Chess Ultra

Hey everyone, it's KinectKid333 here with a walkthrough for Chess Ultra. I really love chess as a game and have been a part-time chess coach for nearly four years now, rated 1900 USCF, so I'm thrilled to write this walkthrough. If you ever want to play a game of chess with me, send me a message on TA or XBL. I'm down for a good game of chess anytime.

The games in this walkthrough were composed by myself and my chess coach, an International Master (one of the best chess players in the world!), to earn all the achievements in the most efficient way possible. Basically, this walkthrough is premium world-class content. Enjoy!

But I know what you're here for. You don't really want to play chess. You just want to earn all the achievements! Good news, this game is very easy to complete. It's even easier if you already know how to play chess. There is only one achievement for winning a 32-player tournament that is a pain in the rear, but it is definitely manageable for anybody who is willing to put in a few hours creating fake emails and Microsoft accounts. Other than that, you should be able to get 37/38 achievements (950/1000 GS) in 3 to 5 hours. Here's a quick breakdown of what this completion will entail:

  • 25 achievements related to in-game chess tasks
  • 4 achievements related to beating strong opponents
  • 4 achievements related to winning online tournaments
  • 3 achievements related to completing all tutorials and challenges (tactics)
  • 2 achievements related to creating online games

There's no point in wasting time with any more riffraff. Let's get started, shall we?

If you don't know how to play chess, I would recommend taking your time with the game's tutorial instead of speeding through it as fast as possible. You'll need to play it anyway for one of the achievements. The tutorial will teach you everything you need to know, but you can use the document below to reference any of the rules if you need to.

Please note that page 1 on the document is actually page 2, and page 2 is actually page 1.

https://1drv.ms/b/s!AkK1-N_CM-yWhZo1PTj4yTcHD_TxeQ

Load up the game. Click on the tutorials box, then click on the first tutorial, Movement - 01. If you know how to play chess, you should be able to speed through all of the tutorials fairly quickly. If you don't know how to play chess, you will need to read the tutorials or refer to the document on the previous page of this walkthrough. An understanding of chess rules is required to complete this game. You shouldn't have any problems with the tutorials since the solutions are right on the screen for most of them. For the tutorials where the solution is not on the screen or blatantly obvious, I've made a note of the solution next to its name in the list below. If you need to stop halfway through the tutorial, don't worry. The game saves your progress after every tutorial block and will tell you which ones you've already completed. Below is a list of all of the tutorials. They will take around 7 minutes if you go through them as quickly as possible.

Next, we are going to do some chess challenges. These can be found by going to the "Challenges" box from the main menu. Below are the solutions to every chess challenge in the game, courtesy of checo316. Please note that in some of the puzzles, the computer has multiple different lines that it can take, and it may take a few attempts for the solution to work. If a solution fails, simply try again.

Blunder #1, Blunder #2, and Blunder #3

These problems showcase famous blunders (bad moves) from famous chess games. You will be playing as the blundering player one move before they blunder. The game will tell you to avoid the blunder and to find a different move. You must then go on to win the game. Unfortunately, the computer will vary which moves it makes, so there isn't a definitive solution. These puzzles will be impossible for most people without computer assistance unless you are a very strong chess player, since the AI will rarely blunder and play mostly perfectly. Luckily, there are free programs online which can tell you the best chess move in any position. We will use this method to solve these puzzles.

  • Go here: https://lichess.org/study/vfNhvTgs
  • Go to the menu and move the "Multiple Lines" slider from 1 to 5. Also make sure the "Best Move Arrow" option is on.
  • Look at the move the blue arrow indicates. Be sure to give the engine a few seconds to think for each move. Make the move on the analysis board, then make the move on Chess Ultra.
  • When the computer makes a move on Chess Ultra, make that move on the analysis board, regardless of what the blue arrow says. Repeat until checkmate occurs.
  • Use the tabs on the left side of the page to progress to the next challenge.

For Blunder #2, sometimes the computer has trouble finding the best second move. After you play F5 to G6 (fxg6) and the AI responds with F7 to G6* (fxg6), you should play G3 to F4 (Kf4). This is the best continuation. After that, let the computer work its magic. Additionally, this challenge may take a long time for you to win since the endgame is theoretically a draw (tie).
*If the AI does not respond with this pawn recapture and instead recaptures with their queen or moves their king, congratulations! The AI has already blundered. Simply make the AI's move on the analysis board and continue as normal.

Go to Single Game -> New Game -> Continue. Change the timer setting to "Fischer timer." Then change the opponent to "Grandmaster." Now start the game.

You must now win this game using the same method we used to complete the "Blunder" tactics:

  • Go here: https://lichess.org/analysis
  • Go to the menu and move the "Multiple Lines" slider from 1 to 5. Also make sure the "Best Move Arrow" option is on. If you are Black in Chess Ultra and need to flip the board, you can do that here, too.

Once you win the game, you will unlock at least six achievements.

Press the stop button to go back to the main menu.

Next, you will need a boosting partner or an alternate account. Make sure you are XBL friends with your boosting partner or alternate account. You will have to restart your game if you add them while the game is active. If you choose to use an alternate account, you only need one Xbox, but you will be switching profiles after every move and there will be a lot of loading screens. You might want to put on some music, TV, YouTube, etc. If you have the ability to double-box, you might want to consider doing so because it will significantly decrease the amount of loading screens. If you choose to find a boosting partner, make sure you are coordinated, then switch off with each other for earning the achievements.

The following six games will earn you every single achievement related to in-game chess tasks. If you've been following the walkthrough, you will already have a lot of these from the tutorials and challenges. You can do the games in any order, but three of the games require you to be white, two require you to be black, and one of them you can be either color.

If you are using an alternate account, you will need to play one game on the alternate account before you can challenge them. From the main menu, press cn_Y and sign-in to your alternate account. Then click Single Game -> New Game -> Continue. Set the timer to "None" and set the opponent to "Computer." Then start the game. Make any move, then pause the game and select "Resign." Return to the main menu and switch back to your main account. Now you are ready to challenge your alternate account.

From the main menu, click Single Game -> New Game -> Continue. Set the timer to "None" and set the opponent to "Friend." Now find your boosting partner or alternate account in the list of players. Select them and start the game. Note that your color is random, so you may have to start a few games if you don't get the color that you need to be. However, once again, you can complete the games in any order, so you shouldn't encounter this problem until at least the fourth game. When handling the account that was challenged, you can find the game automatically appears if you click into the "Single Game" box.

Use the tabs on the left to switch between games. The color in parenthesis signifies the color which will earn the achievements. Now simply recreate the moves from the games in Chess Ultra. If you are boosting or double-boxing, the game will update in real time and you can completely play the games very quickly. If you are using an alternate account on the same Xbox, you will need to exit to the main menu to switch accounts after every move. To do this, press start, select quit, then press cn_Y at the main menu to change your profile. Go to Single Game and select the game you are working on. Now you are ready to make your next move.

Once your "Single Game" area fills up with six games, simply hover over any game and press cn_X to free up a slot.

Next we need to win a tournament of 32 players. Here you have two options:

  1. You can create a barrage of alternate accounts and boost tournament wins with yourself. This is the easier, yet more time consuming method. It will take you around 1 to 2 hours to create enough accounts for the 32-player tournament.
  2. Or, you could attempt to earn the tournament win legit. This is possible, but will require long-term dedication and a bit of luck.

First of all, make sure you have cross-network play turned ON. This can be found in the options block from the main menu.

First method: Alternate Account Boosting

  1. You will need to create 31 new email addresses and Microsoft accounts and recover them to your Xbox. Each Xbox can hold a maximum of 32 gamertags at once, so you might have to wait to recover a few if you have family members/friends with accounts on your Xbox.
  2. Make sure your main account is friends with all of your alternate accounts.
  3. Launch Chess Ultra. Start a game, make a move, then resign. Repeat with all 31 accounts.
  4. Go back to your main account. Create a 32-person tournament by going Tournament -> New Tournament -> Continue -> Set players to 32, timer to none, and opponents to friends -> Select all 31 of your alternate accounts. Make sure the box on the right says that all of the tournament slots are filled. Then start the tournament.
  5. Switch to one of your alternate accounts. Go to tournament, and the 32-player tournament should be in their menu. Hover over it and press cn_X to delete it. Repeat with every alternate account.
  6. Go back to your main account and go into the 32-player tournament. Voila! You are now the winner of a 32-player tournament. The achievement should unlock when you look at the bracket.

Second method: Winning "legit"

The only reason this method is viable is because this game is littered with people that join tournaments and then never participate. In a regular 32-player tournament (31 games), you'd be lucky if 5 games made it past move 2. The problem is... those 5 games. There is a 3-day time limit per move, and a chess game could last 20 moves, 40 moves, 60 moves, or longer. One single game could take longer than an entire month. Also, where there is online chess, there are cheaters, and the developers for this game do not police the online to watch for cheaters. That means in the games that you actually need to play, you could be going against an opponent who always knows the best move. Your only chance for beating this type of opponent is to time them out, and there's no guaranteed way to do that. For these reasons I don't recommend this method, but if you don't want to bother creating 31 alternate accounts, you could give it a shot.

Create/join a 32-person tournament. I would recommend joining a tournament with no timer. In the tournaments with timers, I always seemed to time out before I even realized it was my turn to make a move. Now all you have to do is wait. Check the game every day to see if your opponent has moved or to claim your win. There's not much else I can say other than to hope you run into a tournament full of 31 no-shows. Even with a tournament full of no-shows, the tournament will likely last at least one or two weeks. Again, you should be checking the game every day during this time. Good luck if you choose to attempt this method, you will need it.

With that out of the way, we just need to boost the last 19 tournament wins.

  1. You should already have 31 alternate accounts from the 32-player achievement. If you don't have these because you went with the second method, don't worry, for the last two achievements we only need three alternate accounts. Make sure you have three alternate accounts on your Xbox if you don't already. Make sure they are friends with your main account, and make sure they have played at least one game of chess on Chess Ultra. Alternatively, you could boost these tournament wins with other players since it is infinitely easier to coordinate with four players than it is to coordinate with 32 players, but you can boost all 19 wins with yourself in just 45 minutes, even if you don't have the three alternate accounts set up. If you already have the three alternate accounts, it takes even less time - less than 30 minutes. Simply boosting with yourself will probably be less of a hassle, overall.
  2. Create a 4-person tournament on your main account. Select your three alternate accounts for the gamers to invite to the tournament.
  3. Switch to one of your alternate accounts. Go to tournament, and the tournament should be in their menu. Hover over it and press cn_X to delete it. Repeat with the other two alternate accounts.
  4. Go back to your main account and view the tournament bracket. You should have another tournament win. Check the achievement tracker to make sure progress goes up after every tournament. Repeat 18 more times. You can press cn_X over a tournament to delete it after you gain progress from it.

After five tournament wins, you will earn:
