Mortal Kombat 11

Mortal Kombat 11 is the latest fighting game from NetherRealm Studios. The achievement list is actually quite a bit more forgiving than years past and easily over half of them can be obtained while mindlessly hitting the cn_A button, while doing something else such as watching TV. The achievements are spaced out fairly well across all the games modes meaning you'll be spending your time seeing all that Mortal Kombat has to offer. They break down as follows:

  • 26 achievements for performing fatalities/brutalities
  • 4 achievements for completing towers
  • 3 achievements for completing the games tutorial mode
  • 3 achievements for completing the story mode
  • 6 achievements for exploring the game's Krypt
  • 5 achievements for multiplayer battles
  • 11 more achievements for random gameplay

Overall, the game will take 40-50 hours to complete. This is mostly due to a single achievement that requires you to complete 250 towers. But the rest of the game is fairly easy. The games tutorial mode offers the only real challenge to complete, due to the complex nature of juggling combos and such. Tower and story mode difficulty do not affect achievements whatsoever, so feel free to set the game to whatever difficulty you are most comfortable with.

If you ever have difficulty beating a certain fight or even just want to earn achievements in the background while doing anything else, you can set the AI to fight for you. With a good build, you can beat any tower on hard mode while watching tv and only casually glancing over to hit cn_A to start the next fight every now and then. There is a quite powerful Noob Saibot build that never lost me a single battle in over 200 towers. To create him yourself, you will want to go to Kustomise -> Characters -> Noob Saibot -> Create custom variation. From here choose any gear you want and then hit cn_RB and choose any skin you want. Next hit cn_RB and choose the following abilities:

  • (air) tele-slam
  • Sickle snag
  • Shadow slide

When you have them setup hit cn_RB once again to adjust your AI behavior as follows:

  • Grappling: 5
  • Rushdown: 5
  • Kombos: 20
  • Reversal: 20
  • Zoning: 0
  • Runaway: 0

Hit cn_B a few times to back out to the main menu and save your character. This build is going around online and is being called AI Noob and its winning battles for people left and right. An amazing thing about AI builds is that they perform fatalities and brutalities for you after almost every win! So you can totally earn every fatality/brutality achievement in the game and never input a single button combo. This Noob build is quite strong but almost every character is strong with a full 30 points in Kombos and Reversal if you'd rather use somebody else.

There are quite a few types of currency in the game and all are earned by performing different tasks and used for different purposes. A general rundown of the different ones are as follows:

Koins: earned by just playing the game. Everything you do earns koins. These are used to open regular chests in the Krypt to unlock most of the games hidden gems. most chests cost in the 1,000 - 15,000 range.

Soul gems: earned by winning fights. These are used to unlock more items in the Krypt. most cost 100 soul gems to open

Hearts: earned by performing fatalities/brutalities. These are used to unlock the ultra-rare chests in the Krypt and have the games rarest and best rewards. Small heart chests cost 100 and large chests cost 250. Small heart chests cannot be opened till they are unlocked by spearing a flaming lantern close by. Some are trickier to find than others. The large chests have Shao Kahn's head on the top of them and you must smash it with a hammer before you can open it.

Time crystals: These are earned by leveling up while you play the game and by playing the story mode. These are strictly used in the in-game store. Hit cn_RT while at the games main menu and you will see a store of rotating items for sale each day. You can buy anything from gear to skins to character victory/intro animations. I recommend only buying the animations as they are the rarest things to find in the game and you need to unlock 5 of each for later achievements. They are expensive at 750 crystals each but it makes the later grind much easier.

To start, you're going to want to knock the game's tutorials out as early as possible. They will teach you the game's mechanics and make you a better player, making all the achievements in this game much easier to obtain. From the game's main menu, you will want to select Learn and then Tutorial. You will see 4 rows of lessons; Basic, Advanced, Strategy, and Character. For now select Basic. Follow the onscreen prompts to learn how to play the game. There are 6 lessons in this tutorial (lessons can be completed in any order at any time).

  • Basic movement and Attacks
  • Blocking and Throws
  • Environment Interaction
  • Special Moves and Kombo Attacks
  • Fatal Blows and Amplified Special Moves
  • Basic Kombos

Once you have completed all 6 lessons, you will earn your first achievement for the game.

