Rock Band

Welcome to the walkthrough for Rock Band! This game, while not exceedingly difficult, will require some Expert play and a lot of time to get the full 1000G. You will also need a guitar, a drum set, a microphone and a standard Xbox 360 controller. You will also need a person to play Expert with locally. Here is a brief outline of how we will go for the 1000G.

1. Play through Solo Tour 3 times on Expert - once on guitar, once on drums and once on vocals.

2. Play through Band World Tour, completing every venue and getting over 1 million fans.

3. Play some rounds of Tug of War and Score Duel in ranked online matches over Xbox LIVE.

4. Go back and get 100% on a song on each instrument, assuming you haven't already.

This walkthrough assumes that you can play all instruments on Expert. To get the full gamerscore, you're going to have to be decent at them all on said difficulty. You don't have to be amazing and it's possible to squeak by in some cases. The setlist in this game is fairly easy compared to some other rhythm games.

There's a lot to keep in mind while playing Rock Band. First of all, as this is the first game in the series, there's a lot of things that you may be used to in the newer entries that don't exist in this installment. There's also plenty of general rhythm-game basics to follow, which you may already be familiar with if you've played any of the Guitar Hero or Rock Band games.

Also, make sure you have the latest patches for the game. This may sound like a no-brainer, but many people play offline. Having up-to-date patches will make your life a lot easier.

Instruments

First of all, if you ever hope to get all the achievements, you're going to need a guitar, a drum set, a standard controller and a microphone. Xbox 360 headsets do count as microphones, but they don't pick up pitch very well. You can use basically any USB microphone. You can also use the microphones that come with the game Lips.

Any model of Rock Band or Guitar Hero drum set will work, but you're going to want to find one in good condition. I personally use the ION Drum Rocker drum set. It is great quality and doesn't drop notes like a lot of stock kits do. However, most people don't want to spend $200+ on a drum set, so for those who want quality on the cheap, I'd recommend a RB2 or RB3 era stock kit. They don't always come in the best condition, even when brand new, so you may have to try new sets until you get a good one. You could also look up a tutorial online to modify your drums so that they're more responsive. If you own an electronic drum kit, you can plug it into a Guitar Hero drum set to use it as a drum controller.

As for your guitar, any Guitar Hero or Rock Band guitar will work, save for the RB3 pro guitar, but it should be pretty obvious why that isn't compatible.

The Engine

The timing window for guitar, bass and drums stays mostly the same throughout most games in the Rock Band series. For people familiar with the Guitar Hero series, the timing window is comparable to that of Guitar Hero 2.

The hammer-ons and pull-offs take some getting used to. They are fairly smaller than the normal notes. However, they're not nearly as small as they are in future Rock Band installments. This may take some getting used to, as the HOPO's (Hammer-On's, Pull-Off's) have a tendency to blend in with the regular notes. Also, there are no chord HOPO's or HOPO's after sustains like in future games and the HOPO placement is based off of the time signature/BPM, similar to how they're set in GH2. To most people, that doesn't mean anything. Basically, the HOPO's are set automatically and not manually like future titles. This means that the HOPO placement for post-RB2 DLC may differ between this game and others.

The vocals engine in Rock Band is - to put it delicately - terrible. The engine is MUCH tighter than it is in RB2 and beyond. Furthermore, talky sections are not always functional. If you play vocals on future installments, you'll notice that talkies are extremely sensitive. In RB1, not so much. Compare "Sabotage" between this game and RB2 and you'll see what I mean. In some songs, the talkies in this game won't work at all. The most notorious of these is the "Ow!" in "Next to You." Some talkies, however, are really easy to trigger. Most of these are in select DLC songs, however. Furthermore, pitched sections require much more precision. It's not nearly as bad as, say, Guitar Hero World Tour, but it will definitely take a lot of getting used to. Personally, I can do vocals really well on RB2 and beyond, but I can't get this engine to work for me. Having the latest patches will loosen up the vocals engine slightly, mostly with talkies, but it's still really hard to use.

