Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

This is the shooter adaption of the tabletop game Warhammer 40k and even for people which aren't friends of the franchise, it's an incredible game. Sadly the multiplayer doesn't live up to the expectations, but nonetheless it's a decent third person shooter and will keep people entertained for quite some time.

I will separate this game into a Campaign and Multiplayer section and even through the fact that you have to nearly play through the game twice, it doesn't diminish the experience. Also, I will add a collectible guide for the skulls which are scattered through the game and give the whole experience a more grim touch (floating skulls are not an everyday experience).

So, in the name of the emperor, burn the heretics and cleanse the planet of the alien scum!

I will now provide a few tips which i found out during my struggle against the aliens and heretics:

Use kill animations only if necessary! I know they are a brilliant cinematic experience and after you finally damaged a tough enemy enough you can't wait to cut him into tiny bits, BUT you are not invincible during the sequence, meaning surrounding enemies will use that to their advantage. I died quite a few times because of that, so the only tip I can give here is to please only execute enemies when you are sure that you can't die (meaning no other enemies, far away enemies or too few to inflict enough damage on you) OR if your health is pretty depleted and you desperately need some (replenishes health when done succesfully)

Shoot your weapons before you charge in!! Don't let Khorne (god of blood) take the best of you and lose yourself in senseless bloodbaths, stay focused and take potshots whenever you can. You can't prevent close combat from happening (not that I think you would ever want that) but you can even the odds by shooting at the hordes, maybe taking out 3-5 enemies before they reach you or at least weaken them a little bit.

Use rage frequently since it will replenish your health slowly as well as increasing the damage dealt in melee combat (later on it will enable you to slow mo shoot enemies), but give it some thought when you use it. Using it for one ork is not very effective, but using it during a battle where your shield gets depleted and more orks ought to come, well, at least take some of them with you!!

Grenades are useful to slow enemy advances (well, never saw meat chunks still willing to attack me xD) but also are great ways to weaken or thin enemy lines. Replenish as often as possible since you will use them quite frequently.

Restock on ammo whenever possible since you will certainly need every shot in every weapon you have.

Make sure you have the best weapons at your disposal. There are actually 2 good melee weapons (energy axe and hammer, but sadly you only can use the pistol or bolter with the hammer) and a few good ranged weapons (i preferred las kanon, plasma weapon, melter and bolter, but it's really up to you). Having the right weapons for the right job can make the difference between life and death.

I will start here with the story part. Basically it's sufficient to do the game on Hard to get all the story related achievements, but there are some miscellaneous achievements which are rather easier on a lower difficulty and that's why I will provide two story segments, Hard and Easy. The collectibles aren't too tough to find and basically you can either get them on hard or a lower difficulty, really up to you. The missions are also pretty straightforward, but in case someone should struggle I will provide videos as well to give you a basic idea on it.

HARD STORY PLAYTHROUGH

Choose from the main menu campaign and start a new campaign on Hard. This is only for the story playthrough on hard, I will go into detail on other achievements later on. I recommend getting the skulls in this playthrough, however you can simply load previously played chapters as well. BUT do not use that BEFORE you have actually finished the whole game because it will void your achievement! Play through it all on hard and do the rest afterwards. However, on your conquest through the campaign on Hard, I can give some basic tips.

Range before Melee! I can't say it often enough, but knowing when to melee and when to retreat is crucial for your survival. Taking out ranged enemies ASAP is crucial and fortunately melee enemies will concentrate on your teammates rather than you unless you attack them first and catch their attention. The only thing is, Squigs (small exploding guys) go only for you, so keep an eye out for those. Also, never encounter any sort of champion or heavy enemy in melee unless you know that he's pretty weak, lost his shield, bound for execution, etc. and executing them might leave you vulnerable but you mostly won't deal enough damage to kill them within that time limit. Also if you die a lot, try a different approach or simply remember when which enemy appears. With that said, you are set for the hard playthrough.

If done correctly you should get the following achievements. I won't give detailed info on the game since it is pretty linear but for those who struggle, I recommend the videos provided (although I don't take credit for them).

