switch into a dark area (for a map update), then immediately return and go down to break this wall, revealing a cave with a Grub (2/46):

External image

Then take the left exit right below you. From the upper platform with the lamp you can see a Husk Guard below. This is a strong enemy so I suggest just avoiding him. Make your way left past a few husks and exit left into the boss room. There is a closed gate on the left side so your only path is up/right. Follow the path back to the left and kill a couple more husks as you enter the boss area to begin the battle with False Knight.

This is a very basic boss battle. The False Knight will do a few different attacks that are easy to avoid:

  • A leap that will hurt you if he lands on you
  • A leaping overhead mace slam
  • An overhead mace slam that releases a slow traveling shockwave

Counterattack when you have an opening and after dealing sufficient damage, he will fall down and a maggot will pop out of his helmet. Attack the maggot until the knight gets back up (you can use some time to focus heal beforehand if needed). After he gets up, he will leap to the middle of the area and do a back and forth mace slam eight times that releases falling debris. You can attack the debris to send it flying towards the False Knight and if it hits him, it will deal damage. He will then go back to his normal attacks. Repeat this process until the knight eventually breaks the ground and falls to the level below, then jump down and attack the maggot to complete the encounter, unlocking an achievement:

Pick up the City Crest that the False Knight drops. Collect 200 geo from the chest on the left, then take the left exit. Follow some burning torches and you will reach a door that you can enter:

Rest on the bench, then interact with the Snail Shaman and collect the Vengeful Spirit spell, after which you will wake up in a locked area. Head right and you'll be told to tap B to cast Vengeful Spirit. Kill a husk, some Baldurs, and some Vengeflies as you make your way through a linear path (you'll have to break wooden barriers to progress). After a section with spikes below and platforms leading up/left, you'll drop down and fight another Baldur. Before dropping off to the right, break the wooden barrier on the left to find a Soul Totem. Follow the path to the left and you will kill several more Baldurs and drop into an area with two geo deposits and a Lifeblood Cocoon. Drop down and backtrack right, then drop down (break a barrier) into a room with an Elder Baldur who can only be damaged with Vengeful Spirit. You need to hit him with Vengeful Spirit four times, which requires that you gain some soul. The Elder Baldur will lob projectiles at you but will also occasionally shoot out normal Baldurs that you can kill to refill your soul meter. After killing the Elder Baldur, go left and jump over the gap and to find the Soul Catcher charm (2/40). Then drop down and talk to the Shaman so that you can leave. Rest at the bench and swap Fury of the Fallen for Soul Catcher, then exit left. Drop from the left side to reach a lever that will open the nearby door and exit left.

You'll find yourself back where you met Cornifer. Make your way up and all the way to the top of the large room with platforms and take the top left exit. Here you will meet the Grubfather:

External image

He will reward you for each grub you've freed (10 and 20 geo for the first two). Collect the geo, then exit right and continue to the right to get back to the well that leads up to Dirtmouth. Buy (and equip) the Wayward Compass charm (3/40) from Iselda, which marks your location on the map (and perhaps some map pins to indicate the location or benches/vendors/Stag Stations, but these are not necessary until geo is more abundant), then go back down the well to Forgotten Crossroads. Head right past the Temple of the Black Egg and fight through some Husks as you continue right. You'll reach a screen where you can go down or exit right; exit right and you'll find another Husk Guard. These guys are tough and hit hard. You want to bait his attack and counterattack. If he does an overhead club slam, jump back to avoid it, then arc your jump forward to land close enough to hit him once or twice. If he does the backwards hop to shockwave, jump over the shockwave and attack once or twice. After a dozen or so hits, he will die and drop 45 geo. You can then free the Grub he was guarding (3/46).

External image

Head back left , drop down to the bottom, and then exit right (for an eventual map update). We have no business here so return to the previous screen and take the lower left exit. Proceed left and you'll reach a room with a Grub on a ledge that you can't yet reach and a geo deposit further along. Exit left to the large room with platforms and enemies and take the exit from the ledge straight across:

External image

Defeat the Elder Baldur with Vengeful Spirit, continue left, and the scenery will change as you enter Greenpath (avoid falling into the acid water as you will take damage). You won't have access to the area map until you find Cornifer. Keep going left across platforms and you'll see a ledge above that is revealed as you walk into the darkness. Be careful as there is a slumbering enemy here. Dash across quickly to the geo deposit and a Fool Eater will pop out of the ground. You have to bait them to pop out, then attack them before they go back under and repeat. Exit left and you'll immediately notice some Maskflies on the path in front of you. Take a few steps towards them and shoot a Vengeful Spirit their way to kill them (should they fly away safely, leave and return to try again as you want to kill these enemies for eventual Hunter's Journal progress). Head up to the top level and rest at a bench, then smash the somewhat hidden geo deposit before exiting left. You will see Hornet for the first time but she is on an unreachable ledge:

External image

Drop down, hop across acid water to a platform and kill a Squit, then hop across to a geo deposit (attack this one slowly to try to prevent geo from falling into the acid). Backtrack and continue downward, jump across to a path on the right to get to a geo deposit, then exit right. Kill the Squit and chop vines so the attached blocks fall, with the last such block falling into a spiked floor. Keep going right and take the low path to find Cornifer. Buy the map of Greenpath (2/13) for 60 geo:

External image

Then go back left, hop across the platform in the spikes, and before going down hop over and chop another block/vine. Then drop down to the next screen. Follow the path around to the right where you can jump across a gap and cut another vine to make a block fall. From this ledge, continue right to meet the Hunter. Interact with him to receive his journal which will can be accessed via the inventory menu:

External image

When you first kill an enemy, their entry is added to the journal. You must kill most non-boss enemies multiple times to decipher the Hunter's notes. Here is the Squit entry, for example, showing that I need 19 more kills to decipher the Hunter's notes. We must unlock every enemy's entry AND decipher the Hunter's notes for each enemy, so make sure you are thorough in killing enemies as you progress.

Backtrack and drop to the block you cut down to illuminate an area on the left and see another block that can be cut down. Cut a third block to reach the bottom where you will find a a Grub (4/46), then platform back to the left. First make your way to a geo deposit on the left wall up above the exit. Use the soul totem to the right and then take the left exit. As soon as you enter, Hornet will appear and quickly dash away. Drop down and go right to reach a bench which will update your map. Retrace your steps left and up, continue to the left, and you'll eventually see a geo deposit on a lower ledge. Watch out for the Fool Eater, smash the geo deposit, and then exit left.

As you proceed left you will be attacked by a Moss Charger. Attack it once to reveal the small enemy within the green leafy covering, then shoot a Vengeful Spirit to get the kill (your nail is too weak to deal enough damage before the enemy gets away). You'll once again see Hornet before she flees. Take an upper exit and then go up one level to take a right exit , but immediately return to where you saw Hornet and exit left. You'll see her again on a ledge above:

External image

Follow her upwards to the next screen where you'll find a geo deposit and then a bench behind a locked door. Pay 50 geo at the toll machine and rest at the bench before continuing upward. Take a right exit to explore primarily for map update. You'll start in a room with several Husks and once you drop down you can't immediately jump back up. From the middle level you can jump across to the right (where you could climb back up to backtrack) and go right to reach a ledge with a Fool Eater and some geo deposits. You can drop down to another geo deposit under the acid pool, then exit left. There's nothing here so backtrack to the vertical section with the bench, then make your way around to the upper exit. Left is a dead end for now, so climb upwards to break this wall to find a Lifeblood Cocoon, then drop back up and down a level to continue right to see a slumbering Moss Knight:

External image

As you pass him he comes to life and a gate closes you in. I like to pogo on their heads until they die, which requires careful timing in order to avoid taking damage in the process. They can block upwards occasionally and require ~10 hits to kill. They also drop 40 geo, which is a nice chunk. Note that you can backtrack and drop down to the previous screen, then return to fight him again for another 40 geo. Additional respawns to farm more geo require resting at a bench which could be done most efficiently by quitting and reloading your save file.

After the Moss Knight, continue right and make your way up and around to a top exit. Go left and the scenery will shift to a more stone/grey appearance. In the second half of this large area you will hear someone muttering. Jump to the top platform to find a character being held in the jaws of an enemy:

External image

Attack them to initiate a battle with the Vengefly King. After defeating it, talk to Zote who is upset that you interfered in his affairs. Continue left and drop down to the screen below where you will see another Moss Knight patrolling a few levels down. Be careful here as a second is slumbering to the left and you don't want to engage them together. Jump across the small platforms to get to the far right and drop down the the level below where you can cut down a block on the right, opening a shortcut that will save you time in coming back from the bench should you die here. Go back and fight the patrolling Moss Knight on the right of the level he is on, then engage the second to the left by the three geo deposits. A third Moss Knight can be found by a locked door to the right (above the shortcut block). Defeat him to open the gate to a Grub (5/46), then go down and to the left and ignore the left exit, instead taking the down exit on the level below. Drop down and take the first left exit to reach a bench (save here) and a Stag Station (3/11) that can be unlocked for 140 geo. Then backtrack up a screen and take the left exit you were told to ignore.

Continue left until you reach a ledge where you will see Hornet below. Drop down to begin the battle with her.

This is another fairly simple boss battle. Hornet is a little more mobile than the False Knight was and will do a few different attacks:

  • jump into the air, then dive down with her needle
  • throw her needle horizontally, then pull it back
  • lunge forward with her needle along the ground
  • release a damaging area-of-effect around her body

After several hits she will stagger briefly, allowing you time to heal. Defeating Hornet will unlock an achievement:

You can then collect the Mothwing Cloak, which grants you the ability to dash forward with cn_RT:

External image

Try the dash to trigger a brief scene, then head left and follow the path around. Dash across some acid and jump over to a geo deposit, then drop down and go left, jumping and dashing across a long gap. Exit left and continue along until you reach the Lake of Unn where you will see a Moss Knight just past a building entrance. Go inside to find a bench (use it) and meet Quirrel:

External image

Talk to him a few times, then exit and backtrack to the area with the acid. Make your way across and then up to break a wooden shortcut barrier. Head right, then drop down and go left to rest at the bench by the Stag Station. Exit right, then make your way down. Stick left to find a geo deposit, then cut a vine to make the attached block fall. Hit a lever to open the path and continue downward, finding a geo cache at the bottom left before dropping down to the screen below. Dip left to an area that cannot yet be traversed (for a map update) and feel free to kill the Darunda to add it to your journal, then go back to the right. Continue to the right along the upper path until you reach this exit. Take the upper exit in this next area, then take the exit leading right into an unexplored area that requires the dash ability to get through. Carefully jump and dash past the pulsing electricity and thorns and you'll see an item on a ledge.

External image

This item is the Thorns of Agony charm (4/40). Cut the vine to make the attached block fall and backtrack left and down. From here, head to the right until you reach this point where you can exit down. Do so, then feel free to save at the bench to the right before making your way down towards the bottom of the area. Along the way you will encounter plant enemies called Gulka that shoot projectiles at you. You can attack the projectiles and knock them back towards these enemies to kill them. Ignore the left and right exits as you make your way down and drop into Fog Canyon. This area has two different passive jellyfish-like enemies: the smaller Uoma and the larger Ooma. Uoma can be killed without any problem but Ooma release their orange core after being killed that tracks you and explodes, so be careful. Stick to the right and make your way to the bottom, then exit to the right. Carefully make your way to the bottom and once again exit right (to the left is an NPC that will charge you 100 geo to store geo with her for safekeeping, but I wouldn't bother). Go right into Queen's Station and drop down a level to find Quirrel:

External image

Talk to him, then drop to the bottom and take the left exit to find a bench (use it) and a toll machine that can be activated for 120 geo. Doing so will unlock the Stag Station (4/11). You could return to Dirtmouth but there's really nothing immediately important there right now (other than NPCs Zote the Mighty and Tiso having shown up). Take the upper right exit from Queen's Station and you'll be in Fungal Wastes.

You'll encounter some new enemies in this area- Fungoons and Funglings. Head right and drop down when you can. In the screen below you will see a path heading left that leads to Cornifer. Buy the map of Fungal Wastes (3/13) for 75 geo:

External image

Backtrack back and up to the previous screen (pogo on the purple mushrooms to bounce high) and exit to the right just past another new enemy- Fungified Husk. The next area has Sporgs, new enemies that look like a patch of mushrooms and shoot a tracking spore that will explode and deal two masks of damage, so be careful as you make your way upwards. Break the geo deposit then exit right since the path upward is blocked. Head through this next section past several Shrumal Warriors who attack by either rolling towards you or jumping in an arc over you. Make your way up and left and you'll get to the other side of the barrier blocking your path in the previous section. Hit the lever to open the gate, then continue upwards for a mini boss battle against two Shrumal Ogres:

External image

You want to focus on the right one until it is defeated, then kill the other. They are immune to attacks from above so you need to attack them straight on when you have an opening. They drop 45 geo each and you receive a charm notch when both are defeated. Exit to the right and take the path leading upward. Platform up a few levels and you'll see a path leading to the right that leads to a bench and Leg Eater, a vendor:

External image

Leg Eater requires a donation of 86 geo before showing you what he has for sale. Hopefully you are being diligent with finding geo deposits and killing enemies for geo so you have plenty to work with (I had 1683 geo at this point). Give Leg Eater 86 geo and he will offer three Fragile charms for sale.

Charm NameEffectPurchase CostRepair Cost
Fragile HeartGives two additional health masks350 geo200 geo
Fragile GreedEnemies drop 20-60% more geo250 geo150 geo
Fragile StrengthIncreases nail damage by 50%600 geo350 geo

These charms are unique in that if you die with them equipped, they break and you must pay Leg Eater to repair them. Purchase Fragile Heart (5/40) and Fragile Strength (6/40) since they are two of the best charms in the game. If you do use Fragile charms, which I strongly recommend, be prepared to pause and quit to menu before dying to avoid the hassle of having to go all the way to Leg Eater and have them repaired. I suggest swapping Soul Catcher for Fragile Strength at the nearby bench. Backtrack left and down to the previous screen, then exit right, fight some mushroom enemies, and exit right again. Make your way down through the next screen, being very careful with the three Sporgs in the area (especially the first which is next to a geo deposit). Quickly exit left at the bottom.

Continue left through this next area and you will encounter Cloth, a friendly NPC:

External image

Keep going left and you'll see a geo deposit on a ledge that can be accessed by pogoing off the taller purple mushrooms, then dashing over. Use the other purple mushrooms to cross the acid pool and make your way down to the bottom. You'll see Hornet run away to the right- go the opposite way and exit down. You'll encounter two Amblooms on the same level as two geo deposits. Continue around and down, being careful as you pass a Sporg, and use some purple mushrooms to reach a left exit next to a Fungoon. In this next area, head upward by bouncing off of purple mushrooms and then go right (you can use Vengeful Spirit to kill the enemies in the path) to find to a Grub (6/46):

External image

Then go to the left side and find two geo deposits and a dark downward path that you can drop into to get back to the bottom, then go left to find another geo cache and a lever that opens a path to the left. Hit the lever, then go right back to the previous screen. Drop down to the bottom and exit to the right. As you go right through this section you will encounter Mantis Warriors that are best dealt with by pogoing them from above. You'll also see flying Mantis Youth. Make your way to the lower path and take the downward exit. Make your way all the way to the bottom of this screen, ignoring a left exit for now. There are a few geo deposits near the bottom and a bench at the bottom. Rest here, then go back up and take the left exit. Jump across a large platform and you'll arrive in Mantis Village:

External image

Take the lower path to the left, fighting several mantis enemies on your way. Hit the switch at the end to open a gate, then backtrack and take the upper path to the left. Fight past some more mantis enemies and jump across two gaps, then make your way up and around to a room with a bunch of hooks and a glowing item. Inspect the item to receive the Mantis Claw:

External image

The Mantis Claw allows you to jump off of walls. Start by making your way up to the two geo deposits above, then back around and down to the path you used to get here initially. Jump across a gap and go upward, then to the right and down to a geo deposit. Climb back up and around to the right to reach a section with spikes that you'll have to use wall jumps and dashes to get through. There's a geo deposit halfway through and you'll eventually reach a lever that opens the path way to another geo deposit and the path below. Be careful of the large gap to your left that has opened in the ground as you don't want to go down there yet. Backtrack to the right to the previous screen, then drop down and rest at the bench before taking the lower left exit.

You'll see an NPC off to the left in the next screen on the other side of a wall. Follow the path down to the bottom to find a statue with a glowing item and inspect it to receive the Dashmaster charm (7/40), then take a hidden path through the wall to your left:

External image

Kill the enemies and make your way up and through the spiked path using wall jumps and dashes. Remember that if you press towards a wall you will slide down slowly and you can dash the opposite direction even while pressing towards the wall. You will eventually reach Bretta who will thank you for rescuing her (she will relocate to Dirtmouth automatically). Step on the platform to her right to fall through, then retrace your steps back to the Mantis Village. Take the upper exit from the left side off this area to reach a new screen. Go to the right and climb the walls to reach a ledge with a Wanderer's Journal, then go down and make your way around to the upper right exit. Make your way up and through a top exit, then exit right to reach this area. You should see Hornet moving to the right as you enter.

This section has two switches that you need to reach to rebuild the long bridge over the acid. Jump and dash through the thorny path above to reach these switches. A soul totem can be found about halfway through in an alcove above. You will see a statue at the end that you can inspect:

External image

Do so to insert the City Crest, opening the way forward. This allows you one time passage through this door and into the City of Tears. Climb up and go left past some thorns to find a geo deposit, then return to the main path and exit right.