The vocals engine also has two display types - scrolling and static. The default is scrolling, which is just what it sounds like. The pitch bars scroll past like any other instrument's display. In static, each phrase appears separately and the arrow moves across the pitch bars for each phrase. I personally much prefer scrolling. Static is difficult to read, especially on really fast songs.

Also, certain engine modifiers that appear in later games do not appear here. Namely, Breakneck Speed. There's only one speed for the fretboard, and that's the default speed. The default speed differs from difficulty to difficulty, though, and on vocals, the scrolling speed is based upon how fast the lyrics are.

Also, when it comes to star cutoffs, the gold star cutoffs are lower with the most recent patch. This is in response to some of the cutoffs that were originally so high that they were literally impossible to reach.

Overdrive

Overdrive in this game functions just like Star Power does in Guitar Hero. However, unlike the early Guitar Hero entries, Overdrive phrases will continue to appear on the fretboard while you have your OD running. Therefore, you won't overwrite the OD phrases you come across while using OD. You'll be able to pick them up and extend your OD usage.

Activating OD on guitar/bass works just the same as in GH. Just tilt your guitar up or hit the Back button. Try to learn to use the Back button to activate, as it gives you much more precise control over where to use it.

For drums, you can only activate OD at the end of drum fills. Whenever a drum fill section comes up, just freestyle a bit then hit the green note at the end of the fill to activate. If you know what note in the chart is covered by the green note at the end of the fill, and if you're fast enough to hit the combination immediately after activating, you can take advantage of a glitch to "squeeze" extra points out. It's completely legal to use this technique to boost your score, and by this point, it's almost necessary to get to the top of the drum leaderboards. Some songs cannot be gold starred without squeezing. However, if you're only interested in achievements and not score, you don't need to worry about this.

On vocals, you have to shout/yell/make a loud noise during the OD activation sections. These are set to appear in any space that's long enough between phrases.

"Bonus" Points

There are a couple of bonus sections throughout songs that will give you "bonus" points. Here's a quick breakdown.

Solo sections will appear in some songs on guitar. They are noted by a blue background on the fretboard and a percentage box above the fretboard. As you hit more notes, the percentage will go up. You get a solo bonus based on a combination of the number of notes you hit and the percentage of the solo you hit. These bonuses are not factored into the star cutoffs.

Tap sections will appear in some vocals songs during breaks where there are handclaps/cowbell/tambourine/etc in the song. Either make a noise in the mic or hit the A button whenever the taps reach the center of the circle where your arrow used to be. You get points for each tap, plus a bonus based on a combination of the number of taps you hit and the percentage of the taps you hit. These bonuses are not factored into the star cutoffs.

Some songs have a Big Rock Ending at the end. This is denoted by colorful lanes filling every player's fretboard, a OD activation window on vocals and a counter marked "Ending Bonus" that shows how many points you have built up. Every player has to hit the notes at the end of the BRE to get them added to the score. For vocals, you can't build up points, but you do have to activate the window that appears in order to get the BRE. Also, when playing solo, the BRE still appears for every instrument except vocals. Pre-patch, the BRE is factored into the star cutoffs, but the latest patch adjusts the cutoffs so that songs with BREs no longer have them factored into the cutoff, which drastically lowers the 5-star and gold star cutoffs.

DLC

As you may know, Rock Band has an extensive DLC library. There are well over 1,000 songs available to download. While no DLC songs are required to get the full 1000G, I highly recommend buying as much as you can. The reason for this it two-fold. First, it makes the later achievements for getting 100% on songs on Expert much easier. Second, you have to play an intense number of songs in Band World Tour, including several custom and random setlists. If you're stuck with the same 58 songs that are on the disc, you are going to get real tired of playing the same songs, real fast. Having a large DLC selection make things much more bearable.