Now we go for a specific achievement for finishing the first part on hard. This might sound tougher than it is. Simply choose distance before melee and NEVER go for executions unless there's only one of the Orks left. Also don't draw the attention of the melee Orks until you have dispatched the ranged Orks. This is from chapter 1-4 and as soon as you shoot down the carrier, the achievement should pop.

Congrats on the Hard playthrough, now we will go to the mop up which is quite a lot.

MISCELLANEOUS ACHIEVEMENTS

I will start with the achievements for going through a whole chapter of a level with a specific set of weapons. Keep in mind that grenades void the achievements! Also you don't have to play through the whole chapter, so simply load up the last checkpoint and play through the relatively short parts and do it on Easy rather than on Hard.

Master of Sword and Gun

Load up Chapter 3 : Belly of the Beast, on the last checkpoint and do not use any other weapons other than the Bolt Pistol and the Chain Sword. As soon as you're done you will have a small comtalk and head across a bridge. Cross that bridge until the achievement pops, DO NOT exit the game before that!!

Finesse and Fury

Complete a Chapter of the single-player game using only Stalker-Pattern Bolter and Chainsword.

Load up chapter 6 : Lair of Giants, again on the last checkpoint and only use your Plasma Pistol! Go for the objectives as soon as they appear and can be activated. Keep using charged shots on the big Orks to dispatch them quickly, let the video sequence end and wait until the new chapter loads and the achievements pops.

Brute Force...Unleashed

Complete a Chapter of the single-player game using only the Vengeance Launcher and Power Axe.

Brute Force...Unleashed
3 guidesOffline Game ModeSingle Player

Same checkpoint as above but this time you are allowed to use melee. However, don't use it on the big Orks, use the launcher and blow them to bits since it's safer and pretty much a higher damage output.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I go for the multikill and kills in a time window achievements. Of course I will tell you the best places to get them.

Precision Killer

Multi-kill -- 2 enemies with 1 Stalker-Pattern bolter shot.

Precision Killer
2 guidesOffline Game ModeSingle Player

This one might sound hard, but it really isn't. Search for one of the earlier chapters (2-4) and keep the Stalker Bolter on you all the time. You will encounter a lot of big Gretchin (small Orks) crowds. Now simply wait until 2 are in a row or close enough to die from the same bullet, pull the trigger and wait for the achievement to unlock.

Blast Radius

Multi-kill -- 5 enemies with 1 Frag grenade.

Blast Radius
1 guideOffline Game ModeSingle Player

I got this by coincidence and without even trying for it. I recommend again using it on Gretchins as every time they come in big swarms and like to cluster close together. It will come, just try on each occasion until you get it.

Chain of Death

Multi-kill -- Detonate a chain of 5 consecutive Vengeance Launcher rounds, killing 10 enemies.

Chain of Death
3 guidesOffline Game ModeSingle Player

This one is a tricky one and it took me several tries to get it. A grenade detonates from the launcher with a tap of the RB and you can't have more than 5 active at a time, placing more detonates previous grenades. A chain only counts if you tap the button and DON'T release it so they detonate in order of placement. A pretty good place in my opinion is chapter 3 : Belly of the Beast on the last checkpoint, but of course you can try for it whenever you see swarms of enemies. This might take some time, so be patient!

The Emperor's Marksman

Kill 10 enemies in a row in a single Ranged Fury activation.

The Emperor's Marksman
4 guidesOffline Game ModeSingle Player

At chapter 3 : the Belly of the Beast, the last checkpoint, you unlock the ranged fury attack. This is also the perfect spot to get this achievement. Kill the Orks in the room at the beginning and the Shoota Boyz on the upper level and you will get swarmed by Gretchins, Orks and Squigs. Wait until there are a lot and fire away with your Bolter. The weapon you choose is rather up to you, but i found it easiest with the Bolter.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now i concentrate on the special condition kills.

Death from Above

Kill 25 enemies with Ground Pound.

Death from Above
2 guidesOnline/OfflineSingle PlayerCooperativeVersusCumulative +

This achievement is earned for simply killing enemies with your jetpack, meaning when you are midair and stomp down, the attack should kill the enemy. There are 3 sequences with jetpacks and although I got it on the first one, the best and easiest place to get it is the last chapter since the traitor guards in this level die with one attack and the daemons die with 2.

Glorious Slaughter

Kill 75 enemies using Executions.