As soon as you enter the next screen you can see (and hear) a Belfly in the dimly lit upper right corner. They will attempt to kamikaze at you and explode when you get close enough, so dash past them to avoid damage. Continue right to encounter your first Husk Sentry who is best dispatched by pogoing from the top or baiting attacks before counterattacking, then follow the linear path to exit down. Fight your way to a lift which can be activated by attacking the lever between the arrows. Get to the lower level and you will find Quirrel resting on a bench.

External image

Talk to him, then rest here yourself before dropping to the screen below. Get the geo chest to the right of the lift and then take the lift to the bottom. Head left and fight enemies while you make your way across platforms until you reach the end, at which point you can jump up/right to reach the Nailsmith's Hut. Go inside and the Nailsmith will offer to upgrade your Nail for 250 geo. Have him do so, increasing the base nail damage from 5 to 9. Leave and backtrack one screen to the right, then take the elevator up and jump off to a nearby ledge. You will encounter a few husk enemies as you make your way upwards across platforms to reach the highest platform that has a Hallownest Seal. Then jump across to the right and take the upper right exit.

As soon as you enter this area you will be attacked by a Heavy Sentry. Use the nearby lift to go upward and you can move into darkened paths on the left (be careful of Belflys) to reach a geo chest and a Rancid Egg, which can be given to Confessor Jiji behind the locked door in Dirtmouth to summon your Shade if you die. After exploring this area, go back down and drop through the down exit to the screen below. Take the dark path on the right to find Relic Seeker Lemm:

External image

Interact with him to sell the Wanderer's Journal and Hallownest Seal, then go left and hit a switch to open a nearby door. Loot the geo chest, then climb back up the the previous screen above. Take the lift up and go left at the first stop. Follow the path past several enemies until you reach the top exit. Make your way to the top and hit a lever to open a nearby door, then drop down the now open path under the lever. You wall fall to the screen below where you can hit another lever that opens a few doors immediately below. Drop down a level and go right across the lift shaft and into an area that is now accessible. Drop down to hit a lever, then make your way up and through the top exit. Climb up and use the lift on the left to go up one level where you can kill a Winged Sentry and rescue a Grub (7/46).

Take the lift to the next level but be ready to fight a few enemies as soon as you go into the room to the left. Defeat them to unlock the doors, then take exit the leading up. Climb up to the platform on the right and you will see Cornifer and a toll machine that can unlock a bench for 150 geo. Unlock and rest at the bench, then interact with Cornifer to buy the City of Tears map (4/13) for 90 geo:

External image

Exit to the left and meet Zote the Mighty on your way through this area. Continue left into a large, open area with several platforms and enemies. Hit the lever to the left, then make your way up and into the top room on the right to find a Simple Key. There are four Simple Keys in the game and four doors that require a Simple Key to unlock. Sly sells one for 950 geo and the other three are found in the world. In this guide, I don't bother buying the one from Sly or unlocking the door to Confessor Jiji in Dirtmouth. If you feel that Confessor Jiji's services could benefit you, buy the Simple Key from Sly and unlock the door at your convenience.

Go across the platforms to get to the upward exit in the upper left. Upon entering the next screen you should see a glowing object to the left, so go around and grab it (it's a Wanderer's Journal). Then go back to the right and you'll see a chain that you can hit to make the bundled objects fall to the ground below. Do so, then take the nearby path to the right and pay 200 geo at the toll machine to unlock the Stag Station (5/11) which will unlock an achievement:

Now it's time to revisit some areas with our new abilities to do things we couldn't do previously. Start by having the Stag take you to Dirtmouth. Buy a Mask Shard (1/16) from Sly for 150 geo (we will eventually buy everything he has for sale but for now, geo is at a premium so there's no hurry to buy all of his stuff). Go into Bretta's hut on the right to find another Mask Shard (2/16), then go down the well and make your way left towards the Grubfather. He will reward you for the Grubs you've found, including a Mask Shard (3/16). Head back towards to Dirtmouth but once you reach the well, climb up the shaft rather than using the "Ascend" option to reach a path above with a Hallownest Seal. Return to Dirtmouth and go to to the Stag Station to have the Stag take you to Queen's Station. Go all the way to the right and make your way through a thorned path by climbing and dashing to reach another Mask Shard (4/16), granting you a permanent health upgrade and unlocking an achievement:

Hit the lever to open the nearby door, then return to the Stag Station and have the Stag take you back to City Storerooms. Go left until you reach a toll machine that can summon a large lift for 150 geo, then take the lift up. At the top, exit left and follow the path past several enemies until you see a path leading down with spikes on either side. Carefully drop down, kill the enemies below, and continue to find a Vessel Fragment (1/9). Backtrack, breaking a wooden shortcut barrier, and continue right past the large lift. Back in Forgotten Crossroads, continue right through areas that we've been in before until you reach the room where we fought a Gruz Mother much earlier. Beyond this room is a hut (and a bench) that can now be reached. Go inside to meet Salubra, an NPC focused on charms:

External image

I had 1709 geo at this point. You definitely want to buy a charm notch for 150 geo, but you need 10 charms to be able to buy the second. Assuming you have at least 1290 geo, buy three charms: Longnail for 300 (8/40), Steady Body for 120 (9/40), and Shaman Stone for 220 (10/40), allowing you to buy the second charm notch for 500 geo. With two new notches available, it's up to you what charms you want to use. The two extra health from Fragile Heart is a big benefit as is the additional range from Longnail, so use whatever you prefer. Backtrack to the left until you reach a path going upwards and do so to get to the nearby Forgotten Crossroads Stag Station (Tiso may be resting on the bench here). Ring the bell and have the Stag take you to back to City Storerooms. From here, head to this unexplored area:

External image

When you get into this new area you will be attacked by a Soul Twister which will teleport around and launch projectiles at you. The aren't bad by themselves but can be overwhelming in numbers. Defeat it, then take the up exit into the Soul Sanctum. Head left to find a lift; ride it up and you'll see a breakable wall on the left that can be broken to create a shortcut to a bench (you'll probably still hear Cornifer singing). Backtrack to where we entered the Soul Sanctum and take the right path to a lift. You can hop off right to the first ledge that leads to a breakable item which grants some soul. Take the lift to the top and go left (right is blocked for now) and before the next lift, go up and fight past some enemies to reach a switch that must be triggered to open the way forward. Take the lift on the left (or climb the lift shaft) to reach the top level and enter a room to trigger a mini boss encounter: Soul Warrior. He has three different attacks: a lunging slash, a teleporting dropping attack, and a semi-tracking projectile. Defeat him, collect the 200 geo he drops, and continue right.

Drop down to the bottom and exit left to reach a switch that opens the nearby door allowing easier access to this part of the area, then backtrack and make your way up. Follow this linear path, hit a switch then take the lift up. Continue along past a few more enemies and exit left. This room can be dangerous because there are several Soul Twisters that you want to try to kill one at a time. As soon as one spawns in, try to make no forward progress in the area to prevent the next from appearing. You will notice a locked door and a switch on the other side- make your way down and around to get to this switch and open the door. You may also notice glowing sections of floor in this area- we will soon acquire an ability to smash through these. After hitting the switch, head left, but before exiting climb up here and follow the path past several enemies to find the Spell Twister charm (11/40). Backtrack and exit left and prepare for a Boss Battle.

Drop down, smash three soul items, and head left to begin the battle with the Soul Master.

Another fairly easy boss with two phases. None of his attacks are that fast or dangerous: he will teleport around the area and shoot slow semi-tracking projectiles, do a slow horizontal dash across the screen, summon rotating orbs and float across the screen, and teleport to slam from above, releasing shockwaves. After dealing enough damage he will deflate which is a good time to heal. Hit him to continue the battle. His first phase will end with him exploding around the area. Collect the item that appears and he will then smash through the floor, causing you to drop to the area below. Dash away from his downward slams and when he finally appears, attack him several times while avoiding projectiles until he is defeated, unlocking an achievement:

You will now acquire Desolate Dive, a spell that does a downward slam by pressing cn_down + cn_B:

Our immediate goal is to exit this area and get back to Dirtmouth with 1800 geo to buy the Lumafly Lantern from Sly which is needed for the next area, Crystal Peak. The first destination is Relic Seeker Lemm to sell 1100 geo worth of relics. The second destination is the City Storerooms Stag Station:

External image

Exit left and go past the breakable floor and make your way up to find a Soul Totem and a geo chest that contains 380 geo. It's time to use our new ability on the glowing floor sections. Stand on the one a few levels below the geo chest and use Desolate Dive to break through and land on the ground below. Kill a few ghostly enemies, hit the lever to the left, and Desolate Dive through the nearby glowing floor section. You will break through several sections and land below. Climb up one level to find a Hallownest Seal, then go up another level for a Soul Totem. Use Desolate Dive on the shaky floor section to the right of the Soul Totem to break through and fall to an area below, passing a Grub on the way down. Kill the ghostly enemies at the bottom and make your way up some platforms to reach a lever; hit it, then make your way back to where you broke through the shaky floor section so you can drop down to rescue a Grub (8/46). Then drop down and make your way up along the right wall and exit right. Continue along to find a Soul Totem, then exit right again.

Climb up to get to a glowing glass section and Desolate Dive on it, then go right to Desolate Dive another glowing section. You'll end up in the room where we fought the Soul Warrior. I'll leave it up to you to find your way down to Relic Seeker Lemm to sell 1 Wanderer's Journal and 2 Hallownest seals for 1100 total geo, then make your way to the City Storerooms Stag Station and have the Stag take you to Dirtmouth (both locations marked on the map above). Buy the Lumafly Lantern from Sly for 1800 geo (I had 2676 at this point), then drop down the well into Forgotten Crossroads and make your way right to get to this section of the map:

External image

After taking the lift up to reach the marked section above, exit right and notice that the ground shakes when you stand on it. Desolate Dive on this shaky ground to break through, landing in Crystal Peak, and take the down exit. You will see a Glimback patrolling below which can only be damaged from the front. To the right you will see some conveyors and a pink geo deposit at the bottom. Make your way across the conveyors to reach the other side and drop down to kill a Husk Miner, then continue right into a dark area that is somewhat illuminated by the Lumafly Lantern. There is a bench on the far right:

External image

Save at the bench, then backtrack left to the previous screen and start working your way up. Kill another Husk Miner and break a geo deposit, then take an exit up. Climb up the left side, noting conveyors along the walls that you can ride vertically. Jump on to this conveyor near the spikes and follow the path around to get to a Grub (9/46), then hit the lever to open the nearby door so you can continue upward. You will encounter Crystal Crawlers in this section that are immune to nail damage and can only be killed with spells. Smash the geo deposit, then make your way around and up to a Husk Miner. Kill him, then break the wall to his left before continuing upward (we need an upgrade before going through the broken wall). Go up a level and exit right to reach an area with slamming pistons. Carefully make your way past the first three pistons, then climb up and make your way around and up to get to a Grub (10/46). Hit the nearby lever to stop the pistons and open a path down, then return left to the previous screen.

Carefully make your way past several Crystal Crawlers to the top of this screen and take the left exit to find Cornifer. Interact wth him to buy the Crystal Peak map (5/13) for 112 geo:

External image

We cannot go left or reach the ledge above without additional upgrades, so backtrack right and take the exit up. There are many enemies in this area, including Shardmites, a new enemy that patrols vertical surfaces. Make your way up the central vertical path to find the Shopkeeper's Key (which expands Sly's inventory in Dirtmouth), then drop down and exit right. Attack the figure sitting on the bench to begin the battle with the Crystal Guardian.

This boss has a few different attacks:

  • he will jump around the room
  • he will shoot his laser at you- simply jump over it
  • he will let out a yell that calls down several laser beams that you need to avoid

This simple boss shouldn't pose much of a challenge. Defeat him and collect the 385 geo he drops, then rest at the bench before backtracking to the previous room. Make your up and take the exit at the top. Talk to Quirrel on the left side of this area, then go right and exit to the next area. Drop down the opening in the floor and collect a Wanderer's Journal on the right side before using Desolate Dive on a weak floor section on the left side. Carefully dispatch the two Crystal Hunters, then break the geo deposits and attack the Bluggsac to receive a Rancid Egg. Climb out and head down the central shaft to reach a lever; hit it to open the downward path on the left. Drop down to hit another lever, then backtrack to the first lever.

Drop down the path top the right of the lever and make your way to the bottom. Hit the lever on your left to open the gate, then go through back the exit to the right. This next section tasks you with making your way across conveyors and platforms that rotate after stepping on them:

External image

You'll find a Soul Totem behind a wooden shortcut barrier about halfway through, after which you'll have to avoid lasers to progress. Continue past these hazards (and another Soul Totem) and you'll eventually drop down to a final platform; continue right and interact with a machine emitting a glowing purple light to receive the Crystal Heart:

External image

This upgrade allows you to use cn_LT on a wall or on the ground to do a horizontal super dash that continues until you either choose to stop or hit something. So face left and hold cn_LT, then release to super dash across the long gap. Do this a second time from the next platform to cross a long gasp, then break the geo deposit and proceed left. Just before the exit, climb the wall above and position yourself so you can super dash to reach the Grub on the right (11/46). Then drop down and exit left. Climb up the shaft and exit left (on the level with a lever) to rest at the bench and update your map. Exit left and go back to the place where we broke a wall near a Husk Miner (which will be the lower of two paths going left on your map).

You need to make four super dashes in this area, starting here. The first requires no special timing. The second requires timing it so you dont hit any lasers. You must then carefully jump and dash over some crystals and make the third and fourth super dashes, which again require timing to avoid the lasers. Once you reach the end, exit left into a very crystalline area and drop down to find the Deep Focus charm (12/40):

External image

Backtrack to two screens to the vertical area, then make your way up and through the room with several Crystal Crawlers and exit left to the room where we met Cornifer a while back. Super dash to the left and you will fly into the next screen, eventually hitting a wall. Jump to safety to the right and super dash several more times to keep progressing to the left. You can cancel a super dash by pressing cn_A mid-flight; do so to land on this platform. Drop into the hole in the ground and make your way around, killing two Crystal Hunters and breaking a geo deposit before dropping down to release the grub on the lower level. It turns out that this is actually a grub mimic, so kill it, then break the wall to the right and make your way to the real Grub (12/46). Return to the screen above, then super dash to the left to reach a lift. Hit the nearby switch, allowing you to use this lift to get to and from Dirtmouth.

Backtrack to the right until you reach the vertical area. Make your way down past several Crystal Crawlers and take the exit to your right. Go past the dormant pistons and exit right again, then take the down exit. Make your way down until you reach an opening on the left; climb up here and make your way through this enclosed section, killing several enemies and breaking some geo deposits. Hit the lever at the top to open that path back to the vertical shaft. Drop down to the bottom and go right through a path with pistons. Rather than dropping down at the bottom, continue past some more pistons to reach a geo chest, hit the lever to turn the pistons off, and then return to the bottom and exit downward.

As soon as you land, rescue a Grub (13/46), then hit the lever on the right. Work your way down through this area, killing enemies and breaking geo deposits on the way. You can exit left at the bottom and rest at the bench immediately below you, then go back to the previous screen and up to take a right exit into an area that you haven't yet been to. Make your way through this partially-lit section (I suggest just avoiding the enemies) and exit right. You can super dash across the gap to reach the Crystallized Mound, an area with some tricky platforming where you can acquire Descending Dark, an upgrade for Desolate Dive (and rescue a Grub).

Use Desolate Dive to break through the shaky ground, then break a wooden shortcut barrier at the bottom and jump/dash across several rotating platforms (ignoring the Crystal Hunters) to reach a central solid platform. Continue over several more rotating platforms, moving quickly and ignoring the Crystal Hunter until you reach solid ground. Kill the two enemies and continue upward, branching right to reach a Grub (14/46). Drop down, then make your way up and to the left and drop into a room to find a Shaman encased in crystal. Break the crystal to receive the Descending Dark upgrade:

External image

Dash across the gap to the left to exit, then go left and drop through the gap, landing in a new area. Head right and interact with the Dreamers statue to trigger a brief scene, after which you will regain control in a new area. Follow a moth to the right until you reach a platform where you can interact with the moth, then interact with the item it leaves behind to receive the Dream Nail:

External image

You will wake up in the Seer's hut. Talk to her and she will briefly explain essence, which can be extracted with the Dream Nail. We will return to her after collecting essence to receive various rewards. Exit right into the Resting Grounds and approach the Whispering Root to be prompted to use the Dream Nail. Do so by holding cn_Y and essence will be released through the immediate area. This particular Whispering Root releases 20 essence, so make your way around the area to collect them, after which a minor animation will occur indicating that you collected them all.