If you own the EU version of Rock Band, you already have 9 DLC songs on the disc. These songs aren't in the EU marketplace, but they are in the US marketplace.

Here is a breakdown of what songs are compatible with Rock Band and which ones aren't.

DLC released during RB1 era - YES
DLC released during RB2 era - YES
DLC released during RB3 era - NO
Rock Band Network DLC - NO
The Beatles: Rock Band DLC - NO
AC/DC Track Pack exports - YES
LEGO Rock Band exports - YES
Green Day: Rock Band exports - YES
Rock Band 2 exports - NO

It should also be noted that if you have a large number of DLC songs (well over 100 or 200) the song select screen starts to slow down. There's not a whole lot you can do about that. You'll just have to learn to live with it.

For the first part of the game we'll be starting with the Solo Tour. Thankfully, the difficulty achievements are stacked, so playing through on Expert will get you the achievements for all difficulties. There are 45 songs in Solo Tour, divided into 9 tiers. You're going to have to play through the tour 3 times - once on guitar, once on drums and once on vocals. There is no tour for bass.

Guitar

Let's start with guitar. Create a new character and start your guitar Solo Tour on Expert. The guitar tour isn't particularly difficult. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's the easiest tour setlist in any Guitar Hero or Rock Band game, save for The Beatles or Green Day.

Chances are, you'll probably get 5 stars on the first song, "Should I Stay or Should I Go." When you do, you get an achievement for getting 5 stars on a song. It's hardly worth mentioning, but there you go.

If you're an adept Expert player, the tour shouldn't pose much of a problem on guitar. "Run to the Hills" could give you some issues, but it's not so bad. The only real song to be worried about is "Green Grass and High Tides." It's a 9-minute-long song with two very long solos, the second of which is fairly Free Bird-esque, with lots of descending triplets and quads. It may require a few tries, but if you've beaten GH2 or GH3 on expert, you should get it pretty quick. Save your OD for harder sections to prevent yourself from failing out.

After finishing the tour, you'll get all 4 achievements for finishing the Solo Tour on guitar, one for each difficulty.

You may also want to play through the bonus songs setlist. You don't get any achievements for it, but it'll unlock them all. You can also unlock them in Band World Tour, but if you play them solo, you can have them unlocked for random and custom setlists from the beginning.

Drums

Next up, we'll move on to drums Solo Tour. This will be a bit more difficult than guitar, especially if you're not used to drums.

The first troublesome song you'll probably come across is "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." About halfway through the song is a snare roll that gets really fast and adds in a bunch of fast bass pedal that can be easily failed on. The rest of the song is fairly difficult as well, but with some practice, you can make it.

"Run to the Hills" is one of the songs that trips most people up. It's basically a really fast disco beat throughout most of the song with a varying tempo. It's going to require a lot of practice and a lot of stamina. If you're really having trouble, get a friend to do the bass pedal for you. You can also hoard OD and not activate on the fills so that you cover up a lot of the song with fills.

When you get to "Won't Get Fooled Again" at the end, you may have some trouble with that too. It's not quite as bad as "Run to the Hills," but it can still trip you up.

Once you make it through drums Solo Tour on Expert, you'll get 4 more achievements.

Vocals

Finally, the only Solo Tour left is for vocals. As I've stated on the previous page, this game's engine kind of sucks. My best advice is to listen to the songs until you're familiar enough with the lyrics and the pitches to fake your way through the songs. It's not too hard to pass most songs, though your scores may not exactly be stellar. I don't have a lot of advice to give you, since I just had to fake my way through it myself.

Once you make your way through, you'll get the last 4 Solo Tour achievements.

Hooray! Solo Tour is over! Now let's move on to Band World Tour.

Band World Tour is essentially the multiplayer career mode of Rock Band. There are quite a few achievements attached to it.

