NOTE: There are encounters with Virgil that are not listed in the guide, but make sure to talk to him every time you see him, and until he disappears. It's the only way to ensure you'll get the achievement relating to him. He is never in a hard to find place.
Prologue – Acre.
While fighting the armed guards at the beginning of the game, you should be able to get the following if you can keep up a combo and not miss any blows. It should come easily enough but if miss it, there will be a chance later in the game to get it.
Afterwards you'll get another achievement
Continue along with the level and you'll come to your first boss fight.
Boss Fight – Death.
The best way to deal with Death is to avoid his attacks, so it's advisable to keep your finger on all the time. Death will only use two attacks on you.
- The first attack is a close attack where Death will slash at you a couple of times with the scythe.
- The second attack is more of a ranged attack, where Death will swing his scythe in a circle a few times, which sends shockwaves outwards. In order to avoid this attack, you will have to jump or block.
Note that you are not able just to run away from Death. He is able to disappear and reappear in a cloud of smoke closer to you.
Once Death is around 50% health, he’ll unleash his third attack; it's another close attack where Death will turn his scythe into a spear and stab at you. Any method will avoid this attack.
When Death is at about 25% health, Dante will take the scythe from Death. Now that you have the scythe, Death will no longer attack and just run and try to hide from you. When appears above his head, follow the QTE button prompts and destroy Death.
You now have Dante’s first weapon for the duration of the game – the Death Scythe. Now you'll arrive in the next section, Florence.
Prologue – Florence.
Continue with the level, killing all the enemies. You'll gain a few abilities during the fight: Death's Grasp UN1 and Diabolic Ascension UN2. Refer to the Holy and Unholy Skill Tree page for more information.
It’s best to note here, that if you are using the tip to focus on one path per playthrough, now is the time to start focusing on it. Ideally you'd want to do the Holy path first, but it's entirely up to you to decide. I won't be talking about what abilities to buy from here on out, the game isn't going to punish you for leveling up a path however you want to. It will take you two playthroughs to complete both paths anyway, so play as you wish.
You'll eventually collect 1000 souls and be prompted to purchase an ability with the souls. You'll be able to buy one of two abilities: Impaler UN5 or Vile Wind UN7 (you'll need Vile Flurry for this one, but it doesn't cost any souls).
When you get to leave the graveyard and head into a church, there's a Health Fountain to break. Follow the on-screen prompts to do so. There are varying fountains throughout the game: purple ones for Mana, orange ones for Judas Coins, and white ones for souls. You need to break 20 Health and Mana fountains to get their respective achievements. So it's worth breaking all the fountains you come across.
To the right of the door is a Statue of Beatrice. These are used to save your progress throughout the game. So save whenever you get to one.
Inside the church you'll meet a new flying enemy called Pests. You can't punish or absolve them, so just kill them quickly using Holy Cross attacks by pressing . Continue with the level, and eventually you'll come across Virgil for the first time. Talk to him and you'll receive the Holy Spell - Righteous Path.
You'll meet a big beast (known as an Asterian Beast) after you've killed some minions. You can't kill this beast, but hit him enough for the button to appear and start a Quick Time Event to take control of him. You'll have enough time to hit all of the buttons, which are: , then , then .
Now that you have control of the beast, you can use it to kill the Minions that appear. Kill them all, then go to the door that was behind Virgil and open it. You'll receive a story line achievement, and you should have another for killing 30 minions.
Continue with the level and you'll eventually come across Virgil again. Talk to him to receive the following relic and achievement:
Death Blade 1/31.
- Requirement: Unholy Level 1.
- Description: Increases the damage of all Scythe attacks and abilities. Level 1: 10%, Level 2: 15%, Level 3: 20%.
After Virgil disappears, double jump (, ) to the left of where Virgil was for an Orange Fountain. Break it for a Judas Coin 1/30.
Shores of Acheron.
Continue along, getting over the bridge and climbing down a ladder. You'll eventually meet a Guardian Demon. The Guardian Demon does have an attack that cannot be blocked, so when you see its sword glow orange, either dodge or jump away from the Demon. If you try to block, the attack will still hit and damage Dante. Once you've attacked the Guardian Demon enough times, will appear above him, allowing you to either absolve or punish the Demon.
After killing everything, a crank will appear on the elevator. Turn it to get the elevator to travel to the very top and you'll see a fountain to break for Judas Coin 2/30. Go through the door to talk to Virgil. Continue along the path and fight off all the enemies that appear, absolving or punishing them as you wish. Once they’re dead, head towards the door and you’ll come across Shade 1/27 – Pontius Pilate.
Afterwards, kill all the enemies that ambush you, go through a door to see a Beatrice Statue and a rope. Behind the statue that’s holding the rope is a fountain with Judas Coin 3/30.
Cross the gap and then climb up the Wall of the Damned you end up on. Head to the right on the Wall, and you’ll find a Demon Dog in an alcove. Absolve it for the following relic:
Charon's Oar 2/31.
- Requirement: Holy Level 3.
- Description: Absolving enemies and the Damned grants additional Holy experience. Level 1: 10%, Level 2: 20%, Level 3: 30%.
In the next room, move the crate across the area and up the ram. Go to the crank and turn up until you move the crate over the platform and towards the left end of the wall. Jump up the ledge and open the fountain for Judas Coin 4/30.
Jump down and put the crate back on the right side. Then move the crate in front of the ledge when the Shade is. Use the crank to move the platform to its original position. Jump up and absolve or punish the Shade 2/27 – Orpheus. Then climb up the wall.
Continue with the level, taking control of the Asterian Beast when it appears. Follow the interaction prompts on the back of Charon's neck when all the minions are dead, in order to tear off his head. Climb the pillars with the beast as quickly as possible, as they'll start to break, you'll have a Quick Time Event to follow in order to survive the pillars. Keep running after Dante's landed as the ground will begin to crumble. Eventually the ground will give way and Dante will fall. Follow the onscreen prompts to end up in Limbo.
By now, you should have enough souls spare to purchase the Repayment skill from the Unholy tree, in order for you to get the counter-attack ability. When you have the ability, you can take your time working towards
Continue along and talk to Virgil. Proceed to the top of the Wall of Damned and you'll meet a new enemy, the Exploding Minion. You can't punish or absolve them, so grab it and throw it towards the glowing door to proceed. Continue along and just before Charon’s head is an opening in the wall. Go through it and you’ll have to fight a Guardian Demon. Once it’s dealt with, break the fountain to receive Judas Coin 5/30.
Go to Charon’s head and interact with him by pressing This will push his head over the ledge and you’ll get
Continue past the gap left from Charon’s head and you’ll come across a Demon Dog and a fountain. Absolve the Demon Dog for the following relic:
Eyes of St. Lucia 3/31
- Requirement: None.
- Description: Dante has a chance to deflect an incoming attack negating the damage and pushing the enemy away. Level 1: 10%, Level 2: 20%, Level 3: 30%.
And in the fountain is Beatrice Stone 1/3 You’ll receive an achievement for this stone.
Go back to where Charon’s head was, go right and open the door. When you first enter the room, you’ll be introduced to another new enemy, the Unbaptised Baby. You’ll have to fight off about 10-20 of them. You can absolve or punish the babies as you wish. Once they’re dead, you'll be able to progress and should have gotten the following:
Follow the path and you'll see Virgil. Talk to him twice for the following relic:
Lord's Blessing 4/31.
- Requirement: Holy Level 1.
- Description: Increases the damage of all Cross attacks and abilities. Level 1: 10%, Level 2: 15%, Level 3: 20%
Open the door and you’ll find a Mana and a Soul Fountain. There is a spike wheel that will roll up and down the ramp. Get to the top of the ramp and open the Demon Door before the spike wheel reaches the top and go through the door. Continue along the path and absolve or punish the Shade 3/27 – Electra.
When you’re in the room with all the statues and after the cut scene, continue along past the giant statue, and go left. Double jump off the ledge, to left and pull the lever in the alcove. The giant statue in the centre of the ramp will lower, revealing a Demon Dog. Absolve the dog for the following relic:
Saladin's Mercy 5/31.
- Requirement: Holy Level 4.
- Description: A successful absolution grants the player more health. Level 1: 5%, Level 2: 10%, Level 3: 15%.
Save at the Statue of Beatrice, and the proceed to face King Minos.