You may notice a slight glow on this platform, indicating that you can go through the wall to the left and collect the Dreamshield charm (14/40). Exit, then go across to the right to find a Stag Station and bench (and a note thast you missed Cornifer?). Hit the lever and have the Stag take you to Dirtmouth. Buy the Resting Grounds map (6/11) from Iselda for 75 geo, then talk to Sly to return the Shopkeeper's Key and expand his inventory. Buy a Mask Shard (5/16) from him for 500 geo, then let's go collect three more for a health upgrade before moving on. Start by taking the Stag to Greenpath. We will be visiting three previously unexplored areas while we're here:

External image

Leave the Stag Station and head all the way down, exiting at the bottom (friendly reminder to continue killing enemies along your path for Hunter's Journal progress and geo). Drop down a level and exit left, arriving back on this ledge. Super dash to the left and you will hit a wall, jump off and dash over the spikes at the top to land on the other side of the wall, then super dash left again and repeat. You will eventually reach a solid ledge. Drop off to the left and dash/jump to get to the next ledge. From here you need to pogo across Durandas to get to the other side (remember you can dash after each pogo). Super dash from this last ledge to reach the end and exit left. Make your way across platforms to the left and you can loot a Rancid Egg in the bottom left corner. Continue up/right to get to this ledge, then super dash to the right, stopping your dash before you hit spikes. Rest at the bench, then enter the hut to find Nailmaster Sheo inside. Interact with him to learn the Great Slash nail art:

External image

Leave the hut, drop off to the right, and exit right. Climb up to a path above and super dash to traverse this area quickly. Cut a vine attached to a block at the end, then drop down and exit right. Refer to the map and head right towards destination #2, picking up this Hallownest Seal on the way by super dashing from the ledge to the right (falling into the acid will return you to the level above). Rest at the bench near your destination, then proceed to the path marked #2, which is a dark area that is slightly illuminated by the Lumafly Lantern. Continue right across some spikes and past several enemies and you will reach the Stone Sanctuary entrance. Go inside and head up/right to reach a room large room. Follow the upper right path around and when you drop down, go right. Cross the gap and exit right and you will find a Mask Shard (6/16). Grab it, then return left and drop down through a gap. Continue left past the grave of No Eyes, one of seven Dream Warriors. Dream Warrior battles are activated by hitting them with the Dream Nail, but this battle is considerably easier once you have an upgrade that grants invincibility during your dash, more health, and stronger attacks, so I suggest coming back for this battle later.

Exit the Stone Sanctuary and make your way to destination #3. You'll start in an open area- drop down to the platform below and go left for a mini boss battle with the Massive Moss Charger. This boss will charge you, then burrow underground and either charge you again or jump over you. Defeat it, collect the 300 geo it drops, and continue left. Break a geo deposit and exit left, then follow the path up and around to eventually reach two geo deposits. Break them then exit left. Jump/dash and pogo left through this area to reach a geo chest. Then pogo across two Darunda and jump up to a platform with a Grub (15/46). Continue left to get to this platform, then cut the vine before climbing up to find a Vessel Fragment (2/9):

External image

Go right to cut a vine and open a path downward, then backtrack right to the previous screen. Make your way around to the right exit, then head right and exit into a screen with a bottom exit to Fog Canyon. Once in Fog Canyon, make your way all the way down, then exit right. Make make your way to the bottom and exit right again to Queen's Station, then go to the Stag Station and have the Stag take you to the Forgotten Crossroads. We have five destinations in this area:

External image

Start by dropping down a level and heading left until you get to this point where you can use the Mantis Claw to reach the area above. Follow the path past numerous Goams and you will eventually reach a Mask Shard (7/16). Break the shortcut on your right, drop down, and continue left towards destination #2. You can jump and dash to reach this ledge, then make your way down and jump across a gap to exit right. Use Desolate Dive on this weak section of ground and you will land in an area below where you can inspect a Fossilized Gaom to add its entry to the Hunter's Journal. Go right, smash some geo deposits, and climb out to then backtrack and make your way up to destination #3.

Break open this door to access the area and head left past some spikes and enemies (and a Soul Totem above) to reach a path with sections of spikes on the walls. Carefully jump through this section and exit left, then follow a linear path where you break through a weak floor and land in the area below. There is a boss to the right, but you can climb up to the left to find a Soul Totem if you need to heal first. Exit right and be prepared for a battle to begin once you pass this threshold.

(I realized after the battle that I did not have Fragile Strength equipped so if you, this enemy should die much more quickly)

The Brooding Mawlek has a few different attacks: it will spit out orange blobs, it will slash at you with a melee attack, it will vomit out a large mass of orange blobs, and it will jump around the area. This boss can be tough as there is little time to heal in between attacks. You may consider running up to rest at the bench in Dirtmouth first, this way you can quit to menu and continue from there if if you get low on health and don't want to risk dying.

After the Brooding Mawlek is defeated, collect the Mask Shard (8/16) that appears to gain a permanent health upgrade. Then break the wooden shortcut barrier to the right and make your way up to the top of the screen above towards destination #4. From the upper right platform, jump onto this wall and attack the ceiling to break open a path to an area above. Smash the geo deposits, then go left to find a Whispering Root. Hit it with the Dream Nail, then collect the 29 essence in the area. Finally, pay a visit to Grubfather to receive your rewards for the grubs you have rescued, which should be 570 total geo and the Grubsong charm (14/40). Head up to Dirtmouth and buy a Vessel Fragment (3/9) from Sly for 550 geo, which provides a permanent soul upgrade and unlocks an achievement:

After you are done here, have the Stag take you to City Storerooms.

Exit the Stag Station, then take the down exit to a large area with numerous platforms and enemies. Take a minute to clear out the enemies, then make your way to a room on the right with a Whispering Root. Hit it with the Dream Nail and collect the 28 essence in the area. Drop down and exit right, then make your way across and then down to reach Relic Seeker Lemm and sell him your two relics for 650 geo. Then take the lift on the left down and use the Simple Key in the nearby device to open a path on your right. Drop down to reach the Royal Waterways:

External image

Head left and kill two Pilflips. There is a Soul Totem on a ledge above but beware the Belfly. Drop down on the left and exit left. Drop down to land on a section of weak floor that you can Desolate Dive through. Do so to land on a bench and rest. Climb back up and go left (beware another Belfly) into an open area. Drop into the water and make your way to the left, passing several Hwurmps on the way. You can find a Rancid Egg on a platform above. Exit left and continue through water. You will encounter Flukefeys as you progress and you will eventually reach a ledge with a Mask Shard (9/16). Backtrack to the previous screen and head right until you reach the starting platform. Break this weak spot on the wall which leads to a Grub (16/46):

External image

Climb back onto the platform above and jump across the platforms leading left to reach an upper path. You will encounter a Flukemon who break into two hostile pieces when killed, the second of which comes alive several seconds later. Exit left, then take the upper path past several enemies (beware another Belfly) and you will find another Rancid Egg. Find a Soul Totem to the left, then drop down and exit left. You will find yourself closed into a room with several Hwurmps. Kill them to open the gates, then go left and climb up to find Cornifer. Interact with him to purchase the Royal Waterways map (7/13) for 75 geo:

External image

Drop down and hit the nearby lever to open a shortcut, then backtrack and exit right. Make your way to the right until you get back to the area where you used Desolate Dive to get to a bench. Drop down to the bench, rest, then drop off to the left to find another weak floor section. Use Desolate Dive here to reach the area below. You need to make your way past numerous enemies to the right and into a pit with several enemies. Continue right then drop down (find a Soul Totem on the right at the bottom), then continue to the left through a maggot filled path. Break open a path on this wall, but before going through, go up to find a geo deposit, then return to the lower path and exit left. Here you will find Flukemarm, an optional boss:

External image

Flukemarm is passive until you attack it, at which point it will simply spawn two Flukefeys at a time randomly from its orifices. Stand on the lower left ledge, jump and attack the boss, and kill the Flukefeys when they come at you. After defeating Flukemarm, take the Flukenest charm (15/40) from the upper left ledge. Make your way back to the previous screen, then climb up on the left to get to this platform. Break the wooden shortcut barrier on the right, but note that you can also break the ceiling up on the left (don't go up that way, though). Go right, jump across a gap, then go up/left and exit up. Climb the wall on the left to get back to the bench and rest. Go directly to the right to find a Rancid Egg. Backtrack and go to the upper path, heading right. Cross over a small gap and continue right to reach this open area where you will hear some strange gibberish. Climb up and exit at the top. You will hear more gibberish as you enter the next section. Make your way up, around, down, and then to the right and be prepared to fight the Dung Defender in the area ahead.

This boss has a lot of health and does a few different attacks that are easy to avoid: he dives into and out of the ground as if it was water, he throws two dung balls that bounce around the area (and sometimes curls into a ball and bounces around himself), he dives into the ground and moves back and forth in a visible mound of dirt before bursting up into the air and releasing four dung balls, and he does a shout that sends him into a frenzy where he does faster burst attacks out of the ground. After taking several hits, he will stagger and fall to the ground for a few seconds. Avoid his attacks and put damage on him when you can. Defeat him to unlock an achievement:

After the battle, collect the Defender's Crest charm (16/40), then go to the right and hit a lever to activate a pump, allowing you to progress. Break the wooden shortcut barrier on the right, then backtrack to the left to the previous screen. Make your way around and down, then to the left to exit here. Make your way through this linear path to the left, then down some small platforms above acid water, and then go to the right until you reach a ledge with some pink crystals. Super dash to the right and you will go through a couple of screens and eventually crash into a wall. Quickly jump to the wall on the left with more pink crystals, indicating that you should again super dash to the right. When you hit the wall, jump up to the platform above and make your way across some platforms over acid water. There will be a Rancid Egg in a path to the left (beware the Belfly), then continue up and take the path to the right. Drop down and exit right, taking the first path up (going straight leads to a dead end with two Belflys). Go right at the top and drop down either downward path to reach a large room that will seal you in, forcing you to fight through several husk enemies. Head right after they are defeated, follow the linear path, and drop down to a platform below in a gaseous area. Jump across platforms to the right to find Isma's Tear:

External image

You can now swim through acid water. Drop off to the left and then swim to the right. Climb up to find a Grub (17/46), then continue upwards and head left at the top. Swim through some acid water, jump across the two gaps, drop down, and exit left. Make your way to the left and up and follow the linear path to eventually reach a ledge with an entrance. Go in and climb, then go left at the top to find Eternal Emilitia and use the lever to open an access point to the City of Tears. Exit this room and you will immediately see a Great Husk Sentry to on the left. These guys are tough and require many hits to kill. And they hit for two masks of damage. I find it's best to kill them by pogoing on their head, trying to angle your bounce up and away from their overhead attacks, but it's probably best to leave this guy alone for now and go left, taking the left exit on the upper path. Continue past a few new husk enemies and exit left and you can use a lever to open the nearby door. Continue left to trigger a scene with Hornet in front of the fountain. You can then inspect the fountain for lore on Hollow Knight:

External image

Head back to the right a few screens and past Emilitia's door. Exit right into King's Station. Go to the bottom right where you can climb up from here to reach a geo deposit behind a locked door. Then go two levels up and exit right to find bench and a toll machine. Pay 300 geo to unlock the King's Station Stag Station (7/11), then go back left and down to the bottom right to find a broken bench and a non-functioning Stag Station. Jump into the water and swim through the wall to the right to reach a new area. Be careful of the Belflys here and go around to get to a Grub (18/46). Exit right to reach Kingdom's Edge. Kill the docile Boofly, then make your way down along the left wall. Enter this hard to see path to find Cornifer and buy the Kingdom's Edge map (8/13) for 112 geo:

External image

Climb up and exit left to return to King's Station; we will come back here later. Continue straight to the left, past Emilitia's door and exit left via the lower path when there is an option. You'll find yourself in a long vertical area and your goal is to get to the bottom. About halfway down you will find spikes all around the area (ignore the geo deposits for now), so be careful as you proceed. Remember to use cn_RSd to expand your downward view so you can better see where you are going. Once you reach the bottom, use the Dream Nail on the Whispering Root in a room to the right, then carefully collect the 35 essence in the area (three of which are right by the geo deposits I told you to ignore). Then make your way back to the bottom and exit left.

Proceed with caution through this area as there are numerous flying husk enemies and platforms across a living spiked floor. Start by dropping onto the broken column to the left of the initial platform. Slide down the right side and use super dash near the bottom to fly to the right and reach an area with a Wanderer's Journal. Super dash back, then make your way to the left. I suggest trying to kite enemies one at a time so you don't get overwhelmed as you work your way across the broken columns to the other side of the area. Once you reach solid ground you can slide down a wall to reach a lower area with two geo deposits. Climb back up and take the top path to the right for another geo deposit. Then proceed to the left and down to reach an exit down. This is a Tram Station but we don't have the Tram Pass so we can't travel horizontally to other stations. Drop into the nearby glowing opening and jump over to the platform on the left to be welcomed to Ancient Basin:

External image

Take the downward path on the right and continue down past a glowing door to reach this ledge to find Cornifer. Interact with him and buy the Ancient Basin map (9/13) for 112 geo:

External image

Climb back up to the Tram Station and go to the left side to find a down exit. Drop in, go left, and you will encounter a Lesser Mawlek. Drop down to find a shaky piece of ground and use Desolate Dive to break through. Kill the Lesser Mawlek to the right and rescue a Grub (19/46), then climb out and continue to the left. Jump across a gap to reach an area with a few enemies. Kill them and you will meet Cloth again. Interact with her, then return to the right and drop down. Follow the path and drop down to an area with teo Lesser Mawleks- one on each side. Kill them, then go left to find a Pale Ore. Drop off to the left and make your way through the lower path, but be careful as there are numerous Belflys here. Break the wooden shortcut barrier at the end, then climb up and make your way to the exit in the upper right.

Back at the Tram Station, take the up exit and work your way to the right back into the tall vertical area. Climb to the top and once you get back to the City of Tears, take the left exit and go all the way to the left to get to the Nailsmith's hut. Give him 1 Pale Ore and 800 geo to upgrade your nail, raising the base damage from 9 to 13. Now make your way up to the exit to Fungal Wastes:

External image

This is where you may remember using the City Crest a while back to get into the City of Tears, but the door closed behind you. Climb up the wall on the right and use Desolate Dive on this weak floor section to open the way. Make your way to the following destinations in Fungal Wastes:

External image

Start by dropping down to arrive here, then make your way to the left and take the exit. Use the purple mushrooms to bounce up to a platform on the left with a Grub (20/46), then drop down and to the left to reach a lower area to find the Spore Shroom charm (17/40). Climb up on the right and break the wooden shortcut barrier so you can backtrack right and make your way over and down to the bench. After resting at the bench, go to destination #3 in Mantis Village by dropping down to the area below. You'll have to make your way around this area to hit several levers before dropping down where you can challenge the Mantis Lords.

This is a battle against three enemies, first against one and then against two together. They have three different attacks: a plunging attack from directly above, a horizontal dashing attack, and jumping on the side wall to throw an boomeranging projectile. Things can get a little hectic when engaging the final two together. Avoid their attacks and counterattack when you can and when they are defeated, an achievement will unlock:

Go all the way to the right to rest at a bench, then work your way around to the lower chest for the Mark of Pride charm (18/40) and the upper chest for a Hallownest Seal. Drop off to the right to find a path to a room with a chest containing 620 geo, then drop down and exit left. Drop back to the Mantis lord area and exit left into Deepnest. Follow the path to the left and climb up when you can to find Cornifer at the top. Interact with him to buy the Deepnest map (10/13) for 38 geo:

External image

Backtrack and find a geo deposit down the right path on your way down. Continue left and find two geo deposits before exiting through the top. Follow a Garpede on the right up to two geo deposits, then climb up the path on the left and a Dirtcarver will climb out of the ground. Break a geo chest below you, drop down, and follow the path to the left. You will encounter a Deephunter in the next small area which has a collapsing section of floor in the middle. Drop down and work your way around to a geo deposit before climbing up to where the floor collapsed. Go up from here and follow the path around to another floor section that will collapse. Drop off to the left and make your way down to a left exit.

Drop down to the screen below and go left. Drop down and follow the path to the left and down into a narrow area with collapsing floor sections. Follow a Garpede to the right to find another collapsing floor, then continue along this path for a short way until you reach this ledge. Drop down to land in a Hot Spring by a bench. Rest at the bench, then exit left. Climb up to this platform, super dash to the left, and you will land on a small platform next to a breakable wall. Break the wall and continue left. Drop to a platform with a Grub (21/46), then climb up to a small ledge on the left next to another breakable wall. Follow the path and you will see a clone of yourself below. Continue along this linear path, smash a geo deposit in a short left offshoot, and drop down to another geo deposit with a breakable wall to the left. The path will branch down to another geo deposit. Continue forward and the path will fork- you can climb upward to break a wooden shortcut barrier, then drop back down to continue along the lower path. Exit right and continue forward. Barriers will come down behind you as you approach the area ahead to battle Nosk.

Nosk is fast and erratic. You want to use the terrain to your advantage as engaging him in the open does not work. He has a few attacks: he will charge from one side of the area to the other, he will jump around a few times, he will spit out orange globs, and he will jump into the ceiling, rain orange blobs down, then plunge down from above (a cloud of dust in the ceiling marks his location).

The safest places are to the immediate left or right of the central platform, particularly for healing. While standing in either spot, Nosk will go right over top of you as he charges your direction from the central platform. Try to hit him a few times (up and then to the side) when he does go over top of you. After defeating Nosk, proceed right to obtain a Pale Ore, then backtrack to the shortcut and exit the area to the right. Get back to the ledge you used super dash on earlier and work your way up through this area. Ignore a left exit as you make your way upwards and you will eventually see a grub in the upper left. Super dash to the left and climb up to rescue the Grub (22/46), then super dash back, smash a geo deposit in the upper right corner, and exit up. As soon as you enter the next area you will hear Zote, who is trapped again. Climb up on the right side and you will see him on the other side of a wall to the left. We have to go around a different way to get to him, so just continue up and take the exit at the top. You will see signs pointing towards a bench, so make your way upwards to find a bench at the top. Rest here, then go left into the Failed Tramway:

External image

Upon entering this area you will encounter a Carver Hatcher. Make your way to the left and you will see a locked door; go up for a lifeblood Cocoon and then return to go down a dark path where you can hit a lever to progress to the left. Make your way to the left in this area and you will reach a broken down tram car that you can enter from the top to find the Tram Pass. Return to the right to find a lever on an upper ledge that will open the door, allowing you to exit right. Head back to the bench and rest, then drop down a few levels and make your way to a down exit on the left. Drop into a room where you will be sealed in and attacked by several Corpse Creepers. Drop down after the way opens and go right to find Zote. Cut him down and he will again be ungrateful. Go left to trigger a collapsing floor section and find a King's Idol to the left of it, then make your way back towards the bench to the right of the Failed Tramway. A section of floor will collapse to the right of this sign, allowing you to exit to the right.