Ok, so I've got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that you're required to have at least two players in BWT at all times. The good news is that BWT only supports local multiplayer. Oh, wait. I guess that's also bad news. Anyway, there are more restrictions to add on. Whatever character you use to start your band in BWT must be present at all times. That means, if you start with a drummer as your band leader, that drummer has to be present whenever you play as that band. And your progress toward BWT doesn't carry over between bands. Yeah. It sucks. Furthermore, there are a few difficulty-related achievements, and in later venues, the lower difficulties are blocked out, so not only do you have to play locally with a friend, they have to be able to play Expert.

Anyway, BWT is made up of 17 cities. Most of these cities have 3 venues, though a few only have one. Each of these venues contains anywhere from 3 to 5 setlists. Many sets are just one song. Other setlists are made up of preset song lists. Some are made up of a set number of randomly selected songs, whilst others allow you to choose which songs you can play. Needless to say, it's going to take a lot of grinding. Also, you're going to be playing the 58 on-disc songs a lot in just the preset setlists alone. Because of this, I highly recommend you purchase as much DLC as you can. You're going to get incredibly tired of the on-disc songs as it is, so you will want plenty of new songs to play in the custom and randomized setlists. There's nothing requiring you to buy DLC, but again, it's just a suggestion to keep you and your friend from trying to strangle each other with the microphone cord after playing "Run to the Hills" for the 57th time.

To progress in BWT, you have to collect stars and fans. Stars are the same as they are in any other mode, with each song having up to 5 stars. (Gold stars still only count as 5 stars toward your total.) Fans are given out at the end of each setlist, based on the number of stars you got and the difficulty you played on. Be careful, though, because you will lose fans whenever your band fails a song. Building up your star and fan counts will unlock more setlists. At certain points, you will have to beat special setlists to unlock new vehicles that will allow you to progress to new cities.

As for the achievements, here's a breakdown of what's tied to what in BWT. First off, like in Solo Tour, there are achievements related to progressing in the career. You will get 3 achievements for unlocking the 3 different vehicles that you win by completing special setlists. Another achievement is tied to the Hall of Fame induction, which comes with completing the Hall of Fame Induction setlist. And then there's the achievements for the notorious Endless Setlist, a setlist of all 58 on-disc songs back-to-back. These achievements are related to the difficulty you complete it on. And the achievement you get is based on the lowest difficulty selected among your band. Meaning, if you play on Expert but your partner plays on Medium, you'll only get the achievement for Medium. Additionally, the difficulty achievements stack, so if you complete the ESL on Expert, you get all 3. 17 achievements are tied to finishing every setlist in a city. So, for example, when you complete every setlist in Boston, you get the Boston-related achievement. Finally, there is an achievement for amassing 1,000,000 fans. If you're playing offline, make sure you sign into XBL first to download the latest patch. Why? Because fans are easier to get post-patch. Furthermore, there are caps on the amount of fans you can earn on specific difficulties. Without patches, the Hard cutoff is below one million. The patch allows you to pass the million mark on Hard. Once you pass that mark, you get an achievement.

So, that's pretty much how BWT works. Below is a list of all cities and venues and all the setlists contained within. All the achievements are listed with the city they're unlocked in. Take a look and you'll see just how many times you'll be playing the on-disc songs. It's not too late to buy more DLC to spice up the custom and mystery setlists!

There are only a handful of achievements that require you to go on Xbox LIVE, so this will be a relatively brief section. I haven't checked the online community lately (as of January 2012), but I can only assume it's pretty dead, seeing as RB3 has been out for over a year at this point. So, you may need a boosting partner for these if you can't find any randoms.

The first achievement we're going to look at is a "viral" achievement. It's not like most viral achievements where you have to play with someone who has the achievement. Instead you have to play with someone that has a different achievement. That achievement is Platinum Artist, to be specific. It's the achievement you get for completing the Endless Setlist in Band World Tour on Expert. It doesn't matter what character they use or if the character has the platinum icon or even if they still have the save file they completed the ESL on, just so long as they have the achievement. Play any mode, either co-op or versus, and you'll pop the achievement at the end of the song.