Glorious Slaughter
2 guidesOnline/OfflineSingle PlayerCooperativeVersusCumulative +

You will eventually get this achievement through the campaign anyways. Every time a B-Button prompt appears on an enemy you can execute him. Doing it will replenish your health, BUT not your shield. Also be aware that during this you are not invincible, meaning you can get hurt and die in the process. Simply damage enemies enough to get the prompt and rinse and repeat.

Shock & Awe

Kill 150 enemies using the Charge attack.

Shock & Awe
4 guidesOnline/OfflineSingle PlayerCooperativeVersusCumulative +

For this you have to ram attack enemies AND kill them with it. This simply means that you have to sprint and use X to do a charge attack. Using it on bigger enemies is not the best idea since they take a lot of hits, but using it against Gretchins and traitor Imperials is always a one hit kill. Might take some time and I recommend either a place where a lot of Gretchins spawn or the Psykers spawn infinite guardsmen. If you, however, use it at times throughout the campaign, you might get it by the end of it.

Firepower

Kill 250 enemies using Exotic weapons.

Firepower
3 guidesOnline/OfflineSingle PlayerCooperativeVersusCumulative +

With exotic weapons they mean fixed weapons like Heavy Bolter, plasma guns and machine guns. Either use them in the socket or rip them out. Easiest done again on smaller foes since they only take one round, but it's totally up to you where to use them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I go for the enemie specific kills

Nob Down

Win 10 struggles against the Ork Nob.

Nob Down
3 guidesOnline/OfflineSingle PlayerCooperativeVersusCumulative +

This is for struggling against the big boss Orks. This basically happens when you are prompted for the execution on them. You have to button smash the B button to force your weapon into the foe (obviously it's struggling for the upper hand) and if you win you get 1 kill towards the achievement. Rinse and repeat until you get it.

The Bigger They Are...

The Bigger They Are...
1 guideOnline/OfflineSingle PlayerCooperativeVersusCumulative +

This one is actually for killing the big Orks (I'm not quite sure if the ones with the maces are the only ones that count) any way you see fit. They are tough so don't even try to melee them unless you are quite sure they are not going to take a lot more punishment.

Not So Tough

These are the Orks with the big shields. The only weapon in melee which makes an impression on those guys is the Hammer, but sadly you can only wield one handed weapons and the Bolter with that. These enemies are actually quite weak against explosives, especially against the loaded shot of the plasma weapons. Use them to stumble them and finish them off ASAP.

Die, Heretics

This is quite obvious, simply kill the needed number of Chaos Space Marines. In case you don't know, those are the guys with the same sort of armor, but they just shoot you and look a little bit more sinister.

These are only for kills and I can almost guarantee, the reason why the 40k kills achievement has such a high ratio is basically because it takes a lot of dedication and time to grind the kills out. Luckily each kill you do is counted be it in multi or single player and therefore you will have the weapon challenges way before the 40k kills. The best place for this is actually chapter 14: 2nd checkpoint. Here you encounter an infinite amount of enemies and have a machine gun at your disposal. Fire with each weapon until you have no more ammo in any, then simply reload the checkpoint. It takes around 15+ hours of grinding, of course varying if you did the multiplayer achievements before that (at that point i strongly recommend doing the MP first!).

Congrats, you succesfully beat the single player!

This is the full collectible walkthrough, which is in this game marked by hovering skulls. You can either simply pick them up by pressing B or hold the B button to listen to the audio log. Both cases count. It's also quite confusing, but the order you see them in the menus when checking on which you still need (they are listed per chapter) is NOT the order you find them in the game. That's why I have made a breakdown for each chapter, simply telling you where to find each rather then telling you the name of it (of course if the name is correct, I will write it down as well). The first is the chapter, the second the checkpoint to prevent any confusion. I also found a video for those that prefer videos over written guides.

