Big Crown: Showdown

Hello and welcome to the walkthrough for Big Crown: Showdown, a medieval-themed party game that can cater for up to four players (locally or online). Players will navigate short auto-scrolling stages, while avoiding hazards and the attacks of fellow players, to reach the end with the most lives left. The number of lives left for each player will then be tallied up (alongside any additional points gained for knocking players off the stage) at the end of each stage, with a 'game' taking place over multiple stages until one player reaches the required number of points, thus winning the 'game'.

The game doesn't really diverge from this template at all (apart from the ability to create a custom game with different settings) and is one of those games where you've seen everything on offer after a few minutes. The game was evidently designed for families, but I'm not sure how they would be reached with a budget indie title. However, the game was included in Games with Gold in July 2019 which has brought some interest to the game.

One interested group will certainly be achievement hunters, as Big Crown: Showdown has a simple list which unfortunately involves several hours of grinding. 16 of the game's 19 achievements are as simple as they come and can be easily obtained within an hour, while the remaining achievements involve grinding for several hours (for knocking items over, picking up coins and distance traveled). There are three online achievements in the game which involve joining a custom match, completing an online match and completing an online match with four players. These will pose more problems as the Games with Gold interest dies down, so if you are reading this further down the line I would recommend to set up a boosting session on the site, they will only take 10 minutes for everyone to get.

Before we continue, ensure that you have four controllers as they will be required to gain one achievement. If you are struggling for controllers then Rock Band instruments reportedly work, otherwise you could use Windows 10 game streaming and hook up your Xbox 360 controllers. It is also worth mentioning that you can't even start a local match without at least two controllers. So if you are short of controllers then I wouldn't recommend starting this game.

Let's dive straight into the action.

Local

We shall start by targeting the achievement that requires four controllers first, earning many other achievements along the way.

After watching the cutscene that sets up the premise for the game, you will be at the main menu. Press cn_A on the controllers you want to use and sign in as a guest to join (you will know they have joined once the character is off the sofa and standing). Now select Local > Custom Game > Create to reach a set-up menu. Select any one of the 15 maps (you need only select it once as it will loop) and then press cn_Y to go into the match settings. For now, set the Victory Points to 5 (so we can end the four-player match quickly) and leave the rest of the settings as they are. Back out (cn_B) and then begin the match (cn_X). As soon as you enter the lobby, you will unlock your first achievement:

Game Designer in Big Crown: Showdown
Make a custom game
  • Unlocked by 4,963 tracked gamers (51% - TA Ratio = 1.39) 9,697

In the lobby, a 60-second countdown will take place before the game begins. A TV should be visible somewhere in the room. If it isn't then don't worry, as you can try again in a future lobby (it seems to spawn most of the time). Find it and bring it near to the centre grating (but not on top of it). Ready up (cn_Y) to open the portal and then ensure that your character punches the TV in (with cn_X) to unlock:

Square Eyes in Big Crown: Showdown
Knock the Knight's TV into the portal
  • Unlocked by 3,150 tracked gamers (32% - TA Ratio = 1.75) 9,697

The game will now load and after a further 5-second countdown, the stage will begin. Let your other controllers idle and advance through the stage using the cn_LS to control your character and the cn_A button to jump over gaps. Try to keep your lives intact (which shouldn't be too difficult), if you lose all of them then you will be out for the rest of the stage.

Along the way, you will see several glowing chests. These contain coins, which are the currency used to purchase hats for your character (more on this later). Punch it a few times and it will open, with four coins coming out. Sometimes a coin will fall off the edge, which is unavoidable. If all four coins are on the floor, quickly pick them all up to unlock two achievements:

Ka-Ching in Big Crown: Showdown
Ka-Ching21 (20)
Collect your first coin
  • Unlocked by 8,875 tracked gamers (92% - TA Ratio = 1.04) 9,697

Greedy Guts in Big Crown: Showdown
Collect all of the coins from a treasure chest
  • Unlocked by 5,033 tracked gamers (52% - TA Ratio = 1.38) 9,697

I would recommend not spending any of these coins for now, saving them for when we have enough to buy all of the necessary hats for 'Fashionista'.