Make your way up past several Garpedes and take the exit at the top. Follow the path to the right and up, then back to the left and up again and finally back to the right and across a gap. Drop down and exit right. Go to the right side of this room and break the wall just above you. Exit right and drop down to find a Grub that is actually a Grub Mimic. There are three more grubs ahead, so break all three jars. The first and third are Grub Mimics and the second is an actual Grub (23/46), and after you rescue it you will unlock an achievement:

Exit to the left, then make your way up to the top and exit left again to reach a wooden shortcut barrier. Continue left and make your way up to find another wooden shortcut barrier and some geo deposits, then backtrack all the way back down to the bench by the Hot Spring (you should see Quirrel here). Go right from the bench into a room with several Garpedes. Follow the first Garepede to the right, then quickly jump to the level above the Garpede going from left to right. Drop down and exit to the right to reach a tram station. Inspect the door and insert the Tram Pass to activate the tram system. Inside the tram is a bench and a control on the right that can be used to have the tram take you to the next tram station (in Ancient Basin).

This should look familiar. Drop down the opening to the left, make your way to the bottom of this area and take the left exit. You can spend 150 geo at a toll machine to produce a bench, but I don't think that is necessary so don't bother. Super dash to the left and you can stop at a small platform with a geo deposit if you want (half of it will fall into the spikes). Super dash the rest of the way but be careful to stop before crashing into the spiked wall, then exit left. Drop down to the left and try to kill some of the Lightseeds (small orange creatures) for Hunter's Journal credit before they scurry away. Smash the geo deposit on the upper left platform, then drop down. You will encounter the first of several Mawlurks ahead. These stationary enemies spit out a torrent of orange projectiles that you must avoid while trying to put damage on them. Follow the path and run past a Mawlurk on the ceiling, then engage another on the platform below. Make your way past another on the ceiling, then drop down to find a Simple Key on a corpse in a dead Mawlurk. Head back up to the main path and kill a Mawlurk on a raised platform, then continue up and to the right and kill one final Mawlurk. Infected Balloons will attack you as you make your way to the exit at the top of the screen.

Follow the path around and up and then break a wooden shortcut barrier on the right, opening a direct path to the start of this area. Then head to the left to battle the Broken Vessel.

Broken Vessel has several attacks: a lunging horizontal slash, a levitating lunging horizontal slash, a random leap, a leaping slam that releases four orange projectiles, a head banging motion that releases many orange projectiles, and an arcing weapon swing. A fairly easy boss, just avoid his attacks and put damage on him as best you can. Defeating him will unlock an achievement:

Backtrack to the right until you reach an opening with ledges that you can now reach. Head up and break a geo deposit on a ledge, then kill the few Infected Balloons that spawn. It's time to combine our abilities to get to a ledge in the upper left. Get to the top left platform, dash to the left, then jump into the opening above and climb the left wall to the top. Jump to the left vertical surface and slide down, then dash left at the bottom and jump up to the wall that leads to a ledge with a Grub (24/46). Backtrack down and right and exit right, then super dash across the gap to the right and exit right. Make your way all the way to the right and you can now jump up here and exit right to reach the Palace Grounds. Go all the way to the right and break a wall, then exit right to reach the Hidden Station. Pay 300 geo at the toll machine to unlock the Hidden Station Stag Station (8/11). Ring the bell and have the Stag take you to Dirtmouth.

Go right towards the lift that takes you up to Crystal Peak (use the Dream Nail on Gravedigger next to the well for 1 whole essence). Ride the lift up and super dash to the right until you see a platform above with a Glimback. Jump up and collect the King's Idol, then exit right. Make your way up and to the right to the bench where we fought the Crystal Guardian previously. To the right of the bench is a path leading up that we can now reach. Follow this path up and to the left to fight the Enraged Guardian.

This boss behaves exactly like the Crystal Guardian but his attacks do two masks of damage each. Defeat him, collect the 500 geo he drops, then go left to find a Mask Shard (10/16). From here, drop down and then make your way to the upper right corner of your map to an area that hasn't yet been explored. You can now reach the high ledge here, then exit right. Go right and hit the Whispering Root with your Dream Nail, then collect the 21 essence in the area. Take the lower right exit and carefully cross the spikes to reach a Grub (25/46), then return to the previous screen and take the top right exit. Follow this linear path around and exit at the top, then continue forward and from this ledge, super dash to the right. Climb up and from the left wall, super dash to the left. Make your way up to the top of the area and go all the way to the left to find a Pale Ore, then jump off to the left and make your way back to Dirtmouth. Buy the Elegant Key from Sly for 800 geo, then have the Stag take you to King's Station and head to the left. Sell your relics to Relic Seeker Lemm 2250 geo, then continue left to the Nailsmith's hut. Give him 2 Pale Ore and 2000 geo to upgrade your nail, raising the base damage from 13 to 17. Return to the Stag Station and have the Stag take you to Queen's Station, then progress to the area marked below:

You are now able to go upwards here. Make your way around to the left and down to the bottom of this area to an exit in the bottom left. Make your way to the bottom of this area, too, and drop off this ledge to fall down into Deepnest. Collect the nearby Mask Shard (11/16) after you land, then walk on a weak section of floor to the left and drop down a level. The goal now is to get to the area shown below:

External image

Just before you get to the destination you will encounter a Stalking Devout. These enemies are tough, especially in enclosed tunnels where you can't attack them from the top. You need to bait them into attacking- their mask will open revealing a weak point and affording you a brief moment to deal damage before they thrust forward with a triple slash that deals two masks of damage. Bait their attack, counterattack when the mask opens, then dash away to safety and repeat. Once you enter the unexplored area, take the path upwards and kill some spider enemies- Deeplings and Little Weavers. Follow the path and you will reach a large, open area with small platforms. Jump across platforms to get to the other side and once there, move steadily to the left to avoid falling into holes that open in the ground. Climb up to the level above and again move left steadily to avoid falling. You will eventually reach a Whispering Root. Hit it with the Dream Nail and then collect the 45 essence in this large, mazelike area.

Make your way to the upper right level, fight past another Stalking Devout, and drop down to a level with a Grub (26/46). Walk to the left to fall through a weak section of ground, then make your way to the upper left part of this area and exit left. Follow this linear path up and around, being careful when floors collapse to reveal spike pits. After a section of floor collapses to reveal a downward path, drop down and go left to break a wooden shortcut barrier. You can follow the path upwards to break another, then backtrack and go left. Pass one more collapsing floor section and exit left to reach the Distant Village:

There is a charm notch in this dangerous area, so be very careful. The Uoma are harmless, but the Ooma will shoot their exploding cores out when defeated and there are orange eggs that explode when damaged, both of which cause two masks of damage. Drop into the acid water and swim left. Try to jump up and hit the 2nd Ooma upwards, then dash back to the right to avoid its explosive core. You need to go up here, avoiding the eggs on the wall. Attack the Ooma to the left and drop straight down to try to get out of explosion range. Jump over the egg on the left and dash over the Ooma. Then make your way past several more eggs and be extremely careful with the single Uoma. Dash left between the final two eggs and slide down the far left wall, dashing from side to side to avoid the eggs on your way down. Jump and dash between several more eggs, kill another Uoma, and immediately move left after dropping down as the floor crumbles and you don't want to fall down below. Grab the charm notch at the end, then carefully leave this area.

Drop down and take the first left exit. Make your way to the left to the second area and climb platforms to reach a path in the upper left that leads to Cornifer. Interact with him to buy the Fog Canyon map (11/13) for 150 geo:

Return two screens to the right and continue down to the bottom, then exit left. Continue to the left and exit and you will find Quirrel outside the Teacher's Archives. Talk to him, then head inside. Climb up some platforms to rest at a bench at the top. Configure your charms if needed, then drop down to the screen below. You can go left or right from here. I prefer to go right, drop down, then go left back to a large central area and drop down to the bottom. Go right again and drop into the acid water, then go left to find a path in the middle leading downward. Drop into an area with numerous small platforms to fight Uumuu.

Uumuu is completely invulnerable and has two different attacks: the first causes dozens of small, non-moving electrical bursts to appear around the arena and the second causes larger electrical bursts to track you, forcing you to keep moving. After avoiding Uumuu's attacks for some time, Quirrel will appear and puncture the boss' protective outer membrane, leaving it vulnerable for a few seconds. Avoid Uumuu's attacks, then counterattack when Quirrel gives you an opening.

After the battle, exit to the bottom right and drop down into the acid water. Swim left and take a path upward to find a capsule containing Monmon the Teacher. Climb around to the platform on the right and inspect Monmon, after which Quirrel will appear. Talk to Quirrel and he will perform action on Monmon, after which you need to hit her with the Dream Nail. You will be teleported into a dream world, so go right and attack Monmon until she starts to explode. You will be prompted to hold cn_B to focus:

Go up when you can and inspect a blue object on the second level to add the Charged Lumafly entry to the Hunter's Journal. Then drop back down and go left and then up to make your way out of this area. Rest at the bench again, then exit the Teacher's Archives to the left.

Start by climbing to the platform on the right that leads to the right exit. Super dash to the left to reach an area with a Grub (27/46). Drop down and break a wooden shortcurt barrier on the left. Exit left, then drop down about halfway and exit left again. Swim under a giant thorny structure and exit left into Queen's Gardens:

Continue left and you will reach an area with platforms that collapse temporarily after you stand on them. Go up into the next screen and follow the path around to the right to find a lever that opens a nearby door. Make your way up and around to the left to drop into an area with an entrance to the Overgrown Mound. Go inside and head right until you reach a large room with several small platforms and spikes at the bottom. Try to exit in the upper right and you will be closed in and forced to fight off several waves of Squits, after which the gates will open. Take the upper right path and jump across a gap to reach a geo deposit, then drop down and go right to find Howling Wraiths:

External image

Go left and break a wooden shortcut barrier, then continue left to exit the Overgrown Mound. once outside, break the wooden shortcut barrier on the right and exit to the right. We've only come here for the eventual map update, so go back left and make your way down to Queen's Gardens. Once there, head left and you can get a Rancid Egg on a platform up on the right. Then jump to the left across some thorns and you will meet Cloth again. Talk to her, then exit left and kill a Mantis Petra in the next area. Make your way down and exit right, then go right into an area with several platforms. You will be sealed in andmust defeat several enemies for the doors to open. Do so, then continue to the right, climbing up and exiting right.

Take the low path and jump across some platforms over thorns, then continue up and around to the left to find Cornifer. Interact with him and buy the Queen's Gardens map (12/13) for 150 geo:

Go left to trigger a collapsing floor section and rest at the bench, then drop down and exit left. You need to make your way across some platforms and over spikes to the left, then down and back to the right to get to a lever, then climb up and break a wooden shortcut barrier so you can get back to the now open door and exit right. Take the top path to the right, cross a gap, and then drop down and exit to the right. Smash a geo deposit down on the right, then take the path just above to the right through some acid water. Kill two Mantis Traitors and pick up the Love Key from a corpse at the end, after which another Mantis Traitor will appear. Head back left to the previous screen and and go over to a Whispering Root. Hit it with the Dream Nail, then collect the 29 essence in the area before exiting to the left.

Make your way to the left through this annoying room full of enemies and collapsing platforms. Exit left, then exit left again to reach a toll machine that requires 150 geo to unlock a bench. Pay the toll and then rest at the bench. Go back two screens to the right, then immediately go up to the next screen. Jump across a gap to the right and enter a room where you will be sealed in and forced to fight several enemies. This battle can be a little tough, which is why we paid the toll to unlock the previous bench. After the enemies are defeated, continue to the right, then make your way up and then back to the left. Smash a geo deposit, then take the path upward to an exit. Make your way to the top of this screen and exit to the left.

This next area has several Loodles- enemies that hop around haphazardly and can be annoying. Kill them and exit left. Several more Loodles will annoy you as you continue to the left. Take a dark path upwards and climb up quickly to reach a ledge with a Grub (28/46). Drop all the way down and jump across a gap to get to a geo deposit. Drop down again and go left and up to get to a ledge with a Hallownest Seal, then go back and take a path to the right. You'll reach an area with a few more Loodles, then go left and take the down exit. Go all the way to the bottom and then to to the right through a dark path to find a Soul Totem. Continue to the right into an area where you will have an optional encounter with Marmu. Ignore him for now and continue to the right, walking through the wall at the end to reach a Stag Station. Interact with the toll machine and pay 200 geo to unlock the Queen's Garden Stag Station (10/11). Rest at the bench, hit the lever to the right to open a shortcut, then ring the bell to summon the Stag. Talk to him and he will tell you that he has found the Stag Nest, which is the 11th Stag Station. Have him take you to the Stag Nest Stag Station (11/11) and an achievement will unlock:

Go to the right to find a Vessel Fragment (4/9), then have the Stag take you to Greenpath. Just outside the station, break a wall and collect a Wanderer's Journal, then continue upwards. We want to head to the upper right exit on the map that leads to Howling Cliffs. Once you get there, make your way to the right across some platforms over spikes. Go up and you wills see a geo deposit in a path to the left. Keep going up and then to the right to find a geo chest that contains 1 geo. Jump into this geo chest to fall down below where you will have to fight two Elder Baldurs. Break a wooden shortcut barrier behind the one on the left, then proceed to the right. Pick up the Baldur Shell charm (22/40), then climb up to find another wooden shortcut barrier and a grub below. Break the barrier, then drop down and rescue the Grub (29/46). Continue to the left and exit.

You'll find yourself outside in Howling Cliffs. Go all the way left to find a King's Idol, then climb some platforms and find a Whispering Root. Hit it with the Dream Nail and collect the 46 essence in the area. When you're done, get to this ledge with a breakable wall on the right. Enter the cave and drop down to find a Wanderer's Journal, then break a wooden shortcut barrier on the left and another breakable wall on the right, then exit right. Continue to the end of this cave to find the corpse of a large bug. Hit it with the Dream Nail, then go back to the left and attack the fireplace structure which triggers a scene and summons the Grimm Troupe to Dirtmouth.

Exit the cave and continue upward until you reach a ledge on the right with Cornifer. Interact with him to buy the Howling Cliffs map (13/13) for 75 geo:

Backtrack to the Soul Totem, Desolate Dive on a weak section of floor to the left, and go left to exit the cave.

Continue upwards and exit to the right at the top. Make your way to the right and along the lower path to reach this small tunnel that leads to Nailmaster Mato's home. Enter, rest at the bench, and go to the right to find the Nailmaster. Interact with him and agree to learn his nail art, Cyclone Slash:

Exit to the left, then head up and to the left to reach a platform with Gorb, the first of seven Dream Warriors. Agree to challenge him to begin the battle. Gorb is an easy boss with one attack: he will shoot out a ring of spears in all directions. As he takes damage he will fire out two and then three rings of spears in a row. He will also occasionally teleport to a different location. Try to stay underneath him and dodge his attacks, putting damage on him when you can. After defeating him, talk to him and you will receive 100 essence. Proceed all the way to the right and drop off the ledge to fall down to King's Pass (the game's starting location). Continue through this area to get back to Dirtmouth and you will notice the Grimm Troupe's tents. Enter the large tent and go all the way right to meet Troupe Master Grimm who will give you the Grimmchild charm (24/40).

The Grimm Troupe questline has two paths that end in an achievement. Both involve equipping the Grimmchild charm and seeking out and destroying three enemies marked on the map, then returning to the Troupe Master. After doing this twice, you will have to fight Troupe Master Grimm. Defeat him and he will mark three more enemies on the map. You then have a choice: kill these three enemies, then battle a stronger version of the Troupe Master or help Brumm, the Grimm Troupe lackey, banish the troupe from Dirtmouth. Each outcome leads to an achievement and you can only earn one per playthrough. More on this later. For now, exit the tent drop, down the well, and go left to Grubfather to collect your rewards. Return to Dirtmouth and buy a Vessel Fragment (5/9) from Sly for 900 geo, then have the Stag take you to King's Station.

Leave the station and go up to an up exit. Head upward through this area, finding a Wanderer's Journal and a geo deposit on the way. Take the up exit to reach a horizontal path where you will be closed in and attacked by numerous husk enemies. After defeating them, then doors will open and you can go right to collect a Vessel Fragment (6/9), resulting in a permanent soul upgrade.

Backtrack, drop down, and exit left to find a large lift. Hit the lever to ride the lift up, then exit left. Go left and flip a switch on a high ledge to open a path upward, then drop down and continue left to reach Blue Lake:

Super dash to the left across the lake and you will find Tiso on the other side. Climb up and exit left and drop down to Salubra's hut. Buy the Quick Focus charm (25/40) for 800 geo, then leave. Go left and up, climb a vertical wall, and super dash back to the right to get onto the ledge that leads back to Blue Lake. Make your way across the lake and exit right, then go up and through the lever opening to reach the Resting Grounds. Climb onto the platform above to find Xero, the second of seven Dream Warriors. Agree to challenge him to begin the battle. Xero is another easy boss with one attack: he will float around the area circled by two swords, shoot a sword at you, then pull it back in. After taking enough damage he gains two more swords and shoots them at you more rapidly. Defeat him, then talk to him to receive 100 essence.