The rest of the XBL achievements are for ranked competitive multiplayer. There are two for Tug of War and two for Score Duel. One requires you to win 5 consecutive matches, the other requires a total of 20 ranked wins. There's not much to say about this. It can be done on any difficulty. Tug of War has each player only playing specific sections of a song and Score Duel has both players play the entire song. In both cases, the higher score wins. In ranked matches, the song you play is picked at random, and it can include DLC, provided both of you have the same song. If you happen to find random players, just hope you're better than them. If you're boosting, just have your opponent let you win, then switch off if they want to boost for themselves too. Just make sure you each get a win streak of 5 in each match. Also, it should be noted that ties and disconnects do not count as wins.

And that's it for Xbox LIVE. We're almost at 1000G! Just 4 achievements left...

This is the home stretch, people! Just 40G left to go! All that remains are the 4 achievements for getting 100% on an Expert song for each instrument.

First of all, these can be done in any mode. Solo, band play, Tug of War, Score Duel...anything. And you can get overstrums/overhits too. As long as the stats screen at the end of the song reads 100% on your end and you were on Expert, you'll get the achievement for that instrument. Well, there's an exception on bass, but we'll get to that in a moment.

If you've been having no trouble with all the other achievements in this game, these should probably come naturally to you. However, for those of you who have been struggling, here are some suggestions of what songs to play.

Guitar

If you're looking to do this with on-disc songs only, there are a few particularly easy songs you'll want to try. "I Think I'm Paranoid" is the most commonly FCed on-disc song, according to Score Hero, so try that one out. "Maps" and "Here It Goes Again" are also pretty easy.

If you want to go with DLC, there are tons of options. Plenty of tier 1 songs exist on the marketplace that take little effort to FC. One such song I'd suggest is "Charlene (I'm Right Behind You)" by Stephen and the Colberts. It's around a minute long, is fairly easy, and best of all, it's completely free!

Bass

Ok, bass has a bit of a caveat to it. In order to get the 100% achievement, you have to use nothing but upstrums. Any downstrums will void the achievement, including those in the Big Rock Ending. Using the solo buttons will also negate the achievement for some reason.

Using on-disc songs, "Maps" is a pretty viable candidate. Most of the first few tiers are pretty easy in general.

DLC-wise, again, you could use "Charlene (I'm Right Behind You)." If you want to get really cheap, drop 160 MSP on the song "Silver" by the Pixies. It has a total of 71 notes on bass, and they're all long sustains, so it's probably the easiest song out there.

Drums

This is where things can be a bit harder. For on-disc songs, "I Think I'm Paranoid" is again one of the most commonly FCed songs there is.

Resorting to DLC, if you bought "Silver" for bass, you can use it again for drums. It's just a YGO (yellow, green, orange) combo over and over at a very slow pace. If you don't mind dropping another 160 MSP, you can get it with essentially no effort on "Polly" by Nirvana. There are 4 YG combinations throughout the song for a total of 8 notes. It doesn't get easier than that.

Vocals

Finally, we have the most difficult one of all. Well, the most difficult if you're sticking to on-disc songs anyway. Personally, I can't get 100% on any songs on-disc on Expert vocals because of just how unnecessarily picky the engine is. If you're used to knocking down FCs in RB2 and beyond, prepare for a system shock. Your best bet here is "Blitzkrieg Bop" or "Paranoid." Both are fairly simple songs.

Here is where DLC really excels. Pick up "Debaser" by the Pixies for 160 MSP, continually make noise, and you're basically guaranteed the achievement. That's right. While talkies are generally brutal in RB1, the settings for "Debaser" are like RB2 talkies in that basically any noise will set them off.

And there you go! 1000G in Rock Band! It's quite a grind, but if you can find the time and a local multiplayer partner, it's a very satisfying completion.