There are 12 chapters to the game's story mode and there are 3 achievements that can be earned. Each chapter has 4-5 battles and the cutscenes CAN be skipped if you wish to at any time, by hitting cn_start and selecting "skip". The 12 chapters are as follows:

  1. Cassie Cage: 4 fights
  2. Kotal Kahn: 4 fights
  3. Liu Kang/Kuno Lao: 4 fights (you choose which fighter each battle)
  4. Scorpion/Sub-Zero: 4 fights (you choose which fighter each battle)
  5. Jade: 4 fights
  6. Johnny Cage: 4 fights
  7. Kitana: 4 fights
  8. Sonya Blade: 4 fights
  9. Jax/Jacqui Briggs: 5 fights (you choose which fighter each battle)
  10. Scorpion: 4 fights
  11. Raiden: 5 fights
  12. Liu Kang: 4 fights

After the first battle of the 7th chapter, you will earn the achievement for completing 50% of the story mode, and after the 4th fight of the 12th chapter, you will get your 100% achievement. After the credits roll, you will also get the achievement for watching them (even if you skip them). Also of note: You are able to earn the achievement for watching the credits much sooner if you wish. From the game's main menu you can select "Kustomise -> Kollection -> Endings -> Credits" but you will see the ending credits a lot while playing as you get one for each tower completion, so there is no need to do it early.

I have both good news and bad news about the towers achievements. First the bad news... You have to complete a minimum of 250 towers to earn all the achievements in this game. The good news however is that you don't have to physically play ANY of them. You can do them all manually OR you can choose to have the AI battle for you. (look in the general hints/tips section of this walkthrough for information on how to set this up), or you can skip most of them almost entirely!!!!

Time to start our first tower. Select Konquer -> Klassic towers. The achievements in this section do not care what the length of the tower is so we will do the smallest one. Novice only has 5 fights to complete. Select the novice tower and choose your character. Hit cn_A to start the tower or hit cn_X first to turn on AI mode. After 4 regular battles and 1 boss battle, you will earn your first tower achievement.

After selecting your character to start each tower, you'll be able to hit cn_X to apply a consumable. Some will give you boosts for the entire tower and others are just for a single fight. There are a wide variety of consumables available. Some let you regain health during a battle, others increase your damage, some let you call in other fighters for help during the match, etc. You will have to use 100 total for the next 2 achievements and you are able to use 1 tower consumable per tower and 3 fight consumables per match. The fastest way to earn these is by doing the time trial towers and by unlocking random chests in the Krypt. In any case, either use the ones you like the best for the battles you find difficult or just burn the ones you don't think you'll need on the battles you were gonna win anyway. After 50 and 100 used, you'll have the following.

10 towers down, 240 to go. The easiest way to do the remaining 240 is to head to Klassic towers and select "endless tower". Simply start the first fight and quit out. This counts as 1 tower completion even though you did not win a single fight. This is long, boring, and tedious. There is another way however to "skip" all the remaining towers and still make a lot of progress towards other achievements. If you go from Konquer -> Towers of Time, you will come to a set of towers that rotate in and out each day. These can be completed for a lot of rewards. We mostly want to be earning consumables and character intro/victory animations however. After you complete the Towers of Time tutorial, the top left tower in Towers of Time is character specific. You choose a character and can only work on that character's towers until it is completed. There are 3 phases to these battles and 5 towers per phase. Each tower requires you to complete the previous tower and sometimes more to unlock. Sometimes you have to pay soul gems (earned by winning fights). Sometimes you have to pay hearts (earned by performing fatalities/brutalities). Other times, you have to perform a certain amount of moves with the specific character such as Krushing blows. If you are having the AI fight these battles for you they don't often perform these movies so you may have to load up a novice tower and do them manually yourself as only tower battles count towards these requirements. It's a bit tedious to go through all this, but it will be worth it in the end when it comes time to earn the intro/victory animation achievements. Tower 5 of phase 3 will always earn an intro and victory animation. This will net you 15 more towers towards your 250. If you do this for 5 characters total you will have all the intro/victory animations needed to earn their achievements and 75 towers completed towards your 250. There are other ways to earn intro/victory animations, so do not worry if you do not get all of them here. If you do earn any however, make sure to equip them by going to Kustomize -> Character -> Select your Character and choose a variation. Hit cn_RB once towards kosmetics and select cinematics. Make sure every available box is checked. Once you have 5 of each equipped across all characters, you will have the 2 following achievements. If you'd rather not take the time to earn these here, you are still able to earn them in the Krypt later as well as purchase them for time crystals in the game's store. However you decide is just fine.