Keep on going, collecting the coins from any chests further ahead. As you do this, your idle controllers will lose lives (for not staying on the screen). They should lose all five of their lives before the end, prematurely ending the stage and unlocking:

So Near Yet So Far in Big Crown: Showdown
Be the last one alive but don't cross the finishing line
  • Unlocked by 5,747 tracked gamers (59% - TA Ratio = 1.29) 9,697

If you were able to keep all five of your lives before then, the game will end with you being victorious. However, we'll assume that a life was lost and the game will continue into the second stage. Now for the next stage, don't press cn_X at all and after the other controllers lose all of their lives you will unlock:

Pacifist in Big Crown: Showdown
Pacifist79 (50)
Complete a round without punching
  • Unlocked by 3,849 tracked gamers (40% - TA Ratio = 1.58) 9,697

At this point, you should have reached five points (one point tallied for each remaining life) and won the match. You will then be brought to the podium and unlock a few more achievements:

Welcome to the Showdown in Big Crown: Showdown
Complete your first game
  • Unlocked by 7,778 tracked gamers (80% - TA Ratio = 1.11) 9,697

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner in Big Crown: Showdown
Win your first game
  • Unlocked by 6,134 tracked gamers (63% - TA Ratio = 1.25) 9,697

Sofa Knights in Big Crown: Showdown
Complete a Local Multiplayer match
  • Unlocked by 3,882 tracked gamers (40% - TA Ratio = 1.58) 9,697

Friends with Benefits in Big Crown: Showdown
Play with 4 people locally
  • Unlocked by 1,305 tracked gamers (13% - TA Ratio = 2.72) 9,697

Now you won't need four controllers again, so go down to only two controllers and launch another local custom game with 5 Victory Points needed. After the countdown, bring your two controllers out into the open and have your character draw his turtle shield with cn_RT and direct it toward the edge. Have the other controller punch it (their back facing the edge) and they will be knocked back off the stage, losing a life and unlocking two more achievements:

I.G. Knight in Big Crown: Showdown
Get your first knock-out
  • Unlocked by 8,423 tracked gamers (87% - TA Ratio = 1.07) 9,697

Turtle Knight in Big Crown: Showdown
Get your first shield deflection knock-out
  • Unlocked by 4,042 tracked gamers (42% - TA Ratio = 1.54) 9,697

Finish up the match for additional coins and we will then be done with the quick local achievements.

Online

Back out all the way to the main menu and disconnect your second controller for a bit. We will now knock out the online achievements. First, select Online > Custom Game > Find to see if there are any custom games available. If there are, then join that game and as soon as you enter the lobby you will unlock:

Games Design Intern in Big Crown: Showdown
Join a custom game
  • Unlocked by 3,711 tracked gamers (38% - TA Ratio = 1.61) 9,697

Quit the lobby if you have no intention of playing the game and we will wrap up the remaining online achievements. Back out from the Custom Game menu and instead select Quick Play. Ensure that there are four players in the lobby, quit out immediately if there aren't before the end of the countdown. If there are four players present at the beginning of the first stage, you will get the achievement for playing a four-player online match, even if someone leaves during the match. The default settings will be on (5 lives, 20 Victory Points), so play out the match until a winner is crowned and you will unlock two achievements:

The Powers of the Internet in Big Crown: Showdown
Complete an Online Multiplayer match
  • Unlocked by 6,198 tracked gamers (64% - TA Ratio = 1.25) 9,697

Internet Friends in Big Crown: Showdown
Play with 4 people online
  • Unlocked by 4,045 tracked gamers (42% - TA Ratio = 1.54) 9,697

If you are struggling to find people (as interest in this game will likely drop off quickly), then set up a boosting session on the site.

You may well have wrapped up all of the achievements up to now in less than an hour. The grind starts here though, with the remaining achievements taking several more hours of playtime.

The Grind

We will begin the grind by focusing on the 'Repo-man' achievement, for knocking 1000 objects off the stage. At the same time, we shall gain progress toward the 'Fashionista' achievement (for buying all of the required hats) and 'MARATHRONE!' (for moving 26.2 miles in cumulative distance). Reconnect your preferred second controller and set up a local custom match. I would like to give credit to TA user x SpiinDropZz i for highlighting this short stage, while I've altered the settings slightly.

  • Map - Keep on Rolling (1st Row, 2nd to Last)
  • Lives - 5 (it'll be timed just right to end the stage after you've punched everything off that is feasible)
  • Victory Points - 50 (to make the game last as long as possible)
  • Combat Power - High (seems to add a bit more oomph to punches)
  • Map Speed - Slow (to allow more time to knock objects off the stage, while collecting coins from chests)
  • Regicide Bonus - 1 (not relevant)

Set out to punch objects off the stage, either from the edge or into the gaps. Examples of objects that you can punch include pots, crates, gears and the wheelbarrow toward the end. While doing this ensure to collect coins from the three treasure chests to save up money for the necessary hats (you should have enough time to do so). A completed round will take just over two minutes and give you about 4% progress each time (if you were relatively thorough). I'd recommend to switch the achievement tracker on while doing the grinding to see how progress is going. Once you achieve enough points to end the game, you can simply start again by pressing cn_A at the podium screen. To knock 1000 objects off the stage shouldn't take you longer than 90 minutes. Once you have knocked the necessary amount of objectives off the stage, you will unlock:

Repo-man in Big Crown: Showdown
Repo-man340 (100)
Knock 1000 objects off the track
  • Unlocked by 842 tracked gamers (9% - TA Ratio = 3.39) 9,697

Now quit out of the game (coins are saved as soon as you pick them up thankfully). Our attention will now switch to the 'Fashionista' achievement. For this achievement, you need to buy every hat in the 'Swag' section, apart from the bottom tier of hats with a star in the top right corner (for some reason these don't count). The combined cost to purchase all of the required hats is 730 coins, which isn't too bad. You should have gained roughly 200 coins just from grinding for the 'Repo-man' achievement, and added to your previous amount, you may well have 300 already.

We will set now set up another custom game on the same map, tweaking a few settings.

  • Map - Keep on Rolling (1st Row, 2nd to Last)
  • Lives - 3 (it'll be timed just right to give you a few seconds to collect the coins from the final chest)
  • Victory Points - 50 (to make the game last as long as possible)
  • Combat Power - High (seems to add a bit more oomph to punches)
  • Map Speed - High (will speed the coin grind up significantly)
  • Regicide Bonus - 1 (not relevant)

Race out of the blocks and focus only on the chests, collecting the coins from them as soon as possible. You'll soon get into a rhythm where you can get through the stage with ease. On average you should expect to get 11 coins in a run (a coin usually likes to fall off at the first chest), which will last around 50 seconds. The coins will start piling up quickly and it shouldn't take you much longer than an hour to get to 730. As soon as you believe you have that amount, quit out.

Head to the 'Swag' section and begin purchasing the hats (ensuring not to buy any on the bottom row that has a star in the top right corner). Once you have purchased all of the necessary hats, you will unlock:

Stylish in Big Crown: Showdown
Stylish29 (20)
Purchase your first hat
  • Unlocked by 4,501 tracked gamers (46% - TA Ratio = 1.46) 9,697

Fashionista in Big Crown: Showdown
Fashionista765 (200)
Purchase all of the hats
  • Unlocked by 663 tracked gamers (7% - TA Ratio = 3.82) 9,697

We are now left with the ultimate grind of the game, traveling 26.2 miles in cumulative distance. At this stage, I only had 28% progress, so expect this grind to take around four hours if you are starting at a similar point as I did.

Set up another custom match with the settings below. I would like to give credit to TA user BreakingBear101 for this set-up, which is likely to be the most efficient as I believe it is the longest stage.

  • Map - Rooftop Run (2nd Row, 1st Option)
  • Lives - 7 (to ensure the stage doesn't end prematurely)
  • Victory Points - 50 (to make the game last as long as possible)
  • Combat Power - Standard (not relevant)
  • Map Speed - High (could be switched to slow but it's best to have a sense of urgency and get into a rhythm)
  • Regicide Bonus - 1 (not relevant)

Once you load into the stage, make sure to always be on the move (even during the 5-second countdown) to gain additional distance. Quickly work your way through the map (potentially zig-zagging or going in circles for further distance when you have a moment) until you reach the end where the door begins to open. The second controller should have two lives remaining (sometimes it will be one), make sure you quickly kill yourself enough times to match that total so more rounds can take place. Press cn_A to bring your character down immediately once they are floating above the stage. Over 25 rounds you should gain around 16-17% in progress. Unfortunately, there's no way around the fact that this will be a boring grind. Once you have traveled a cumulative total of 26.2 miles, you will unlock the final achievement in the game.

MARATHRONE! in Big Crown: Showdown
MARATHRONE!822 (200)
Run a Marathon (26.2 miles)
  • Unlocked by 577 tracked gamers (6% - TA Ratio = 4.11) 9,697

Congratulations on your completion!