Boss Fight - King Minos
You’ll start off with a cut scene of King Minos and Dante, and then the fight will begin. Minos has a few attacks that he likes to use, but they are easy enough to avoid taking damage from. The first attack he uses is where his tentacles will rise up from the ground and start trying to stab Dante. All you need to do is run around in circles to avoid them, though they do start trying to stab Dante quicker. Next he’ll lean back, and grapple points will appear on both the left and right hand side of the arena (these will be under some tentacles). Grapple onto one of them while he “roars”. Once his “roaring” is over, he’ll lower his head; now is the time to attack him. Minos tries to smell where Dante is and will attack with this tongue. If he hits you, you and your Scythe will be separated and a tentacle will appear to try and stab you. When this happens, a QTE will start and you just need to follow the prompt to avoid the attack. You’ll need to do enough damage to Minos in order to get him to lean back and cover his eyes so you can attack his stomach.
If you happen to miss the time to attack his stomach, just repeat the above until you do. Once you've attacked his stomach, some Hell Minions will be summoned to attack you. Minos will then start with the tentacle stabbing again, until they get to a certain speed when he will decide to slam the ground with his fist and sweep across the arena. You can either jump over his arm when he’s sweeping across the arena to avoid any damage or you can stand right underneath the tentacles where the grapple points appear, as he never slams his arm down near the tentacles and the sweep stops before the tentacles. He’ll lean back again, so grapple onto one of the grapple points that are revealed again to avoid Minos’ “roaring”. After he’s finished “roaring”, he’ll leave his hand on the arena ground, and a icon will appear above it. Run over to his hand, hit and follow the prompts from the QTE ( then ) when they appear. Once you've done that, you can attack his stomach again.
Once you've attacked his stomach again, Unbaptised Babies and a Guardian Demon will be summoned. Kill them, and Minos will start slamming his fist on the ground again. Repeat the process you did for avoiding being hit by this until he leans back, again, and grab onto a grapple point that appears. After he’s “roared”, begin attacking his face. He’ll attack with tongue twice. If you are able to hit him enough, he’ll stop attacking and his tongue will fall out. An icon will appear, pressing it will start a QTE. Move the left analogue stick down when prompted to. This’ll pull Minos forward towards the spiked wheel you saw in the cut scene at the beginning. After stabbing his tongue on the wheel, press and mash to kill him. Once he’s dead you’ll receive the following relic and achievement:
Tail of Minos 6/31.
- Requirements: Unholy Level 3
- Description: Punishing enemies and the Damned grants an additional Unholy boost Level 1: 10%, Level 2: 20%, Level 3: 30%.
When you're descending into Lust and have jumped onto the second rope, climb all the way up to the top and onto a ledge to find Judas Coin 6/30. Climb down the rope again and stop halfway. On your right, there should be two bone ladders. Start swinging over to them and jump to grab onto one. Climb up the ladder, absolve the Demon Dog for the following relic:
Francesca's Book 7/31.
- Requirements: Unholy Level 3
- Description: Every 50 kills from the scythe, Dante will gain additional Unholy experience. Level 1: 100 exp, Level 2: 150 exp, Level 3: 250 exp.
As soon as you’ve landed from dropping from the bone ladder, you’ll see a Shade. Once the cut scene is over, go and absolve the Shade 4/27 – Francesca da Polenta. You must absolve her for part of achievement.
Continue onto the bridge, using the statues as a hiding place when the lightning balls stop in front of them. Go to the third, left-hand statue and drop down onto the wall. Climb along to see the Demon Dog at the end. Absolve for the following relic:
Filippo's Rage 8/31.
- Requirements: Unholy Level 5
- Description: Dante can block previously unblockable Demon attacks. Higher levels unlock auto-countering the attacks and increases the damage returned. Level 1: Dante can block previously unblockable Demon attacks, Level 2: Auto-counter unblockable Demon attacks, Level 3: Increases damage returned. This is a recommended relic to equip, purely for helping with your counter attacks.
Climb back up and make your way down to the fourth set of statues. Once you pass the third set of statues, the lightning balls will not bother you. Go the statue on the left and behind it will be a climbable wall. Climb to the end to find the fountain for Judas Coin 7/30.
At the end of the bridge you’ll see Virgil. Talk to him until he disappears. As you make your way back towards the beginning on the bridge, between the third and fourth statues, you’ll see a break in the wall. Drop down to see a fountain. Break it to receive Beatrice Stone 2/3.
Go back up to the second, left hand side statue. In front of this statue will be a lever. Activating the lever will switch the direction of the lightning ball when it hits the plate next to the statue. When the ball is between the second and third statue, pull the lever to switch the direction. If timed correctly, the ball will reverse its direction of travel and will be shot towards the vortex surrounding the tower. Once the lightning ball has hit the tower, you have a short amount of time to jump through the hole before it closes. I found the best way to get through the hole was to start running towards the tower after the lightning ball had changed direction.
Once you’re inside the tower, you’ll come across a new enemy to face, the Temptress of Lust. They will fight from both close quarters and at a distance. They cannot be absolved or punished. The best way to defeat them is to use the Holy Cross to defeat them as they’re known to dodge Scythe attacks.
In the tower, after raising the snake’s head, destroying the fangs and jumping up, talk to Virgil to receive the following relic:
Tristan's Desire 9/31.
- Requirements: None
- Description: Increases the damage of all Magic attacks Level 1: 10%; Level 2: 15%, Level 3: 20%.
Jump up to reach a soul fountain on right and a Mana fountain on the left. Go back to the middle and down the path on the left to find a Beatrice Statue and a lever. Go down the path for a Health fountain.
You’ll come to a bit where you'll see Beatrice on the platform, and then the platform will go up. Run across the platform and pull out the statue. Go down the walkway to the left and pull the lever. Double jump back onto the platform and jump to the ledge on the left. Open the fountain for Judas Coin 8/30.
Go to the alcove on the right to destroy a soul fountain, and then pull the lever here. The roof above the platform will open, and will rise up once you’ve jumped onto it. You are now on an elevator.
Cleopatra will be climbing up the outside of the tower, following you. While heading up on this platform, you’ll have to fight two Temptresses, and near the end of the fight, a Guardian Demon. Cleopatra will break through the tower and flip the platform. You’ll be prompted to jump to a grapple point by pressing while she continues climbing. The platform will continue to go up the tower. You’ll then have to fight some Minions and more Temptresses.
Once the platform stops, you’ll have a mini-fight with Cleopatra. She does this really creepy thing with her boobs where Unbaptised Babies will be born from them. She’ll place the Babies in the arena, and the game will zoom in on her hand. After you’ve killed the first wave of Unbaptised Babies, a platform will appear where the Health fountain is with 3 Hell Minions. Continue to kill the enemies until a platform appears in front of the Mana fountain.
You’ll need to attack Cleopatra’s hand until she pulls it away. Go over to the side where the Mana fountain is and pull the lever above it. This’ll turn the snake heads towards Cleopatra. Kill any enemies and attack her hand again, until she pulls it away. Now go over and pull the lever above the Health fountain. The snake statues will breathe fire, damaging Cleopatra. After that, she’ll decide she’s had enough and will climb the tower. You’ll regain any health and the platform will rise as well.
After getting to the top of the Lust Tower, kill the enemies, go to the right and climb down to find the Shade 5/27 – Paolo Malatesta. You must absolve him, and as long as you have absolved Francesca da Polenta too, you'll receive
Find and absolve both Francesca da Polenta and Paolo Malatesta
As you make your way across the Wall of Damned that shoots lightning, you’ll reach a ledge with a Beatrice Statue. The Shade 6/27 – Semeramis is to the right of the Beatrice Statue. From the Beatrice Statue, drop down the ledge in front of the Shade to land on a ledge with a Demon Dog. Absolve the dog for the following relic:
Arrow of Paris 10/31.
- Requirements: Unholy Level 1.
- Description: Grab attack damage is increased Level 1: 25%, Level 2: 50%, Level 3: 100%
Climb back up after getting the Arrow of Paris Relic, go to the Beatrice Statue and double jump to the left to find a fountain containing Judas Coin 9/30.
Save at the Beatrice Statue, and at the top of the second wall, you'll start your next boss fight.
Boss Fight - Marc Antony and Cleopatra
This fight is more Marc Antony than Cleopatra. When you first get to the top, you’ll see Beatrice as you saw her earlier. A cut scene will happen, and Cleopatra will appear, and Marc Antony will come out of her mouth to fight you.
Even though Marc Antony has plenty of attacks, I find he is easier to beat when you keep your distance from him and mash B to hit him with the Holy Cross attacks. He has a few attacks at his disposal and most are close ranged. He will try and stomp you and slash a few times if you’re close to him, with the bad side being they’ll get more powerful each time. He can also slam his shield in front of you. His only ranged attack (if you give him a chance to do it) is where he slams his shield into the ground and the bottom will glow. If you move the shield will follow you until purple spikes pop out the ground, but these will only go in a straight line in front of you. He will then lunge with his sword. Cleopatra does like to interfere, though I never had this happen to me. She likes to slam her fist somewhere in the arena and if you’re close to it, Dante may end up stunned. She can also conjure up a dark tornado what will roam towards you. She also heals Marc Antony, and when she does, a green aura appears around Marc. When the healing his happening, attack Cleopatra’s hand until she stops and falls down the tower. Unfortunately she’ll eventually climb back up.