All of the multiplayer achievements can be done in private matches with friends. Of course you can play it legit, but I can tell that you will need around 60+ hours to complete the weapon challenges and armor challenges alone, not to mention the miscellaneous achievements for it. Grab 2 friends and concentrate on the weapon challenges with them. You can do it with just 1 other person of course, but there are some challenges where you need multi kills. The best setup you can choose is "Seize Ground" with a point limit of 2500 and a time limit of 10mins (depending on how long you want to go, you can of course increase that number as well). The map you choose is not that important, but i found out that the one with the crashed Thunderhawks in the open is pretty well suited for around 95% of the challenges (should be "waste disposal"). Its not a full 100% because of the extreme range kills with the laser canon, the map is too small for those. As soon as everyone has a high enough level, the boosting works as follows:

The booster chooses whichever setup he wants and the other 2 players choose tactical with rapid deployment (unlocked on higher levels) and a second perk of choice. The booster is alone in his team, the other 2 are in the other team. Now the booster waits in front of the point closest to him, while the other 2 capture the same point. They get killed and choose the exact same point to spawn. With rapid deployment this takes only 3 seconds. So, with that said i will point out each achievement now. (you can do all of them of course with a guest/dummy account as well, but it will be way more boring that way)

Shapeshifter

Shapeshifter
2 guidesOnline Game ModeVersus

This will come basically as one of the first achievements for obvious reasons. As soon as you reach a certain level you will unlock new classes and therefore the corresponding weapons. Since you will concentrate on the weapon challenges you should do it like that: As soon as it's your turn, choose the Tactical Marine (should be your first class anyway) and work on the kill streaks with the Bolter. A kill streak is when you kill 3 enemies in a row without dying. The problem is, if you now continue the streak and rack another 3 up, it won't count as a new streak. So, after your 3rd, get killed by one of the other players, rinse and repeat until your turn is over (I will go into detail on the challenges later on). The next is the Devastator class with the Heavy Bolter. This one has kill streaks as well, so do the same as with the one above. Last pick the Assault class, rack up Bolt Pistol and/or Chain Sword kills. Those only need kills, so kill as much as you want to. Achievement unlocks after the game ends.

This one will come almost naturally and if you want to you can of course keep track and count.

Down to Earth

Kill 50 Assault Marines/Raptors in mid-air.

Down to Earth
2 guidesOnline Game ModeCooperativeVersusCumulative +

Now this one is a little tricky. You have to use the Vengeance Launcher, while the rest uses the Raptor class. Stick one of them with 2 grenades, let them jump up and detonate the grenades (LB) in midair. Rinse and repeat 50 times and the achievement is yours.

Defender

Kill 25 opponents who are capturing your Control Point in Seize Ground.

Defender
2 guidesOnline Game ModeVersusCumulative +

Capture a point and let an enemy get close to decap it (you have to stand far away for that because otherwise its contested and wont count). Kill him while he does it and dont let him cap it. Rinse and repeat 25 times and the achievement is yours.

Armored in Glory

Complete 10 armor challenges.

Armored in Glory
1 guideOnline Game ModeVersus

Armor challenges are shown on the challenges option when you press Y. Those will come naturally since you get them by killing, winning and doing other stuff as either Chaos or Space Marine (each has its own achievements of course)

Master Crafted

Fully customize a Space Marine and a Chaos Space Marine character.

Master Crafted
3 guidesOnline Game ModeVersusLevel

This one is awarded for fully customizing a Chaos and Space Marine. You have to swap each piece of armor AND change each colour on every armor part. As soon as you leave the customize screen and go back to MP, the achievement pops. This will take some time in the game since you first have to unlock one piece from each armor. If you however have the preorder bonus skins, you can get this right when you start MP.

Master of Arms

Complete 5 weapon challenges.

Keeper of the Armory

Complete all the weapon challenges.

These are the reason why the game has such a high ratio and takes that long to complete. The weapon challenges are hard and time consuming and if you want to do them legit, good luck, because kill streaks and double kills are close to impossible. I will write here a list of the weapons and what you have to do with them (not the number, but the sort of kill you need).

Bolt Pistol: Kills

Plasma Pistol: Kills

Chain Sword: Kills

Chain Axe/Energy Axe: Kills

Energy Hammer/Energy Mace: Kills

Energy Sword: Kills (not needed for the achievement, additional when you played Warhammer kill team)

Bolter: Kills, Kill streaks

Storm Bolter/Double Bolter: Kills, Kill streaks

Stalker Bolter/Demon Eye Bolter: Kills, Headshots

Laser Cannon: Kills, Extreme range Kills

Vengeance Launcer: Kills, Double Kills

Plasma Thrower: Kills, Alternative fire kills (loaded kill)

Melter: Kills, Double Kills

Heavy Bolter: Kills, Killstreaks

Plasma Cannon: Kills, Double Kills

These will come naturally while doing the weapon challenges, so don't bother about those.

