Forza Horizon

Introduction

Howdy, and welcome to the Forza Horizon Walkthrough.

If you are a fan of the Forza Motorsport series, and have purchased this purely based on your previous experiences, you should be aware that there are huge differences. There is an actual story in this game, and it has a more sandbox feel to it. The game surrounds the events of the Horizon Festival, a racing festival in Colorado.

Important Note

NOTE: To complete this game, you will be required to have a Forza Motorsport 3 OR Forza Motorsport 4 save, as there is an achievement for receiving loyalty cars, which are only given if you have an aforementioned save. If you plan on completing this game, ensure you have the save before starting, as these loyalty cars may be useful later on.

Single Player

There are several areas you can work on in the game. I recommend that you go through the main story first by racing and winning each of the Festival Races. As you win races, you will qualify for new wristbands, which in turn, opens up new races. Each time you qualify for a new wristband, you will be able to have a one-on-one race against a Star. There is an achievement for beating every star in the game in Star Showdowns. By doing so, you will also win their cars.

You should now win all 30 Street Races. There are 10 at each of 3 locations. After you have done that, you should hopefully be the most popular racer in the festival. As such, you should now race and win each of the Showcase Events. Winning all of the aforementioned races will unlock the "All Your Race Are Belong To Us" achievement.

To finish off with the Single Player, you should complete all Horizon Outpost PR Stunts, find and smash all Discount Signs, drive along all Roads in the game, set a speed on at least 5 Speed Traps and Speed Zones, and discover one Barn Find. There are several other miscellaneous achievements, all of which are described in the walkthrough.

Multiplayer

The Multiplayer in this game is relatively easy. 9 of the achievements do not require you to even win races. You should complete of each Playground Game, complete 25 Races, and rank up to Level 25. By doing so, you should have also won at least 5 cars, unlocking all but one Multiplayer achievement.

The final Multiplayer achievement is to complete at least 10 Free Roam Challenges. It is recommended that you find a co-op partner for this. Complete 8 of the 11 route challenges, and the skill challenges for drafting and trading paint.

Rally Expansion DLC

There is no Free Roam to the Rally Expansion. This is a new Championship based around rally driving. The tracks will be re-used tracks from the main game, but most of the tracks will be covered with dirt. They are also a lot more ... bumpy. Instead of racing alongside other drivers, you are racing to record a good time. There are several races; each of which have four stages. To win the race, you do not have to win all stages (though that makes it a formality), but instead record the best time overall.

Achievement-wise, you should aim to win all Horizon Rally races, buy all Rally Expansion cars, and win 5 Rivals Events. There are also achievements for winning a stage without using crash or rewind, winning a stage on hard with manual shift and no driving line, and accumulating 1609 metres of air. For the Multiplayer, you must win 10 races.

If you follow the walkthrough without reading this page, you will have an easy time unlocking all of the achievements. With that said, there are a few hints and tips that may help you even further.

Difficulty

For starters, there is just one achievement in the main game that requires any specific difficulty. There is an additional achievement in the Horizon Rally Expansion DLC too. Apart from these, you can play on whatever difficulty you wish. Having a hard time? Turn the difficulty down! Finding it too easy, and want more money? Turn the difficulty up!

Difficulty can be changed either before a race, or whilst in Free Roam by pressing Start and selecting, My Profile, Options, Difficulty. Here you can also find a description of each settings. Here is a list of the settings and the race bonus associated with each.

Braking. Assisted (0%), ABS On (+10%), ABS Off (+20%).
Steering. Assisted (0%), Normal (+10%), Simulation (+20%).
Traction Control. On (0%), Off (+15%).
Shifting. Automatic (0%), Manual (+15%), Manual w/ Clutch (+20%).
Driving Line. Full (0%), Braking Only (+10%), Off (+20%).
Cosmetic Damage. Off (0%), On (0%).
Rewind. On (0%), Off (20%).
Opponent Difficulty. Easy (0%), Medium (+5%), Hard (+15%), Insane (+25%).