There’s no pattern to Marc Antony’s attacks, so just be prepared. Like I said, I found it easier to mash Holy Cross attacks at him so he can’t really attack you. When he’s got around 25% health remaining, he’ll constantly slam his shield into the ground and have spikes come out the ground. He’ll either use a charged sword attack or jump and lunge at you and stab the ground. When he uses his shield, your attacks are greatly reduced in power.
Keep mashing your Holy Cross attacks and eventually you’ll defeat Marc Antony and receive the following relic:
Antony's Standard 11/31.
- Requirements: None
- Description: Increases the rate at which Dante stores Redemption energy Level 1: 10%, Level 2: 20%, Level 3: 30%.
Cleopatra will appear at his side, devastated that you’ve just defeated him. You’ll receive:
You’ll have a quick cut scene of Cleopatra all distraught and decides she’s going to go after Dante. She’ll start crawling towards Dante, who will drop his Scythe and start trying to back away. Cleopatra will then jump at Dante’s and you’ll have to knock her off by moving the left analogue down and up when prompted. She’ll then jump and tackle you. Continue to follow the prompts for moving the left analogue stick in a counter-clockwise direction from right to left to roll over. When you’ve done that, you have to move the left analogue stick up to stab Cleopatra with the Scythe. She’ll then disappear and you’ll receive the Lust Storm magic.
Continue with the rest of the level, which will involve the platform falling and you having to kill some enemies. The platform will begin to be destroyed by platforms falling onto the platform. You'll eventually be prompted to press to rappel across some statues. Make sure to double jump between the third and fourth rappel points to avoid being hit by the wall of electricity. When you land, talk to Virgil.
Start the descent into Gluttony. When you see Cerberus, go right on the final horizontal rope. You'll see a Demon Dog inside and alcove, which is blocked by a fire hole. There's enough time to run inside, absolve the dog and get back back out during the fire shots.
Rain of Gluttony 12/31.
- Requirements: Holy Level 3
- Description: Absolutions stun surrounding enemies Level 1: 5 seconds, Level 2: 10 seconds, Level 3: 15 seconds.
Once you’ve landed from the rope, talk to Virgil until he’s disappeared. Drop down the bone ladder when you’re ready to commence the fight with Cerberus.
Boss Fight – Cerberus
As soon as you land, a cut scene will start where Cerberus’ three heads will appear and snap at each other. Now the fight will begin. I found Cerberus to be one of the more annoying bosses to fight, because of how you have to deal with it.
Each head will throw up vomit balls at you, but not all at the same time. The most vomit balls you’ll get at the same time will be two. First, pick either the left or right side head to take out. You can do this in one of two ways:
- The first way is to get as close as possible on one of the fountain-like holes, press and rapidly mash the button, just like you would a fountain. When you’re doing this, the head on that side will lunge at you.
- The second way is to lure one of the side heads to lunge at you and then attack it until appears above its head. My preference was to use the first approach as it’s a lot easier to do. For that reason, I’ll focus on explaining on how to utilise the first method correctly.
Once you’ve chosen your side to deal with, open the hole that’s furthest away from the head. Once it’s opened, dodge out the way when the head lunges and attack it from behind, so you can’t have other vomit balls hit you. When the icon appears, tap it, and then hit . This’ll cause Dante to slice its head off, and you’ll regain some health. Repeat this for the other side.
Now you only have to deal with the remaining head, the centre one. It’ll strike whenever Dante gets too close and will vomit faster than previously. Open one of the fountains further away from the body and wait for the head to lunge. When it passes through the fire, move to the far side of the arena, away from the head. It’ll start writhing in pain for a couple of seconds, and then sweep along the arena, violently swinging. Repeat the fountain-opening technique on the other side of the arena. As soon as you hit , the head will attempt to eat you. A QTE will kick in and you’ll have to move the left analogue stick up, then down, then right and then left. The head will explode and you’ve defeated the boss. You’ll receive the following relic:
Azrael's Apprentice 13/31.
- Requirements: Unholy Level 1
- Description: Any successful block on an enemy has a chance to stun them Level 1: 10%, Level 2: 15%, Level 3: 25% chance.
And the following achievement:
After defeating Cerberus, you will see a fountain ahead on the path. When you get close enough, a Gorger Worm will appear. Defeat the Worm and open the fountain for Judas Coin 10/30. As you have opened 10, you'll obtain the following achievement:
Continue along, opening the Health and Mana fountains, then descend the bone ladder. A Gorger Worm will instantly attack you. Kill off the enemies that appear and the wall of flames will die. Continue through and you will see the Shade 7/27 – Ciacco . Absolve or punish as you wish.
Once you reach this area, the mouths will close and a bunch of Pests will appear. Kill all of them using Holy Cross and the mouths will open again. In the mouth ahead of you, on the left, is Shade 8/27- Clodia.
Jump back to the platform with the rope crossing the river, and cross said river. Right before you pass through the arch to enter the Mirror Maze, you will see Virgil. Talk to him twice to receive the relic:
Ciacco's Bile 14/31.
- Requirements: Holy Level 5
- Description: Grants Dante persistent Mana regeneration. Levelling up this relic will increase the speed of Mana regeneration.
This relic is one of the more useful relics in the game. If you use Magic regularly, especially Divine Armour, you will want to have this relic equipped. As you level up this relic, your Mana will refill quicker than it normally would.
Follow the path, and you will see an arch with a glowing door. Head towards it and a Gorger Worm, Minions and Guardian Demons will appear to attack you. Kill all of them, open the fountain and then head through the arch.
Once you pass through the arch, you will see a new enemy, Gluttons, eating other souls. After the flashback, Lucifer will appear and another flashback cut scene will occur. After the cut scene is over, you will need to fight a Glutton. Due to their large size, your magic attacks won't have much effect on them. The best thing to do is just to spam until appears above them, in order to absolve or punish them. The floor will be destroyed and you will have to navigate through the Mirror Maze.
The Mirror Maze is an annoyance. Activating levers will change which portal you come out of when you enter one. Pass through the portal at the end of the path you are on and activate the lever after coming out of the portal. This will make the portal you just walked through turn.
Go back the way you came and walk to the far end of the platform and climb the wall. At the end of the first ledge you reach will be a soul fountain, which you can break. Climbing higher to the second ledge, break the fountain for Judas Coin 11/30.
Climb back down and pull the lever. Go back through the portal and jump from the platform that appears to a ledge with a lever and another soul fountain. If you pass through the portal next to the fountain, you will fall out of the portal that is above where you started. So you must wait until the revolving platform (it looks like a table) comes in from the left and hovers underneath and pass through the portal. When the platform moves through the centre of the area, double jump to the right towards the fountain you can see. Breaking this fountain will reward you with Beatrice Stone 3/3, and the following achievement will pop if you have gotten all three so far
If you’re still missing one or two, there are a couple of more chances to get the achievement.
Passing through the nearby portal will also cause you to drop out of the one above where you start this maze. Once you pass through the portal the platform takes you through, you will be out of the maze. This is the only time you will visit this place during the game.
Continue along and you'll come to a Soul fountain and a Beatrice Statue. Begin your descent. When the hole underneath the ladder isn’t breathing fire, drop to the vine and then swing to the bone ladder on the left. Climb the ladder, and you’ll come to an alcove with a fountain and a Demon Dog. Break the fountain for Judas Coin 12/30. The Demon Dog needs to be absolved for:
Octavian's Gold 15/31.
- Requirements: Holy Level 3
- Description: Grants the ability to perform an automatic special recovery attack when Dante is knocked down Level 1: Relic is in use.
After landing in Greed, follow the path until you see another room ahead of you. Before going through the doorway, go up to the ledge near to it, drop down and shimmy over to the right. Pull yourself up when you can and you’ll come across a Demon Dog. He can be hard to spot, so listen for the growling sound they make. Absolve it to receive:
Crown of Carthage 16/31
- Requirements: Holy Level 5
- Description: Dante is protected from ranged enemy attack damage Level 1: 10% protection, Level 2: 15%, Level 3: 20%
Climb back up the ledge, and in an alcove on the left are Health and Mana Fountains. As you make your way towards the opening, jump up on the right side into another alcove with a Soul fountain. Double jump across and take the path to the left and there will be another fountain. Break it for Judas Coin 13/30.
Jump back to the ledge you jumped from to reach the coin. This one may take a few tries to get to. You will want to run off the ledge and double jump beneath the rock arch and grab onto the ledge behind the arch. The fountain on this ledge will contain a Beatrice Stone (4) if you still need a Stone, otherwise you'll receive some Health, Mana, and souls.