That concludes the multiplayer part of the game.

This is the first DLC for this game and it strongly depends on teamwork in a wave based game where you have to fend off loyal troops in 4 different arenas. There are however a few little preparations that will be crucial for your success on that DLC which are:

  • Have a high level multiplayer character! Not really needed, but it certainly will make the game A LOT easier since you can use your custom classes from the multiplayer. Having a team where everyone is level 41 is actually the best setup you can have, but even better is a setup where all players have in addition every weapon challenge! Also keep in mind that this is a TEAMBASED game, so you share lives AND points. A good coordination between the team members is crucial for success and also having the right mixture of units is important. Having only melee based players is as bad as having only ranged types, EVEN if all 4 have the demonhammer/deathstrike combo.
  • Practice makes perfect and therefore prepare to die a lot if you don't know the arenas like the back of your hand. Also knowing when which enemies spawn is a big help in the long run.
  • The better the connectivity between the players is the better the game will run but be aware that it will lag often and a lot, resulting in quite ridiculous deaths.
  • Have at least 2 players with the demonhammer AND deadly strike perk since this will kill unarmed enemies (which is the majority) with one blow 99% of the time! Not to mention that those players will be the ones that kill/die the most, they will also be the ones which have to be everywhere at the same time. Having 4 players with the hammer is a really good setup, BUT be aware that you will lack the ranged damage which is really important on the waves 15-20 in my opinion!
  • Aim for challenges whenever you can since they will boost your points which will be needed for a certain achievement.

So, now with that said, lets begin on arena 1, wave 1. This is the easiest setup and a lot of cover gives a lot of chances to get a few achievements right here. Concentrate on mastering at least 3 challenges in these waves to earn the corresponding achievement. Also in this one, everyone should try to not die even once since this will be the easiest arena for that achievement. So after wave 5 and the 3rd completed challenge you should earn the following achievements.

Death to the False Emperor

Complete Chaos Invasion Arena 1.

Now we will emerge on the next map and the waves 5-10. Those are a little bit harder because you will face space marines and bigger orks in addition. In my opinion it's still an easy arena but this will be the place where some of you will die at least once. Don't worry, dying is part of this game. So after the last wave the teleporter opens again and upon entering you will get the next achievement.

Blood for the Blood God

Complete Chaos Invasion Arena 2.

Blood for the Blood God
1 guideOnline Game ModeCooperative

This is in my opinion the hardest arena because there is nearly no cover at all. Be prepared to die a lot and also you will face a few space marine champions that will make your life quite hard. After completing waves 10-15 another achievement unlocks and we are ready to start the last wave.

Skulls for the Skull Throne

Complete Chaos Invasion Arena 3.

If you don't have at least 200 - 215.000 points at this point, I strongly recommend to start over again since you wont reach the needed 270k points for the achievement. If you manage to get around 260k around wave 20 (before actually entering the bonus wave) you should be fine to reach the 270k, but if done correctly, you will get to it around wave 19-20 the following achievement. In my opinion one of the harder achievements.

Glory to the Dark Gods!

Achieve a team score of higher than 270,000 in the Chaos Invasion mission.

Glory to the Dark Gods!
2 guidesOnline Game ModeCooperative

Play until you beat wave 20 and you'll unlock the achievement for beating all the chaos arena missions. I know this sounds easier than it is but with patience and a strong team, this is totally doable.

Let the Galaxy Burn

Complete the Chaos Invasion mission.

Let the Galaxy Burn

We are nearly done, the only thing that's still missing is the bonus wave which consists of a lot of orks and dreadnoughts. This is by far the toughest wave and the only tip i can give is to let the dreadnoughts live while going for the normal ork units. Keeping the freadnoughts for the end is the best advice i can give because they can kill you in an instant. They are stationary so basically they wont follow you and standing behind pipes will provide enough cover to refresh you. So, after this wave you get 2 achievements if the party stayed together the whole time.