There is one more achievement we can get in the Towers of Time while we are here. There is a random single fight tower that rotates in and out every few days that is a group battle tower. Group battle is a 3vs1 tower where 3 players each choose a combatant and take turns battling an AI enemy with a large amount of health. When it is not your turn, you will have the opportunity to affect the battle by hitting buttons and throwing things into the fight or hindering the enemy in some way. You do not have to win this fight, just play it. Once you have done so, you will earn the following:

Now all that's left is to keep winning towers. No way around this. Just pick the shortest ones or let the AI battle them out while watching TV. However you decide to do this, its a grind.

You will have to perform 2 different fatalities for each character in the base game to earn the following achievements. You can do this the easy and boring way, or the harder but more active way. If you let the AI fight for you, it will perform a fatality/brutality 90% of the battles won. After 2-4 battles, it almost always performs both of their fatalities whether you have their 2nd unlocked in the Krypt yet or not. You do not need to unlock each character's 2nd fatality in the Krypt to input them manually. All unlocking them does is add the information to the move list for your character's pause menu. In contrast, you DO need to unlock brutalities in the Krypt to be able to perform them.

Even though the Krypt is available at the start, it's a good idea to wait a bit to enter. There are a LOT of unlockables in the Krypt and 99% of the chests are randomized so no true guide will help unlock anything that you are looking for. When you load up the Krypt, you will be in 3rd-person mode. There will be 2 treasure chests next to you. Open them for a modest amount of hearts and koins. Once you open these, you will see a door open in front of you and Shao Kahn's hammer in the distance. Pick up the hammer and you can now hit cn_X to swing it and destroy damaged walls and vases. Feel free to open koin chests while running around the Krypt, but make sure to save your first 50,000 koins for a later achievement. While you explore the Krypt, make sure to often be holding cn_RT to make your character run. Not only is it a faster way to move around but you will also earn the following achievement after running for 5 miles.

Walking forward with the hammer, you can break the bottom of the gate in front of you to gain access to the next area. You will be in a large courtyard. Take note of all the swinging bodies in the trees and such. We will have to come back to these later for another achievement. Walk to the left of this new room and you will see a glowing circle on the wall, and just to the left of this will be a weak wall you can damage with your hammer. This white glowing circle is Kronika's time vault. You can spend an amount of koins to reload opened chests with new loot. Once you have unlocked most chests in the Krypt, you will notice you still don't have NEARLY everything unlocked so you will need to periodically reload all the chests to keep going if you so wish. Ignore this for now. Break the wall to your left. In this new area, you will see a gong. Smash the gong with your hammer to earn another achievement and to unlock a new area of the Krypt.

Going through this newly opened gate, you will come to the Forge. There are no achievements tied to the forge so, for now, we can head to the right across the mountain pass and towards the Shrine. The shrine lets you gamble with koins to unlock items of increasing rarity with the more koins you spend. It IS a gamble however, as you will often spend 100,000 max koins and end up with a few consumables, instead of a character skin, victory animation or something useful. Donate 50,000 koins once to the Shrine for your next achievement.

Now you are free to spend koins at will. Keep opening chests as you progress through the Krypt, until you reach 200 chests opened. There are plenty around and even if you don't find them all, you can always use Kronika's time vault to reload previously opened ones and keep going.

Walk north of the Shrine to see a cutscene of a meteor crashing down. You can break open meteors with your hammer for rewards. This particular meteor will have the Gem of Living inside, which you will need soon. You will notice to your right, a row of treasure chests that cannot be opened. Each with a spike and a picture of a different fighter in the game. This is where performing the 250 towers beforehand comes in handy. These chests can only be opened by performing a fatality on a specific character 50 times in the game's towers. If you want Sub-Zero's head you have to perform 50 fatalities on him and so forth for all characters. These chests are NOT random and all contain gear, animations, and skins for each character. If you have not yet unlocked intro/victory animations for your earlier achievements you will get more here. If you do not own any heads in your inventory simply back out and start up any tower and win the first fight. Perform a fatality and quit the tower at the start of the next fight. If you don't leave to go back to the main menu, you can simply restart the same tower against the same opponent and continue however many times as needed to obtain their head. Once you have it, come back to the Krypt and interact with their spike to obtain the next achievement. If you keep spiking heads and unlocking more chests, eventually you will start to gain access to a throne room with the rarest of the Krypt's unlockables. No achievements here, but some handy rewards.