As you progress through Greed, you will come to an area with cogs. Make your way to the top of the row on the right and jump over the row on the left. Once you are on top of the row on the right, jump up to the single cog in the middle. If you don't make the jump, you will land on the third cog in the row on the right. Once you get onto the lone cog, jump over towards her and grab the ledge. Pull yourself up and absolve or punish Shade 9/27 - Tarpeia. If you have three Beatrice Stones, you can auto-absolve her by pressing if you wish.
After you’ve crossed the cogs, open the Demon Door. In this room you’ll come across a new enemy, the Hoarder-Waster. You can’t absolve or punish them. You need to kill off all enemies that appear until a lever appears in the centre of the room. Pull that lever and jump into the alcove with another lever right in front of you. Judas Coin 14/30 is in the fountain next to the second lever.
Pull the lever to lower the platforms, then jump in the alcove and quickly jump onto the platform on the right. As you’re going up for the door that has the spikes on it, you’ll see another alcove with a Demon Dog. To get to the Demon Dog, jump from the middle platform to the right one. Absolve the dog for:
Demon's Wing 17/31
- Location: Greed
- Requirements: Unholy Level 5
- Description: Dante's aerial attack damage is increased Level 1: 10% increase, Level 2: 15%, Level 3: 20%.
Continue with the level and you will get to a circular room with the caged demon dog in the middle, drop down to find two fountains in the area. The one near the molten gold contains Judas Coin 15/30, while the other has a few souls.
After you've defeated the Hoarder-Wasters, climb up the wall that was blocked and make your way across the area to the Demon Door. Open the door and pull the lever. Go back into the room and double jump to the right to be able to absolve or punish Shade 10/27 - Gessius Florus.
Jump back to where the Demon Door is and jump into the centre area to absolve the Demon Dog for a relic:
Wasted Gold 18/31
- Requirements: None
- Description: Every successful attack increase the Redemption refill rate Level 1: 10% increase, Level 2: 20%, Level 3: 30%.
In the next room, there are Health and Mana fountains along with a Beatrice Statue. Head round the corner and you’ll see the Beast Tamer. He’ll jump and an archway and some bars will appear to block it off. In this area, you need to turn the crank enough to open those bars to pass through. The catch is you need to do this before the walls come together and crush Dante, along with having two saws moving back and forth across the room and having pairs of Guardian Demons trying to kill you. As soon as you start turning the crank, the saws will begin to move. Ignore anything else you see and focus on getting through that archway. Turn the crank until you can get Dante through the gap, holding off the Guardian Demons as best as you can. Once you’re through, the walls slam shut.
You'll now instantly enter a fight with some Guardian Demons, an Asterian Beast and its Beast Tamer, and finally some Exploding Minions. The Guardian Demons and Minions will keep respawning until you take control of the Beast. Get control of the Beast and before you leave the room, destroy all the fountains and remaining enemies.
Head to the far end of the area, where those walls slammed shut, and an interactive marker will appear. Use it to allow the Beast to open the walls and Dante will jump off in order for you to open the Demon Door. The saw blades will activate again and some Exploding Minions will spawn, so just be careful.
Once you’re through the door, the walls will close again. You’ll see Virgil, so talk to him. Climb up the wall and head to the right, into the two cells. The cell furthest away from where you started will have a Demon Dog for you to absolve for:
Coin of Plutus 19/31
- Location: Greed
- Requirements: None
- Description: Increases the combo window that allows Dante to acquire style points and increment the Hit Counter Level 1: 1 sec, Level 2: 2 secs, Level 3: 3 secs. This is a useful relic to level up when going for the big-combo achievements.
The cell to the left has a fountain for you to break for Judas Coin 16/30.
Continue with the level until you meet your first Throne Demon. The easiest way I found to kill them is to keep spamming Holy attacks until I could absolve or punish them. After you have killed the Demon, the gate will drop as well. Go past where the gate was and follow the path around and the fountain you come to will have Judas Coin 17/30 inside.
You will come to an area where you will need to ride a few platforms across a giant chasm, fighting off enemies on each platform. When you get to the last platform, you'll come to an area with another platform that has a fire mouth and lever on top. Kill the enemies that appear, then pull the lever to have the mouth shoot a fireball. This will reveal a crank you can turn which will cause the fire mouth to turn to the right. Pull the lever and it'll reveal an alcove with some fountains inside. The left fountain contains Judas Coin 18/30.
Go up the left platform this time and there will be a Beatrice Statue and a Demon Door. Follow the path and break the soul fountains. Go to the platform, pull the lever and the platform will begin to descend. Once it’s at the bottom, continue along the path and talk to Virgil. You’ll come to a statue of Plutus, and you'll have to fight some enemies. Once they’ve been dealt with, a ray of light will appear from the Statue of Plutus and a platform will appear.
You’ll have to rotate the crank until you’ve created a path to jump up to the platform that the statue is holding in his left hand. The second the platform that’s been formed in the light has been moved away from the light, it’ll start decaying.
The way you’ll want to tackle this is by rotating the starting platform all the way to the left and then all the way to the right. After you’ve gotten the final platform formed (this should be a tall one, with a hand sticking out the back), turn the platforms back to the left until this tall platform is lined up with the one that the statue is holding. You’ll be able to jump up to the statue. Once you’re up on the ledge behind Plutus, there’s a Beatrice statue, a soul fountain and a Demon Door. Open the door to proceed.
Once you’re in the next room, break the soul fountain then jump onto the next rope. When you get across to the other side, talk to Virgil again and there’s another soul fountain to break.
Proceed onwards and make your way past the stomping logs to the Demon Door. Open the door and cross the Wall of the Damned. When you reach the other side, there's a Beatrice Statue on the right and Health and Mana fountains on the left, along with Shade 11/27 - Fulvia. Absolve or punish as you wish and then proceed through the Demon door at the end of the room.
You'll then make your way down an elevator to an area where you will have to take and keep control of an Asterian Beast. Once you've taken all the enemies out, beware though as there will be Beast Tamers who will try to take the Beast back from you when you've got control, you'll have to make your way across the room where the Statue of Plutus is. You'll have to push the block from the left to the button on the ride side of the room. Once you’ve pulled the block far enough, go to the left side of it and hold to push it across the room. If you try and pull it all the way, the block will decay too quickly and you won’t be able to get past the statue.
After you’ve pushed the block across the room and it’s on the button, climb the wall and get pass the statue. Eventually you'll reach the Wheel of Fortune, and you're about to start another boss fight.
Boss Fight - Alighiero
Alighiero has two attacks; one is a ranged attack, and one is a close attack. When he uses his ranged attack, he will swing his cross upwards, and a few smaller crosses will home in on Dante and hit him a couple of times. Blocking these crosses will defend Dante. His close attack is where he slams his cross to the ground. On occasion, he’ll swing the cross at you. The easiest way I found to deal with him was just to mash , as he can’t seem to recover quick enough.
Once you’ve got his health low enough, the outer ring of the Wheel will break away. He’ll also begin using another attack, if you let him. This attack involves him stabbing his cross into the ground and a hologram of it stays there. Every few seconds, this cross will send out a small shockwave, but it doesn’t reach very far. After this happens about five times, it’ll disappear. Alighiero will put a few of these crosses down at the same time.
Once his health is even lower, more of the area will break away and he’ll begin using his magic attack. He’ll yell “sins of the Father” and then a burst of energy will erupt from around him. If you’re close enough, then you’ll receive major damage. Also, when he’s throwing his crosses by now, they will be three at a time and the crosses that are stabbed in the ground will send a shockwave across, pretty much, the entire arena.
If you’re quick enough with mashing , you’re Holy Cross attacks will be damaging him at a rate where he can’t recover and not be able to deal many attacks, if any at all. Once you’ve killed him, you’ll receive:
Eye of Alighiero 20/31
- Requirements: Holy Level 3
- Description: Dante is able to absorb a certain amount of damage when attacked. Leveling up this relic increase the damage Dante can absorb.
and the Unholy spell, Sins of the Father. You’ll also receive the following achievement:
And by now you should have the following achievement (if not they’ll pop very soon):
The molten gold will drain from around what is remaining of the Wheel and you can proceed towards the Beatrice Statue. There is a ledge next to the Health fountain with a Demon Dog in it. Absolve it to receive:
Hoarder's Purse 21/31
- Requirements: Unholy Level 3
- Description: Increases the time window to execute a counterattack Level 1: 30% increase, Level 2: 60%, Level 3: 90%. Equip this if you still need to do counterattacks for the achievement. This will greatly improve your chances of a successful counterattack.
Continue onwards with your descent into the next circle of hell.
Not long after entering Anger, you will come to a huge gate with a crate in front of it. Pull the crate outwards a little and place it on the right side of the wall. Jump up onto the ledge for a fountain containing. Judas Coin 19/30. Pull the crate back farther, push it over the edge onto the pillar behind you and then jump on top of the crate. The pillar will then sink.
After the Judas Coin, follow the path until you get to Virgil. Talk to him to receive a relic:
Medusa's Call 22/31
- Requirements: Holy Level 5
- Description: Dante's ranged attack and projectile damage is increased Level 1: 10% increase, Level 2: 15%, Level 3: 20%.
After talking to Virgil and crossing the Wall of the Damned, you'll continue along until you reach a big area and be forced to fight a lot of enemies; including the newly introduced Fire Guardians. You deal with these by hitting them with a Holy attack first, then the Scythe to kill them. Once the fight is over, break the door on the right and jump up to get to Shade 12/27 - Boudica. She can be dealt with as you see fit.
After the fight and getting the Shade - Boudica, cross the rope that you see. If you need a Beatrice Stone (5), go all the way across the rope to a ledge (there's also a Mana fountain here). Otherwise, drop down onto the platform in the middle. It will sink slightly. Then kill the enemies that appear until the platform is high enough for you to continue. The fountain with Judas Coin 20/30 will be in a fountain along this path. You will then receive an achievement for collecting 20 Judas Coins.
Continue down the path and climb the wall when you come to it. Once you’re at the top, you’ll see a Beatrice Statue. Down the path to the left are Health and Mana fountains. Continue down the path and you’ll come to a room with a crank. When you first enter, you’ll get a flashback cut scene. Go into the right corner of the room to find Shade – Hecuba 13/27.
You’ll eventually come to a section and hit a cut scene, where you'll see a platform below you moving towards the tower. Once you’ve regained control of Dante, get onto the platform next to you and continue to the right side. Jump up the platform where there’s a fountain to receive Judas Coin 21/30. Jump to another platform and absolve the Demon Dog for a relic:
Guiding Flame 23/31
- Requirements: Holy Level 5
- Description: Dante is immune to excrement attacks such as the Glutton's ranged attack Level 1: Relic is in use
Go back down and talk to Virgil. Go to the interaction point and slide down the bone ladders. When you land, you’ll be in front of the same platform you saw move towards the tower. This platform is between a Beatrice Statue and the Shade – Filippo Argenti 14/27.
Jump onto the platform, and it’ll start to move. As you are progressing along, you’ll have to deal with some Pests. Just keep dealing with the Pests until a giant hand starts to rise up from the water, and kills the Pests for you. Then you’ll have to do the following QTE sequence – – and you’ll land safely. Now we’ll start the boss fight, kind of.
Boss Fight - Phlegyas
As the fight starts, you’ll start at a gate, then some Minions will swarm. At some point, Phlegyas will slam his fist somewhere in the area you’re in, so even though it’s easy to spot where it’ll land, just be careful. After killing a few waves of enemies, the gate will lower, and then you can proceed onwards. After you pass the gate, you will see Beatrice and Lucifer appear from behind a statue of a kneeling woman. After they disappear, you can open the Health and Souls fountains and continue on the left. Jump and hit RB to scythe swing across to the other side, where you can open a Mana fountain.
Eventually, Phlegyas will stop in front of you and you’ll start fighting enemies again. Once you’ve dealt with them all, Phlegyas will move on and the gate ahead will lower. Pull the lever near the edge and a bridge will come together, allowing you to move on. Run across the bridge before it falls back to its original position and open the Health fountain. Make your way towards the tower and a Guardian Demon will appear, followed by more Demons and Pests. Once you’ve dealt with them all, six more Guardian Demons will appear. After a few seconds, Phlegyas will decide to breathe fire, so double jump to avoid it and it’ll kill the Demons. After a few waves of more enemies, the platform that the first Guardian Demon appeared on will lower, and you’ll have to kill two more Throne Demons. Once you’ve taken care of them, a gate will lower, revealing a lever. Pull it and the platform you are on will rise.
You’ll watch a cut scene with Beatrice and Lucifer. After they’ve disappeared, Dante will jump on Phlegyas and you’ll take control of this huge creature. Walk down the bridge, and you’ll be heading into the City of Dis. Use Phlegyas to break down the door and go towards the running creatures and follow the path. Destroying everything you can will reward you with souls, so go ahead and burn it all down. Once you get to a bridge,it’ll begin to crumble. Stomp on it a few times and it’ll fall out from under you. Dante will then jump to safety.
Climb down the ropes until you’re on the third one. Swing over and destroy the breakable object and the platform above will collapse. Climb back to the top of the left side and turn the crank to retract the spikes. When you try to go back to the rope, you’ll have to kill 3 Minions first. After you’ve killed them, go back and turn the crank. Then go back to the rope and use it to swing across to the bone ladder. Slide down to the rope below. Shimmy across the rope to the left, and after the fire pad, position yourself above another rope and drop down to it. There will be a few Pests to the right and left of the rope, so kill them. From the left rope, swing across to the bone ladder on the other side of the fire plates. Drop down to the ladder and then to another one when there aren’t any flames blocking your path. When you reach the bottom of the third ladder, a ray of light will shine and break a few walls, but you can’t reach there right now, so drop down off the ladder. Welcome to Heresy... and you should have had the following achievement unlock:
By now you should also have the two following achievements:
When you land you'll see Virgil. Talk to him for:
Rage of Farinata 24/31
- Requirements: None
- Description: All fountains are immediately broken upon use Level 1: Relic is in use.
Proceed through the Demon Door and kill the Throne Demon that appears. This will activate the lever along the left wall. Pull it, and the fires will disappear. Then deal with the Throne Demon and Fire Guardians that appear. Proceed on and to an opening on the left. Climb along the wall until you are back on the ground. In this hallway, you’ll see two fountains. Don’t try to open them yet. A Throne Demon will appear at the far end of the hallway and make its way over to a lever. Make your way over to the same place and kill the Throne Demon. Once you’ve killed it, pull the lever and open the fountains. The one on the right contains Judas Coin 22/30. As you try to make your way to the Demon Door, another Throne Demon will appear and pull the lever. Kill it, and pull the lever again to lower the fire and open the door.
After the door’s opened, you’ll see Virgil. Talk to him, then jump onto a bone ladder on the right. Climb up and open the fountains that you’ll find up here. In one of the corners is the Demon Dog you need to absolve to get:
Calvacanti’s Blade 25/31
- Requirements: None
- Description: Turns Dante’s evade into an attack, knocking enemies back and dealing a small amount of damage Level 1: Relic is in use.
If you’re still looking for Beatrice Stones, Beatrice Stone 6 will be in the fountain next to the Demon Dog.
Go back to where you came from and from there, drop down a couple of bone ladders onto a rope spanning the chasm. Make your way across and drop down again. There will be a Health and a Mana fountain there, as well as Shade 15/27 – Emperor Frederick II. Once you’ve passed judgement and opened the fountains, continue down the ramp. When you enter this room, you’ll meet the Heretic enemy for the first time. You’ll notice a purple orb over the Heretic, which is its special ability. Whenever there’s a Heretic in a fight, either alone or in a group, it’ll be impossible to damage any enemy until the Heretic is defeated. After you kill the first Heretic, a second will appear with a few Minions. Deal with them and proceed through the opening that appears after the gate drops.
Climb across the wall, avoiding the fire, until you come to a Beatrice Statue. Open the two nearby fountains and follow the path. Gates will then rise, causing you to fight a Throne Demon. After you’ve defeated him, a Heretic will appear with a few Fire Guardians. You must deal with the Heretic first in order to defeat Fire Guardians, as they require the Holy Cross attack to defeat them. Once that’s done, pull the lever and a cauldron above you will begin to pour out its contents. Then a statue in the middle of the path will rise, revealing a Demon Door. Open the door and climb along the wall on the left. Once you’re at the top, you’ll see Virgil to talk to. On the left side of the ledge are Health and Mana fountains. Once you’ve spoken to Virgil and broken the fountains, go through the Demon Door.
Once you’re in the next room, make your way to the left side, grab the box, then pull it onto the button in the middle of the room. Once you place it on the button, a ledge in front of the middle flame will shake and rise up a little. Once the platform shakes, hold to push the box onto the platform. Jump up onto the box, then the next ledge. When you attempt to make your way towards the lever, you’ll enter a fight with a Pagan. These creatures are like stronger Heretics, only without the Heretic’s special ability. After killing it, you’ll have to kill another, plus a Heretic. Around here you’ll probably have gotten the following achievement (if not, it’ll happen every soon).
Pull the lever to stop the flames. After the fight go through the doorway on the left, and absolve/punish the Shade 16/27 – Cavalcante de Cavalcanti. Then climb along the wall. When you get to the points where you have to jump across a gap, make sure that no yellow fireballs are falling, or Dante will die.
After jumping across the two streams of lava, you will come to a room with a cauldron in front of you and the giant gold statue on the right. Go to the far end of this room and you will see a crate. To the right of the crate will be a fountain with Judas Coin 23/30 inside.
As you start making your way back to the beginning of Heresy, you'll enter a room with some moving platforms. When you're on the second platform, double jump to the right and there will be an alcove, which is above the first platform. There is a fountain there with Judas Coin 24/30 and a Demon Dog with:
Seal of Epicurus 26/31
- Requirements: Unholy Level 1
- Description: There is a higher chance to perform a critical strike on any attack. Damage from the attack increases by 15% and enemies are knocked down when a critical strike is landed. Level 1: 10%, Level 2: 15%, Level 3: 20%
You can either wait for the second platform to come down or drop down back onto the first to continue. When the second platform reaches the top, jump into the alcove on the left for Shade 17/27 - Farinata. Absolve or punish and get back onto the second platform. Make your way to the third platform. Once you reach the top, pull the lever and the fire will be deactivated. Continue down this path and jump up to a rope at the end.
Once you reach the end, drop down and open the fountain. Pull the lever to empty another cauldron and raise the statue further, eventually destroying it. Jump onto the remains and up to the ledge. There’s a Beatrice Statue here. Open the Demon Door and climb along the wall on the left and drop down once you reach the corner. Open the fountains and drop down the bone ladder. You will reach the ledge with Demon Dog that you have passed a few times but was unable to reach. Open the fountain for Judas Coin 25/30, and absolve the Demon Dog for:
Frederick’s Ring 27/31
- Requirements: Holy Level 5
- Description: When Dante is low on Health, there is a chance to execute Divine Intervention, which both stuns enemies and heals Dante Level 1: 10%, Level 2: 20%, Level 3: 30%
Once you reach the last ledge, a giant wall will break away and you will have to grab onto the climbable wall behind it. Climb up and run down the path. Once you’re out in the open, a rock will fall, blocking the way back and you will receive the following achievement.
Talk with Virgil, then begin your descent into Violence. Use the Beatrice Statue if you wish. Drop down the bone ladder to enter. By the end of this level, you should have received the following achievement.
Once you’ve grabbed the first rope, make your way to the end and drop to the second rope. Do NOT drop to the third rope yet, go all the way to end to the ledge instead. First, open the fountain to find a Judas Coin 26/30, followed by absolving/punishing Shade 18/27 – Atilla and finally absolve the Demon Dog for:
Shoe of Nessus 28/31
- Requirements: Unholy Level 5
- Description: All of Dante’s light Scythe attacks can no longer be evaded by enemies Level 1: Relic is in use.
Continue along, and you'll come to a pair of ships with furnaces that are shooting flames across the decks. On the second ship you will have to kill some Arch Demons. Aftwards, climb halfway down the wall along the left hand side. There is a fountain to break with Judas Coin 27/30. Climb back up and drop down the wall to the left of the furnace. Climb farther along the wall and you will find a Demon Dog with:
Attila’s Armour 29/31
- Requirements: None
- Description: Dante’s attacks will not be interrupted if an enemy blocks them Level 1: Relic is in use.
Jump onto the platform, then quickly jump from there onto another platform, and finally into the cage and out the other end. You will have to be quick about making it from platform to platform and cage because jumping on one will cause it to sink. Once you reach the other side you will hear Lucifer talking. Jump up to the ledge on the left and open the fountain for Judas Coin 28/30.
You'll enter a wooded area of Violence, and will hear a woman calling for Dante. Keep going through the woods, and you'll be attacked by a Heretic and Fiends. After killing them, continue along the path and you'll see Shade 19/27 - Pietro della Vigna sitting on the path.
Continue with proceeding through Violence, and after the cut scene and receiving the Suicide Fruit spell, you will have to continue the fight from before the cut scene, and kill more Minions and Throne Demons.
After they’ve been killed, double jump up to the ledge and you will come to a desert area. Talk with Virgil and then continue towards the Beatrice Statue and open the Health fountain. Continue down the path and open the Mana fountain. Proceed on and get rid of the Exploding Minions. Open the soul fountain and jump up on the block. Double jump up to the ledge to find Shade 20/27 - Brunetto Latini. You must absolve him for the following achievement.
Open the fountain next to him for a Judas Coin 29/30.
Continue ahead and you will be ambushed a couple Heretics, Fire Minions, and a Throne Demon. As you walk ahead, you will see another Shade. Jump over the boiling blood and absolve/punish Shade 21/27 - Guido Guerra. On the ledge near where you jump from will be a fountain. Open it to find the final Judas Coin 30/30.
Enter the building and open the Health and Mana fountains. When you try and continue on, you will come to a large room with an arch at the end. Dante will see the remains of a ship and then have a flashback. Afterwards, you will enter a fight with Damned Crusaders. These creatures are weak and the only thing they have to help them is their shield. After you’ve killed them all, follow the path around and kill off some Fiends. After jumping to the platform, jump up to the platform on the right and kill any fiends that appear. Open the fountain for some souls.
Jump to the ledge on the left and destroy the Demon Dog for:
Memory of Acre 30/31
- Requirements: Holy Level 5
- Description: Dante can no longer be interrupted while executing Cross attacks. Level 1: Relic is in use
Once you reach the next room, you will have to move a platform from the bottom of the room to the top. You will fight off endless waves of Minions and Throne Demons. To move on, push the platform up to the top and jump the two ledges on the left. Jump on the platform as it SLOWLY rolls back down and jump to the ledge with the Health Fountain.
Climb the wall and follow the path to the Beatrice Statue, Mana fountain, and Virgil. Talk with him before you climb down. Slide down the bone ladder in front of him and get ready for the boss fight.
Boss Fight - Francesco
When you land, Francesco will appear. He’s sort of a weaker version of Marc Antony. Most of his attacks are short range attacks. He has a couple of quick slash attacks. If you are far enough away from him, he will throw a sword at you and then pull another one out of his back. Eventually, he will throw a sword and it will get stuck in the ground. Then go to the sword to grab and throw it at Francesco to break his shield. You can also break the shield by attacking him enough. I found that constantly mashing for Holy attacks were the best way to deal with him.
While his shield is destroyed, give him hell and use any attack that you know to lower his health. His shield is his main source of power. It will greatly reduce the amount of damage he takes, but without it, his defence is very weak.
After a while without his shield, he will create a new shield and summon 3 Damned Captains at the same time. The physical difference between Crusaders and Captains is that the Captain's shields are surrounded in flames. Keep attacking him until he has no health left and appears above him. When that does, Dante will jump in his back and you will have to quickly press to pull out the sword that goes through his heart.
After you do that, you will receive:
Francesco’s Forgiveness 31/31
- Requirements: None
- Description: Dante is protected from all enemy damage Level 1: 5% damage protection, Level 2: 10% damage protection, Level 3: 15% damage protection.
You’ll receive the following achievement:
Also as you've now collected all the Relics, you should have received these two in the process
The platform will begin to descend and you’ll have to fight off Damned Captains, a pair of Arch Demons, and a pair of Heretics. Once you reach the bottom, you will have entered Fraud.
After you have killed the Malacoda, continue across the bridge. As you continue down the path, you will see the Shade 22/27 - Thias the Harlot on ledge to the right of a Demon Door to absolve or punish.
After opening the door, pull the lever to lower the lift. Once you reach the bottom, open the Health and Mana fountains and follow the path to the right. Open the door and you will hear Beatrice's voice. You'll now start one of many "Trials" that you'll have to do to get through Fraud. This room is for the Panderers and Seducers. In each challenge, you will be given and objective. If you can complete the objective within a certain time limit, you will receive 1,500 bonus souls per challenge.
There’s no major necessity to complete the challenges, but there are some that will greatly help with certain achievements. I will tell you when to do certain things to get the specific achievements. I also recommend putting a save point here (in a different save slot), as for will need to come back on a harder difficulty to do one achievement during these challenges (this is only the requirement if you do not have or intend to get the DLC - Trials of St. Lucia). It will save you a lot of hassle having to replay a lot of the game again. Even though I mention relics that are recommended to equip, there's no necessity to use them. It may make some of the "Trials" a little harder, but not impossible.
Once you open the door, jump onto the platform. As you approach the other side, you will need to jump because the platform will go into the hole in the wall and you will fall. Go to the centre of the arena to activate the Challenge.
Panderers and Seducers
Infinite Magic Objective: Kill all Enemies using Infinite Mana
Bonus Soul objective: Complete in under 75 seconds
Because you have unlimited amounts of Mana, it is recommended to constantly use Sins of the Father. If you are playing on a lower difficulty, the amount of damage the enemies take before they die is lowered, making it easier to complete in the time limit for the bonus souls.
This is also an excellent place to get a few achievements. Through this challenge, it is possible to get the following
If you are going for "Poetry in Motion" you may need to come back and do the challenge on Infernal difficulty otherwise the challenge may be complete before you reach a combo of 666. Some useful relics for this challenge are Coin of Plutus, Medusa's Call and Tristan's Desire. The only catch is you have to have Holy Level 5 to use Medusa's Call. After the challenge is complete, a bridge will fall and you can proceed.
Go across the bridge and climb along the wall. Once you make your way to the other end of the wall, open the Health and Mana fountains and use the Beatrice Statue, if you wish (for the challenges it's recommended to save in different slots until you have obtained all the achievements possible). Follow the path to the left and open the Demon Door to the next room. There will be a metal claw hanging from the ceiling with a grapple point inside. The claw will close so you will have to be quick about crossing otherwise the claw will close and Dante will fall and die. Head towards the centre to activate the next challenge
100 Combo Objective: Get a 100-hit combo
Bonus soul objective: Complete in under 30 seconds
As compared to fighting about 1 out of every 4 creatures you have met in the previous challenge, the only creatures you need to fight in this challenge are Guardian Demons and Greed Minions. You can either keep slashing away with the Scythe or spamming the Holy Cross. Either way, once you reach a 100-hit combo, any remaining enemies will instantly die and a bridge will fall to the arena.
The useful relics for this challenge are Coin of Plutus, Memory of Acre and Shoe of Nessus. To use Memory of Acre, you need to be Holy Level 5 and to use Shoe of Nessus, you need to be Unholy Level 5.
You will receive this achievement if you complete the challenge, if you don't have the achievement already.
Cross the bridge and pull the lever on the platform. As the platform falls, jump when you see the opening on the left side, you must jump. Otherwise you will fall to your death. Go down the path, open the fountains and save at the Beatrice Statue. Open the Demon Door and jump across the platforms to the next challenge.
Air Kills Objective: Kill 5 enemies while they are airborne
Bonus souls objective: Complete in under 1 minute
None of the enemies you will face fly naturally, this challenge can be pretty tough the get the bonus souls from. There will always be a Guardian Demon and 2 Damned Captains in the arena at once. The only enemy that you will be able to get into the air is the Guardian Demon. Keep hammering away at them until appears above them. Hold to perform Diabolic Ascension and keep using the Light attacks until they die. Repeat this until the challenge is complete and the bridge falls down.
Cross the bridge, then jump to grab the rope. Swing over, and drop down onto the bone ladder. Slide down onto another rope and swing scross. Once you've dropped down from the second rope there's Shade 23/27 - Tiresias to pass judgement on. Open the fountains and save at the Beatrice Statue. Open the Demon Door to continue. To make your way to the arena, jump onto the platform when it reaches the ledge you are on. It won't stay and I wouldn't recommend walking onto it. You will have to jump onto a falling platform. Once it drops and hits the wall, it pops right back up and stays for a few seconds.
Stay in the Air Objective: Stay in the air for 8 seconds
Bonus souls objective: Kill 2 enemies while completing challenge in the air
The only enemies that you will have to deal with are a pair of Guardian Demons. This is probably the best chance at getting "Poetry in Motion" when your Holy Path is high enough. Just keep using your highest Holy Cross attack (preferable Holy Barrage or Holy devastation) on them until you reach 666. You will want to have Coin of Plutus equipped to help you reach 666 because it increases the amount of time that you have to attack and maintain your Hit Counter. You will want to keep the Demons on opposite sides. Once you have hit the maximum amount of times on one Demon, turn around and do the same thing to the other Demon. There will times where it is hard to keep them on opposite sides. If they block your attacks long enough, your timer will reset because the hits have to land. Holy Devastation comes in handy here because the final wave is unblockable.
This one is kind of tough. You have to remain in the air for 8 seconds in one jump. The best way to do this is to weaken one of the Demons down until appears. You will want to punish the Demon and have the finisher be the one where you jump on its back and try to decapitate it. The best way to do this without the Demon throwing you off are to hit three times, count to one, and repeat with tapping three times and pausing, until the challenge is over and the bridge drops.
Get on the the elevator and destroy the wheel. You'll, again, have to jump off the elevator at the right time to continue along. When you've jumped across, continue along and again destroy the fountains and use the Beatrice Statue. Open the Demon Door on the right and you will see a platform with a crank on it. Turn it until the platform lines up with the arena and then a little more. Once you let go of the crank, the platform will quickly begin to return to its original position.
Protect Innocent Objective: Destroy all enemies and protect the human
Bonus souls objective: Keep all innocents alive
There will be two humans in the lower corners of the arena and Exploding Minions will spawn from the upper corners of the arena. The main goal is to keep at least one civilian alive long enough to complete the challenge. As time ticks away (however, there is no timer), the Minions will begin spawning faster. When the challenge first begins, you can grab them and throw them; however, you will want to be careful where you aim because if you throw them into the humans, they will die. If both of the humans die, you will automatically fail the challenge. As you progress farther through the challenge, the Minions will begin spawning 2-4 at a time. Your best bet is to stand near the centre and keep using Holy Cross attacks. Once you hit them, they will divert their attention towards you. If they happen to kill one of the humans, move from the middle to in front of the remaining human because the Minions travel in a straight path from their spawn corner to the human corner, unless you hit them first.
Cross the bridge once it drops. You will have to manoeuvre your way along the ropes and drop from rope to rope until you reach the fourth rope and you will end up over the ledge. Walk down it, open the Health and Mana fountains and use the Beatrice Statue. Open the Demon Door and to reach the arena in this challenge is sort of like reaching it for the second challenge. The difference is that this claw will wiggle a little before the grapple point becomes visible.
No Magic Objective: Kill all Enemies without using Mana
Bonus souls objective: Complete in under 1 minute
The first wave of enemies you have to face include a Throne Demon and some Damned Crusaders. Once you have killed off all of them, the next wave will appear, consisting of a Heretic (who will usually appear first), some Damned Captains, and more Damned Crusaders. Once you have killed off about half of the wave, a Beast Tamer, riding an Asterian Beast, will push down the bridge and the challenge will be cancelled. You will still have to survive the enemy onslaught, but now you are allowed to use Magic since the challenge was cancelled when the Beast entered the arena, which means no bonus souls.
Once have taken control of the Beast, a giant statue will fall. The Beast will grab it and you will have to hit quickly a few times to have the Beast toss it back up. You will dismount the Beast and land on top of a giant piece of falling rubble. As you are falling, you will be prompted to swing across using and then will fall and grab onto a rope.
Once you land on the rope, shimmy to the left and drop down. Open the Health and Mana fountains near the Beatrice Statue and save if you want. Go to the right and open the Demon Door to enter the next room. To reach the arena, jump onto the first platform when it comes near the ledge. About halfway there, jump onto the second platform and quickly jump up to the arena because the ledge goes into a hole in the wall and Dante will fall to his death.
Losing Health Objective: Kill all enemies-before health depletes
Bonus souls objective: Complete in under 1 minute
There are three waves in this challenge. During the fights, Dante's health will slowly begin to be chipped away. If you have already purchased Divine Armour or Blessed Spirit Tap, you probably won't notice your health depleting because you will just as easily regain it. The first wave includes some Fiends and Minions, and overall isn't very hard. The next wave will include some Guardian Demons and Seductresses of Lust. If you have Shoe of Nessus and can equip it, it will be very useful in killing the Seductresses. The final wave has some Damned Crusaders and a Glutton. Once you have killed off the final wave, the bridge will be lowered, allowing you to proceed.
When you reach the lift, you will see an interaction point on the climbable wall. You will have to scale the wall to reach the next area. There is a reason for the lift to be there however. Once you have made it far enough down the wall, the chains will break and the lift will begin free falling. If you are underneath the lift, you will be killed and have to start climbing again. Once you reach the end of the wall, head down the hall and open the fountains and use the Beatrice Statue. Open the Demon Door on the left and enter the next room. When you enter this room, you will see a line of fire in front of the arena. There will be a platform that will pass underneath the fire. When it reaches the ledge jump on it. Jump over the fire and onto the arena before the platform reaches the hole.
7. Evil Counsellors
No Block Objective: Kill all Enemies-while unable to block
Bonus souls objective: Complete in under one minute.
At first glance, this challenge doesn't seem to be too hard. You start out having to kill a pair of Hoarder-Wasters. Once they have been destroyed, you may wish that you were able to block. The next wave includes Minions and a pair of Seductresses. The best way to keep them busy is to use Sins of the Father on them while you take out the Minions, then you will be able to focus your attention on them. Once you have killed them off because they will most likely be the last enemies you take out, the bridge will fall and you can proceed.
When you cross the bridge, drop down the bone ladder on the left side of the ledge. From there you will have to drop down to a rope and shimmy across to the other side. Once you reach the other side, drop down and grab onto the climbable wall. Make your way down and around and pull yourself up. Open the fountains and save at the Beatrice Statue, then open the Demon Door at the end of the hallway. To reach the arena, you will have to turn another platform with a crank in the centre. You will want to turn this one a little farther than you did with the previous challenge that had this entrance because there is a fire gate on the platform that you will have to jump over.
8. Sowers of Discord
Single Combo Objective: Kill all Enemies without resetting the Hit Counter
Bonus souls objective: Complete in under 1 minute.
The enemies you have to face are a bunch of Minions, Babies and some Guardian and Throne Demons. Because the challenge is to kill all enemies in one combo, you will definitely want to have Coin of Plutus equipped. The best way to go about this challenge is to continuously use Holy Cross attacks. To make this challenge a little easier, also equip Lord's Blessing, to increase the damage Holy Cross attacks inflict, and Medusa's Call (if you can), to increase the damage your ranged and projectile attacks inflict. Do not pass judgment on any enemies because in the time it would take to do so, your Hit Counter will most likely be reset. When a Demon is in the arena, focus on it. The other enemies you will have to kill will usually die after using Holy Devastation and having each wave land, but the Demons take a little longer to kill. Once all enemies have been vanquished, the bridge will drop.
Go to the elevator and pull the lever. The elevator will begin to drop rapidly, but it will stop once you reach the next hallway so there is no need to jump off. Once the lift stops, you will see Shade 24/27 - Myrrha. Judge her and continue on, opening the fountains and saving at the Beatrice Statue. Open the Demon Door for your final challenge. To reach this arena, you will have to ride the platform while jumping over two fire fences before the platform reaches its hole.
Endurance Test Objective: Kill all Enemies
Bonus souls objective: Complete in under 5 minutes
Just by looking at the Bonus souls challenge, you should get the idea that there is a reason why this test is named the Endurance Test. Hopefully you have remembered the easiest way to kill every enemy you have faced up to this point. In this challenge, you will face every enemy that can be found in your Bestiary, except for the bosses. If this is your first playthrough, odds are, you probably won't finish in under 5 minutes. The best relics to have equipped for this challenge are Lord's Blessing, Death Blade, Francesco's Forgiveness, and Ciacco's Bile. If you don't have enough room for all of them, just pick and choose which ones you want to use, you can always switch them out at any time during the challenge. If you have any "Kill X amount of enemies" achievements remaining, the likelihood here is that you will unlock the rest. The bridge will drop and you can proceed on.
Once you reach the end of the bridge, Beatrice will appear before you. You'll have a cut scene and then receive the following achievement.
Continue out of the arena and go to the left. Almost as soon as you disappear behind the wall, you will find Virgil. After talking to him, look down the path and you will see some fountains, a Beatrice Statue, and a Shade 25/27 - Judge Fra Alberigo. Save at the Beatrice Statue and climb down the bone ladder. Drop down the second bone ladder onto a rope. When you reach the rope, you will see one of the giants Virgil talked of. Shimmy across the rope to the end and drop down onto the platform. You will be ambushed by plenty of Pests and eventually an Arch Demon. There will be another giant behind this ledge and he will breathe across the arena. When he does, keep jumping back towards him (although you can't reach him) as he will try and blow you off the ledge. Once you have killed off the two Arch Demons, some grapple points will appear to the right. Swing from the first point over to the rope.
Once you are on the rope, you will have to get to the bottom and start swinging towards the right and break the object in your way. Once you do, jump over to the bone ladder. Go to the top, and you will find two soul fountains and a Damned soul on top. After judging Shade 26/27 -Mordred, slide down the bone ladder. When you reach the bottom, wait for the giant to stop breathing. Let go and grapple to the first point. Swing over to the second point and then over to the bone ladder.
Once you land, you will slide down the icy slope. You will stop in front of Virgil and this will be the last time you will talk to him. If you have collected all of them up to this point, you will receive the following while talking with him the first time.
You must now make your way across the bridge. There is only one safe path, and it is very narrow. If you step off the path, the ice will begin to shake beneath you and fall away a few seconds later. If you look closely as you make your way along the bridge, you will see that the safe path is just a bit lower than the unsafe areas. Once you reach the end of the bridge, go to the left to find a Health and Mana fountain and the final Shade 27/27 - Count Ugolino. Pass judgment to receive the following if you’ve absolved/punished all of them.
Punish or absolve all 27 shades of The Inferno
Then save using the final Beatrice Statue. Destroy the breakable object and the ice will break beneath you. Prepare yourself for the final battle.
Boss Fight - Lucifer
As you fall, you will see that the chain you just destroyed held Lucifer's hands together. When you regain control of Dante the fight will begin. Lucifer will begin to pound the arena with his fists. When he does this, a fast-moving shockwave will be emitted. The shockwave will not encompass the whole arena so if you move towards either the left or the right, you will only have to avoid them when he slams nearby.
After he slams the arena a few times, a light will shine in the centre of the arena. This will happen when he slams the arena and icicles come out of the ground. Run to it and press , and be quick in getting there because the light doesn't last very long. When you are hovering close to his face, attack him a few times with light Scythe attacks or combos until he rears back in pain, sort of how King Minos did. Then attack his lower stomach using Holy Cross attacks.
After a few blows from Holy Cross, he will use his wings to create a strong gust across the arena. He will then send out two tornadoes in the arena. If you get caught in them, hit quickly to get out. Once he gets down around 50% health remaining, he will slam his fists into the arena quicker and use both hands at times. After stunning him using the light in the centre of the arena about 4 times, he will switch to the next phase.
He will then open his chest and a smaller form will appear. In this fight, your Holy Cross attacks won't work as well on him as before and he can return them to you, so you will have to rely on your Scythe.
Lucifer has a few attacks in this form. His first one is a pair of slashes at you with his sword and then the third slash will send a wave of energy towards you. He will also try and push you out of the way, which won't hurt you at all. On occasion, he will also jump up and you will receive some Health and Mana. He will then slam back down into the ground, emitting a shockwave that encompasses pretty much the whole arena.
He can also use fire to teleport somewhere in the arena and he will use one of two attacks. He will either send out about 6-8 shockwaves, each one faster than the previous one, or he will throw about 4 darts of concentrated energy towards you, and will charge the fifth one. If the final one hits, it will take out a hefty chunk of health, so try and dodge out of the way.
You will want to use Redemption whenever you have the chance because your Scythe attacks will still seem like they are doing little damage to him because of how much health he has. Once you get him down to around 25% of his health, the fight will pause while he talks.
The fight will then continue and Lucifer will be flying around the arena. He will still use most of the attacks he used earlier, except he will not fight with his sword. You will have to press to grapple to his horns and then attack him in the air.
Once Lucifer reappears over the centre of the arena, he will breathe fire into the centre of the pentagram. The five circles at each point of the pentagram will rise. You will have to swing from circle to circle until you reach Lucifer. When you reach the bottom of each platform, you will begin to fall and you will have to hit as you are falling to grab onto the next platform. Once you make your way to the fifth platform, hit again and you will grab onto Lucifer. He will begin to fly up and you will have to move the Left analog stick left, then right when prompted to avoid his attacks. The next sequence will have you pressing and then hitting rapidly. The two of you will fall back to the arena and there will be an explosion.
You’ll receive a final cut scene and the story is now over. You’ll receive
Now you’ve completed your first run of the story, load up the game save in Resurrection Mode. As long as you play in Resurrection mode, you will keep all you relics that you have collected, abilities you have purchased, and experience you have gained. You will start from right after you jump down into Hell.
You can mop up any remaining achievements you missed on your first playthrough. However, you will have to re-find all the Pieces of Silver, Shades, and Virgil commentaries if you missed any of them (which means playing up until the Lucifer fight again if you need Virgil and the Shades); although, if you received all Achievements for finding all of them, it won't really matter. When you go up to a Beatrice Statue, you will be able to change Dante's costume there as well as saving your progress. You will also be able to play on Infernal difficulty, the highest difficulty, if you dare to choose it.
You’ll be able to end your second playthrough once you have the following (though you may have two already if you chose to stick with one skill path).
And if you haven’t done your counter-attacks by the end of your first playthrough, make sure you’ve equipped Hoarder’s Purse Relic (to increase the counter attack window), and Filipo’s Rage Relic (as when the relic is at level 2 you can auto-counter).