You may notice that Cosmetic Damage does not nothing for your bonus. Forza Motorsport veterans will also notice that 'Damage, Fuel & Tyre Wear is not here. That's right, you can crash as many times as you want, and drive for as long as you want. There is no pitting, and your car's functionality will never change, no matter how badly you drive.

A particularly useful feature is the Rewind function, especially on the Rally Expansion DLC, as this enables you to re-do any bad turns/sections, simply by pressing Y. This will pretty much guarantee you victory, if used correctly, as you can use 'trial and error' to perfect your racing style.

Upgrades

Instead of buying new cars, you can just upgrade your old ones. In many cases, this can save you a lot of money! In fact, if you are wise, and search for all 100 Discount Signs early in the game, you can earn yourself FREE Upgrades for all vehicles. There's also an achievement for doing so. Whilst this is described in the walkthrough, you can also use this image to see what will be required of you.

Skill Chains

To work on your popularity, you should aim to create large skill chains in every race. Firstly, avoid crashing heavily in to walls and other cars, as that will lose all skill points that have not been awarded yet. Secondly, try to perform lots of different skills in a short space of time. You can easily extend a skill chain by drafting behind other cars, smashing in to sign posts and drifting around corners. If in a street race, or in Free Roam, you can also extend your skill chain by near misses of other non-racing cars.

Note that skill chains in Multiplayer races work in very much the same way, and can earn you a up to a 1.5x bonus to your EXP after the race.

HORIZON Festival

Okay, are you ready? Load up the game, press Start, select a hard drive, adjust brightness, yada, yada, yada. Once you are ready, select Single Player. After a cut-scene you are thrown into a vehicle (this isn't actually you), and are told to race to the HORIZON Festival. You can't change your difficulty yet, so just follow the route.

After another short cut-scene, you now gain control of your character/car, and are told that there are only 10 places available. There is a counter at the top showing the remaining places. This will decrease as you get closer to the destination. Get to the Festival fast for the HORIZON Heats. Actually, it is impossible to not qualify, as only 6 cars will beat you to the Festival. No matter how long you wait, the number will not reach 0.

Another cut-scene will introduce you to Dax, who works at the Garage in Forza Horizon. After this, you are told to go to the HORIZON Heats. Set a route to the event on your map with A. After this, you will win your first achievement, "Welcome to Horizon".

The game is now on your tag. Great! smile Now let's actually race! You are given a waypoint to the Horizon Heats, so just follow that. Once you arrive, press X to register. Finish 3rd and above to win your first wristband. If you want, before starting the race, you can change the Difficulty and turn off assists. Increasing the difficulty will increase your earnings. When you're ready, Start Race.

After the race, you are told to go to Red Rock for a Showcase Event. On your way, look out for Discount Signs, as mentioned in the Hints and Tips page. There are three on the way to the next event. These will earn you discounts for car upgrades (1% per Discount Sign), which will save you a lot of money later. You may actually want to collect all 100 now (or at least early in the game) for free upgrades and a couple of achievements. If so, skip to the bottom of the walkthrough, or simply use this image.

The Showcase Event is a point-to-point race with a difference. You are driving a Ford Mustang '70, but you are racing against a Mustang plane. Go to the event and win! It's a pretty close race, so you can't afford to make many mistakes. This is also one of the suggested races for the "Hard Driving" achievement. For this, you must win the race on Hard difficulty. Change the difficulty via the 'Difficulty' menu before starting a race. Ensure Opponent Difficulty is set to Hard. The rest of the settings can be as you wish. The more assists you have, the easier the race will be (in most cases).

Showcase Events involve popular drivers. As your popularity increases, you will be invited to more of these events. You start off 250th. You must aim to become #1! From here on out you can perform skills to increase your popularity. There are several achievements related to skills and popularity. These are listed near the bottom of this page. Check the Sponsor Challenges on the Start Menu for information on several ways to earn skill points.

After winning the race, drive to Race Central. Once there, press X to enter. After the cut-scene, you will get your yellow wristband, awarding you with the "A Wristed Development" achievement. New coloured wristbands are awarded for points, allowing you to race in more events. When you view the map soon, you will notice that different events are circled with different colours.