The last Krypt achievement will take a little bit of time to unlock. Take your newly acquired gem of living back to the first gong you hit early on in the Krypt. Facing the gong, you will see a door to your left. The Gem of Living will open this door. This will take you through the gardens. Stick to the left and you will find what looks like a jail cell and a lever. Pull the lever, and inside the cell you will find Motoro's Cracked Horn. This horn is needed to unlock the door north of the head spikes we found earlier, so head back there. Use Motoro's Horn on the door and walk forward a bit. Pull the lever to head down an elevator and you will be in Goro's Lair. Walk forward to find yourself in Goro's Great Hall. Keep heading south to enter Goro's Throne Room. Directly in front of you will be the dead body of Goro himself, still sitting on his throne. If you look to the right, you will see 2 paths you can take. The left path is what we want here. Following this path will bring us to the armory. In the southernmost tip of this room, embedded in a wooden stake, you will see Scorpion's Spear. Grab this. Now you will need to run around the Krypt, looking for hanging bodies. Whenever you spot one, get close and you will see a button prompt to hit cn_Y to spear him. Doing so, will earn you 1-3 hearts. These bodies respawn randomly every time you leave the Krypt and come back. Simply progress through the Krypt, spearing bodies and reloading the Krypt every once and a while to spear 50 bodies. If at any point you want to know how many you have left, you can hit cn_LT from the game's main menu and scroll over to your career stats. Scrolling down to "offline history", you will see the number of bodies you have speared.

For the next set of achievements select, Fight -> AI Battle. Before you can fight in these battles, you must assign a group of defenders. Select Assign Defenders and pick any 3 fighters you want. These do not matter for the achievement at all. After your defenders are chosen, select Find a Battle. From here, you will be shown a selection of teams to fight against. Select any one you want and you will be taken to the character selection screen. Choose 3 fighters to attack the enemy team. After selecting your team you can hit cn_back twice during the loading screen to speed up the battles to 4x speed, making these super fast. You can fight a maximum of 5 fights a day doing this and you will need 10 and 25 battles total for the next 2 achievements. Wins and losses don't matter. It only matters that you play the battles 10 and 25 times.

Now we move on to the multiplayer portion of the game. For the first achievement, we will select Fight -> Online -> King of the Hill. You don't have to actually play any matches here. Just hit cn_start to enter AFK mode and you will avoid being queued up for battle. Just watch others fight. At the end of each battle, you have the option to award respect points to the victor. Always assign 10 points and this will be earned in just 10 matches viewed.

Back out of King of the Hill but stay in the Online lobby. This time select Kasual Versus. You will have to fight in 50 online battles. Win or lose, it does not matter. Just complete 50 matches and the achievement is yours.

Now it's time to mop up the remaining achievements that you may have gotten already, but might not have through normal play. Start a match on very easy or against a 2nd controller if you have one. Do not fight. Instead, hit cn_LT repeatedly to flip your player's stance over and over. Do this 50 times.

Now fight 10 more battles. But this time, instead of killing your opponent when it says "FINISH HIM", back off to mid-range distance and hit cn_LT+cn_down repeatedly. This will activate a mercy which gives your opponent a little bit of life to continue the fight. Certain brutalities in the game require a mercy to be performed first. Just win the match 10 times after performing a mercy.

If by miracle, you still haven't spilled 10,000 pints of blood yet, simply repeatedly uppercut a 2nd controller over and over to keep spilling blood. Realistically, this will be one of the earliest achievements you will get in the game without even going for it.

Speaking of uppercuts, the easiest brutality in the game is to simply get the winning hit of a battle with an uppercut. The only requirement is that you do not block any attacks during the winning round. If you manage to do this, you knock the enemy's head right off and completely skip the "FINISH HIM" fatality opportunity. You'll likely get many of these by accident through normal gameplay, especially if you do a lot of AI battles. Do any 100 of these brutalities for the next 2 achievements.

Lastly, we will need to go to Kustomise to create a specific build for the character D'Vorah for the last achievement. From the main menu, go to Kustomise -> Characters -> D'Vorah. Hit the cn_RB twice to select abilities. Make sure the Mother Bug ability is equipped and save your character. Now go into any fight with your custom build and attack your opponent until they are almost dead. At this point, stop fighting and let them start hitting you. When YOU are almost dead you will die and respawn as a giant bug flying around the screen. Simply attack and kill your opponent as this bug for the final achievement.