Exit right, then continue past the Dreamer statues and exit right again. Make your way up to the Seer and she will give you rewards for obtaining essence: 100 (a Hallownest Seal), 200 (opens a nearby door to an unimportant area), and 300 (a Pale Ore). Exit the Seer's room and drop down to the bottom of the area. Desolate Dive on the far right tomb to break through to the area below. Walk right and the ground will break. Drop down and break the wall on the right, then go right a short distance until you see a pathway leading up to a breakable spot on the ceiling. Break through, then destroy the geo deposit on the left and rescue the Grub (30/46) on the right. Drop down and continue to the right to find a geo chest and two more breakable walls: one above and one to the right. Break both and follow the path to the right but beware of floor tiles that break to reveal beds of spikes. Go up at the end and break the cracked ceiling tile to reach an area with the Soul Eater charm (26/40). Then head back to the Resting Grounds Stag Station and have the Stag take you to King's Station.

Exit left, then take the top left exit. Go in the door a few levels down that leads to a room with a Great Husk Sentry guarding a grub. Defeat the sentry and rescue the Grub (31/46), then exit. Go all the way left and take the lower exit. Make your way down this long vertical area and then over to the Ancient Basin tram station. Enter the tram and use the console on the right to be taken to the Kingdom's Edge tram station. Go the right, jump across some living spikes, and break through a weak spot in the the wall to get access to the Hive:

Proceed to the right along a linear path, then drop down to the bottom. Go all the way left first to find a bench encased in a giant drop of honey. Attack it until it breaks, then rest and return to the right, smashing geo deposits on the way. Be careful when engaging Hive Soldiers, which are much more aggressive than Hivelings and do a charging stab attack. Continue right to find a Whispering Root. Hit it with the Dream Nail and collect the 20 essence in the area, then make your way to the top and head left. Exit left at the end and you will encounter even more dangerous Hive Guardians in a large, open area. Make your way to the top of this area and exit to the screen above. Smash a geo deposit on the right side of this area and then continue going upward. When you get to the top, head to the right, exiting at the end. Drop down to destroy a geo deposit, then take the upper path to the right to find another. Climb the right wall to the top and super dash to the left with the goal of jumping into a small upwards path. Climb up and go right, then drop down to a Grub (32/46).

Backtrack and drop down on the far left side and you will see a mask shard behind a wall that can only be broken by a slam from a Hive Guardian. Lead a Hive Guardian over to this side of the area and avoid his attacks until he destroys the wall, then collect the Mask Shard (13/16). Make your way to the right side of this area and exit to the right. Continue to an area ahead to battle the Hive Knight.

The Hive Knight has a two primary attacks: a dashing horizontal lunge and a teleport behind to short lunge. He will also occasionally summon three honeycomb bombs that explode in eight directions and also sometimes spit out a bunch of Hivelings out that swoop down from above at the player. Jump over his lunging attack and try to pogo him in the process. Put damage on him when you can while avoiding his attacks and heal when he gets staggered. After defeating him, follow the linear path to the right and around to find the Hiveblood charm (27/40).

Make your way back to the room where you found the Mask Shard and take that path to the left. Break a wooden shortcut barrier, then drop down and continue left through a linear path that leads out of the Hive (after breaking a final wooden shortcut barrier). Once outside, make your way upwards and exit at the top. Climb up the left wall to get to another exit at the top of the screen. Continue up and then to the left to find a ledge with pink crystals. Just jump out into the acid water and head to the left to find a path leading upwards. Climb up and go right to find a Grub (33/46), then backtrack to the previous screen. Take the upper path to the right and you'll find a weak floor section just before the wooden shortcut barrier. Desolate Dive here to break through to the area below. Smash a geo deposit, then go left and around to drop to the area below. Rescue the Grub (34/46), then go back up and break the wooden shortcut barrier on the right.

Exit right into Kingdom's Edge and go directly to the right, then exit. Make your way along the lower path to the right, dealing with numerous Hoppers along the way. A Great Hopper will drop in- kill it and continue to the right. Fight your way past two more Great Hoppers and continue right to find a bench (rest here) and an entrance. Go inside to find Nailmaster Oro who will charge you 800 geo to learn his nail art. Agree and you will learn the Dash Slash:

External image

Exit the hut and continue to the right to the next screen. The ground is weak to the right- Desolate Dive here to break through. Use the Soul Totem and Desolate Dive through another weak spot, then follow the path to the left. Head up to another Soul Totem on the right and another Desolate Dive spot to the left. Go right, dash through a small opening lined with spikes, and follow the path to a Grub (35/46). Backtrack the the left, jump/dash past the Great Hopper, and exit left. Continue left and up to reach a ledge with a door to the right. Go in and walk through the wall to the right to find the Quick Slash charm (28/40). Backtrack and continue up to the top exit.

Break the wooden shortcut barrier and head left. Jump across a gap that leads to a geo deposit and then climb up to exit. Note the barrier on the ledge to the right- we will eventually get an ability that allows us to dash through them. Go left for now, make your way up to a ledge with a weak spot on the ground, and Desolate Dive through, then climb up into the opening to find a Wanderer's Journal. Continue upward into the next screen and make your way into a cave to the right to find a breakable wall. Break through and follow the path to a Grub (36/46). Return to the main area and continue heading upward. The path will split at the top- ignore the left exit and continue to the right. You'll reach a ledge with a sign pointing to a bench, so break through the ceiling in the corner and go up to find a Wanderer's Journal and a bench. Rest, then drop down and exit right. Proceed through the next area and you will see Hornet run away. Follow her to the right and drop down to the bottom. Enter the next room for a second battle with Hornet.

Hornet is mostly unchanged from the first encounter in Greenpath. She will dash at you, she will throw her needle horizontally and then pull it back, she will jump into the air and then dash downward at you, and she will do a small aoe attack with thread from her needle. In addition, she will also occasionally suspend three spiked orbs with thread- attack these and they will disappear. And she can parry and counterattack. Defeat her to unlock an achievement:

The King's Brand allows us access to an area where we can obtain an ability that makes us invincible while dashing, which is extremely helpful moving forward, so we want to get that before making any more progress. Follow the path shown below:

The downward branch shown leads to a Whispering Root. Drop straight down from the entrance ledge to get down to the Whispering Root, then strike it with the Dream Nail and collect the 51 essence in the area. Watch out for numerous Belflys as you make your way to the top of the area, then go left through the top left exit. Follow the path to the left and break a wall that leads to a King's Idol being guarded by a Great Hopper, then return and go up. There are Belflys all around so be careful. You can go right to find a geo deposit on a ledge, then follow the path to the left to find an exit up. Climb up and break the wooden shortcut barrier on the left. To the right is the Colosseum of Fools which you are welcome to go investigate, but I want to get the Shade Cloak before attempting any of the Colosseum trials. Dash left quickly past some Belflys and exit. You'll find yourself in a tall lift shaft in the City of Tears. Make your way down to the King's Station Stag Station. Rest at the bench and have the Stag take you to Hidden Station.

Go all the way left to reach the Ancient Basin, then drop downward to the area below. Go through the door at the end of the path, which will open since you have the King's Brand. Drop all the way to the bottom to reach the Abyss, then go to the left. You'll eventually reach a platform in a room at the end. Continue right and go up when you can. Follow the path to reach a creepy statue holding a bowl with flowing black liquid. Jump into the bowl to receive the Shade Cloak:

This ability allows you to dash through enemies and their attacks without taking damage, which is not only required for progression but also a huge help in battles. It does have a brief cooldown, though. Dash to the left through Void Tendrils and pick up the Arcane Egg, dash through more Void Tendrils, then climb back up to the top ledge. You can climb through the ceiling to a get to a hidden area, then go left and dash through a void barrier to find an object that can be inspected to add a Void Tendril entry to the Hunter's Journal. Return to the main path and continue backtracking to the left with the goal being to climb all the way out of the area. You will see Hornet on the top platform. Continue up to Ancient Basin and head right to the Hidden Station Stag Station past the Palace Grounds. Rest at the bench, then have the Stag take you to King's Station.

Make your way up to the tall lift shaft. Do not ride the lift; instead climb up the left wall, then jump across to the ledge on the right and exit to Kingdom's Edge. Super dash to the right and you will fly right into the Colosseum of Fools. Interact with the Little Fool and pay him 100 geo to open the Trial of the Warrior. Drop down to the right and go right to find Tiso sitting on a bench. Rest here to save, heal, and adjust your charms. I suggest using Longnail, Fragile Heart and Strength, and Grubsong. Deep Focus for faster healing is another good option. Equip what you feel works best, then break a wall to the right to reach a Hot Spring. Fill your soul, then head back up, activate the Trial of the Warrior, and enter the arena to the right.

Colosseum trials pit you against scripted waves of enemies. This first trial is the easiest and since we have advanced Zote's questline by rescuing him, he will be the final boss but is completely inept and doesn't put up any sort of fight. Proceed right into the arena and the trial will begin.

After the battle, climb up to the level above to find three Grubs (37/46, 38/46, and 39/46) and the Collector's Map, which marks the location of all remaining grubs on your map. It's time now to complete some miscellaneous tasks. Exit the Tower of Love, then drop down, then drop down to the right and hit a lever to open some doors. You'll see Zote talking to Bretta. Head down to the Grubfather and collect your rewards, including a third Pale Ore which we need for the final nail upgrade. Exit the Grubfather area and before returning to Dirtmouth, we will rescue the two grubs visible on the map. Drop down and exit right, then jump up to a previously out of reach ledge with a Grub (40/46). Return to the previous screen, drop down to the bottom, and exit down. Drop to the bottom of this area and exit left into a previously unexplored area. Smash a geo deposit on a ledge, then make your way past some Goams and exit left. Go all the way to the left to reach a ledge with a Grub (41/46). Then head back up to Dirtmouth (hit up the Grubfather on the way back for some geo if you feel you need it).

Go into Sly's hut and "descend" to the basement. Talk to Sly to find out that he is actually the Great Nailsage and he will give you the Nailmaster's Glory charm (29/40). Go back up and have the Stag take you to City Storerooms. From here, proceed to the four destinations marked below:

External image

The first destination is a locked door near the Soul Sanctum that requires the Elegant Key (which we purchased from Sly in Dirtmouth already). Take the shortcut from the right of the nearby bench and climb up to use the Elegant Key in the locked door. You'll have to fight another Soul Warrior, but this time he also summons Follys. Defeat him, then climb up to the top and inspect a device to receive the Shade Soul upgrade:

External image

Head down to the second destination to find Relic Seeker Lemm. Talk to him, then go back one screen and up to his usual location and sell him your relics. I had about 15k geo at this point which is more than enough to buy everything we need. From here, head to the third destination- the Nailsmith. Give him 4000 ore and 3 Pale Ore to upgrade your nail, raising the base damage from 17 to 21, after which he tells you he has to step outside. Go outside to talk to him and he will ask you to kill him with the nail. This is a forked path that leads to two achievements- one for killing him and one for leaving him alive. Ignore his request and leave him alive so that we can eventually complete a final step to complete the Happy Couple achievement. Head right towards destination 4.

Once you reach destination 4, a previously unexplored area, go right and climb up, heading left at the top and exit left to reach a bench. Rest here, then return right. You can then drop down a level and follow the path around and drop into a room below that contains a Great Husk Sentry and Lance Sentry. Even with all your upgrades, Big Husk Sentries are still tough. I like to pogo on their heads and try to time it so I bounce out of range when they do their overhead slashes. Kill both, then hit the nearby lever to open a door at the bottom right of the area. Head through and follow the path around. Climb up and hit a lever to open a shortcut to the bench, then exit up to the right. Jump to the upper level to avoid the Great Husk Sentry on the left. Go left, take the lift up, then follow the path to the right and you will eventually reach a large room with another Great Husk Sentry. Kill him, then go left to find a Grub (42/46). Backtrack to the lift and go left, then exit up and take a lift up. At the top, climb up just right of the elevator and break through the ceiling to access a hidden path above. Break the chain at the end of the path to drop a chandelier, killing one of the six enemies you are about to face. Then drop down and enter the room below to fight the six five Watcher Knights.

(I did not kill one with the chandelier in the video)

The Watcher Knights start out dormant and become active one at a time, with up to two being active at once. They have three attacks: a double slash, a rolling attack, and a bouncing attack. Before going all the way to the right to begin the battle, hit any of the knights with your Dream Nail to fill your soul. Once the battle has begun, try to exclusively attack from above as the only attack that can hurt is a bouncing attack. It's possible to do enough pogo attacks in a single flurry to kill a knight before they move out of range. After you kill the final knight, follow the path to the right and around to reach a geo chest and a Hallownest Seal, then climb and exit at the top. Take the nearby lift to the top of the building and go right at the top to find Lurien the Watcher. Hit him with the Dream Nail and you will be teleported into a dream world. Go right and attack Lurien until he starts to explode. You will be prompted to hold cn_B to focus:

From here, head down to destination 4, the Stone Sanctuary. Make your way to the central area to find No Eyes, the third of seven Dream Warriors. Agree to challenge him to begin the battle. No Eyes does not do any direct attacks; instead she just teleports around the area while spirits float back and forth. Avoid the spirits and attack No Eyes when you can. After defeating her, talk to her and you will receive 200 essence, putting you over 600 total and unlocking an achievement:

Exit the Stone Sanctuary and make your way left and down to the Queen's Station Stag Station. Call the Stag and have him take you to Queen's Gardens. Exit right, drop down, then go left through a wall to find a Grub (44/46). Backtrack to the station and go left through the wall to destination 5. Here, you will find Marmu, the fourth of seven Dream Warriors. Agree to challenge him to begin the battle. Marmu just somewhat erratically charges you in ball form and occasionally teleports around the area. After defeating him, talk to him and you will receive 200 essence. Go back to the Stag Station, rest at the bench, and make your way up the unexplored area leading to destinations 7 and 8.

IMPORTANT! Hit a switch at the location marked with the red star to open a gate blocking the path downward. We need to be able to come up through this path for a task later in the playthrough.

Once you reach this new area, you'll have to do some platforming across platforms that drop and avoid the thorned edges. Carefully jump and dash through this area and exit in the upper left. Ignore the left exit for now and climb up towards destination 7. At the top there will be a windowed area on the left:

External image

Break the window and you'll face a challenging platforming section outside. You need to climb and super dash from side to side with some Mosslfies in your way (I used Shade Soul to kill them). You can jump, dash, then double jump from the right wall to the final platform. Free the Grub at the top (45/46), then carefully backtrack to the broken window and exit right. You'll be back in Greenpath near a Whispering Root- hit it with the Dream Nail, then cut the nearby vine to open the way to an area we had been in earlier and collect the 44 essence. You can swim in the acid water so kill the Durandoo in the area for Hunter's Journal progress. When done, backtrack to the previous screen and drop down to the left exit I instructed you to ignore earlier. Should you not be at full health, return to the bench to heal and then return to this point. Exit left towards destination 8.

Dash through the void barrier and follow the path around until you can jump up into a room above. Do so and you will be sealed in and attacked by Mantis enemies. Kill the first and Cloth will appear to kill the second. Two more will appear- kill them and the Traitor Lord battle will begin. Cloth will continue to help.

Traitor Lord has two primary attacks: he will dash straight ahead and he will jump into the air and dash downward at an angle. Try to react quickly by either backing up or dashing through/over him, then counterattack. He will also do two less frequent attacks: punch the ground to release shockwaves that must be dashed through and throw out two arcing orange blades. After dealing enough damage, the boss will impale Cloth who will then deal a fatal blow before dying herself. Defeating the Traitor Lord unlocks an achievement:

After the battle, exit left and make your way to a hut. Kill the Aluba flying by for a journal entry, then enter and follow a linear path to reach the White Lady. Interact with her and she will give you the White Fragment, half of the Kingsoul charm:

Leave the hut and backtrack to the Stag Station (you can talk to Cloth's ghost on the way). Rest at the bench, then have the Stag take you to Distant Village. Exit the station and drop down to an entrance to a hut on the left. Enter, then go right where several NPCs will suggest that you rest on the bench. Do so and a scene will occur, after which you will awaken in the Beast's Den. Press cn_X a few times to free yourself, then make your way to the right. A floor section will collapse; take that path down and left to find a Hallownest Seal. You can continue right to find another floor section breaks revealing a path to some geo deposits. Backtrack, then jump up onto a path above to the left and you will have to engage a Stalking Devout.

Continue forward and another floor section will break revealing a path back to the lower section. Just ahead you can climb up to find a path on the left with another Stalking Devout and a Soul Totem. Go back and climb up, then head left. Follow the path and another floor section will collapse. Go down to find a right path that leads to a Bluggsac with a Rancid Egg, then drop down to the path below for two geo deposits (the ground section will collapse here, as well). Climb all the way up and go right. A floor section ahead will collapse to reveal a pit of spikes, so be careful not to fall in. Climb up and you will hear a grub. Go left at the top and a floor section will collapse. Drop down to rescue the final Grub (46/46), unlocking an achievement:

Exit left, then go to the Stag Station up and to the right. Call the Stag and have him take you to Dirtmouth.

With the three Dreamers destroyed, we can enter the Temple of the Black Egg in Forgotten Crossroads to complete the game, but we still have a lot of work to do towards 112% completion. Visit Sly and buy the Mask Shard (14/16) for 1500 geo, the Heavy Blow charm (31/40) for 350 geo, and the Sprintmaster charm (32/40) for 400 geo. Then drop down the well to take care of a few tasks in the Forgotten Crossroads:

External image

Head left first to the Grubfather to collect the rest of your rewards, including the Grubberfly's Elegy charm (33/40). Then exit and head right to destination #2, the Temple of the Black Egg. Go inside and a brief scene will occur, after which you can enter the inner area. Do so and travel far to the right to eventually reach a bench and a nearby object that you can inspect. Do so to make your completion percentage visible in your inventory (and when selecting your save file). Hunter's Journal progress will now be shown as well. At this point, my completion was at 90% and my Hunter's Journal showed 133/147 encountered. Exit the temple and make your way to destination #3.

Break into the ceiling, super dash through a spiked path, and exit up. Make your way to the right and you will be sealed in a room and forced to kill a few waves of enemies. Do so, then exit right to find the Glowing Womb charm (34/40). Exit this area and make your way to destination #4, Salubra's Hut. Buy the Lifeblood Heart charm (35/40) for 250 geo and a charm notch for 1400 geo. You will then see Salubra's Blessing in her inventory but you must have all 40 charms in order to be able to buy it. Adjust your charms at the bench outside if you'd care to, then head to the Forgotten Crossroads Stag Station. Ring the bell and have the Stag take you to Queen's Station where we can make our way to two destinations:

External image

Head to destination #1 and use the Dream Nail on the Whispering Root, then collect the 18 essence in the area. Make your way to destination #2 to find Elder Hu, the fifth of seven Dream Warriors. Agree to challenge him to begin the battle. Hu will float above you and summon a row of rings that slam down on the ground where you must get to a safe gap to avoid damage. He will also disappear and send a cascade of rings that close in from both sides so dash through to safety to avoid damage. After defeating him, talk to him and you will receive 100 essence. Head back to the Stag Station and have the Stag take you to King's Station where we can then progress to two destinations:

External image

Make your way to destination #1. Dash through a void barrier and exit right to reach Markoth, the sixth seven Dream Warriors. Agree to challenge him to begin the battle. Markoth is the only somewhat difficult Dream Warrior, more so when you face him in the Pantheon of Hallownest when there is no solid ground at the bottom. He will float around the arena circled by a Dreamshield and swords will appear and then propel towards you. After some time passes, Markoth will stop moving and his Dreamshield will spiral outward from him. Once he takes enough damage he will summon a second Dreamshield to circle him and the sword projectiles will increase in speed. After defeating him, talk to him and you will receive 250 essence, then make your way to destination #2, the tram station.

Enter the tram, then travel left to Ancient Basin where we have three destinations:

External image

Sit at the bench in the tram and unequip all of your charms. Equip Lifeblood Heart, Joni's Blessing, Fragile Heart, and Wayward Compass. This will make it so you have 16 Lifeblood Masks for health. The door at destination #2 will only open if you have at least 15 Lifeblood Masks, so you can take damage once on your way there. First, make your way down to destination #1, then enter a room with a fountain that you can interact with to be asked to "drop all geo into the fountain?" Agree and you will spend 3000 geo to receive a Vessel Fragment (7/9). Then carefully make your way down to destination #2. If you lose more than one health on the way, you'll have to go back up to the bench to heal and try again. Reach the platform with at least 15 Lifeblood Masks and the door will open. Head inside and you will be tasked with making your way through an area full of spikes. Proceed slowly and use the right stick to scout ahead before dropping down blindly. At the end of this linear path is an open room where you can collect the Lifeblood Core charm (36/40), after which the screen will fade and you will be teleported back outside. Make your way up and then left towards destination #3. Use the toll machine to unlock the bench on the way and rest and adjust your charms. At this point, I'm using Fragile Heart and Strength, Mark of Pride, Grubsong, and Wayward Compass (mainly so my location is shown on screenshots for the guide, but you may find it helpful as the map can be confusing when your location isn't shown).

Continue left towards destination #3 which is the area where we fought the Broken Vessel earlier. You will see the Broken Vessel's corpse emitting what appears to be essence. This is one of six Dream Bosses, which are alternate (stronger) versions of bosses that are activated with the Dream Nail. These encounters take place in a dream world and dying to them causes no penalty- you are simply returned to the real world where you can try again. Hit the corpse with the Dream Nail to be teleported into a dream world where you must make your way across platforms and into the area where the battle with the Lost Kin will begin.

The Lost Kin is basically a faster version of the Broken Vessel. He uses the same attacks and continually spawns Infected Balloons, which you must quickly kill as to not get overwhelmed. He also tends to jump around more and his slam attack releases an increased amount of orange globs. After several hits he will stagger briefly, which is the only time you can safely heal (be sure to kill any Infected Balloons before attempting to heal).

You will then be returned to the real world. Interact with the Lost Kin's ghost to receive 400 essence, then make your way back to the tram station. Enter the tram and travel left to Deepnest where we have five destinations:

External image

Head left into an area with Garpedes and make your way to the left side of the area and exit down to get to destination #1. As soon as you drop into the screen below, go left through a wall to find a Garpede corpse that you can interact with to add an entry to the Hunter's Journal. Then go back and drop down to take a path to the right where you can dash through a void barrier. Make your way past several Goams and Garpedes and you will find the Sharp Shadow charm (37/40). Many people swear by this charm but I never liked it because it adds to your dash distance, which always screwed me up.

Break the wooden shortcut barrier to the left and climb out, then make your way through the Garpede maze and up to destination #2. The goal here is to get to the right side of the area by pogoing off of Garpedes and jumping/dashing over walls with spikes at the top. I find it best to get to the wall, then double jump over the height of the spikes and dash right to land on the Garpede. Three Dirtcarvers will spawn on the first platform which you can kill to get some soul. After the second stretch, which is twice as long, you'll see a Garpede moving vertically. Break the wall to the right to find a Soul Totem, then pogo off of the Garpede to make your way up to a pathway above. Once you get there, go left to find a Vessel Fragment (8/9). Continue left and you will eventually fall through a weak floor section to drop to the beginning of the area. Exit down and head towards destination #3.

When you arrive you will see Galien, the seventh of seven Dream Warriors. Agree to challenge him to begin the battle. Galien will float around and spin his scythe which will bounce around towards you. He will occasionally call it back, then send it out again. After sustaining enough damage he will summon one and then two smaller spinning scythes that you must also avoid. After defeating him, talk to him and you will receive 200 essence, then head towards destination #4.

To get to destination #4, first get one of the upper right paths in the large area. If you get to the uppermost path on the right, you can go all the way to the right past a Stalking Devout and drop down to an area where a grub was rescued. If you fall through the floor here, you can land on a small platform and then jump across to the right. This path leads to another Stalking Devout with what appears to be a dead end:

External image

Break the wall at the end of this path (you'll hear a secret notification but the wall will not physically break) and continue right to find the entrance to the Weavers' Den. Enter and you can drop down and head left past several beds of spikes to get a Rancid Egg. Get back to the path above and continue right to the end, climb up, then head left. Jump/dash (or super dash) across a long run of spikes to find the Weaversong charm (38/40). Exit the Weavers' Den and make your way to destination #5, an unexplored area up and to the left.

Once you reach this area, use the Soul Totem on the left and make your way upward. There's really nothing of importance here- we're just going this way for the sake of map completion and to get to the Quueen's Garden Stag Station. A path to the left near the top leads to the Mask Maker, a lore NPC who serves no other purpose. Jump to a hidden path in the upper left to proceed into Queen''s Gardens, then make your way up to the Stag Station. Rest at the bench, then ring the bell to summon the Stag. Have him take you to Resting Grounds and pay a quick visit to the Seer. She will give you several rewards for essence collected: the Dream Wielder charm (39/40), then a Vessel Fragment (9/9) which gives you a permanent soul meter upgrade and unlocks an achievement:

Soul Tyrant is just a faster, more erratic version of Soul Master. The battle is essentially unchanged other than that fact that it's harder to get close to Soul Tyrant to deal damage to him because he teleports away so quickly. He also seems to do more diving attacks, many times with a fakeout to second dive. Enter a hut in this area to find the Grey Mourner. She asks you to place a delicate flower on a grave in Queen's Gardens. The catch is that you cannot fast travel and you cannot take any damage at all or the flower will be destroyed (you can get another flower from her to try again if this happens). This means that you have to travel all the way to the other side of the map unharmed. The easiest way to do this is to make a round trip without the flower to kill every enemy in your path and to learn the layout of environmental hazards. As long as you don't rest at a bench, most enemies will not respawn. Exit the hut, rest at the nearby bench, then begin your round trip as laid out below, killing every enemy along the path. Remember- do not sit ant any benches.

Hit the corpse with the Dream Nail to be teleported into a dream world where you must make your way across platforms and into the area where the battle with the Failed Champion will begin.

Failed Champion is a faster, stronger version of the False Knight. He uses basically the same attacks but does two masks of damage with each attack. He will jump around a lot and you want to be able to dash in such a way that you can end up in position to attack him when he lands. You need to damage him until he gets knocked down, then deal damage to the maggot that pops out. After getting back up, he will always jump to the center and do a back and forth series of eight attacks, then resume his normal attacks. Note that you can't generate soul from attacking the knight, but you do gain soul from attacking the maggot. After knocking the knight down, you have a few seconds before he gets back up where can use the Dream Nail on the maggot to gain Soul and/or or heal, then attack the maggot before he gets back up. Grey Prince Zote has several attacks: He will jump around the area, sending out shockwaves when he lands, he will jump through the floor and then fall from above, sending out shockwaves when he lands, he stop what he is doing and spit out Zotelings, and he will charge back and forth holding out his nail, eventually falling down and sending out shockwaves. After hitting him several times he will fall to the ground and flail for a few seconds, which will give you time to heal. The first destination is the open door on this ledge. Go inside, kill a few husks, then jump into the right wall to find a hidden path that leads to a room with a Gorgeous Husk. Kill it to add its entry to the Hunter's Journal, then collect the geo it drop. Exit and drop off to the ledge to the left and you'll see a door that requires a Simple Key to unlock. Do so, then enter and take the lift to the top. Exit left, then go right and you will meet Marissa. Feel free to sit and listen to her sing, but this entire area is completely optional as nothing counts towards completion or achievements. Go back and climb to the upper area with a Hot Spring and a bench. Break the wall on the right to open a path to the tall lift chamber and then head to destination #2, the Colosseum of Fools. Interact with the Little Fool and pay 800 geo to open the Trial of the Fool, then go down to the bench and adjust your charms. My suggested setup is Fragile Strength, Longnail, Dreamwielder, Grubsong, and Quick Focus, which halves the time it takes to heal with focus. Equip whatever charms you feel work best and head back up to the level above. Activate the Trial of the Fool and then head right into the arena to begin.

There's no two ways about it- this trial is a pain in the ass. The hardest part comes about 2/3 of the way through when you have to cling to the walls to avoid a spiked floor and deal with several waves of flying enemies, so be sure to have full health when this section starts. Always try to leave Shielded Fools alive so you can Dream Nail them to refill soul. Be ready near the start to climb onto the wall when the Belflies appear so you can avoid their explosions. For the God Tamer, the battle ends once the beast is killed, so focus solely on it. I find pogoing is the best option here. And be sure to quit to menu rather than dying so you don't have to repair Fragile charms. This may take you a few tries but stick with it and you'll get it done.

Once you complete the Trial of the Fool, an achievement will unlock:

Once you reach the unexplored area, drop down and head out to the left into a large open area called the Junk Pit. Open some geo chests and approach a chained up cocoon that you can unlock with a simple key. Do so and an NPC will appear and drop the Godtuner:

This item grants you access to the Godhome area. Feel free to use the Dream Nail on the nearby NPC and check out the Godhome, but we will be going there later to complete the Godhome Pantheons. Climb up to the left and make your way back to the right until you reach a platform with a cave entrance. Go in and climb up to find a small pocket of water on the right. Swim right into a hidden passage and break the obstruction at the end. Continue right and interact with the Fluke Hermit, then backtrack to continue upward and exit at the top. Break a wooden shortcut barrier to the right and you'll be back in the City of Tears near the Nailsmith's hut. You will use this shortcut to get back to the Junk Pit later, but for now, hold cn_up + cn_Y to return to your Dreamgate in Dirtmouth.

You should now be at 105% progress. Here is a breakdown of the remaining 7%:

  • Get the second piece of the Kingsoul Charm from the White Palace (1% progress)
  • Complete the Grimm Troupe Questline (2% progress)
  • Enter Godhome and complete the first four Godmaster Pantheons (4% progress)

In addition to the 112% completion requirements, you also still need to:

  • Purchase Salubra's Blessing (after completing the Kingsoul charm)
  • Get the remaining entries in the Hunter's Journal
  • Unlock all of the Hunter's Notes in the Hunter's journal to receive the Hunter's Mark
  • Advance Mr. Mushroom through his seven locations.
  • Defeat the Hollow Knight in the Temple of the Black Egg to get the basic ending
  • Turn the Kingsoul Charm to into Void Heart in the Abyss
  • Defeat the Hollow Knight with the help of Hornet to reach a second ending
  • Defeat Radiance to reach a third ending

When all of this is done, you will have earned 54 achievements and completed your first playthrough.

Continuing on- have the Stag take you to Hidden Station. Go left to the Palace Grounds and use the Dream Nail on the corpse with white armor. You will be taken to another area where you can go right and defeat a Kingsmould to open the entrance to the White Palace:

External image

Make your way to the right and you will see flying enemies that you can pogo off of to reach a ledge with a bench. Rest here and modify your charms. This area presents a difficult platforming challenge and little opportunity to regain soul for healing so equip Fragile Heart, Grubsong, Grubberfly's Elegy, and Deep Focus. The two grub charms work together to grant a chunk of soul whenever you take damage and Deep Focus doubles your healing (but halves Focus speed). When you are ready, head to the right and do some basic platforming to reach an exit to the right.

Continue to the right and you will be locked in a room and forced to fight another Kingsmould. Kill it and continue right, then climb up and go back to the left to find a lever. Hit it, then drop through a weak floor section to the left and make your way left to the previous screen. Jump up to a ledge on the left and ride a now active lift up. Jump to the left over some spikes, climb up to the top, and then exit up to the left. Climb up and you will see two Royal Retainers. Kill them to add their entry to the Hunter's Journal. At this point, an achievement unlocked:

My Hunter's Journal progress showed as Encountered 150/150. The achievement may not have popped for you if you weren't as diligent as I was in killing enemies. This album shows screenshots of every entry in my journal. Compare your journal to mine to figure out which entries you are missing, then use the Hollow Knight wiki to figure out locations for whatever enemies you still need a journal entries for. After completing the White Palace, the next task will be to complete the Hunter's notes by killing the required enemies a certain number of times (I still need one more Durandoo kill, for example).

Continue to the right and kill some more Royal Retainers, then jump to a central platform on the left and rest at the bench. The following video will show how to get through the White Palace far better than any written explanation can:

I feel that a written explanation of this area is not helpful all as it will basically be "avoid these saws, jump to this platforms, time your dash to get past these spikes" which doesn't really make this difficult platforming easier. Watch the video to see the path to follow and practice getting past each part. You shouldn't struggle with keeping your health up because of the combination of charms I suggested that you use.

Should you need it, the exit to this area can be found to the left of the first bench. There is a Soul Totem on the level above the exit so you should have full soul to start. Once you reach the end of the White Palace, you will find the Pale King. Attack him and collect the second half of the Kingsoul, making it whole:

Your progress will be different than mine, so look through your journal and for every enemy that you must "defeat X more to decipher the Hunter's notes," seek them out in the world and kill them the required amount of times. Again, use the Hollow Knight wiki to find locations of each enemy (just search enemies by name to get to their individual pages which show maps marking specific enemy locations). Some enemies will respawn when you leave and re-enter an area but most require resting at a bench to respawn.

NOTE: you will need to kill one more Oblobble to decipher the Hunter's notes and you only encounter them as the final boss of the Trial of the Conqueror. BUT you also will fight two of them in the Pantheon of the Artist which we will have to complete later in the playthrough. If you hold off on this achievement until after you complete the four Pantheons, you won't have to run the Trial of the Conqueror again. Although you may still need more kills of other enemies only found in the trials (like Shielded Fool and Sturdy Fool) depending on how many trial runs you made, so determine your best path to completing the Hunter's notes before continuing.

Once you have deciphered the Hunter's notes for each enemy in the journal, return to the Hunter in Greenpath:

Interact with him and he will ask if you are ready to receive your reward. Say "yes" and the floor below you will give way, causing you to fall to the area below. The Hunter will drop down as well and it will appear as if a battle is about to start. Instead, the Hunter gives you the Hunter's Mark, after which an achievement unlocks:

Hold cn_up+ cn_Y to return to your Dreamgate in Dirtmouth. Rest at the bench and equip the Grimmchild charm. Open your map and there will be three flames marked:

External image

Go to these marked areas and you will find a burning torch. Approach the torch and a Grimmkin Novice will appear. These enemies move in such a way to maintain a safe distance from the Knight, then perform one of two attacks: a charge or a shooting a volley of fireballs. Kill the Grimmkin Novice and the familiar will absorb it. Repeat for the other two flames on the map, then return to Troupe Master Grimm. He will upgrade the familiar, then mark three more flames on the map- one in king's Pass, one in Resting Grounds, and one in Kingdom's edge. Go to the three marked areas to find burning torches and Grimmkin Masters will appear as you get close. These enemies behave just like Grimmkin Novices except they have more health and a new attack- a spiraling volley of fireballs. Kill all three Grimmkin Masters and return to Troupe Master Grimm and he will take the familiar away and engage you in battle.

Troupe Master Grimm has four attacks:

  • he will appear, dash towards you, then do an uppercut into the air and release several projectiles
  • he will appear in the air, dive diagonally down towards you, then dash forward
  • he will appear and shoot out three fiery bats towards you
  • he will appear and plunge the tails of his cape into the ground which then shoot up as vertical columns that must be avoided

You can counterattack after all of his attacks- step/dash back to avoid his dash and attack him before he does the uppercut, jump over his diving attack and pogo him, jump/dash over the bats to get close and attack him, and avoid the upward burst of cape columns, then dash through them to get close enough to attack.