Popularity and Showcase Races

By this time, you should hopefully be the most popular racer in HORIZON. Popularity is based on point scoring. You will naturally earn points and popularity as you play through the game. The best way to rack up points is to create a skill chain, whereby you link multiple skills together in a short period of time. This increases a multiplier, which gives you a much larger point score, once cashed. To cash your points, you must allow a period of time to pass without earning any more points, and without crashing heavily.

The skills include drifting, racing at high speeds, drafting behind other cars, passing other cars. One of the most useful skills to use to link skill chains is the wreckage skill, which is obtained by crashing in to signposts and other smaller objects that lie to the side of the road. They don't increase your score by much, but they do help to extend the multiplier and, as mentioned above, link other skill chains.

There are various achievements for different popularities. These are 200th, 100th, 50th, 10th, and of course, 1st.

Horizon Outpost PR Stunts

As you drive around the map, you will unlock Outposts. There are 10 in total, and you must be Green Wristband or above to unlock them. You can use these to fast travel around the map. To do this, go to the map, and press X on the Outpost you would like to travel to. Each time you use this option, it costs you 10,000 Cr. Click here for the locations of all Outposts in Forza Horizon.

Each of the Outposts also has three PR Stunts. You need to complete all PR Stunts from all Outposts for the "Stuntman" achievement. Drive inside the Outposts and press X to enter them. You have a certain amount of time to complete some of the PR Stunts, and they vary from passing through speed traps at speed, completing a photo shoot at a specific location, or performing high skill combos. Completing PR Stunts will give you discounts for fast travel. One for 25% off, two for 50% off, and three for 100% off travel to that Outpost.

For the Speed Stunts, you need to race through a speed trap at a certain speed. For the best chances of success, race carefully, avoiding contact with everything and anything that will slow you down. If you can find a good route between cars and bends in the road, you will easily hit the target speed.

For the Photo Shoots you must drive to a specific destination, avoiding the wrecking of your vehicle. Once there, press Start, select Photo Mode, and take a picture of the car with something specific in the background.

The Skill Stunts are arguably the most difficult of the three PR Stunts. You should aim to create a large skill chain, so the multiplier is really high. I found it useful to take advantage of the 'Near Miss' and 'Wreckage' skills to extend the multiplier on straight roads, and then drift around corners and turns.

Miscellaneous Achievements

Great! The remaining achievements are all miscellaneous achievements that you can choose to do at any time.

Festival Racers

Hopefully you're still in the mood for racing, so let's do some more of them. As you drive around, you will see cars with names above them. These cars will also appear on the minimap as grey circles. These cars can be raced against. All you have to do is drive close behind them, and then press X to challenge them. Note that they will be marked with a difficulty. Try to be driving in one of your fastest cars to make this easier. Once challenged, you must race against them in a point to point race. Follow your minimap. You will be rewarded with a Cr bonus for each win. Win 10 of these races in total for the "Close Encounters" achievement. You can in fact race against he same drive over and over, eliminating the trouble of finding new drivers after each race.

Speed Traps and Average Speed Zones

This is another achievement you could have, and maybe even should have, unlocked by now. There are 22 Speed Traps (white on map) and 9 Speed Zones (yellow on map) dotted around Colorado. All you need to do for this achievement is set a speed in 5 of each. Here is a map showing the location of all Speed Traps and Speed Zones. Worry not, you are not required to set good times. Barn Finds

Whilst driving around, you will be alerted to Barn Finds. These Barn Finds will also be announced on the Radio. There are 9 Barn Finds in total. The following image shows where the location of each barn is, and the car you will gain from those barns. All you have to do is go to each location (once you have heard the rumour), and find the barn with an old car. Drive close to the barn and Dak will take the car in to work on. He will contact you later for collection. You only need to locate one Barn Find for the "Barn This Way" achievement.

Should you want to, you can purchase a Treasure Map, which will reveal the exact location of a Barn Find every time one becomes available. To do this, access your map, then press RB. The Treasure Map costs 5 Tokens. Tokens cost MSP. 5 Tokens (+1 Free) costs 400 MSP. The Treasure Map will also reveal the location of every Discount Sign in the game. It is recommended that you do not purchase this, for obvious reasons. The following map shows the location of each Barn Find. Click here for a larger image.

Each rank counts as a challenge, and the 20 challenges can be obtained from as many different areas as you like. The Sponsor Challenges are as follows:

Popularity Challenge - Show off your skills to become more popular!
Air Challenge - You earn the 'Air' skill when all 4 wheels are off the ground.

Discount Signs and Roads

I have coupled these two together, as it is wise to go for them at the same time. If you followed my advice from the previous page, you will have been smashing in to all Discount Signs as and when you see them. We will now try to clean up the rest of them. At the same time, we will be driving on all roads in the game. Each Discount Sign smashed will give you a 1% discount for upgrades on cars. There are 100 in total. Each are numbered, but that's not really important.

Open your map, and press LB. Filter so that only Discount Signs are shown. Each Discount sign you have located, but not smashes will now appear as a small red dot. Drive to these and smash them. You should also locate any roads that you have not driven down. These roads will appear as greyed out, rather than the white or orange/brown of other roads.

Here is an image of all 100 Discount Signs. Smash 10 for the "Bargain Shopper" achievement, and an additional 90 Discount Signs for the "Black Friday" achievement. Click here for a larger image.

Once you have driven down each and every road on the map, you will unlock the "Road Trip" achievement. There are 216 roads in total. Some smaller roads can be difficult to find, so zoom in to the map and check each complicated area carefully. This includes on/off ramps of the highway.

Congratulations! You have completed the Single Player in the Main Game. Now either get started on the Multiplayer, or the Horizon Rally DLC.

Ready for the Multiplayer? Great!

At the time of writing the game is still very populated. However, if you are from the future, or simply want to avoid the hassle of those pesky 'randoms', you can boost these achievements. As such, I recommend that you check out the Gaming Sessions Feature and contact users on the Boost List.

Regardless of how you want to go about this in terms of 'legit' or boosting, the achievements can be achieved in pretty much the same order. If you want to play against gamers online, simply choose 'Find Custom Game' and choose which Game Type you want to play. If you want to boost (or indeed dictate rules for others) select 'Create Custom Game'. From here you can select 'Setup Game' and change 'Privacy' and 'Permission', as well as many other features of the race. You will need a minimum of two players to start a race.

Surprisingly, there are no achievements for winning races. Nine achievements are for completing races, levelling up and winning cars (via levelling up). The other achievement is for completing 10 Free Roam Challenges, which is also easy.

Playground Games

Let's start by joining/creating an Infected match (see Game Type in Game Setup). Simply complete three Infected races. Now switch to King. Complete three of these races. Thirdly, switch to Cat and Mouse. Complete three of these. Now you will have the following two achievements, for completing one, and three, of each of the aforementioned game types. If you are creating these, make sure to select the lowest amount of time for each.

There is also a Playlist (under Find Game) called 'Playground', which rotates between these three modes. This is particularly useful if you having trouble finding a game for a particular mode. I personally couldn't find any Cat and Mouse games when I was searching.

Infected is essentially 'Zombies' for cars. Stay away from the Infected players to win. They do not appear on the minimap, but will appear with a green icon above their cars. When infected, crash into non-infected cars to infect them. The game ends when all players are infected.

King is the opposite of the above. One gamer has a golden gamertag. To steal it from them, you must crash into their car. The player that holds has the golden gamertag for the longest wins.

Cat and Mouse is a team game. There is one mouse on each team (lower class cars), whilst the rest of the cars are cats (higher class cars). The The mouse that finishes first wins for their team. The cats should prevent the other team's mouse from finishing, whilst also protecting their own mouse.

Note that Playground Games (the gametypes in the achievements above) will not unlock this achievement. Now complete 25 races in total for the "Still a Noob..." Levelling Up and Winning Cars

As you race, you will inevitably level up. There are two achievements for levelling up. Reach level 5 for "Ding!" and level 25 for "Just Me and the XP". Levelling up is based on gaining XP. XP is earned in three ways after a race; Position, Mileage, Players and Skill. To level up quickly, play races/events with many players, increase your Skill bonus as you would in Single Player, and win!

Online Free Roam Challenges

Before getting started on this, it is recommended that you have a sizeable collection of cars spanning Single Player, Multiplayer, and your Car Club. This is because you cannot buy cars within Free Roam, and many of the challenges require specific Makes.

Whilst the above achievements can all be completed easily by playing online without a boosting partner, it is definitely recommended that you find at least one other user for this section of Multiplayer. All of these challenges require a minimum of 2 players, but some will require 4+, whilst others require 8. The latter two require a lot of coordination, and as such are not recommended. They also happen to be much more difficult. The recommended challenges are any 8 of the Day and Night challenges, and the 2 skill-related challenges; drafting and trading paint.

First select Create Custom Game, and Setup Game. Now set Game Type to Free Roam. It is recommended that you set up each Free Roam challenge individually. For Day challenges, set Time of Day to Dawn. For Night challenges, set Time of Day to Early Evening. Everything else can stay as it is. Press A, and then go to Invite Friends. Once everyone is ready, Start Free Roam. Have everyone fast travel to the nearest PR Outpost by going to the map and pressing X. Ensure everyone is in the correct car make before setting off. Cars can be changed in each Outpost by pressing X and selecting Change Car. You can use cars from your own Garage, the Rental Garage (Multiplayer), or your Car Club Garage (if you have one). When everyone is in the correct car, go to the Start point, then drive to the Finish.

All challenges are listed below, along with tips/general information. You can press Start and select 'Co-op Challenges' to check the challenges as well as your progress. Note that you can now 'Set Group Route' via your map by using Y. Some of the below challenges have a link to a map. S=Start, and F=Finish for route start to finish challenges. All other maps have just one location marked. All non-specific challenges are cumulative, meaning they can be worked on over multiple Free Roam sessions. The 10 Free Roam challenges also can be unlocked over as many sessions and with as many different players as you want.

You should now have unlocked the original 1,000 GamerScore. Congratulations!

The Rally Expansion DLC can be purchased from here for 1600 Microsoft Points. In this DLC, there are new stages for you to race in, new cars for you to buy, and 10 new achievements worth a total of 250 GamerScore. Nine of the achievements can be unlocked in the new Single Player, whilst the final achievement is unlocked in Multiplayer. Unlike the main game, there is no Free Roam in the Horizon Rally.

Horizon Rally

Once you have downloaded the DLC, select 'Horizon Rally' from the main menu. A cut-scene will start introducing the Horizon Rally Championships. After the cut-scene, you will be forced in to a Qualifier. Don't worry though, it's just a tutorial. You will have a co-driver who will inform you of the types of turns you should take. Listen to them at all times!

Note that this DLC works in very much the same way as the main game, but the tracks are a lot more ... bumpy, as you may expect. In fact, there's an achievement for getting a total of 1609 metres of air. This is cumulative and can unlock at any time during the Horizon Rally Championship. Once the above has been completed, leave the Service Area. You are now ready to race. To reach the final, you must obtain 310 points. The first races are worth 60 points each. Each race in the Horizon Rally is separated in to four stages. The stages are not like your typical race. You are racing for time. Your time will be compared to the other races at various points within each race. Your times for all stages are added up for the final Rally Standings for any particular race.

Before starting the first stage, feel free to change the difficulty to whichever you like. There is an achievement for winning a race on Hard, but I will describe this later at an appropriate point. For starters, aim to win a race without crashing or using rewind. If you fail, restart the race.

Horizon Rally: Beaumont. 10,000 Cr. 60 points. B Class.

After winning any stage without crashing or using rewind, you will have unlocked the "Flawless Victory" achievement. All are easy with most assists on, but Stages 1 and 2 are the shortest of the four.

You will now have a new race to try. However, we will first go back and re-do the first two stages of Beaumont. The second stage is the easiest for the "Harder Driving" achievement. Select Beaumont, select the Subaru Impreza WRX STi, and before the race begins, go to Difficulty. Change the 'Opponent Difficulty' to Hard. Now make sure that Shifting is set to Manual, and Driving Line is set to Off. You may also want to ensure that Rewind is On. This is invaluable, especially if you are not the best racer in the world. Using rewind over and over on a particular corner can shave tens of milliseconds off of your time.