At 75%, 50%, and 25% remaining health, he will appear as a large orb in the center of the room and erupt fireballs that you must avoid. After hitting him a dozen or so times, he will explode into a bunch of bats, fly around for a few seconds, then reform and continue with his attacks. One bat has red eyes and can be damaged during this sequence.

After defeating him, he will upgrade the familiar and mark four new flames on the map. A chest will also appear containing a charm notch. Exit the tent and an achievement will unlock:

Ignore the flame in the Distant Village which marks the location of Brumm, an NPC who's assistance is required in reaching the Banishment achievement. This achievement is in conflict with the Ritual achievement which we will work towards instead. Seek out the flames marked in Fungal Wastes, Ancient Basin, and the Hive. Approach the torches and Grimmkin Nightmares will appear. These enemies behave just like Grimmkin Masters except they have more health and a new attack- a series of tracking flame pillars. Kill all three Grimmkin Nightmares and return to the Grimm Troupe tent. Go all the way to the right to find Grimm hanging upside down. Strike him with the Dream Nail, then return to the left and a battle with nightmare King Grimm will begin.

Since this is a Dream Boss, there is no penalty for death. Which is good, because this boss is by far the hardest you've faced up to this point.

Nightmare King Grimm is very similar to Troupe Master Grimm, but his attacks are considerably faster and hit for two masks of damage. He uses five attacks:

  • he will appear, dash towards you, then do an uppercut into the air and release several projectiles
  • he will appear in the air, dive diagonally down towards you, then dash forward leaving a trail of flame behind him
  • he will appear and shoot out four fiery bats towards you
  • the tails of his cape appear as vertical columns that must be avoided (he is not present for this attack)
  • he will appear floating in the air and four columns of flame will track you before erupting from the ground

Like Grimm, at 75%, 50%, and 25% remaining health, he will appear as a large orb in the center of the room and erupt fireballs that you must avoid. After hitting him a dozen or so times, he will explode into a bunch of bats, fly around for a few seconds, then reform and continue with his attacks. One bat has red eyes and can be damaged during this sequence but this is really the only time you will be able to heal.

This battle is much harder than Troupe Master Grimm because of the increased damage and speed of Nightmare King Grimm's attacks. It will probably take you numerous attempts to get comfortable with reacting quickly to attacks and counterattacking efficiently but since there it no penalty with death, persistence will pay off.

You will then wake up in Dirtmouth. The Grimmchild charm will be fully upgraded and the large Grimm Troupe Tent will be gone. Rest at the bench and equip the Shroom Spore charm. It's time to advance Mr. Mushroom through his seven locations. We could have worked on this previously as we made our way through the various areas for other tasks but I decided to save it and do all in succession. Find him at each location, hit him with your nail to wake him up, then talk to him and he will advance to his next location.

Let's get one of the ending achievements out of the way. Head to the Temple of the Black Egg in Forgotten Crossroads:

External image

Rest at the bench deep in the temple. Progress will not be saved after this point so you will continue from here after defeating the Hollow Knight and seeing the basic ending. Make your way to the right and into the final area. Break the four chains holding the Hollow Knight to begin the final battle.

The Hollow Knight has two basic attacks:

  • a fast dashing stab that covers about half of the arena
  • a wide arc triple slash

Jump over both of these attacks and try to pogo and/or counterattack after landing. Once you deal enough damage to him, the Hollow Knight will start to use two more attacks:

  • he will jump into the air, then slam down to create several pillars of fire
  • he will lift his cloak and shoot out a barrage of orange blobs

After dealing enough damage to him he will start using three more attacks:

  • he will float in the middle of the area and release a barrage of orange blobs in all directions
  • his chest will inflate and he will bounce around the area
  • not really an attack: he will stab himself in the chest with his nail, during which he takes almost no damage from your attacks

After the Hollow Knight takes enough damage, he fall to his knees and start exploding. You will be prompted to hold cn_B to focus:

External image

We are closing in on the end of this playthgrough. Reload your save file and hold cn_up + cn_Y to return to your Dreamgate, then head back to the Junk Pit most easily accessed from this point in the City of Tears:

External image

Hit the Godseeker NPC with the Dream Nail to be taken to the Godhome area. Make your way across some columns to the right and the doors to the first three Panetheon will unlock as you approach them.

External image

The fourth Pantheon is locked until the first three are completed. The fifth Pantheon is locked until the fourth is completed. Climb up to the bench above to save and modify charms if needed.

The first four Pantheons pit you against 10 bosses with a bench halfway through (to heal and modify charms but progress is not saved). You must defeat all 10 bosses in a single run to complete the Pantheon. The 10th boss of each Pantheon is a new boss that you did not encounter in the main game.

If you drop off to the right you will find an open door on the lower level that leads to an area called the Hall of Gods. As soon as you enter you can interact with a tablet that shows your progress with each boss (blank spots are bosses you haven't fought yet).

External image

The Hall contains statues of every boss that you've faced before and you can fight bosses in three different difficulties: Attuned (basic version of the boss), Ascended (the boss deals double damage and has additional health, and there are possible new hazards in the boss arena) and Radiant, which is only unlocked after defeating a boss on Ascended difficulty (the same as Ascended but any damage kills you). The Hall of Gods allows you to practice against bosses to learn their patterns but also gives you the additional challenge of trying to defeat bosses on Ascended or Radiant difficulty.

Note that since this is a Dream area, dying in the Hall of Gods or in a Pantheon results in no penalty.

When selecting a Pantheon, bindings can be set to give an extra challenge. These are not required for achievement completion so feel free to ignore them. The Nail binding greatly reduces your nail damage, the Shell binding caps your health at four masks, the Charms binding unequips all of your charms, and the Soul binding caps your soul meter at 1/3. There is a door to the left of the entrance to the Hall of Gods that has 16 nodes around it with larger nodes in positions 8, 12, and 16.

External image

These nodes light up for each unique binding that was set for completion of a Pantheon. Once you get the 8th light lit up, the door opens and you can go inside and use the Dream Nail on the blue colored dreamcatcher to add Lifeblood Cocoons to bench areas within the Pantheons. These Lifeblood Cocoons will offer 3 Lifeseeds when the 8th binding light is lit, 4 Lifeseeds when the 12th binding light is lit, and 5 Lifeseeds when all 16 binding lights are lit. I personally didn't bother with bindings at all.

With all that said, it's time to tackle the Pantheon of the Master where you will face the following bosses:

External image

This Pantheon is very easy and if you struggle at all, head to the Hall of Gods to practice. There is a bench after the 5th boss. Honestly, none of these early game bosses should give you any trouble at all outside of Oro and Mato and that's just because you've never fought them before.

The final battle starts with just Oro; Mato joins in after you deal enough damage to Oro to knock him down. Oro will use three attacks:

  • a wide horizontal slash followed up with a forward overhead slash- back out of range, then dash in and attack
  • leap into the air, front flip, then a plunging slash straight down-back out of range, then dash in and attack
  • his nail art, which is a charged up dashing slash- jump over as he goes by (try to pogo him in the process)

After knocking Oro down, Mato will join the battle. Mato does the same attacks as Oro but his nail art is a charged up cyclone slash (try to pogo off of it and dash away). Things can get pretty hectic with both brothers out together. Try to keep them both on the same side and they should stagger their attacks. When one does a nail art, the other will stand still in a defensive position. After defeating one brother, the second will continue fighting as normal. Defeat the second to complete the Pantheon and unlock an achievement:

Next up is the Pantheon of the Artist where you will face the following bosses:

External image

Like with the previous Pantheon, nothing here presents any sort of difficulty other than not having encountered Paintmaster Sheo before. And after you get to Sheo for the first time he becomes available in the Hall of Gods where you can practice him.

The Paintmaster Sheo battle isn't difficult at all. He has four attacks that you can anticipate by the color of his paintbrush:

  • blue paintbrush: overhead slash that releases three arcing globs of blue paint
  • red paintbrush: jumping slam that releases five blobs of red paint in downward arcs from the top of his jump
  • yellow paintbrush: overhead slash that creates a long, horizontal yellow spear of paint
  • purple paintbrush: charged slam that creates a purple paint column and rains down several purple blobs of paint

After several hits, Sheo will stagger in a paint explosion leaving you a few seconds to heal. Defeat him to complete the Pantheon and unlock an achievement:

Next up is the Pantheon of the Sage where you will face the following bosses:

External image

This Pantheon ramps up in difficulty from the previous two, particularly Grey Prince Zote, who is slightly more powerful than when you fought him initially, and Great Nailsage Sly who you've never fought before. I suggest practicing Zote in the Hall of Gods before attempting the Pantheon to refamiliarize yourself with his attacks. The Uumu encounter is slightly different in that Quirrel does not help to make the boss temporarily vulnerable; instead, Ooma will occasionally rise from below that can be attacked into Uumu, breaking his membrane and giving you a chance to damage him. Great Nailsage Sly can be tough until you are comfortable reacting to his attacks, which are fast and frequent. After encountering him for the first time you can practice him in the Hall of Gods.

The Great Nailsage Sly battle has two phases. During the first, he will mostly use two attacks:

  • double overhead slash to rising spin attack- back out of range and counterattack after he lands
  • leap to downward slam often followed up with a back and forth arcing attack- again, back out of range, then counterattack after he lands

He can also use all three nail arts- great slash, dash slash, and cyclone slash. You can tell they are coming as he must charge them up, generally from the side of the arena. After dealing enough damage to Sly he will drop his nail and stagger briefly, affording you time to heal. After a few such staggers he will teleport to the center of the area, let out a shriek, and start his second phase. He will dash all around the arena, then appear close by and spin like a saw towards you. Dash out of the way, then counterattack as he stops spinning before he dashes away. This behavior repeats until he is defeated, after which the Pantheon is completed and an achievement will unlock:

You will also unlock Godseeker mode:

External image

Next up is the Pantheon of the Knight where you will face the following bosses:

External image

This Pantheon presents a big ramp in difficulty, as many of these late game bosses are difficult and Pure Vessel, an upgraded version of the Hollow Knight, is by far the hardest boss up to this point. You should practice Lost Kin, Traitor Lord, and Failed Champion so you are comfortable with them. It is possible to practice Pure Vessel without having to play through the entire Pantheon just to get destroyed by him in 10 seconds by starting a new save file in Godseeker mode. You will be locked in the Godhome area with all upgrades, charms, and abilities and all bosses will be unlocked in the Hall of Gods (except for Absolute Radiance, the final boss of the fifth Pantheon). Unlike in your main save file, Pure Vessel's statue will be available.

Pure Vessel is on another level altogether. All of his attacks deal two masks of damage and he is extremely fast, giving you very little time to react and counterattack. I suggest that you practice him for a while and once you get better at recognizing and reacting to his attacks it will not be nearly as overwhelming as it is initially. Here is a run where I defeat him on Radiant difficulty so you can see my strategy:

He starts out using four attacks:

  • a dashing stab that covers about half of the arena- I try to jump over him and pogo as he goes by
  • a wide arc triple slash with his nail- I try to again jump over and pogo him, attacking again after landing if possible
  • shooting a fan of daggers from ether side of the arena- if I see this coming I jump, dash through the daggers, and attack
  • appear in the air and slam down, creating pillars from the ground- quickly get to a safe gap and counterattack if possible

After hitting him a dozen or so times, he will stagger briefly, giving you time to heal. Once you get him to about 1/2 health he will add an additional attack where he uses focus to summon an expanding orb around him and other smaller orbs throughout the area that you must avoid. At about 1/3 health he add another attack were he lashes out with vertical void tendrils that you must be airborne or far enough away to avoid. Defeat the Pure Vessel to complete the Pantheon and unlock an achievement:

With all of this done you should be at 112% completion and ready to finish the playthrough:

External image

Before leaving Godhome, climb to the top of the Pantheon of the Knight door and interact with the device to open the way upward to the Pantheon of Hallownest. Climb up the wall to the left and enter the building at the top to find a Hot Spring. It's possible to jump and climb straight up to reach an area that contains the entrance to the Pantheon of Hallownest, a brutally difficult battle through basically every boss in the game culminating in a fight against Absolute Radiance. Completing this Pantheon is required to unlock an achievement and this will be the last task we complete. Refer to the Pantheon of Hallownest page for further information (note that we cannot even attempt this Pantheon until we obtain the Void Heart charm).

Drop down to the right to find an alcove with a bench and a device that you can attack to create a shortcut to the area below. Once this is done, hold cn_up + cn_Y to returned to the Junk Pit. Do so again to be returned to your Dreamgate in Dirtmouth. Have the Stag take you to Hidden Station. Equip the Kingsoul charm at the nearby bench, then head left into Ancient Basin and drop down to this area of the Abyss:

When you arrive here an opening in the ground will appear. Drop in and make your way through a mazelike area with numerous dead ends until you reach a room with a reflective spherical object. You will now have earned 54/63 achievements and completed the Classic mode playthrough. The remaining 9 achievements are explained in detail on subsequent pages and require completing the following tasks:

  • Complete the game in Steel Soul mode
  • Complete the game with 100% completion in Steel Soul mode
  • Complete the game in less than 10 hours
  • Complete the game in less than 5 hours
  • Complete the game in less than 20 hours with 100% completion
  • Leave Zote to die in Greenpath, then go back to find his corpse
  • Fully upgrade your Nail and kill the Nailsmith
  • Banish the Grimm Troupe
  • Complete the Pantheon of Hallownest

It's up to you what you want to do next. While you can complete everything except the Pantheon of Hallownest in a single Steel Soul playthrough, I suggest splitting it up between two more playthroughs: one in Steel Soul mode and one in Classic mode to meet time requirements. It's up to you which you'd rather do first, but I suggest Steel Soul mode to get more familiarity with working through the game so you have more experience for your speedrun.

You can try to complete the Pantheon of Hallownest whenever you want (using your existing Classic mode save file), but I suggest saving that for last.

Image 1

Goals for this playthrough:

  • Complete the game with 100% completion
  • Leave Zote to die in Greenpath
  • Kill the Nailsmith at his behest
  • Banish the Grimm Troupe

Start a new game in Steel Soul mode, which is exactly like Classic mode except death is permanent. If you die, your playthrough ends and you must start over. This would be a lot more difficult if you couldn't open the pause menu and "Quit to Menu" before dying. I suggest doing this as your second playthrough so you can work through the game again without any time constraints to get better familiarity with the areas, enemies, and bosses for your upcoming speedrun.

I will not be providing another detailed game walkthrough. You'll have to play through most of the game again and if you need direction, use my Classic mode guide. If you need help figuring out what you need to do to reach 100% completion, refer to the completion percentage breakdown on the Game Basics page. Since you only need 100% completion, there is leeway in terms of what you need to complete. I suggest not bothering with Godhome Pantheons, the Trial of the Fool, or the Delicate Flower quest for a Mask Shard (or three other Mask Shards since four are required for 1% progress) as they are on the more difficult/complex end of the scale. You will need to do pretty much everything else.

To increase survivability, prioritize finding Mask Shards, Charm Notches, and Pale Ore for Nail upgrades. The Fragile Strength and Fragile Heart charms (sold by Leg Eater in Fungal Wastes) are particularly strong. Be sure to collect as much geo as you can since you can never have too much.

Husk Guards, Belflys, Sporgs, Great Husk Sentries, Hive Guardians, Stalking Devouts, Traitor Lord, and Failed Champion all deal two masks of damage, so be careful when engaging them.

There are three remaining missable achievements that directly conflict with achievements unlocked in the first playthrough:

1) As you progress through Greenpath, do not rescue Zote from the Vengefly King in the area above the Stag Station. Return here later in your playthrough and you will find Zote's corpse:

As you approach the torch, an enemy will appear. Kill the enemy at each of these flames, then return to the Troupe Master and he will upgrade your familiar and mark three more flames on your map. Kill these three enemies and when you return to the Troupe Master, you will have to fight him. Defeat him and he will mark four flames on your map. Head to the one in the Distant Village area:

Speedrun

Image 6

Goals for this playthrough:

  • Complete the game in under five hours
  • Build completion to 100%, then complete the game in under 20 hours

Forward notes:

  • Time does not accumulate when you are in the pause menu (accessed via cn_start). You can sit in this menu indefinitely without any time being added to your run. Always open the pause menu when you aren't actively progressing.
  • The fastest run I can find using the current version of the game is under an hour, which shows that you have plenty of time to kill enemies for geo, make mistakes, deviate from the path for any of a number of reasons, and even quit to menu and reload from the previous bench (many times, if needed).
  • Collect as much geo as you can without wasting too much time. It's up to you to find the balance between pushing forward and killing enemies for geo, but as stated above, you do have a lot of extra time.
  • I don't plan for buying any of Cornifer's maps. This may be a problem for you if you need the map to navigate. You are welcome to buy them but it will require both a geo and time investment that I don't plan for.
  • I completed a Speedrun while writing this walkthrough and my final time was 2 hours 46 minutes. Having played through the game a few other times and completed the achievements, I had much more familiarity than you will. But this should illustrate that 5 hours is pretty lenient.
  • I based this plan on a guide from Steam by user Blankdud, so credit to him for laying the groundwork.

Start a new game in Classic mode. Follow the guide below. which is broken into segments with main segment objectives followed by my notes under each segment from the speedrun that I did while writing the walkthrough. The guide does not offer boss advice and only lays out a path through the game.

Segment 1

External image

Main objectives:

  • 1: Start of game, make your way through the Forgotten Crossroads to the area near Salubra's hut
  • 2: Interact with Sly so he relocates to Dirtmouth
  • 3: Unlock the Stag Station
  • 4: Defeat the False Knight and loot the geo chest
  • 5: Get the Vengeful Spirit spell

Segment notes:

  • After getting closed in a room with three flying enemies, take the lower left exit to find three geo deposits.
  • Kill the Gruz Mother and collect 50 geo.
  • I had 334 geo before unlocking the Stag Station.
  • I rescued the three nearby Grubs which only took a few minutes.
  • You can kill a Husk Guard on the way to False Knight for 45 geo.
  • My stats at the bench right before leaving the Shaman's hut: 18 min, 784 geo.

Segment 2

External image

Main objectives:

  • 1: Starting point, head up to Dirtmouth
  • 2: Buy the Gathering Swarm charm from Sly, then head to Greenpath
  • 3: Unlock the path forward at the toll machine for 50 geo
  • 4: Unlock the Stag Station
  • 5: Defeat Hornet and get the Mothwing Cloak

Segment notes:

  • Equip the Gathering Swarm charm so you don't have to physically collect geo yourself.
  • I met the Hunter for his journal.
  • I rescued two Grubs in the area.
  • Breakable wall to two geo deposits just past the toll bench.
  • Kill the first Moss Knight, the drop down back to the left and return to kill him a 2nd time for 40 more geo.
  • You can rescue Zote to get the 65 geo that the Vengefly King drops.
  • Cut a vine to unlock the shortcut directly under the Grub, then kill the three Moss Knights in the area.
  • There is a breakable wall just outside the Stag Station that leads to a Wanderer's Journal.
  • My stats at the bench in the nearby Stag Station: 38 min, 1036 geo

Segment 3

External image

Main objectives:

  • 1: Starting point, head to Queen's Station
  • 2: Unlock the Stag Station for 120 geo
  • 3: Defeat mushroom guys for a charm notch
  • A: [OPTIONAL] Buy the Fragile Strength charm from Leg Eater
  • B: [OPTIONAL] Rescue a Grub and open a shortcut
  • 4: Get the Mantis Claw

Segment notes:

  • There are two geo deposits in the first downward section and one on the top path moving right.
  • Drop down to the left, then return after the two big mushroom guys to fight a third for some extra geo.
  • I bought the Fragile Strength charm from Leg Eater which cost a total of 686 geo (86 to get him to show his inventory, 600 for the charm). This charm is a huge help but you must be careful not to die with it equipped or you would have to waste a bunch of time and geo traveling to Leg Eater so he can repair it.
  • Pogo and dash from a bounce shroom to a geo deposit. Find two more in the next screen down.
  • I took the optional left exit to rescue a grub, smash a few geo deposits, and hit a lever to open a shortcut.
  • I took a slight detour down for a few geo deposits and a bench before going to 4.
  • After getting the Mantis Claw I explored the immediate area for geo deposits and had 1099 geo before moving on.

Segment 4

Main objectives:

  • 1: Starting point, head to City of Tears
  • 2: Upgrade Nail at Nailsmith for 250 geo
  • A: [OPTIONAL] Rest at this bench (costs 150 geo to unlock)
  • 3: Defeat Soul Master to get Desolate Dive
  • 4: Loot the geo chest
  • 5: Find a Simple Key
  • 6: Unlock the Stag Station

Segment notes:

  • Find a Wanderer's Journal on the right side of the area above Mantis Village.
  • My time at the bench where you see Quirrel: 58 min
  • There is a visible geo chest on a path to the right of a lift tunnel.
  • Climb to the top of the platforms in the big open area to find a Hallownest Seal.
  • The bench at A is optional but if you die without using it, you will restart far away. Unlock and use it.
  • I dropped down to sell relics to Lemm, then hit the nearby lever and smashed a geo deposit before continuing upward.
  • I grabbed the Soul Twister charm on my way to Soul Master.
  • There is a Grub and a Hallownest seal in the area that you use Desolate Dive to get through.
  • Find a Wanderer's Journal on the left in the area with the Stag Station.
  • My stats after unlocking the Stag Station and saving at the nearby bench: 1 hour 15 min, 2663 geo.

Segment 5

Main objectives:

  • 1: Take the Stag to Dirtmouth to buy Lumafly Lantern from Sly for 1800 geo
  • 2: Take the Stag to Forgotten Crossroads
  • 3: Go to Salubra to buy a charm notch
  • 4: Desolate Dive into Crystal Peak
  • 5: Get the Crystal Heart for super dash
  • 6: Obtain the Dream Nail
  • 7: Wake up at the Seer
  • 8: Unlock the Stag Station

Segment notes:

  • I decided to take a few minutes to get a health upgrade here. I bought two Mask Shards from Sly for 150 and 500 geo, then I went to Grubfather for some geo and a 3rd Mask Shard (you can smash through the ceiling in the prior big area to get to three geo deposits). On the way back to Dirtmouth I climbed up the well shaft for a Hallownest Seal. I then went to the Queen's Station Stag Station and platformed through the thorned path to the right for a 4th Mask Shard. If you don't have 500 extra geo available, you can find a mask shard in Forgotten Crossroads in an area with Goams below the False Knight area or another if you make the trek down to rescue Bretta by Mantis Village (it will then be in her unlocked hut in Dirtmouth).
  • I had to buy a charm from Salubra (Steady Body was the cheapest) so I had five total in order to be able to buy a charm notch from her from 150 geo. I probably should have rescued Bretta and gotten the Dash Master charm after getting the Mantis Claw, which would have saved me a bunch of geo.
  • I rescued the Grub by going through a vertical conveyor/spike path.
  • I took a slight detour and fought the Crystal Guardian for the 385 geo he drops.
  • I went a little out of the way to find a Wanderer's Journal and Desolate Dive into a room with geo deposits.
  • I rescued the Grub in the room with the slamming pistons.
  • I rescued the Grub in the Crystal Heart area.
  • Stats after unlocking the Stag Station and saving at the nearby bench: 1 hour 36 min, 1260 geo

Segment 6

Main objectives:

  • 1: Take the Stag to City Storerooms
  • 2: Unlock this door with the Simple key
  • 3: Defeat Dung Defender and flip the switch
  • 4: Get Isma's Tear
  • 5: Leave the Royal Waterways via Emilitia's room

Segment notes:

  • I sold my relics to Lemm on the way down.
  • The yellow arrow shows a detour I made that took about eight minutes:

External image

  • I went left all the way left on the upper path to open a shortcut to Fungal Wastes. I grabbed the Dash Master charm and rescued Bretta, then headed back. I took the lower path to smash a geo deposit, then dropped into the water to get another Mask Shard to the left. I backtracked right, broke a wall to get to a grub, then and used Desolate Dive to reach a bench. I then broke a wooden shortcut barrier to the right and continued to Dung Defender.
  • Remember to break the wooden shortcut barrier to the right of Dung Defender.
  • I rescued the Grub in the area with Isma's Tear.
  • I didn't quit to check time but had 2880 geo when I got to the end of the segment.

Segment 7

External image

Main objectives:

  • 1: Starting point
  • A: Get the Pale Ore
  • B: Upgrade the Nail for 800 geo
  • 2: Tricky jump off of a breakable object to the ledge above
  • 3: Destroy the Lurien the Watcher
  • 4: Unlock the Stag Station

Segment notes:

  • The Pale Ore and Nail upgrade were planned as optional, bit it makes such a big difference that you definitely should do it.
  • Use Desolate Dive to rescue the Grub on the way to the Pale Ore.
  • Be careful with Belflys in the path below the Pale Ore.
  • Since I had 3100 geo at this point, I stopped prioritizing killing enemies and going out of my way for geo deposits.
  • The tricky jump at #2 is done like this. It may take a few tries, so if you don't make it, drop down to the left and leave the area, then return to reset the breakable object and try it again.
  • Definitely go left here and save at the bench as the upcoming Watcher Knight battle is tough.
  • My stats at this bench: 2 hours 3 minutes, 2649 geo.
  • If things get messy in the room below with the Great Husk Sentry, quit to menu before you die.
  • Be sure to hit the switch to the right of the bench to open a shortcut.
  • I didn't hassle saving the Grub as it's guarded by a Great Husk Sentry.
  • Cut the chandelier chain to kill one of the Watcher Knights.
  • Loot the geo chest and get the Hallownest seal above the Watcher Knight area.
  • Rest at the bench on your way back down just in case.
  • My stats after unlocking the Stag Station and resting at the nearby bench: 2 hours 13 min, 3343 geo.

Segment 8

External image

Main objectives:

  • 1: Take the Stag to Queen's Station
  • 2: Defeat Uumu and destroy Monomon the Teacher

Segment notes:

  • I took a detour to Leg Eater to buy and equip Fragile Heart (along with Fragile Strength).
  • I considered getting the charm notch in Fog Canyon but it didn't seem worthwhile.
  • Rest at the bench in Teacher's Archives just in case.

Segment 9

External image

Main objectives:

  • 1: Starting point, head to Distant Village through Queen's Gardens
  • A: [OPTIONAL] Rest at the bench
  • B: [OPTIONAL] Rest at the bench
  • 2: Destroy Herrah the Beast
  • 3: Unlock the Stag Station

Segment notes:

  • Rest at the bench on your way out of Teacher's Archives.
  • I strongly suggest resting at both benches on your way through Queen's Gardens as there is some tricky platforming.
  • Be careful descending into Deepnest as there are spikes everywhere.
  • Stalking Devout are tough. Be careful with them.
  • Rescue the Grub that's right along your path in Beast's Den.

Segment 10

External image

Segment objectives:

  • 1: Take the Stag to Dirtmouth
  • 2: Defeat the Hollow Knight in the Temple of the Black Egg

Segment notes:

  • My stats at the Dirtmouth bench: 2 hours 36 min, 2908 geo.
  • Get the Mask Shard in Bretta's hut.
  • Optional: buy two Mask Skards from Sly for 2300 geo to gain another health upgrade. If you don't have 800 geo for the second, you can instead get the Mask Shard in the area with numerous Goams in Forgotten Crossroads.
  • Interact with the tablet in the temple to be able to see your completion percentage (I was at 33%).
  • Rest at the bench, then head in to the final battle.
  • Hollow Knight is not normally difficult but remember that you deal less damage and have less health than you did in your full playthrough. Your nail has no increased range and you don't have Shade Cloak so you can't dash to prevent taking damage.

Defeat the Hollow Knight in less than 5 hours and two achievements will unlock:

Speedrun 1

Complete the game in under 10 hours

Speedrun 1
Offline Game ModeSingle PlayerTime/Date

Speedrun 2

Complete the game in under 5 hours

Speedrun 2
1 guideOffline Game ModeSingle PlayerTime/Date

My final time for the playthrough I did as I wrote this guide was 2 hours 46 min 41 sec, but my first speedrun when I was newer to the game took around 4 hours.

You now have at least 15 hours to get to 100% completion, which should be more than enough time. Refer to the completion percentage breakdown on the Game Basics page to see exactly what you need to do to get to 100%. Remember that 12% can be skipped, so don't bother with the Pantheons, the Trial of the Fool, or the Delicate Flower quest.

Once your completion is at 100%, return to the Temple of the Black Egg to defeat the Hollow Knight and if your time played is less than 20 hours, an achievement will unlock:

Speed Completion

Achieve 100% game completion and finish the game in under 20 hours

Once all this is done, your Speedrun playthrough is complete.

As of the writing of this walkthrough, only a handful of people have completed the Pantheon of Hallownest and the associated achievement carries a fairly hefty ratio. It's tough, but with practice and persistence, it's completely doable.

Load your main Classic save file and head to the Junk Pit through the shortcut below the Nailsmith's hut in the City of Tears. Use the DreamNail on the Godseeker NPC to be taken to Godhome. Climb back up to the top and since you have the Void Heart charm, the entrance to the Pantheon of Hallownest will be active:

The first four Pantheons contained 10 bosses each. The Pantheon of Hallownest contains 43, some of which are not found anywhere else. This is the true test of skill and endurance and a successful run can take 45 minutes to an hour. The bosses ramp up in difficulty as you progress and the final three- Nightmare King Grimm, Pure Vessel, and Absolute Radiance- are the toughest bosses in the game.

For charms, I used Fragile Strength, Fragile Heart, Quick Focus, and Mark of Pride up until the final bench. I'd then swap Quick Focus for Shaman Stone since I found Abyss Shriek to be so strong against Absolute Radiance. Many people seem to love Sharp Shadow, but I couldn't get accustomed to the extra dash distance so I never used it.

I'm not sure how helpful it will be, but here is my successful run:

Overall the run was pretty sloppy. I had a particularly awful Absolute Radiance second phase and barely squeaked out the victory, needing to make the final ascent and defeat the third phase without taking any damage. Leading up to this run, I had two failures at Absolute Radiance and a few at the obnoxious Markoth/Grey Prince Zote/Failed Champion/Nightmare King Grimm stretch. But I went back and practiced all four for a while to ensure that I wouldn't have difficulty with them in subsequent runs.

Flailing through bosses and barely defeating them may have been fine in the main game, but you need to be able to be able to dominate each boss if you want to have a chance at completing this Pantheon. Many of the bosses are easy enough, but unless you're some sort of gaming savant, you're going to have to spend time practicing the difficult bosses until reacting to their attacks becomes effortless and routine. If you can't handle every boss like Neo vs. Agent Smith at the end of The Matrix, you should probably keep practicing. I think about how badly Pure Vessel crushed me initially and now he might as well be the False Knight. I practiced and practiced until I knew every nuance of the battle so nothing was left to chance. I never got to that point with Absolute Radiance, though, even after a few hours of practice. I could never get any sort of consistency with the second phase and as a result, I could only beat him about half the time. I started doing real runs anyway and figured that that was good enough to get it done eventually. And it was.

The bosses in this Pantheon are basically the "Ascended" versions from the Hall of Gods except they don't do double damage. They have increased health and some have changes to their arena (Markoth and Uumuu, for example, have no solid ground at the bottom).

I'm assuming you had to get at least a basic level of mastery with the tougher bosses from the first four pantheons, but I'll give some thoughts on specific bosses that I found troublesome:

  • Sisters of Battle: This can get hectic since you're fighting all three at once. You just have less time to react and counterattack because the battle moves so much faster.
  • Markoth: UGH. This is was a much more difficult battle for me than it probably should have been. More often than not I'd take a beating from this guy and end up with less than full health for Zote. Practice didn't help much as it just seemed so random. Super annoying as it's 30+ minutes into the run.
  • Grey Prince Zote: He can be erratic with his attacks, but as long as you practice it shouldn't be bad. Don't just assume you are good with him. Practice.
  • Failed Champion: Pro tip- use the Dream Nail on him after you knock him down. If you're quick, you can hit him three times (each hit gives 1/3 soul meter), then attack the maggot the necessary two times before he gets up. After you finish him off you have several seconds to heal and/or Dream Nail him some more.
  • Nightmare King Grimm: He is fast and hits for two masks, but if you practice him enough you should be able to react to everything he does quickly and without taking damage. Heal when he breaks apart into bats.
  • Pure Vessel: Like with NKG, once I had practiced enough this became completely routine. He is fast and hits for two masks but his attacks are easily telegraphed. Here is a run I did on Radiant difficulty in the Hall of Gods if you'd care to see my techniques.
  • Absolute Radiance: This is it- the encounter you just spent 45+ minutes grinding towards. You have to get to him once before you can practice him in the Hall of Gods. The first phase isn't that bad. Be sure to understand how the tracking projectiles behave (which is important for the second and third phases, as well). Spikes on half of the floor can make avoiding his other attacks difficult. The rays of light attack gives you very little time to react. He will move to the center and spam downward swords near the end. The second phase is brutal. You have to get close to attack him but the closer you are, the more dangerous his attacks are. It's a tough balance between waiting for him to move into a favorable position and trying to get damage in so the battle doesn't drag on for too long. The ascent can be rough if you don't get into a good rhythm. I found it best to stay on one side for the third phase, jump over the projectiles, and attack or use Abyss Shriek when he got close and there was an opening. It's bad enough that this encounter is brutally unforgiving, but having to spend 45 minutes fighting your way here for a chance at completion is awful.

I'll again mention the locked door to the left of the Hall of Gods entrance with 16 nodes around it. Unlocking this door requires completing the first four Pantheons with bindings active. Bindings are handicaps reduce nail damage, cap your health at four masks, unequip all charms, and limit your Soul meter to 1/3 capacity. There are 16 possible binding combinations (four bindings, four Pantheons) and you must complete eight for the door to open. You can use your Dream Nail on a blue dreamcatcher inside to make it so there are Lifeblood Cocoons at every bench in every Pantheon. These Lifeblood Cocoons will provide three Lifeseeds when the 8th binding light is lit, four Lifeseeds when the 12th binding light is lit, and five Lifeseeds when all 16 binding lights are lit. I personally didn't bother with this bindings door but you might consider it if you think the extra work is worth the reward.

Completing this Pantheon will come down to practice and persistence. It can be demoralizing to fail at a boss you expect to beat easily 30 minutes into a run. It hurts to make the 45 minute slog all the way to Absolute Radiance and get crushed (possibly at the final phase). There are no shortcuts, but you have the ability to practice in the Hall of Gods and you will need to at great lengths to ensure that you know each battle inside and out. Keep at it and you will eventually complete the Pantheon of Hallownest to unlock an achievement:

Embrace the Void

Ascend the Pantheon of Hallownest and take your place at its peak

Embrace the Void

If this was your last achievement, congratulations on a well earned completion!