If you've not been driving Manual before, you will need to shift gears yourself. Under default controls, B is used to shift up a gear, and X is used to shift down a gear. Use the first stage of Beaumont to practice, but don't worry about your position. It is the second stage where you will want to aim for the achievement. This is because it is a relatively easy, short track, and the AI opponents are not overly competitive.

If you want to learn more about when to shift gear, and which gear you should use to take various corners, I recommend racing with Automatic shift and seeing what gears are used then. Alternatively, you can watch the following video by Maka91 .

When you get to your "Harder Driving" attempt, I recommend racing as fast as you can to the first checkpoint. There is only one annoying turn. Hopefully, by this point you will be in first position. If you're not, either rewind past any bad sections, or restart the race. Once you are ahead, try to perfect every corner, abusing the Rewind function. With each checkpoint, aim to extend your lead. By the final checkpoint, you will want a lead in excess of 1+ seconds, as beyond this point, there is no way of checking how you are doing against other racers without finishing the race. By this point, you may have to restart. If you have a great lead after the last checkpoint, abuse the rewind function once more for a perfect end to the race. Good luck!

Harder Driving

Win a Rally stage on Hard opponent difficulty without using automatic shifting or the Driving Line.

After winning the "Harder Driving" achievement, feel free to carry on with the Horizon Rally by racing and winning each race as they appear. As mentioned above, each has 4 stages. You should also remember to change your difficulty back to whatever you feel comfortable with.

Horizon Rally: Montano Plains. 15,000 Cr. 60 points. A Class.
Horizon Rally: North Plains. 20,000 Cr. 60 points. B Class.
Horizon Rally: The Rockies. 25,000 Cr. 60 points. A Class.
Horizon Rally: Kettle Hills. 30,000 Cr. 60 points. S Class.
Horizon Rally: Red Rock. 40,000 Cr. 60 points. R3 Class.

After winning the above races, you will qualify for the Horizon Rally Final.

Horizon Rally: Clear Springs. 50,000 Cr. S Class.

Win this race, and you become to the Horizon Rally Champion, unlocking the "Horizon Rally Champion" achievement. Congratulations!

Now that's done, let's work on Rivals mode. You must win against a rival on 5 different stages. The first two stages of each race are the shortest, but mix and match as you please. Go to the first race, and press X for Rivals. Once you are on your desired stage, you can press X again to Change Rival. You can either choose from your friends, or Change Filter with X to search the leaderboard. Once you have found a time you believe you can beat (it can be someone with a worse time than youalready), press A, then A again to start. You can see the ghost of your Rival as you are racing, so you will know if you are doing well or not.

Once you have beaten a rival on 5 different stages, you will unlock "Rally Rivals".

Multiplayer

This achievement may require a boosting partner. As such, it is recommend that you check out the Gaming Sessions Feature and contact users on the Boost List.

Once you have a session, have one person Create Custom Game, and invite the other user to your lobby. The lobby is automatically Private. Now set Game Type to 'Rally', Rally to 'The Kettle Hills Rally', and Stage to 'Kettle Hills - Stage 2'. Have Time of Day set to 'Midday' and the End of Race Timer to '0:00'. Have both players select an eligible car, and Start Game.

Both players need to win 10 Rally races. You can either alternate, or just race properly until one person has 10 wins, and then allow the other to win. Either way, after 10 wins, you will unlock "Ghostbuster".

This should hopefully be your last achievement in the entire game. Congratulations!

The 1000 Club Expansion Pack for Forza Horizon is a free DLC and can be downloaded here.

Beware, the DLC is free, but you still need to buy the cars in-game. Although some cars can be downloaded for free, they still need to be purchased with either in-game credits or real money (MS Points), but that is the case for every car.

Unicorn cars/VIP cars
I have not included the "unicorn" or "VIP" cars as free as you need to earn them and they are extremely rare, so most gamers will not have access to them.

Barn discovery cars
Barn discovery cars are available in the main game, but you have to progress through the story and multiplayer to have them appearing on your map. Then you have to find them in the barn (wrecked). You have to wait until they are fixed before you can use them. There are 9 Barn discovery cars:
